MOF-Derived NiO/NiCo2O4 and NiO/NiCo2O4-rGO as Highly Efficient and Stable Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yanying Wang,Zhaoyi Zhang,Xin Liu,Fang Ding,Ping Zou,Xianxiang Wang,Qingbiao Zhao,Hanbing Rao

We developed a hydrothermal synthesis and high temperature calcination method to synthesize the metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived NiCo2O4/NiO and NiCo2O4/NiO-rGO. These composites were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Brunner–Emmet–Teller measurements. This work combines excellent catalytic efficiency of the transition metal with large specific surface area and large number of pores of the MOF. Consequently, catalysts for oxygen evolution with high efficiency and low cost were obtained. Both materials show lower overpotential at 430 and 350 mV, respectively, under 10 mA·cm–2. The Tafel slopes are 49 and 66 mV·dec–1, respectively, with very small performance attenuation for long-term catalytic reaction. Therefore, the catalysts reported herein possess great potential for application in oxygen evolution reaction.

Hydrothermal synthesis of NiO/NiCo2O4 nanomaterials for applications in electrochemical energy storage

Jin Jie,Dai Yatang,Lu Jinghua,Dai Xiaoqiang,Tie Ning,Ma Fei,Wang Wei,Pu Linyu,Zhang Huan

It is well known that the intelligent hybridization of active materials and the controllable recombination of nanostructures can significantly improve the electrochemical performance of pseudocapacitor electrodes. In this work, a NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 needle/sphere nanostructure was synthesized on the hydrochloric acid-activated Nickel foam by a simple hydrothermal method and measured the performance of it as an electrode material for supercapacitors. Field emission scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the morphology and composition of the samples. The electrodes display a prominent specific capacitance (2447 F/g at the ampere density of 2 A/g) and remarkable cycling stability (85.2% capacity remained after 3000 cycles), owing to the unique needle/sphere composite architecture and the rational combination of active materials. The results demonstrate that the three-dimensional composite structure of NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 nanomaterials provides a large specific surface area for the electrode, which promotes the penetration of electrolyte ions and the transmission of electrons. This novel structured material will be promising in the application of supercapacitor electrode materials.

Enhanced electrocatalytic glucose oxidation assisted hydrogen production via the interfacial synergistic effect of NiO/NiCo2O4 porous nanowires

Zongxi Zhang,Jiancheng Zhao,Mei Hong,Shuai Chen,Yan Qiao

The strategies for optimizing the morphology/structure and regulating the active sites of materials are effective ways to improve their electrocatalytic performance in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and electrooxidation reaction. Herein, we demonstrate a facile strategy for constructing a NiO/NiCo2O4 porous nanowire catalyst on nickel foam (NiO/NiCo2O4/NF) as a bifunctional electrocatalyst to enhance the electrocatalytic performance for coupling the HER with the glucose oxidation reaction (GOR). Benefiting from the unique 1D porous nanowire structure and enhanced interfacial synergistic effect of the bicomponent catalyst, optimized NiO/NiCo2O4/NF-300 exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic activities for the GOR and HER with low potentials of 1.128 V and 0.212 V, respectively, at 100 mA cm−2. Moreover, the GOR exhibited a high yield of 72% for formic acid. This study provides a promising and simple strategy for the construction of 1D NiO/NiCo2O4 porous nanowire electrocatalysts with rich heterogeneous interfaces and paves a facile pathway for accelerating biomass electrochemical reaction-assisted hydrogen production.

Constructing Ni–Co PBA derived 3D/1D/2D NiO/NiCo2O4/NiMn-LDH hierarchical heterostructures for ultrahigh rate capability in hybrid supercapacitors

Dongyan Gao,Renning Liu,Dandan Han,Pengcheng Xu,Ping Wang,Yen Wei

Engineering hierarchical heterostructure materials has been recognised as a challenging but prepossessing strategy for developing hybrid supercapacitors. Thus, a Ni–Co PBA derived 3D/1D heterostructure NiO/NiCo2O4 based layered double hydroxide on carbon cloth (CC/NiO/NiCo2O4/NiMn-LDH) as a battery-type electrode was successfully designed via a controllable hydrothermal method. The 3D Ni–Co PBA nanocubes served as scaffolds, providing more space for the nickel-cobalt precursors to grow and then calcine to form a continuous conductive layer of 3D/1D CC/NiO/NiCo2O4. Subsequently, 2D ultrathin NiMn-LDH nanosheets were uniformly anchored on 3D/1D NiO/NiCo2O4, resulting in a unique hierarchical structure that effectively addressed the restacking issue and dead volume of NiMn-LDH, contributing to increased charge and electron transport rates, which promoted the reaction kinetics. Benefiting from abundant interfaces with the open channels of the nanoarchitecture, the CC/NiO/NiCo2O4/NiMn-LDH electrode showed an exceptional specific capacity of 1593.0 C g−1 at 1 A g−1 and a desirable rate performance of 92.9% at a current density of 8 A g−1. Surprisingly, HSC devices can achieve an ideal specific energy of 44.28 W h kg−1 at a specific power of 108.22 W kg−1 with 97.59% cycling durability after 10 000 consecutive charge/discharge cycles. These remarkable properties indicate that the designed novel hierarchical heterostructure electrode has great potential for broad applications in electrochemical energy storage systems.

Electrochemical Performance of NiCo-MOF-Derived NiO@NiCo2O4 Nanocomposite Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors

Yi Chen,Cong Liu,Ruixue Sun,Guojie Yin,MR. Manikandan,Yifan Lv,Jingyu Shi,Yu Hao,Rui Liu,Yanchun Hu,Shaoqian Yin,Xianwei Wang

In this study, we investigate the effect of varying tannic acid (TA) concentrations on the electrochemicalperformance of NiCo-MOF-derived nanocomposite electrode materials. The TA@NiO@NiCo 2 O 4 nanocomposites were synthesized using a straightforward metal–organic framework (MOF) templating strategy, which involved a simple hydrothermal method followed by a two-step annealing process. Electrochemical characterization reveals that the resulting nanocomposites exhibit excellent cycling stability. Among them, the sample treated with 0.02 mol L −1 TA achieves the highest specific capacitance, reaching 773 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 . Furthermore, the nanocomposites display reduced electrical impedance, with the 0.02 mol L −1 TA sample recording a series resistance (Rs) as low as 0.60 Ω. After 5000 galvanostatic charge–discharge cycles, the capacity retention of samples treated with TA concentrations of 0, 0.01, and 0.02 mol L −1 all exceed 100%, indicating remarkable electrochemical durability.

Facilitating interface charge transfer via constructing NiO/NiCo2O4 heterostructure for oxygen evolution reaction under alkaline conditions

Guoqiang Liu,Yuwen Cheng,Maoqin Qiu,Chengcheng Li,Anyang Bao,Zhongti Sun,Cuizhen Yang,Dongming Liu

Designing high-activity electrocatalysts to enhance the slow multielectron-transfer process of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great importance for hydrogen generation. Here, we employ hydrothermal and subsequent heat-treatment strategies to acquire nanoarrays-structured NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 heterojunction anchored Ni foam (NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF) as efficient materials for catalyzing the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) results demonstrate that NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF exhibits a smaller overpotential than those of single NiO/NF and NiCo 2 O 4 /NF owing to interface-triggered numerous interface charge transfer. Moreover, the superior metallic characteristics of NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF further enhance its electrochemical activity toward OER. Specifically, NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF delivered a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at an overpotential of 336 mV with a Tafel slope of 93.2 mV dec −1 for the OER, which are comparable with those of commercial RuO 2 (310 mV and 68.8 mV dec −1 ). Further, an overall water splitting system is preliminarily constructed via using a Pt net as cathode and NiO/NiCo 2 O 4 /NF as anode. The water electrolysis cell performs an operating voltage of 1.670 V at 20 mA cm −2 , which outperform the Pt net||IrO 2 couple assembled two-electrode electrolyzer (1.725 V at 20 mA cm −2 ). This study proposes an efficient route to acquire multicomponent catalysts with rich interfaces for water electrolysis.
