Membrane fouling as well as the “trade-off effect” between water permeability and selectivity are the grand challenges for nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this study, a macrocyclic molecule, Noria, was embedded in the polyamide layer to fabricate a thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane with high performances of separation and antifouling. Noria was first synthesized and dissolved in a piperazine (PIP) aqueous solution. Then the TFN membrane (i.e., PIP-Noria-TMC membrane, TMC is the abbreviation of 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride) was prepared by interfacial polymerization using PIP-Noria mixture as aqueous phase. The optimal PIP-Noria-TMC membrane reached 147.6 L m -2 h -1 MPa -1 of water permeability, which was almost twice that of the pristine NF membrane (i.e., PIP-TMC membrane). Meanwhile, the PIP-Noria-TMC membrane exhibited comparable Na 2 SO 4 rejection (∼98%) to the PIP-TMC membrane and outstanding mono/divalent salt selectivity. Besides, static adsorption tests using E.coli and bovine serum albumin (BSA) as the model foulants revealed that the surface of PIP-Noria-TMC membranes with high hydrophilicity and electronegative charge could effectively resist foulant attachment, which was also exhibited in the dynamic BSA filtration tests. Therefore, this work provided a practicable pathway to simultaneously overcome the permeability-selectivity trade-off and membrane fouling problems for the NF process.

Water perm-selectivity and membrane fouling are the major challenges faced by nanofiltration (NF) membranes. In this work, a thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane with excellent separation and antifouling performances was fabricated by uniformly doping S-Noria (sulfonic Noria, a macrocyclic molecule) in polyamide layer with high loading capacity. S-Noria synthesized by sulfonating Noria with taurine has smaller nanoparticle size of ~5.9 nm and better water dispersion compared with Noria. Therefore, the water permeability of the optimal S-TFN 0.75 membrane can be increased to 2.2 times and 3.4 times that of the Noria-TFN and control TFC membranes, respectively, while maintaining a comparable Na 2 SO 4 rejection of ~98 %. During the dynamic organic fouling tests, the S-TFN 0.75 membrane with higher surface hydrophilicity and surface capacity of sulfonic groups showed milder flux decay and better flux recovery than the control TFC membrane. In addition, the S-TFN 0.75 membranes could more effectively alleviate the membrane fouling exacerbated by “Ca 2+ bridging effect”. In conclusion, this study provides a reliable method for the fabrication of TFN membrane with a high load of S-Noria uniformly dispersed in the polyamide layer, solving the bottleneck problems of water perm-selectivity and membrane fouling.

Excessive carbon emission leads to global warming, threatening human survival. Membrane-based carbon capture technology is an important component of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology and one of the main upstream technologies for achieving carbon neutrality. PIM-1 materials exhibit high CO 2 permeability but lower CO 2 /N 2 selectivity, making it a significant focus to improve CO 2 /N 2 selectivity without sacrificing CO 2 permeability. In this work, Noria was introduced as a block through the bottom-up approach into the PIM-1 molecular chain, forming Noria-based porous organic polymer (NPOP) microregions with excellent CO 2 affinity. Additionally, the presence of NPOP increases the interchain gaps, resulting in a higher free volume. Consequently, the separation membrane prepared under optimal conditions broke the 2008 upper bound, with a 43.6 % increase in CO 2 permeability and a 41.7 % increase in CO 2 /N 2 selectivity. Furthermore, NPOP could form colloidal networks and provide rigidity to the separation membrane, endowing it with excellent aging resistance. After 6 months of aging, the CO 2 permeability of 0.5 %Noria decreased by only 33.4 % (67.4 % for pure PIM-1), indicating its strong potential for widespread applications.

Preparation of highly permeable and selective organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes is desired for precise chemical separations. Although the emerging nanomaterials and novel preparation methods have significantly boosted the membrane performance, it still requires much effort to drive them toward scale-up production with lower cost and easier preparation process. Herein, we constructed a polyarylate membrane from one kind of porous organic cage, namely Noria through traditional interfacial polymerization technique. Under the catalysis of triethylamine, Noria in aqueous phase would react with terephthaloyl chloride (TPC) in hexane to form a dense nano-film. The inner cavity of Noria molecule provided nano-channel for both polar and non-polar solvents to transport through the membrane. Specially, the Noria + TPC membrane exhibits a high permeance for methanol up to 18 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 . This is resulted from the low interaction energy between methanol and Noria as revealed by the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. In addition to the excellent performance, the simple preparation process with low-cost materials suggests the great potential of Noria + TPC membrane for practical application. Moreover, it would inspire the exploration of other molecules with tailored chemical structures for the assembly of high-performance membranes in future.

Polyphenol chemistry-based surface modification has received extensive attention in membrane science for its simplicity and low-cost. However, the limited molecular structures combined with the generally time-consuming process have largely restricted their further applications. Herein, we report an ultrafast and universal surface modification strategy based on the co-deposition of a macrocycle polyphenol molecule, Noria, and polyethyleneimine (PEI), for which only several seconds are required to obtain a uniform coating. Moreover, nanofiltration membranes were fabricated by traditional interfacial polymerization (IP) using the Noria–PEI co-deposited coating as the interlayer. Interestingly, the host–guest heterogeneous interaction between anchored Noria on the support surface and amine monomers in the aqueous phase could significantly alter the IP process and contribute to a unique nanostrand-hybrid morphology for piperazine and trimesoyl chloride-based membranes. Consequently, such novel morphology-based nanofiltration membranes exhibited a high permeance of up to 28 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 while still maintaining comparable divalent salt (Na2SO4, MgSO4, MgCl2 and CaCl2) rejections of above 96.0%, which are among the best performances for nanofiltration membranes. In addition to membrane science, this ultrafast surface modification strategy could arouse intense interest in host–guest chemistry at interfaces for fabricating multifunctional materials.

The release of textile dyeing wastewater results in significant environmental pollution and endangers human health. Membrane separation technology offers distinct advantages in textile wastewater treatment due to its energy efficiency, high performance, and excellent separation capabilities. This study demonstrates a facile MOF-polymer hybrid membrane fabrication strategy through amine-enhanced interfacial coordination. The introduced –NH 2 groups via Noria and polyethyleneimine (PEI) co-deposition would chelate metal ions, which enhances the heterogeneous nucleation and the compatibility of metal–organic framework (MOF) and polymer. The optimized membrane exhibits superior dye sieving performance, achieving Congo red rejection of 98.9% and water permeance of 23.2 L m -2 h −1 bar −1 . Microstructural analysis reveals dense intergrown zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) architectures, validating the co-deposition approach as an effective surface engineering protocol for constructing continuous MOF-polymer hybrid membranes with defect-free interfaces. The membrane also shows superior operational stability at different pH levels and during long-term operation, which shows great potential for practical application.

This research aimed to develop a high-performance organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane using porous organic cage Noria and nonplanar molecules to separate low-polarity bioactive components from a representative herbal extract and remove pigments like chlorophylls. The OSN membranes were fabricated and further modified via interfacial polymerization on polysulfone (PSF) ultrafiltration substrates. Among the fabricated membranes, the OSN-10 membrane, prepared by interfacial polymerization of Noria and cyclohexane-1,3,5-tricarbonyl chloride (HTC), demonstrated noteworthy performance. It demonstrated high solvent permeance of both methanol (29.28 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ) and ethanol (16.98 L m −2 h −1 bar −1 ). Importantly, a bioactive stilbene, cajaninstilbene acid (CSA), was successfully enriched from pigeon pea leaf extracts using OSN-10 membrane while maintaining a high chlorophyll rejection rate of over 90 %. The Noria-based OSN-10 membrane developed in this work exhibited impressive organic solvent permeability and an optimal molecular weight cut-off, making it highly suitable for CSA separation. Overall, the OSN-10 membrane demonstrated excellent separation performance, remarkable chlorophyll rejection rate, and significant potential for application in low-polarity natural product separation. Also, the membrane process significantly reduces the use of organic solvents, simplifies isolation and purification, and offers cost advantages with industrialization potential compared to traditional solvent extraction methods.

Reverse osmosis (RO) has been recognized as a promising technology to treat municipal wastewater . However, membrane fouling is still an important hurdle in the RO membrane operation. The present work demonstrates the facile and high-effective fabrication of a robust antifouling RO membrane by the codeposition of Noria with zwitterionic copolymers . This modified coating is irreversibly bound to the membrane during typical membrane operational conditions. Compared with the pristine membrane , the modified membrane (that is, the TFC-Co-8 membrane) possesses improved hydrophilicity , reduced roughness, and lower negative charge. Our results illustrate that the TFC-Co-8 membrane displays an excellent antifouling property with milder flux decline and higher flux recovery during protein and alginate filtrations. Additionally, the TFC-Co-8 membrane is applied in the treatment of actual secondary effluent and also exhibits a superior antifouling property, which is consistent with the results of the simulated solution. This work provides a reference for the design of antifouling RO membrane in reclaimed water production.

Zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) has emerged as an excellent candidate for the preparation of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membranes. Nevertheless, it still remains a great challenge to make the effective incorporation of ZIF-8 into the resulting TFN membrane feasible for facile application. Herein, we propose an in situ strategy to fabricate a ZIF-8 nanocrystal hybrid reverse osmosis membrane induced by the ultrafast surface modification of Noria–polyethyleneimine codeposition. By this method, ZIF-8 nanocubes with monodispersity were first formed on a modified support through the step-by-step deposition of precursor solutions. Afterward, a TFN membrane was fabricated by interfacial polymerization (IP) on a ZIF-8 loaded support. Due to the significantly altered IP process induced by the coexistence of Noria and ZIF-8 on the support surface, the TFN membrane depicts a distinct nanostrand–nanoparticle hybrid morphology, which endows the TFN membrane with excellent antifouling ability. Moreover, the permeance of the as-fabricated TFN membrane is up to 3.64 L·m–2·h–1·bar–1, nearly 2.7-fold higher than that of the nascent membrane, while it still maintains a high rejection toward NaCl. The in situ assembly strategy reported here could also pave a promising way for the fabrication of TFN membranes with other nanomaterials in future.
