The incorporation of nanomaterials into the selective layer of nanofiltration membranes can effectively enhance membrane performance. However, the agglomeration of nanoparticles inevitably leads to defects in the membrane PA layer. To address this issue, this paper reports a novel nanocomposite substrate-supported thin-film composite (TFC) nanofiltration membrane with good stability and excellent separation performance. Inorganic two-dimensional O–MoS 2 nanosheets were embedded into a polysulfone (PSF) substrate by a non-solvent-induced phase transition method. The PSF/O–MoS 2 nanocomposite was used as a support for the interfacial polymerization between piperazine and tricarbonyl chloride. The pore morphology of the nanocomposites changed dramatically as the O–MoS 2 content increased. With the optimal content of O–MoS 2 in substrates was 0.06 wt%, the pore structure of the substrate changed from a larger irregular bubble pore structure to a finger-like pore structure. The nanocomposite matrix-supported TFC membrane exhibited 1.7 times higher water flux and better salt removal compared to the control membrane. Meanwhile, the obtained nanofiltration membranes showed excellent separation performance in treating simulated rare earth wastewater (P507) containing surfactants with a desalination rate of 97.08%. The desalination rate also reached 95% in a 24- h performance test on real rare earth wastewater (50-fold dilution), demonstrating its great potential for industrial applications. This work also highlights that modification of substrates with functional nanomaterials can provide a versatile approach to enhance the separation performance and stability of TFC membranes.

Advanced membranes with high water flux, excellent salt selectivity as well as superior fouling resistance are highly demanded in water desalination and water treatment. Herein, a new nanocomposite nanofiltration (NF) membrane was reported by introducing the two-dimensional (2D) oxidized molybdenum disulfide (O–MoS 2 ) into the polyamide selective layer. O–MoS 2 with high hydrophilicity and strong electronegativity was synthesized by the oxidation and exfoliation process. The nanocomposite membrane was successfully prepared through interfacial polymerization with the incorporation of O–MoS 2 into organic phase. O–MoS 2 was successfully embedded in the membranes as visualized by SEM and TEM characterizations. The hydrophilicity and electronegativity of the nanocomposite membranes were improved. Compared with the pristine membrane, the performance of the membrane was best when the concentration of O–MoS 2 was 0.010 wt/v%. Consequently, the Na 2 SO 4 rejection increased to 97.9%, and the water flux was 2.5 times higher. In addition, the membrane displayed excellent antifouling properties. The results showed that O–MoS 2 as an excellent 2D modifier would bring more breakthrough improvements in the field of membrane separation .

Rational design of highly efficient photocatalysts based on molybdenum cocatalysts is prospective to achieve hydrogen evolution under visible light. Herein, Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles decorated with O-doped MoS2 nanosheets (denoted as O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S) were successfully synthesized. The incorporation of O atoms, which could trigger defects and enlarge the interlayer distance of MoS2, was achieved by a simple hydrothermal method. The performances of O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S composites for catalyzing hydrogen evolution are rapidly enhanced with increasing contents of O-MoS2. The resultant 12 wt% O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S composite exhibits superior stability and a satisfactory hydrogen production rate up to 84.32 mmol g−1 h−1 and the apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm is 46.92%, which is 3.18 times higher than that of Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles. To the best of our understanding, such an exceptional activity of 12 wt% O-MoS2/Mn0.5Cd0.5S prepared in this work for hydrogen evolution is one of the highest among all reported Mn–Cd–S-based catalysts. The markedly strengthened activity is attributed to the improved light absorption and effective separation of photoinduced carriers between O-MoS2 nanosheets and Mn0.5Cd0.5S nanoparticles. This work indicates that O-MoS2 is a potential cocatalyst for the rational construction of efficient photocatalysts.

The trade-off between permeability and selectivity, along with the issue of membrane fouling, has constrained the widespread application of ultrafiltration (UF) membranes in recycling rare earth wastewater. Here, we present the incorporation of tannic acid (TA) modified molybdenum disulfide oxide (O-MoS 2 ) as a functional enhancer to fabricate polyethersulfone (PES) based mixed matrix membranes through a nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) approach. Compared to the unmodified PES membrane, the integration of TA-O-MoS 2 significantly improves the hydrophilicity, porosity in the mixed matrix membrane. By altering the concentration of TA-O-MoS 2 , the TA-O-MoS 2 /PES UF membrane achieves enhanced hydrophilicity and charge properties, resulting in a remarkable improvement in separation performance. Specifically, the optimized membrane M2 (TA-O-MoS 2 addition of 0.1 wt%) exhibits a water flux of 140.98 Lm −2 h −1 bar −1 and a PEG 20000 rejection rate of 91.00 %, representing increases of 180 % and 120 % over the control PES membrane, respectively. Notably, membrane M2 effectively retains 91.31 % of macromolecular organic compounds in rare earth wastewater, while permitting nearly complete passage of inorganic salts, for instance CaCl 2 (3.26 %) and MgSO 4 (4.84 %). Moreover, the TA-O-MoS 2 /PES membrane demonstrates robust antifouling properties and exceptional durability, indicating its significant potential for efficient treatment and resource recovery in rare earth wastewater.

Oxidized molybdenum disulfide (O–MoS 2 ) as a two-dimensional (2D) functional nanosheets material, has been used to fabricate high separation performance nanofiltration (NF) membranes for water treatment. However, the effect and regulation mechanism of the degree of oxidation on structure and separation performance of O–MoS 2 modified NF membrane has not yet been fully understood. In this work, O–MoS 2 with different oxidation degrees was synthesized by adjusting the oxidation time and KMnO 4 oxidant content via Hummers’ method. The results demonstrated that the O–MoS 2 synthesized under with an oxidation time of 3 h and MoS 2 :KMnO 4 ratio of 1:2 had excellent stability under acidic, neutral and alkaline conditions. The pure water flux increased 2.5 times and the Na 2 SO 4 salt rejection increased to 97.6% with this O–MoS 2 incorporation compared to the control membrane. The influence of different oxidation degrees on the performance of O–MoS 2 is a breakthrough finding of this work to provide a theoretical basis for the application of O–MoS 2 in the field of membrane separations .

A novel thin-film nanofiltration (NF) membrane was prepared successfully by interfacial polymerization of piperazine and trimesoyl chloride on a porous molybdenum disulfide oxide (O-MoS 2 ) modified polysulfone (PSf) substrate with greatly enhanced separation performance. In this work, scanning electron microscopy confirmed that the optimized PSf substrate formed elongated finger-like pores during the phase inversion process, significantly different from other membranes and key to improving the water transport and desalination of the membrane. The effects of different dye molecular structures, varieties, and charges, and the feed solution and salt concentrations in the blend solution on salt and dye rejection and water flux of NF membranes were explored. Compared with the control membrane, the optimized membrane’s rejection performance and water permeability were greatly improved when treating simulated dye wastewater. After the introduction of O-MoS 2 (0.06 wt.%), the introduction of O-MoS 2 increased the chromotropic acid 2B and Rose Bengal rejection rates of the membrane compared to the original, from the original of 97.73%, 99.79% to 99.41% and 99.99%, respectively, and the water flux enhanced from the beginning of 32.8, 32.0–43.2 and 43.7 L/m 2 ·h, respectively. Furthermore, in a 120 h simulated dye wastewater treatment stability test, the optimized F6 membrane showed stronger flux stability and excellent rejection performance, providing its vast potential for application in dye wastewater treatment.
