In this work, KTa 0.2 Nb 0.8 O 3 –BaTiO 3 (KTN–BT) hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. Flexible nanocomposite films comprised of poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) matrix and KTN–BT hybrid fillers of different molar ratio were prepared by solution-casting. It is revealed that the introduction of BT to the KTN causes decreased grain size and homogenous morphology, improving the dielectric constant, breakdown strengthen and energy density of nanocomposite films. Typically, the nanocomposite film containing 40 vol% KTN–BT possesses a dielectric constant of 322 at 100 Hz, which is 8.7 times than that of pure polymer. Also, nanocomposite film with < 10 vol% of filler could achieve high breakdown strength of over 300 MV m −1 . The energy density of the film containing 2 vol% KTN–BT filler is 61.4% higher than that of pure P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) polymer. (7.1 J cm −3 compared to 4.4 J cm −3 .) In addition, the nanocomposites also displayed good flexibility and kept excellent dielectric properties after bending and folding. All the improved performance enables these composites to meet the requirements of many flexible electronic devices and energy storage devices.

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) based polymer/ceramic nanocomposites for high energy density dielectrics have long been plagued by their low discharging efficiency (40–60%), which originates from the matrix with high bulk ferroelectric relaxation and the high-k ceramics with large conduction loss. In this work, a linear-like PVDF-based polymer dielectric is synthesized through grafting poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) onto main chains of poly(vinyl fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) terpolymer via an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) process. PMMA grafted terpolymer (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)-g-PMMA) shows linear-like dielectric characteristics accompanied with greatly enhanced discharging efficiency of ∼80% under 250 MV/m, which is over 100% higher than that of pristine terpolymer. To further improve its breakdown strength and discharging efficiency, the grafted terpolymer are then compounded with ultrasonic-exfoliated mica nanosheets ( e Mica) by solution-cast method. Thanks to the low hysteresis loss of linear-like dielectric matrix and the high insulating 2D mica nanosheets, the composite with the highest discharging efficiency of ∼78% under 250 MV/m is achieved. The maximum energy density of the optimized composite reaches 9.6 J/cm 3 , which is nearly 290% that of the pristine terpolymer. Besides, its discharging efficiency is about 74% under 450 MV/m, which is much more advantageous than the other PVDF-based polymer/ceramics composite dielectrics. This work suggests that utilizing polymer matrix with linear dielectric property and fillers with high insulating 2D structure might be a facile strategy to achieve composite dielectrics with simultaneously high energy density and high discharging efficiency.

A dielectric film with high breakdown strength and dielectric constant are crucial for the reliable operation of electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD). In this study, barium titanate (BaTiO3) nanoparticles modified with a silane coupling agent (KH550) were incorporated into poly(vinyl fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) to prepare a BaTiO3–KH550/P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA composite film to enhance the breakdown strength and dielectric constant of a dielectric layer. Results revealed that BaTiO3–KH550 is uniformly dispersed within the P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA polymer matrix. When the BaTiO3–KH550 content is 10 wt %, the dielectric constant reached 24.6, and the energy density was 2.65 J cm–3, representing increases of 94% and 73%, respectively, compared to the pure P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)/PMMA film, where was 12.7 and 1.53 J cm–3. Additionally, the breakdown strength of all films remains above 150 kV mm–1 due to the strong interfacial interaction between PMMA and P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE). Furthermore, the breakdown strength can keep at 194.90 kV mm–1. Electrowetting experiments demonstrated that the composite film exhibited a high initial contact angle of 105.04°, with a contact angle variation range of 35.3° under a low DC voltage ranged from 0 to 50 V. The results indicated that this film is potential for applications in low-cost and high-dielectric-performance EWOD dielectric layer materials.

Dielectric materials with superior dielectric properties are pivotal for enhancing the performance of electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) devices. In this work, MWCNTs@SiO2 core–shell-structured fillers were fabricated by coating multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with a uniform SiO2 outer layer. This innovative core–shell structure was incorporated into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) organic matrix to fabricate composite films with enhanced dielectric properties. The incorporation of core–shell fillers significantly enhanced the microcapacitor effect and Maxwell–Wagner–Sillars interface polarization. At a low filler loading of 4 wt %, the composite achieved a high dielectric constant of 25.4 (at 100 Hz), representing a 108.2% enhancement compared to the pristine polymer matrix, while maintaining a low dielectric loss as low as 0.05. Furthermore, the SiO2 shell effectively mitigated inhomogeneous electric field distribution induced by dielectric constant mismatch, reducing field distortion and consequently enhancing the breakdown strength. Notably, under a DC voltage below 50 V, a high contact angle modulation range of 38.3° was achieved, representing a 151.97% enhancement compared to the pristine polymer matrix. These findings provide a new strategy for developing high-performance dielectric materials for EWOD applications.

Nanocomposites containing inorganic fillers embedded in polymer matrices have exhibited great potential applications in capacitors. Therefore, an effective method to improve the dielectric properties of polymer is to design novel fillers with a special microstructure. In this work, a combination of hydrothermal method and precipitation method was used to synthesize in situ SnO2nanoparticles on the surface of one-dimensional TiO2nanowires (TiO2NWs), and the TiO2NWs@SnO2fillers well-dispersed into the poly (vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE)] polymer. Hybrid structure TiO2NWs @SnO2introduce extra interfaces, which enhance the interfacial polarization and the dielectric constant. Typically, at 10 vol.% low filling volume fraction, the composite with TiO2NWs @SnO2shows a dielectric constant of 133.4 at 100 Hz, which is almost four times that of polymer. Besides, the TiO2NWs prevents the direct contact of SnO2with each other in the polymer matrix, so the composites still maintain good insulation performance. All the improved performance indicates these composites can be widely useful in electronic devices. Keywords:hybrid structure;composites;interfacial polarization;dielectric performances

Dielectric polymer-based nanocomposites have attracted significant attention in recent years for energy storage applications because of their potential high permittivity and breakdown strength. The coupling effect of a nanofiller/matrix interface plays a crucial role in the dielectric and electric properties of polymer-based nanocomposites. In this paper, three kinds of side-chain liquid crystalline fluoric-polymers, denoted as P-nF (n = 3, 5 or 7, which is the number of terminal fluoric groups), were grafted on the surface of BaTiO3 nanoparticles by a surface-initiated reversible-addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization method. The nanocomposite films were prepared via core–shell BaTiO3 nanoparticles dispersed in a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene-chlorotrifluoroethylene) P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) polymer matrix. The frequency dependent dielectric properties and energy storage capability of the polymer nanocomposites were studied. The results showed that the permittivity and energy densities of the polymer nanocomposites depended on the molecular structure of the modifier, especially the number of electron-rich fluoric groups. Firstly, all modified BaTiO3 nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix, resulting in the polymer nanocomposites presenting a higher breakdown strength compared with the unmodified BaTiO3 nanoparticles. Secondly, the changes in the nanocomposites’ permittivity exhibited diversity for three modifiers due to many influential factors. Thirdly, compared with neat P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE), the discharge energy densities of the polymer nanocomposites are all significantly improved. The highest discharge energy densities of nanocomposites with 5 vol% P-3F@BT reached 14.5 J cm−3. These findings suggest that the optimal interfacial modifier should be carefully decided by combining various properties of the nanocomposites for energy storage.
