Two Schiff base fluorescein probes (FDA, FDH) based on fluorescein-aldehyde and nitroaniline derivatives were synthesized. The effects of amino and hydrazine substituents in fluorescein backbones were examined via fluorescence and absorbance spectra. In the presence of Ce 4+ , the fluorescence of FDA was quenched due to the ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT). Hypochloric acid can react with the C N bond, and blocking the photo induced electron transfer (PET) of FDH leads to enhancement of the fluorescence. FDA showed detection limits for Ce 4+ and OCl − as low as 63 nM in concentration range of 0–4 μM. FDH showed detection limits for OCl − as low as 0.8 μM in concentration rang 0–100 μM. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane containing the probes was prepared for the real-time qualitative detection of Ce 4+ and OCl − in real water samples. The probes were successfully applied to biological imaging in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and are expected to find applications in biosensing.
Hypochlorite (OCl − ) plays important roles both in physiological and pathological processes, the detection of which is of great significance. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe based on the triphenylamine-type schiff base derivative (TPAD) was developed to detect OCl − . Probe TPAD exhibited specific fluorescence response toward ClO − with the fluorescence quenching rate up to 80%, and the detection limit was estimated to be 0.8 μM. The sensing mechanism study demonstrated that TPAD reacted with ClO − via an oxidation process, which was evidenced by MS and NMR characterization. Moreover, owing to the excellent sensing properties and negligible cytotoxicity, TPAD was successfully applied in the bioimaging of OCl − in living A549 cells.

The microenvironment in biological systems is associated with pathological of organisms. In this work, HBTC, a red-emitting probe with abilities of responding to OCl − and environmental viscosity was designed and synthesized to preliminary apply in cell imaging . HBTC showed weak fluorescence in the dissolved state due to intramolecular rotation, and it showed about 620 nm red light emission when molecules are restricted. Through red-to-turquoise ratiometric fluorescence signal, HBTC showed the capacity to selective detecte OCl − , and the LOD was calculated to be 0.141 μM in OCl − concentration range of 2–20 μM. Finally, HBTC was used for preliminary cell fluorescence imaging. It is expected that HBTC will be used to study the diseases related between OCl − concentration and viscosity in cells.
