(MoS4)2− intercalated CAMoS4⋅LDH material for the efficient and facile sequestration of antibiotics from aqueous solution

Kiran Gupta,Jiang-Bo Huo,Jia-Cheng E. Yang,Ming-Lai Fu,Baoling Yuan,Zhangxu Chen

We introduced (MoS 4 ) 2− moiety into the lamellar layers of Ca 0.66 Al 0.34 (OH) 2 (NO 3 ) 0.34 ⋅yH 2 O to fabricate Ca 0.66 Al 0.34 (OH) 2 (MoS 4 ) 0.17 ⋅yH 2 O (CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH), a stable and efficient adsorbent for removal of two envoy Fluoroquinolones (FQs), Ciprofloxacin (CIP) and Ofloxacin (OFL), from contaminated aquatic sources. Various characterization tools, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy, Energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer, transmission electron microscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric analyses etc. were applied to confirm structural and compositional changes during the synthesis and adsorption properties of CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH. The efficiency of adsorbent was investigated by evaluating different parameters including contact time, pH of solution, initial concentration of pollutant, and effect of temperature. By using CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH as adsorbent, we found more efficient removal of CIP than that of OFL due to the steric hindrance. The highest uptake of 707.20 mg/g and 476.74 mg/g of CIP and OFL, respectively, was found at pH of 6 with improved kinetics and easily reusability for these representative antibiotics models so far. Removal kinetics of both FQs were found to better follow the pseudo-second-order kinetic model than the pseudo-first-order. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm was employed to understand the removal process, suggesting monolayer chemisorption mechanism. The adsorbate-adsorbent interaction revealed remarkable features originate from the combination of weak hydrogen bond interaction between thio group and NH 2 + group of antibiotic and electrostatic interaction between positive LDH layer and COO − group of antibiotic as well, and anion exchange mechanisms, which were also confirmed by XRD, FTIR, XPS and Raman spectrum etc. obtained after adsorption. It is proposed that all (MoS 4 ) 2− moiety offers stability to the CA-MoS 4 ⋅LDH structure to avoid its solubility under ambient environments.

Revolutionizing Bioremediation: Synergistic Strains Tackle Ofloxacin Contamination

Wang Haoran,Wang Jihong,Chu Yu

In this study, to mitigate the ecological risks associated with ofloxacin residues in the environment, two drug-resistant strains, Aerococcus sp. DORC01 and Aspergillus sp. DYN01, were isolated and acclimatized from chronically exposed cow dung. Their efficacy in removing ofloxacin was optimized using both single-organism and mixed-co-culture systems, in conjunction with response surface methodology. Under optimal conditions for single-organism systems, DORC01 and DYN01 achieved 68.7% and 51.8% removal of 100 mg/L ofloxacin over a 7-day period, respectively. The optimal conditions for DORC01 were 29.61 °C, 70.05 mg/L substrate concentration, and 0.46% bacterial load, while for DYN01, they were pH 5.97, 72.99 mg/L substrate concentration, and 0.50% bacterial load. The mixed mycelium spheres were further prepared using a co-culture method with a 3:1 ratio, resulting in an enhanced predicted maximum removal rate of 93.91% under conditions of 33.50 °C, pH 7.45, 0.37% bacterial volume, and a substrate concentration of 74.96 mg/L. This represents a 45% improvement over the efficiency observed with single bacterial cultures. Inactivation experiments demonstrated that live bacteria facilitated degradation primarily through biosorption, with degradation being the dominant process. After 7 days, the removal rate achieved by live bacteria was significantly higher than that of inactivated bacteria. This study is the first to establish a synergistic system involving Aerococcus and Aspergillus, offering a novel strategy for the efficient bioremediation of antibiotic contamination in livestock and poultry environments.

Spray-dried magnetic chitosan/Fe3O4/halloysite nanotubes/ofloxacin microspheres for sustained release of ofloxacin

Qin Wang,Junping Zhang,Aiqin Wang

A series of magnetic chitosan/Fe3O4/halloysite nanotubes/ofloxacin (CTS/Fe3O4/HNTs/OFL) microspheres was prepared by spray-drying for the sustained release of OFL. CTS was in situ crosslinked by glutaraldehyde in the spray-drying process. The magnetic microspheres were characterized by FT-IR, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The magnetic properties, encapsulation efficiency, drug loading and in vitro sustained release properties of the magnetic microspheres for OFL were also evaluated. The CTS/Fe3O4/HNTs/OFL microspheres show superparamagnetic properties and fast magnetic response. The Fe3O4 nanoparticles have a remarkable effect on the surface morphology of the microspheres compared with HNTs. The encapsulation efficiency and the cumulative release are closely related to HNTs and Fe3O4 contents, crosslinking density and CTS concentration. OFL is released from the magnetic CTS/Fe3O4/HNTs/OFL microspheres via anomalous transport.

N-doped activated carbon for high-efficiency ofloxacin adsorption

Song He,Qilin Chen,Guanyu Chen,Guibin Shi,Chichi Ruan,Mengmeng Feng,Yuansheng Ma,Xin Jin,Xinyu Liu,Chunhua Du,Chunxiang He,Huaming Dai,Chengyang Cao

Preparation of high specific surface area activated carbon from rice husk for the removal of ofloxacin from medical wastewater. The optimum conditions for the preparation of activated carbon were a nitrogen doping ratio of 1:1:4 and an activation temperature of 800 °C (AC). The samples were characterised by N 2 adsorption isotherms , BET, FT-IR, TGA , XPS and SEM. The data showed that the specific surface area of AC was up to 1818.20 m 2  g −1 with a total pore volume of 1.12 cm 3  g −1 . AC formed N-containing functional groups on the surface and had good thermal stability. Scientific batch experiment studies were conducted to investigate the effect of pH, initial concentration, temperature and coexisting ions on the ofloxacin adsorption. The q e reached a maximum value of 780 ± 20 mg g −1 and maintained a removal efficiency of 51.1% after four regeneration cycles. The adsorption equilibrium data and the adsorption process were well represented by Langmuir model and general-order kinetic model, respectively. Thermodynamic studies of adsorption had shown that the adsorption process was autogenous and endothermic. Possible adsorption mechanisms for this material were also analysed. Finally, treatment of synthetic medical wastewater with AC resulted in a high removal rate of 98.3%. The superior adsorption properties combined with ease of preparation, ease of separation and excellent regeneration properties, make this material potentially effective for the removal ofloxacin from real medical wastewater.

Preparation of Ofloxacin-Restricted Access Media–Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Its Selective Recognition of Ofloxacin in Milk Samples

Wang Xia,Zhao Lijuan,Sun Zhian,Gong Bolin

Abstract In this study, a novel restricted access media–molecularly imprinted polymer (RAM–MIP) was prepared by precipitation polymerization using ofloxacin (OFLX) as a template, methacrylic acid as functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker and glycidyl methacrylate as pro-hydrophilic co-monomer for specific recognition and sensitive determination of trace ofloxacin in milk samples. The RAM–MIPs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Then, recognition ability and hydrophilicity of RAM–MIPs were evaluated and the results indicated that the prepared RAM–MIPs exhibited excellent recognition ability and good hydrophilicity. Enrofloxacin, gatifloxacin, and sulfamerazine were used as competitive molecules to research the selective adsorption capacity of the RAM–MIPs. The maximum adsorption capacity of the RAM–MIPs for OFLX was 17.49 mg/g, which was almost double that of the non-imprinted polymers, RAM–NIPs. Under the same conditions, the binding ability of MIP to bovine serum albumin was calculated to be 31.19%, while RAM–MIPs was only 7.6%. Furthermore, a molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction column was prepared with RAM–MIPs material and then reused ten times with a recovery rate above 75%. Combined with high-performance liquid chromatography analysis, this material can be used to effectively purify and separate OFLX from milk. This work was beneficial to eliminate the protein deposition and increased the simplicity and accuracy of analytical method for the determination of trace OFLX in milk samples. Graphical Abstract

Preparation and modification of bagasse biochar unveiling ofloxacin wastewater adsorption

Maoyou Ye,Yi Fang,Hongjing Xiang,Hui Liu,Huimin Yan,Bingmin Wang,Xinle Lin,Jialin Liang,Wei Qian

Currently, ofloxacin (OFX) is widely used in various medical treatment and aquaculture industries. However, its production and application produces waste which pollutes the natural environment and causes ecological damage. The application of biochar is a crucial way to remove OFX antibiotics from wastewater. In this paper, bagasse was used as the material to be pyrolyzed to obtain bagasse biochar (BC). BC was modified with HNO3 and KOH to prepare acid-modified sugarcane biochar (HBC) and alkali-modified sugarcane biochar and subsequently applied to the treatment of ofloxacin wastewater. The results showed that the adsorption capacity of HBC was 2.2 times higher than that of BC, and it had better adsorption performance. When the dosage of acid-modified biochar was 1 g/L and the initial pH of the solution was 7.0, the OFX removal rate reached 88.5% after 90 min of reaction. HBC has good stability, and the OFX removal efficiency is still up to 78.5% after 5 cycles. According to the adsorption simulation results, the adsorption of the three biochar materials is more consistent with the Freundlich adsorption model, and the simulated linear correlation coefficient is higher than 0.99. The Kfr value of HBC is 6.6042, which exhibits the highest adsorption capacity. Moreover, the three biochars exhibit better simulation results in pseudo-second-order kinetics fitting, and the linear correlation coefficients are above 0.99. The adsorption mechanism of bagasse biochar for ofloxacin in wastewater was π-π electron donor–acceptor interactions. The results show that bagasse biochar has good feasibility in the treatment of ofloxacin wastewater.

Simultaneous detection of tetracyclines and ofloxacin via carbon dots based ratiometric fluorescence and portable hydrogel-based visual detection of ofloxacin

Hui Wang,Xiaoyu Luo,Chengqian Li,Qian Wang,Fei Shang,Zhonghong Li,Yong Han

Determination of antibiotic residues is vital to food safety because of their potential bioaccumulation through the food chain. Herein, orange-red carbon dots (O-CDs) were fabricated by optimizing reaction conditions for fluorometric sensing of tetracyclines (TCs) and ofloxacin (OFx). Upon 375 nm excitation, the O-CDs exhibit dual emission peaks at 400 nm and 530 nm. TCs quench both emissions, while OFx quenches the emission at 400 nm but enhances that at 530 nm. Self-calibrated ratiometric sensing (F 400 /F 530 ) enabled simultaneous discrimination of TCs and OFx, achieving low detection limits (0.17–0.49 μM) with recoveries of 88.34–103.50% and relative standard deviations (RSDs) of 0.95–5.51% in real samples. Furthermore, a portable hydrogel-based colorimetric sensor for OFx was developed, enabling rapid visual detection via a smartphone over a 1–1000 μM range, with a detection limit of 0.98 μM, recoveries of 99.33–103.60%, and RSDs of 1.50–3.42%, offering a promising strategy for antibiotic monitoring and food-safety applications.

Natural vivianite activates peroxymonosulphate for efficient ofloxacin degradation: Performance and mechanism

Teng Bao,Cheng long Li,Wei Wei,Mekdimu Mezemir Damtie,Zhijie Chen,Haijiao Xie,Bing-Jie Ni

Antibiotics (e.g., ofloxacin) pollution is an emerging environmental concern due to its persistence and potential health risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) offer promising solutions, yet their practical application is often limited by catalyst cost and stability. Here, we report the use of natural vivianite—a low-cost iron phosphate mineral—as an efficient peroxymonosulphate (PMS) activator for ofloxacin degradation. Under the optimised conditions, 97 % of ofloxacin was effectively degraded within 60 min. The ofloxacin degradation ratio could still reach 76 % after three consecutive cycles. Mechanistic investigations revealed Mn 2+ and Co 2+ isomorphic substitutions within the vivianite lattice, which induced electron cloud redistribution and promoted the formation of metal–oxygen–metal and metal–oxygen bonds. These structural changes enhanced charge transfer and facilitated PMS adsorption and activation via both surface-bound sites and leached phosphate species. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed that degradation proceeded through synergistic radical (·OH, SO 4 · - , O 2 · - ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) pathways. Importantly, the degradation products exhibited significantly lower toxicity than ofloxacin itself, underscoring the environmental relevance of this process. These findings highlight the potential of natural vivianite as a cost-effective and sustainable PMS activator for antibiotic removal in water treatment applications.

Exonuclease I–assisted electrochemical detection of ofloxacin enhanced with MXene/AuNP accelerator

Zhang Yan,Yan Yuting,Huang Yue

An innovative electrochemical biosensor is proposed for the sensitive detection of ofloxacin (OFL) by integrating exonuclease I (Exo I)–assisted recognition-transduction strategy into the MXene/AuNP-enhanced electrochemical platform. Through ingenious design, the presence of OFL triggers the competitive displacement reaction and enables Exo I to hydrolyze the released single-stranded DNA probe containing the sequence of Pb 2+ -DNAzyme, protecting the signal probes on the electrode surface from DNAzyme cleavage, which eventually brings about a remarkable electrochemical signal positively related to the concentration of OFL. MXene/AuNPs with excellent conductivity, large specific surface area, and good chemical stability are employed as the electrode substrate to efficiently accelerate charge transfer and increase the loading capacity for signal probes, leading to the enhancement of signal output and endowing the biosensor with high sensitivity, rapid response, and fine robustness. Taking advantage of OFL recognition–initiated Exo I hydrolysis to DNAzyme, the electrochemical platform with “signal-off/on” mode can detect OFL with good specificity and reduced background interference. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the involved sensing elements, the developed electrochemical biosensor achieves a low detection limit of 0.47 pg mL −1 with a broad linear range and exhibits satisfactory detection performance in real food samples, indicating potential practical applicability in food safety monitoring. Synthesis of a trivalent copper complex for efficient degradation of antibiotic ofloxacin

Hui Hong,Minghao Xu,Xuerui Yang,Lei Zhou,Jean-Marc Chovelon,Guangli Xiu

Copper-based catalysts have been widely used in heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) to degrade emerging contaminants, with trivalent copper species (Cu(III)) often identified as crucial intermediates. However, the current understanding of the reactivity and potential oxidation mechanism associated with such reactive species remains quite limited. In the present study, a stable Cu(III) complex was synthesized, and its reactivity towards a typical fluoroquinolone antibiotic, ofloxacin (OFX), was comprehensively investigated. The results revealed that Cu(III) itself functioned as the primary oxidizing agent instead of secondary hydroxyl radicals generated during OFX decomposition, which exhibited high reactivity over a wide pH range (3.0–9.0) with molar ratio of Cu(III) to OFX between 1:2 and 3:1. Interestingly, prevalent constituents of natural water, including (bi)carbonate (0–10 mM), chloride (0–10 mM), nitrate (0–10 mM) and humic acid (0–30 mg/L), displayed minimal influence on the oxidation efficiency of Cu(III). Piperazine moiety was identified as the primary reaction site, and three different pathways including tertiary amine oxidation, hydroxylation, and N-demethylation process were proposed. The detailed oxidation mechanisms were further illustrated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. This study contributes to the theoretical foundation for investigating the mechanism of Cu(III)-mediated oxidation of antibiotics.

Synergy between microelectrolysis and trimetallic MOFs activates perovskite monosulfate for ofloxacin degradation

Fangke Yu,Huiqi Hao,Jie Gou,Haoqing Li

Based on the carbonization of metal–organic frameworks, this study developed and synthesized a catalyst, referred to as tri-metallic MOF carbonization (TMC), that enhanced electron transfer to facilitate the generation of singlet oxygen. For 20 mg L−1 OFX, micro-electrolysis of PMS in the presence of the TMC catalyst demonstrated remarkable degradation efficiency, attaining 90% degradation in 20 minutes, with a reaction rate constant of 0.18 min−1. The system was catalytically active and capable of degrading different types of pollutants with high efficiency over a wide pH range. The doping of Co/Cu metals promoted the production of 1O2 and high-valent metals, leading to a charge transfer between different metals (Cu → Co, Cu → Fe). The oxidation of TMC by PMS led to the hetero-cleavage of the O–O bond and produced high-valent metal–oxygen. CoFe2O4 and CuFe2O4 with spinel crystal structures were observed to exhibit increased content of Co(II) and Cu(II), respectively. Co(II) was found to be used as an active site for activation of PMS to produce 1O2, and Cu(II) facilitated the non-radical pathway of the reaction. Fe(II) generated by high-valent metals via PMS and the oxidative degradation of electron-rich pollutants. Therefore, high-valent metals and 1O2 play crucial roles in the activation mechanism of perovskite monosulfate (PMS).

Degradation of ofloxacin by UVA-LED/TiO2 nanotube arrays photocatalytic fuel cells

Xia Bin,Yao Juan-juan,Han Chen-xi,Zhang Zhi,Chen Xiang-yu,Fang Yan-juan

The degradation of ofloxacin (OFX) at low concentration in aqueous solution by UVA-LED/TiO 2 nanotube arrays photocatalytic fuel cells (UVA-LED/TiO 2 NTs PFCs) was investigated. TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TiO 2 NTs) photoanode prepared by anodization-constituted anatase–rutile bicrystalline framework. The results indicated that the degradation efficiency of OFX by UVA-LED/TiO 2 NTs PFC was significantly enhanced by 14.3% compared with UVA-LED/TiO 2 NTs photocatalysis. The pH affected the degradation efficiency markedly; the highest degradation efficiency (95.0%) and the pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant k value (0.049 min −1 ) were achieved in neutral condition (pH 7.0). The degradation efficiency increased with the increasing concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the UVA-LED/TiO 2 NTs PFC. The main reactive species of OFX degradation are positive holes (h + ) and superoxide ion radicals (O ·− 2 ) in a DO sufficient condition. Furthermore, the possible pathways of OFX degradation were proposed.
