Boosted photoreduction of diluted CO2 through oxygen vacancy engineering in NiO nanoplatelets

Chen Weiyi,Liu Xueming,Han Bin,Liang Shujie,Deng Hong,Lin Zhang

Converting carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) to diverse value-added products through photocatalysis can validly alleviate the critical issues of greenhouse effect and energy shortages simultaneously. In particular, based on practical considerations, exploring novel catalysts to achieve efficient photoreduction of diluted CO 2 is necessary and urgent. However, this process is extremely challenging owing to the disturbance of competitive adsorption at low CO 2 concentration. Herein, we delicately synthesize oxygen vacancy-laden NiO nanoplatelets (r-NiO) via calcination under Ar protection to reduce diluted CO 2 through visible light irradiation (> 400 nm) assisted by a Ru-based photosensitizer. Benefitting from the strongly CO 2 adsorption energy of oxygen vacancies, which was confirmed by density functional calculations, the r-NiO catalysts exhibit higher activity and selectivity (6.28 × 10 3 µmol·h − 1·g −1 ; 82.11%) for diluted CO 2 -to-CO conversion than that of the normal NiO (3.94 × 10 3 µmol·h −1 ·g −1 ; 65.26%). Besides, the presence of oxygen vacancies can also promote the separation of electron-hole pairs. Our research demonstrates that oxygen vacancies could act as promising candidates for photocatalytic CO 2 reduction, offering fundamental guidance for the actual photoreduction of diluted CO 2 in the future.

Biomass carbon derived from pine nut shells decorated with NiO nanoflakes for enhanced microwave absorption properties

Huiya Wang,Yanlin Zhang,Qiuyue Wang,Chaowei Jia,Pan Cai,Gang Chen,Chengjun Dong,Hongtao Guan

Electromagnetic absorption materials have gained increasing attention. In this study, we report NiO decorated biomass porous carbon derived from pine nut shells as a promising microwave absorbing material by a facile strategy. The NiO/biomass porous carbon (BPC) is thermally converted from Ni(OH)2/BPC with BPC as the base for precipitation. All products were characterized by XRD, Raman, and SEM techniques, which reveals that the NiO nanoflakes were uniformly self-assembled on the surface of the activated carbon. Compared with counterparts of pure Ni(OH)2 and Ni(OH)2/BPC, a large reflection loss peak of −33.8 dB at 16.4 GHz is achieved for the NiO/BPC composites, and the absorption bandwidth less than −10 dB can reach up to about 6.7 GHz (from 11.3 to 18.0 GHz) with a thickness of 8 mm. The enhanced microwave absorption properties originate from the electric/dielectric polarization and the unique NiO decorated BPC structures. The expanded interfaces, such as NiO–NiO, Ni–BPC and NiO–paraffin interfaces in the complicated porous composites, could boost the interfacial polarization as well as related relaxation which results in enhanced dielectric loss and electromagnetic absorbing properties. In addition, NiO/BPC nanocomposites exhibit comparatively better matching of permittivity and permeability. It is expected that our present investigation could provide a new possibility for biomass based fabrication of potential microwave absorbing materials.

Optimizing the Oxygen Vacancies Concentration of Thin NiO Nanosheets for Efficient Selective CO2 Photoreduction

Junxiang Xiang,Tingshi Zhang,Ruodan Cao,Mingxiong Lin,Bixia Yang,Yonglin Wen,Zanyong Zhuang,Yan Yu

In designing highly efficient CO 2 reduction reaction (CRR) photocatalysts with excellent selectivity and efficiency, a key limitation is the poor understanding on the mechanism response of the active sites of catalysts to CRR selectivity and activity. Herein, it is revealed how the concentration of point defect affects the CRR selectivity and activity of catalysts. Quasi-2D NiO nanosheets (NSs) that are composed of NiO nanoparticles (NPs), and finely tuned the oxygen vacancies (OVs) concentration of the NSs by regulating the grain size (≈5–25 nm) of NPs are created. The NiO with moderate OVs concentration has the highest photocatalytic CRR efficiency and selectivity ( V CO = 17.2 μmol h −1 , 98.3%), outperforming other prepared NiO catalysts and reported Ni-based photocatalysts. Density functional theory calculation associated with the CO 2 temperature-programmed desorption confirms that the moderate OVs concentration enables strong CO 2 binding to promote CO 2 adsorption and activation and allows efficient charge transfer. In contrast, excessive OVs reduce the CO 2 binding affinity and restrain charge mobility, both detrimental to the CRR performance.

Yolk–shell magnetic mesoporous TiO2 microspheres with flowerlike NiO nanosheets for highly selective enrichment of phosphopeptides

Yayun Hong,Chenlu Pu,Hongli Zhao,Qianying Sheng,Qiliang Zhan,Minbo Lan

In this work, we fabricated a yolk–shell magnetic composite that contains mesoporous TiO2 as the inner shell and flowerlike NiO as the outer shell (denoted as Fe3O4@H-TiO2@f-NiO) to reduce the limitations of single-component metal oxides in phosphopeptide enrichment. The NiO nanosheets play a synergistic role in phosphopeptide enrichment. And the unique flowerlike structure of NiO with sufficient space can facilitate the reversible insertion/extraction of peptides, which will have less impact on the enrichment process of the inner TiO2 shell. The yolk–shell structure and two types of porous nanostructures endowed this composite with a high surface area (156.58 m2 g−1) and a large pore volume (0.37 cm3 g−1). Owing to the high surface area and combined properties of TiO2 and NiO, the Fe3O4@H-TiO2@f-NiO microspheres showed a better performance for phosphopeptide enrichment than the same material without NiO nanosheets (Fe3O4@H-TiO2). According to the LC-MS/MS results, 972 unique phosphopeptides were identified from HeLa cell extracts with a high selectivity (91.9%) by Fe3O4@H-TiO2@f-NiO relative to 837 phosphopeptides (selectivity: 60.2%) by Fe3O4@H-TiO2. The results demonstrated that, compared with single-component metal oxides, composite metal oxides could enhance the selectivity and sensitivity for phosphopeptide enrichment.

3D NiO nanoflakes/carbon fiber meshwork: Facile preparation and utilization as general platform for photocathodic bioanalysis

Fen-Ying Kong,Hui-Yu Zou,Meng Xiong,Jia-Dong Zhang,Wei Wang,Wei-Wei Zhao

Herein, we describe a customized approach for facile preparation of three-dimensional (3D) NiO nanoflakes (NFs)/carbon fiber meshwork (CFM) and its validation as a common photocathode matrix for photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis , which to our knowledge has not been reported. Specifically, 3D NiO NFs/CFM was fabricated by a sequential liquid phase deposition and annealing process, which was then characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X–ray photoelectron spectrum, UV–vis absorption spectra and N 2 adsorption-desorption measurement. Sensitized by BiOI and incorporated with an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)/tyrosinase (TYR) bi-enzyme cascade system, a sensitive split-type cathodic PEC bioanalysis for the determination of ALP was achieved. This method can detect ALP concentrations down to 3 × 10 −5 U L −1 with a linear response range of 0.001–10 U L −1 . Moreover, this proposed system exhibited good selectivity , stability and excellent performance for real sample analysis. This research features the facile preparation of 3D NiO NFs/CFM that could acts as a universal matrix for photocathodic analysis, and is envisioned to stimulate more effort for advanced 3D photocathode for PEC bioanalysis and beyond.

Non-enzymatic glucose sensor based on facial hydrothermal synthesized NiO nanosheets loaded on glassy carbon electrode

Shutao Wang,Cong Wang,Guijuan Wei,Huaqing Xiao,Ning An,Yan Zhou,Changhua An,Jun Zhang

In this work, NiO nanosheets have been successfully synthesized via a facial hydrothermal route and it was found to be an excellent catalyst for non-enzymatic glucose sensory application. The NiO nanosheets in fcc structure were examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and selected area electron diffraction (SEAD). The thickness of NiO nanosheets were found to be 40–50   nm. This catalyst was then dropcasted on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for glucose sensory purposes. The electrochemical measurements were undertaken using both voltammetric method and amperometric method. The former offer a wide concentration range for glucose (up to 2.2   mM) but with relatively low sensitivity, whereas the latter showed excellent sensitivity with 400.29   μA   mM −1   cm −2 and 1   μM detection limit. Thus the as-synthesized NiO nanosheets demonstrated potential application in non-enzymatic sensory of glucose.

A unique hierarchical structure: NiCo2O4 nanowire decorated NiO nanosheets as a carbon-free cathode for Li–O2 battery

Hongjiao Wang,Bo Fan,Zhongkuan Luo,Qixing Wu,Xuelong Zhou,Fang Wang

The development of high-performance cathodes is critical to promoting the development of Li–O2 batteries. In this work, three-dimensional NiCo2O4 nanowire-decorated NiO nanosheets (NiO@NiCo2O4) on a Ni foam were fabricated by a two-step solvothermal process. The product exhibited efficient catalytic performance for Li–O2 batteries. This three-dimensional NiO@NiCo2O4 hierarchical structures grown on Ni foam forms a porous catalytic surface for the uniform growth of discharge products. First, NiCo2O4 is a promising catalyst for improving the oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction (ORR/OER) processes for the Li–O2 batteries. Second, NiO can provide a porous scaffold for the further deposition of NiCo2O4 nanowires to avoid their aggregation. Furthermore, NiO can promote the decomposition of by-products containing carbonate/carboxylate species. As a result, the Li–O2 system with NiO@NiCo2O4 as a carbon-free cathode showed a maximum in-depth-specific discharge capacity of 9361.4 mA h g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 and 176 cycles of stability under a limited capacity of 500 mA h g−1 at a current density of 200 mA g−1. The reported strategy regarding a multicomponent hierarchical structure may provide a new approach for effective electrocatalyst design for Li–O2 batteries.

NiO nanosheets on pine pollen-derived porous carbon: construction of interface to enhance microwave absorption

Wang Huiya,Wu Xiaofen,Wang Qiuyue,Chen Siyi,Chen Gang,Dong Chengjun,Guan Hongtao

Efficient microwave absorbing materials have been drawn extensive attention. Herein, biomass porous carbon (BPC) from pine pollen has been obtained through KOH carbonization. In order to tune the microwave absorption, NiO has been composited with the as-prepared BPC with different contents. Despite the high specific surface area for the BPC activated at 600 °C, it exhibits poor microwave absorption properties as pure NiO. In contrast, the BPC/NiO composite with proper nickel precursor (0.1:1.0) has the maximum reflection loss ( RL ) of − 52.6 dB at 10.0 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth ( RL  < − 10 dB) reaches up to 4.9 GHz (from 7.8 to 12.7 GHz) when the absorber thickness is 3 mm. Three-dimensional porous architecture, interfacial polarization and their related relaxation from defects and interfaces cooperatively favor the impedance matching and strong EM wave attenuation capacities, which brings about multiple absorption mechanisms of the microwave. The present study not only provides a facile route to prepare porous carbon, but also sheds light on a new strategy in constructing BPC/NiO composites for excellent microwave absorption.

Preparation and electrochemical characteristics of porous hollow spheres of NiO nanosheets as electrodes of supercapacitors

Wei Yu,Xinbing Jiang,Shujiang Ding,Ben Q. Li

Porous hollow nanospheres (or spherical shells) made of NiO nanosheets are synthesized and tested for the electrochemical performance of the electrodes made of these materials for supercapacitors. Preparation of the NiO sheet hollow spheres starts with synthesis of polystyrene nanospheres with carboxyl groups (CPS), followed by a two-step activation procedure and the subsequent nucleation and growth by electroless deposition of Ni on the CPS core to obtain CPS@Ni core–shell nanoparticles. The CPS core is eliminated and metallic Ni nanoshell is converted into NiO by calcinations at high temperatures. The material properties of as-prepared hollow NiO nanospheres are characterized by TEM, XRD and N 2 -absorption measurements. The electrochemical characteristics of the electrodes made of these nanostructured NiO materials are determined by the CV and galvanostatic measurements. These electrochemical tests indicate that electrodes made of the NiO nanosheet hollow spheres exhibit an improved reversible capacitance of 600 F g −1 after 1000 cycles at a high current density of 10 A g −1 . It is believed that the good electrochemical performance of these electrodes is attributed to the improved OH − transport in the porous network structures associated with the hollow spheres of randomly oriented NiO nanosheets.

Synthesis and capacitance properties of N-doped porous carbon/NiO nanosheet composites using coal-based polyaniline as carbon and nitrogen source

Xiaoqin Wang,Qiaoqin Li,Yong Zhang,Yufei Yang,Zhi Cao,Shanxin Xiong

A novel synthesis approach of N-doped porous carbon (NPC)/NiO composites possessing some honeycomb-shaped nanoporous carbon and plentiful NiO nanosheets is exploited. First NPC/Ni composites are achieved with NPC yield of 52.9% through a catalytic pyrolysis method, using coal-based polyaniline particles prepared by an in-situ polymerization method as a carbon and nitrogen source, and nickel particles as a catalyst, respectively. Next NPC/NiO composites are achieved unexpectedly with plentiful NiO nanosheets and N content of 1.00 wt% after a liquid oxidation process. In NPC/NiO composites, porous carbon mainly presents in the amorphous state, while the incorporated nitrogen mainly presents in the form of pyrrolic N (92.9 at.%) and oxidized N (7.1 at.%). Plentiful NiO nanosheets are embedded in the pores or on the NPC surface. 33.3 at.% Ni 2 O 3 components exist in the surface of NiO nanosheets. NPC/NiO composites possess not only rich micropores, but also significant mesopores and nanoscale macropores. The BET specific surface area, BET average pore width and BJH adsorption average pore diameter are 627.5 m 2 /g, 2.0 nm and 5.1 nm, respectively. NPC/NiO composites demonstrate a high specific capacitance of 404.1 F/g at 1 A/g, and a good cycling stability maintaining high specific capacitance of 212.4 F/g (84.3% of the initial capacitance) at 5 A/g after 5000 cycles of charge and discharge, attributed to some honeycomb-shaped nanopores of carbon and large specific surface area of NiO nanosheets, and the synergistic effects between electric double-layer capacitance of NPC and pseudocapacitance of NiO. This study may provide a novel approach for the value-added applications of low-rank coal.

Hydrogen production from methanol reforming electrolysis at NiO nanosheets supported Pt nanoparticles

Ge Ma,Xiaoyu Zhang,Guofu Zhou,Xin Wang

In this work, ultrathin NiO nanosheets (NS) supported Pt nanoparticles (NP) nanohybrids (termed as Pt-NP/NiO-NS) are synthesized by cyanogel-NaBH 4 method, in-situ reduction and calcination treatment, in which the thickness of Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids is only 1.8 nm and their specific surface area is as large as 171.5 m 2  g −1 . The Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids can efficiently act as a versatile electrocatalyst for both methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environment. At Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids, only a 57 mV overpotential is required to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 for HER. The MOR current at Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids can achieve 179.9 mA cm −2 at 1.45 V potential, which is 15.9 times bigger than that at NiO-NS. The excellent electrocatalytic activity and durability of Pt-NP/NiO-NS nanohybrids can be ascribed to the morphology feature of NiO-NS and synergistic effect between Pt-NP and NiO-NS. The uniformly dispersed Pt-NP at NiO-NS can serve as active sites for HER. Meanwhile, Pt-NP can modify the electronic property of NiO-NS, and boost the formation of active Ni III OOH species. Consequently, a symmetric Pt-NP/NiO-NS||Pt-NP/NiO-NS methanol electrolyzer only requires 1.39 V electrolysis voltage for hydrogen production at cathode, accompanying with the production of value-added potassium formate at anode.

Rational Design of Hierarchical CoO/NiO Nanosheets on Conductive Polypyrrole Nanotubes for Peroxidase Mimicking and Sensing Application

Na Song,Ce Wang,Xiaofeng Lu

Recently, hybrid biocatalysts with a unique interfacial structure have attracted significant attention for enzyme mimicking due to their superior catalytic activity compared with the single component catalyst. In this work, novel sheet-on-tube heterostructured polypyrrole (PPy)@CoO/NiO nanotubes (NTs) are synthesized via an in situ growth strategy and are utilized for enzyme mimicking and sensing applications. The as-prepared PPy@CoO/NiO NTs can catalyze H2O2 into ·OH and realize the 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) oxidation, showing an excellent peroxidase-like property. Thanks to the synergistic effect between PPy NTs and CoO/NiO nanosheets, the catalytic performance of the resultant PPy@CoO/NiO NTs is superior to individual PPy NTs and bare CoO/NiO sheets as well as their physical mixture. In addition, the PPy@CoO/NiO NTs can also catalyze the H2O2 decomposing to generate O2, possessing a catalase-like property. Then, we perform a simple visual method for sensitively detecting H2O2 and ascorbic acid (AA). This work demonstrates a distinctive route to promote the catalytic performance of enzyme-like nanomaterials for huge potentials in biotechnology and environment fields.
