The reutilization of exhausted biochar is attracting extensive interest among researchers. In this study, the biochar generated from Chinese fir with natural regular porous structure that adsorbed Cd 2+ /Ni 2+ at different concentration levels was used as the precursor, and then combined with simple hydrothermal vulcanization and ion deposition to generate the p-n heterojunction between NiS and CdS compounds (NiS-CdS@C) in situ. The hybrids with 3 cycles of NiS deposition reduced the interfacial transmission resistance from 80 Ω to 40 Ω, and increased photocurrent density by 5 times, thus effectively promoting the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. The simultaneous removal of As(III) and Cr(VI) was selected to evaluate the oxidation and reduction capacity of the visible light/NiS-CdS@C/oxalate system. The results indicated that 10 mg/L As(III) and Cr(VI) were completely and simultaneously removed with 0.75 mM oxalate addition within 40 min in the system, and the NiS-CdS@C presented good durability and stability for oxalate activation. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments demonstrated that oxalate was activated by holes under light to produce •CO 2 − and enhanced the generation of additional •OH and •O 2 − , further contributing to the oxidation of As(III) and reduction of Cr(VI).

Photocatalytic N 2 fixation involves a nitrogen reduction reaction on the surface of the photocatalyst to convert N 2 into ammonia. Currently, the adsorption of N 2 is the limiting step for the N 2 reduction reaction on the surface of the catalyst. Based on the concept of photocatalytic water splitting, the photocatalytic efficiency can be greatly enhanced by introducing a co-catalyst. In this report, we proposed a new strategy, namely, the loading of a NiS co-catalyst on CdS nanorods for photocatalytic N 2 fixation. Theoretical calculation results indicated that N 2 was effectively adsorbed onto the NiS/CdS surface. Temperature programmed desorption studies confirmed that the N 2 molecules preferred to adsorb onto the NiS/CdS surface. Linear sweep voltammetry results revealed that the overpotential of the N 2 reduction reaction was reduced by loading NiS. Furthermore, transient photocurrent and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy indicated that the charge separation was enhanced by introducing NiS. Photocatalytic N 2 fixation was carried out in the presence of the catalyst dispersed in water without any sacrificial agent . As a result, 1.0 wt% NiS/CdS achieved an ammonia production rate of 2.8 and 1.7 mg L −1 for the first hour under full spectrum and visible light ( λ > 420 nm), respectively. The catalyst demonstrated apparent quantum efficiencies of 0.76%, 0.39% and 0.09% at 420, 475 and 520 nm, respectively. This study provides a new method to promote the photocatalytic efficiency of N 2 fixation.

Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) and their derivatives have been widely used in the field of photocatalytic water decomposition for hydrogen production . In this study, NiS/CdS was initially acquired and subsequently combined with DUT-67 via ultrasound to create a unique ternary photocatalyst NiS/CdS@DUT-67. The rate of hydrogen production for NiS/CdS@DUT-67 is 9618 μmol·g NiS/CdS −1 ·h −1 for NiS/CdS@DUT-67, which is 32 times and 2.5 times higher than that for CdS and NiS/CdS, respectively. Of particular interest is the fact that even after 50 h of photocatalysis, the hydrogen production rate did not show a significant decrease, demonstrating its excellent stability compared to CdS and NiS/CdS. In this ternary system, NiS and DUT-67 function as dual co-catalysts for CdS, collaborating to enhance charge separation during the photocatalysis. This study presents a clear demonstration of the advantages of utilizing metal–organic framework derivatives (MOF-derivatives) cophotocatalysts and their synergistic effect, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity and stability of semiconductors. This innovative approach provides a new perspective on constructing photocatalytic materials with exceptional performance.

Developing favorable charge transfer mode for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution in a photocatalyst is a promising way to enhance photocatalytic activity . In this study, MOF, decorated with different functional groups, was initially used as charge transfer mode convertor coupled with CdS/α-NiS-β-NiS. The NH 2 -UiO-66/CdS/α-NiS-β-NiS lead to twice and triple higher H 2 evolution compared to (OH) 2 -UiO-66/CdS/α-NiS-β-NiS and UiO-66/CdS/α-NiS-β-NiS respectively under simulated sunlight. The NH 2 -UiO-66 provides suitable energy band structure to formed Z-scheme with CdS/α-NiS-β-NiS, which plays a synergistic role in the photocatalytic process. The loading of α-NiS-β-NiS significantly improves the visible light absorption ability and provides abundant active sites. As a result, the α-NiS-β-NiS/CdS/NH 2 -UiO-66 show considerable photocatalytic hydrogen production rate of 17.88 mmol h −1 g −1 , which is 7.9 times and 2.5 times as high as-those of pure CdS and 7-α-NiS-β-NiS/CdS, and it also shows a prominent apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 14.7% at 420 nm. This work provides a new insight design a metal organic frameworks based heterojunction with highly-efficient photo-induced charge separation and excellent visible-light absorption ability.
