Study on the Effect and Mechanism of Impurity Aluminum on the Solvent Extraction of Rare Earth Elements (Nd, Pr, La) by P204-P350 in Chloride Solution

Wenjie Zhang,Xian Xie,Xiong Tong,Yunpeng Du,Qiang Song,Dongxia Feng

Solvent extraction is the most widely used method for separation and purification of rare earth elements, and organic extractants such as di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) and di(1-methyl-heptyl) methyl phosphonate (P350) are most commonly used for industrial applications. However, the presence of impurity ions in the feed liquid during extraction can easily emulsify the extractant and affect the quality of rare earth products. Aluminum ion is the most common impurity ion in the feed liquid, and it is an important cause of emulsification of the extractant. In this study, the influence of aluminum ion was investigated on the extraction of light rare earth elements by the P204-P350 system in hydrochloric acid medium. The results show that Al3+competes with light rare earths in the extraction process, reducing the overall extraction rate. In addition, the Al3+stripping rate is low and there is continuous accumulation of Al3+in the organic phase during the stripping process, affecting the extraction efficiency and even causing emulsification. The slope method and infrared detection were utilized to explore the formation of an extraction compound of Al3+and the extractant P204-P350 that entered the organic phase as AlCl[(HA)2]2P350(o).Keywords:Al3+;light rare earths;P204;P350;impurity

Separation and recovery of iron from vanadium extraction tailing slag by P204-P507 mixture collector flotation process

Yi-bo Wang,Jing-wei Li,Xiao-long Liu,Xin-fei Jiang,Yin-he Lin,Zhi Tian,Jun-jie Yin,Bing-qing Huang,Jia-xin Yang,Chen-xuan Wang,Zi-wang Wu,Shi-xing Ma,Lei Man,Cun-bo Bu,Da-ya Wang

Vanadium extraction tailing slag is difficult to be utilized on a large scale due to their complex mineral composition. A promising collector was proposed to separate iron and gypsum from the vanadium extraction tailing slag with mixed collector of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and Mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate by flotation process. The vanadium extraction tailing slag mainly consist of iron oxide, ilmenite, vanadium iron spinel, calcium sulfate and quartz. Under the conditions of pulp pH of 1, ball mill time of 1.5 h, collector ratio of 1:1, pulp concentration of 14.29 g/L, and collector dosage of 2.86 mL/L, content of TFe (total iron) in the vanadium extraction tailing slag increased from 27.5 % to 37.13 %. By seven times flotation processes, TFe content of flotation concentrate can increase to 43.27 % and the flotation tailing can be used as gypsum production. The interaction mechanism between (P204 + P507) collector and vanadium extraction tailing slag was analyzed by XRD, Zeta potential, FTIR and XPS. This method realizes the recovery of iron and gypsum from vanadium extraction tailing slag, and improves the resource utilization efficiency of solid waste residue.

A novel MWCNTs-P204/TBP membrane with dual-site extraction function for continuous selective separate neodymium by electrochemically switched ion membrane extraction

Xiaohan Xing,Can Wang,Xiao Du,Fengfeng Gao,Xiaogang Hao,Abuliti Abudula,Guoqing Guan

A novel carbon nanotube combining bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate/tributyl phosphate membrane (MWCNTs-P204/TBP membrane) with dual-site extraction function was obtained by constructing a dense P204/TBP liquid phase extraction layer in a 3D porous MWCNTs membrane and proposed a “chemical-electrochemical dual site extraction” mechanism that consists both the chemical extraction dominated by proton exchange and electrochemical extraction dominated by electrochemical complexation pathways. The membrane was applied with an electrochemically switched ion membrane extraction (ESIME) process to realize continuous selective extraction/stripping of Nd 3+ . Model calculation and DFT simulations indicate that the mass transfer rate of Nd 3+ in the feed phase is 7.45 times higher than that of Dy 3+ under the action of the electric field, and the chemical softness of P204 and Nd 3+ extraction complex 15.15 is higher than that of Dy 3+ 2.73, the coupling effect of cell voltage and pulse potential can effectively facilitate the selective extraction and stripping of Nd 3+ by MWCNTs-P204/TBP membrane. The Nd 3+ flux as high as 7.31 μmol·m −2 ·s −1 with a separation factor β Nd 3+ /Dy 3+ of 9.56 was achieved even after five times enrichments. It manifested that the ESIME system with MWCNs-P204/TBP membrane provides a scalable process for the continuous selective separation of Nd 3+ from waste permanent magnets.

Synergistic solvent extraction of nickel by 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime mixed with neodecanoic acid and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid: Stoichiometry and structure investigation

Qi Sun,Limei Yang,Songtao Huang,Zheng Xu,Yan Li,Wei Wang

Synergistic solvent extraction of nickel by 2-hydroxy-5-nonylacetophenone oxime (Mextral 84H, denoted as HL) mixed with organic acids (denoted as HA) containing neodecanoic acid (Versatic 10) and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) diluted in aliphatics was comparatively studied. The synergistic effects on nickel with Mextral 84H/Versatic 10 and Mextral 84H/P204 systems were investigated by extraction pH isotherm and equimolar method. The nickel-organic extractants species structure and stoichiometry were determined by slope analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry and ultraviolet and visible (UV-Vis) spectrometry. The results showed that synergistic effects on nickel with a negligible shift of 0.06 pH units in the Mextral 84H/Versatic 10 system and a significant shift of 0.79 pH units in the Mextral 84H/P204 system were observed compared with single Mextral 84H system. Versatic 10 has little effect on the nickel extraction. The square-planar complex with a formation of Ni L 2 NiL2 in the Mextral 84H/Versatic 10 system was proposed, the same as that in the single Mextral 84H system. P204 participates in the reaction between nickel and Mextral 84H, probably forming an octahedral complex with a formation of Ni ( H 2 A 2 L 2 ) Ni(H2A2L2) . The synergistic effect could result from this formation of more stable and hydrophobic nickel adducts, which promote the distribution ratio of nickel.

Microfluidic strategy for rapid and efficient extraction of scandium ions from red mud

Lang Feng,Wei Long,Bin Li,Tao Li,Zhihong Zhang,Xiaohua Wang,Huiping Li

Red mud is an alkaline solid waste generated during alumina production and harbors significant scandium (Sc) resources. Sc holds substantial scientific and economic value due to its critical applications in metallurgy, chemistry, and electronics. However, traditional methods for extracting Sc from red mud are hindered by challenges such as prolonged mixing times, high energy consumption, and susceptibility to emulsification, which severely limit industrial application efficiency. To address these issues, this study designed and developed a microfluidic extraction platform utilizing laminar flow, slug flow, and micro-droplet systems. It systematically investigated the separation process of Sc 3+ using di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204) as the extractant. The microfluidic chip significantly enhanced the rapid mass transfer of Sc 3+ between phases by providing a larger interface area, thereby accelerating the extraction kinetics. This characteristic enabled the extraction process to reach equilibrium more quickly while ensuring operational stability and reproducibility. Experimental results demonstrated that, compared to solvent extraction (with an extraction efficiency of 74.6 %), the laminar flow achieved the selectivity separation efficiency for Sc 3+ ranging from 94.1 % to 96.4 %, with the reaction time reduced to 7.14–10 min. The slug flow improved mass transfer efficiency by promoting internal circulation within the droplets, achieving an extraction efficiency of 86.9 % to 94.8 %. Meanwhile, the micro-droplet attained the highest mass transfer efficiency of 92.9 % to 97.4 % by leveraging the large specific surface area and internal flow characteristics of the droplets. Therefore, the laminar flow is highly suitable for continuous operation and the rapid and efficient separation of rare earth elements from bulk solid waste. Additionally, the performance of the slug flow and micro-droplet is significantly superior to traditional solvent extraction methods, making them particularly suitable for high-selectivity separation of rare earth ions and small-scale processing applications. This study not only provides a novel strategy for the efficient recovery of Sc resources from red mud but also promotes the application and development of microfluidic technology in wet metallurgical engineering.

Continuous and selective extraction of Cs+ using a t-BAMBP/P204/MWCNTs supported liquid membrane

Zhen Zeng,Fengfeng Gao,Yu Zhao,Xiaohan Xing,Can Wang,Xiao Du,Xiaogang Hao,Xiumin Li

A novel 4-tert-butyl-2-(α-methylbenzyl) phenol/bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate/ Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes (t-BAMBP/P204/MWCNTs) supported liquid membrane (SLM) was prepared via an in-situ impregnation method. The MWCNTs network effectively anchored the t-BAMBP/P204 synergistic extractants, enhancing membrane stability. Through proton exchange and coordination interactions, this membrane efficiently extracts Cs + in weakly alkaline environments. A systematic investigation was conducted into the effects of MWCNTs, t-BAMBP and P204 ratios, diluent ratio (kerosene: cyclohexane), pH value, and temperature on Cs + extraction performance. In this system, at equal concentrations (C Cs+, Rb+  = 200 ppm), the Cs + permeation flux reached 25.2 mmol/m 2 /h, and the Cs + /Rb + separation coefficient was 8.90. In selective permeation experiments conducted in a mixed solution containing equal concentrations of Cs + , Rb + , K + , Na + , and Li + , the separation factors for Cs + /Li + , Cs + /Na + , Cs + /K + , and Cs + /Rb + were 144.6, 45.75, 18.09, and 8.93, respectively. Furthermore, the t-BAMBP/P204/MWCNs SLM was applied to the extraction and separation of cesium from simulated lithium mica lithium-extraction tail liquor, and the system demonstrated excellent selectivity. The separation factors for Cs + /Li + , Cs + /Na + , Cs + /K + , Cs + /Rb + , Cs + /Mg 2+ , and Cs + /Ca 2+ reached 380.67, 571, 76.13, 16.79, 17.57, and 3.525, respectively. Following ten permeation experiments, both the Cs + permeation flux and the separation factors of Cs + /Rb + maintained high cycle stability. Through slope analysis and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, it was confirmed that Cs + coordinates with t-BAMBP and P204 to form compounds with the chemical formulae [(ROCs)·(ROH)], [(ACs)·(HA)], and [CsOR·ROH(HA)]. Additionally, Cs + was found to form complexes with the two extractants individually. DFT calculations indicated that the reaction process was predominantly governed by the formation of complexes between t-BAMBP dimers and Cs + . This study presents a promising new method for Cs + recovery based on membrane separation processes.

Comparative Study of Four Acidic Extractants as Modifiers in the TBP/FeCl3 Solvent Extraction System for Lithium and Magnesium Separation

Yifan Zhang,Xiao Geng,Huining Deng,Zhuojun Jiang,Benzheng Xia,Liangrong Yang,Zheng Li

The TBP/FeCl3 solvent extraction (SX) system exhibits a high selectivity of lithium over magnesium from magnesium-rich brines, but it suffers from the difficulty of lithium stripping. The addition of 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexy ester (P507) as a modifier to the TBP/FeCl3 system significantly enhances the stripping efficiency of the extraction system by controlling the Fe3+ coordination. However, the performance of other acidic extractants similar to P507 has not yet been investigated. In this work, we systematically compared the performance of the four most commonly used commercial acidic extractants, namely, P507, di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (P204), bis(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl) phosphinic acid (Cyanex 272), and neodecanoic acid (Versatic Acid 10) as modifiers in the TBP/FeCl3 system. It was found that the addition of P204, P507, or Cyanex 272 slightly suppressed the extraction of lithium but Versatic Acid 10 did not; the coextraction of magnesium followed the order P507 > P204 ≈ Cyanex 272 > Versatic Acid 10. Importantly, the ability of the modifiers to keep Fe3+ in the organic phase is correlated with their acidity, i.e., P204 > P507 > Cyanex 272 ≫ Versatic Acid 10. Overall, P204 and P507 exhibited comparable performance, and they both surpassed Cyanex 272 and Versatic Acid 10.

Separation and recovery of vanadium from leaching solution of calcium roasting vanadium slag by extraction with P204 extractant

Da-long Wang,Lin Zhang,Jing-wei Li,Chen Chen,Yin-he Lin,Zhi Yang,Da-ya Wang,Huan-jian Hou,Jian Chen,Tang-jie Zhou,Wen-ming Tang

In this study, an efficient method for recovery of vanadium (V) from leaching solution of calcium roasting vanadium slag by extraction with di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204) was proposed. The impact of initial pH value, P204 concentration, contact time, phase ratio (O/A) and temperature on vanadium recovery were analyzed. The effects of stripping agent, O/A, contact time and temperature on the V stripping were analyzed. The maximum V extraction rate was 99.74 % through three-stage extraction under the conditions: 50 % P204, O/A of 1:1, pH of 4.0, 8 min, 30℃. The three-stage maximum vanadium stripping rate was 98.38 % under the conditions of 2.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, 10 min, 30 ℃. The purity of the recovered V 2 O 5 was 99.59 % when the pH value was 2.0. The extraction mechanism of vanadium was confirmed as cation exchange mechanism by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy.

Enhanced hardness removal by polyamide thin-film composite nanofiltration membranes modified with a novel P204 based ionic liquid

Yingyao He,Jianqiang Wang,Jie Gao,Waifen Yong,Shenghua Zhou,Haibo Lin,Qiu Han,Fu Liu

Hard water softening by removing multivalent cations such as calcium (Ca 2+ ) and magnesium (Mg 2+ ) remain challenging for nanofiltration (NF) membranes due to the trade-off between membrane permeability and selectivity. In this study, chelation ionic liquid ([NH 4 ] [P204]) was synthesized to modify the polyamide selective layer of thin film composite (TFC) NF membranes. This modification enhanced ion rejection of membranes through synergistic effects of size sieving and electrostatic interactions without much compromising the water flux. The optimal membrane NF-ILs-2.0 wt% achieved rejection rates of 95.1 % and 92.5 % for Mg 2+ and Ca 2+ , respectively, alongside a stable water flux of 36.0 LMH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations revealed the effectiveness of the membranes in removal hardness and strong coordination interactions between [NH 4 ] [P204] and the cations. The novel ionic liquid functions as a promising modifier for-developing advanced NF membranes with enhanced simplicity, efficiency and durability for water treatments.

Selective separation of Fe and Ga from Al-rich HNO3 leach liquor using sequential solvent extraction

Shuyang Shi,Chen Yang,Baozhong Ma,Hui Yang,Zhihe Cao,Yubo Liu,Yongqiang Chen,Chengyan Wang

Ga exhibits enrichment in coal-based solid waste, establishing it as a promising alternative source for Ga recovery. The HNO 3 pressure leaching process effectively achieves simultaneous leaching of Al and Ga while retaining most of the Fe in the residue. However, separating Ga from acidic solutions containing Fe and Al remains a persistent challenge in hydrometallurgy due to their similar physicochemical properties. Herein, a simplified and effective two-stage sequential solvent extraction process using acid phosphorus extractants (P507 and P204) for selective Ga recovery was proposed. Under optimized conditions, P507 removed 97.2 % of Fe from coal gangue HNO 3 leach liquor with limited co-extraction of Ga (10.1 %) and Al (5.7 %). Subsequent P204 extraction recovered 99.2 % Ga with only 9.1 % Al co-extraction from the Fe raffinate. Stripping with 2 mol·L –1 H 2 SO 4 yielded 88.0 % Ga recovery, with the extractants showing excellent regeneration and cycling performance. Mechanistic studies including FT-IR, UV-Vis, ESI-MS, and stoichiometric analysis confirmed coordination through both P = O and P–O–H groups, forming Fe(HA)A 3 and Ga(HL)L 3 complexes (A = P507; L = P204 ligands), respectively. This study presents a highly efficient approach for the separation of Fe/Ga/Al and Ga recovery from HNO 3 leach liquor, featuring exceptionally low acid depletion.

Preparation of Emulsion Hydrogels Encapsulating P204 by the Pickering Emulsion Templates for the Adsorption of Ce(III) in Aqueous Solutions

Jinbo Feng,Yaodong Liang,Yongjun He

This study reports a novel adsorbent prepared via a Pickering emulsion-template method for the efficient adsorption of Ce(III) from aqueous solutions. Water-in-oil Pickering emulsions were first stabilized by commercial nano-SiO2, using an aqueous sodium alginate solution as the dispersed phase and kerosene-diluted di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (P204) as the continuous phase. The emulsion droplets were then gelled in a Ca 2 + solution to form stable Pickering emulsion hydrogel beads (PEHG), thereby encapsulating the P204-containing organic phase within a calcium alginate matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the successful encapsulation and the structural integrity of the PEHG. Batch adsorption experiments demonstrated that the adsorption kinetics followed a pseudo-second-order model, indicative of chemisorption, while the equilibrium data were best described by the Redlich-Peterson isotherm, suggesting a complex adsorption mechanism involving both monolayer and multilayer interactions. Remarkably, the PEHG retained a Ce(III) removal efficiency above 99% over five consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, with no observable structural degradation or leakage of the encapsulated phase. This strategy of encapsulating the functional organic phase (P204) within a hydrogel matrix not only enhances its utilization efficiency but also effectively prevents its leakage into the aqueous environment, offering a promising and sustainable approach for rare earth element recovery.
