The study on extraction behavior of [N1888][P507] and TRPO for heavy rare earths

Hongxiang Xu,Li Zhang,Zengrui Pang,Zhenlei Wang,Weichao Li,Jiushuai Deng

Ionic liquids were extensively used in many extraction and separation processes for metal ions because of excellent dissolving and selecting ability. The COSMO-RS method was applied for selecting suitable ionic liquid from 80 kinds of ionic liquids. Hydrophilicity, solvent solubility, distribution ratio were considered as important factors for selecting suitable ionic liquids. [N1888][P507] was suitable ionic liquid for extracting and separating heavy rare earths. A solvent extraction system containing ionic liquid [N1888][P507] and molecular extractant TRPO to separate heavy rare earths was studied. The results showed that the mixture of the [N1888][P507] and TRPO contributed to high extractabilities and selectivities of heavy rare earths. The abilities to form third phase and product emulsification phenomenon decreased with the concentration ratio of TRPO and [N1888][P507] increasing. The extraction mechanism of HREEs was deduced as ion association. The quantitative stripping of HREEs from loaded organic phase could be achieved with deionized water and low concentration of hydrochloric acid. The article showed that the mixture of [N1888][P507] and TRPO might be an effective and environmentally friendly extractant for extraction and separation of heavy rare earths.

Separation of molybdenum and tungsten from iron in hydrochloric-phosphoric acid solutions using solvent extraction with TBP and P507

Luqi Zeng,Tianzu Yang,Xintao Yi,Ping Chen,Jiaxun Liu,Guangsheng Huo

A mixture of TBP and P507 was proposed for the separation of molybdenum (Mo) and tungsten (W) from iron (Fe) in a hydrochloric-phosphoric acid (HCl-H 3 PO 4 ) solution that was obtained from the hydrochloric acid preleaching of low-grade scheelite . Various extractants with TBP were investigated, and P507 showed synergistic effects on Mo and W extraction and a strong antagonistic effect on Fe extraction. Then, the effects of various conditions on the separation of Mo and W from Fe with the mixture of TBP and P507 were investigated. Using 24% ( v /v) TBP, 16% (v/v) P507 and 60% (v/v) kerosene as extractants, 90% Mo and 88% W were extracted with only 8% Fe co-extraction, and the separation factors of Mo/Fe and W/Fe were 153 and 118, respectively, through one-stage extraction under the following conditions: 1.7 mol/L H + , A/O ratio of 3:1, contact time of 10 min, and temperature of 15 °C. After two-stage batch continuous extraction, 99% Mo, 94% W and 10% Fe were extracted. By washing with 2 mol/L hydrochloric acid, most of the Fe and other impurities were removed with negligible losses of Mo and W. Upon stripping with 5 mol/L ammonia at a 1:1 organic-to-aqueous phase ratio, almost 100% of the Mo and W were recovered from the washed organic phase. Other impurities, such as P, Si, Ca, Al, and Mn, minimally affected the extraction of Mo and W.

Effective separation of neodymium and lanthanum by single-module hollow fiber supported liquid membrane with P507 as extractant

Yucheng Liu,Qian Xu,Fuping Li,Fan Yu,Zijian Yu,Kaibo Hu,Hao Chen,Xuewei Li,Chonggang Wang,Dong Han Seo,Ming Xie,Sotto Arcadio,Jiuyang Lin,Youming Yang,Yinhua Wan

Rare earth elements (REEs) are commonly categorized into light (LREEs), medium (MREEs), and heavy (HREEs) groups. Separation between LREEs and MREEs or MREEs is relatively straightforward. However, isolating LREEs themselves is particularly challenging because of their similar ionic radii and identical charges. Traditional separation processes are hindered by drawbacks including low recovery rates for dilute REEs, poor selectivity, complex protocols, and environmental pollution. Consequently, developing a cleaner and more efficient method for LREEs separation is imperative. In this study, we employed a single-module hollow fiber supported liquid membrane (HFSLM) system with 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) as an extractant to concurrently extract and strip La 3+ and Nd 3+ from the mixed LREEs containing solutions. We also investigated the impact of flow rate, stripping solution acidity, feed solution pH, P507 concentration, Nd 3+ concentration of feed solution, and the volume ratio between the feed and stripping solutions influence the extraction and stripping of LREEs, as well as the molar fractions of La 3+ and Nd 3+ in the solutions. Under optimal condition, the molar fraction of La 3+ was 99.0% in the feed solution, whereas the molar fraction of Nd 3+ reached 91.6% in the stripping solution. Furthermore, the experimental results demonstrated a consistent preference of P507-HFSLM system for extracting Nd 3+ over La 3+ , and the underlying mechanism was thoroughly investigated. In summary, this study offers comprehensive insights and technical approaches for selective separation and purification of LREEs.

Polymer Inclusion Membranes with P507-TBP Carriers for Lithium Extraction from Brines

Xianjie Zeng,Li Xu,Tao Deng,Chengyi Zhang,Wei Xu,Wen Zhang

The separation of lithium and magnesium from salt-lake brines with high Mg2+/Li+ratios is a main challenge for lithium extraction. In this work, novel polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) were developed by incorporating 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono 2-ethylhexyl (P507) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) as the carriers into cellulose triacetate (CTA) polymers. The Li+could be stripped from the P507-TBP extracting carriers using pure water eluents without adding concentrated hydrochloric acid, which can help decrease carriers’ leakage risk from membrane matrixes and keep the stability of PIMs. The morphology, composition, and wettability of P507-TBP-based PIMs were characterized systematically, and the carrier content in the PIM was also optimized. In the transport experiment with the feed of 0.1 mol/L LiCl and 4.0 mol/L MgCl2, the CTA/P507-TBP60% membrane exhibits a Li+permeability of 4.76 × 10−3mol·m−2·h−1and a Li/Mg separation ratio of 10.2. After recycling seven times, the selectivity of the PIM is well-retained (>10), and the permeability of Li+decreases slightly (less than 15%). With a decent selectivity and excellent stability, PIMs containing P507-TBP carriers show great potential for sustainable and efficient lithium recovery from brines with high Mg/Li ratios.

Solvent extraction of Ce(III) and Pr(III) with P507 using SiC foam as a static mixer

Ye Zhang,Yong Gao,Peng Wang,Duo Na,Zhenming Yang,Jinsong Zhang

Extraction reactor is a major research area of interest within the field of rare earths extraction and separation. SiC foam offers excellent material characteristics as well as three-dimensional (3-D) reticulated structure; however, very little research has been carried out on its application in extraction reactor so far. In this work, a static mixer reactor based on SiC foam was designed and demonstrated to extract and separate Ce(III) and Pr(III) from nitric acid media by using 2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (P507) as extractant. The structure–performance relationship between SiC foam and extraction performance was studied by experiment combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. The experiment data are in good agreement with the simulation results. Contrast experiment by using a Kenics mixer was carried out, and SiC foam shows better extraction and mass transfer performance. Using the optimal structural SiC foam (pore size D  = 2.3 mm, open porosity ε  = 85%, foam length L  = 80 mm), high extraction efficiency η (Pr(III): 94.6%, Ce(III): 88.5%) and separation factor β (2.27) between Ce(III) and Pr(III) is achieved at a high total throughput of 200 mL/min. Besides, overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient K L a of Pr(III) and Ce(III) are 0.519 and 0.378 s −1  at the residence time τ of 3.6 s, respectively, which reach the high level of microchannel reactors and are better than conventional extractors and other static mixers. SiC foam is found to be applicable as a static mixer for efficient and high-throughput extraction and separation of rare earths.

Efficient removal of Al(III) and P507 from high concentration MgCl2 solution based on in-situ reaction strategy

Qiang WANG,Meng WANG,Zong-yu FENG,Yong-qi ZHANG,Xiao-wei HUANG,Xiang-xin XUE

For a highly efficient recycling of a wastewater containing a high concentration of MgCl 2 , Al(III) and P507 were scheduled to be removed in advance. In this study, the in-situ removal of Al(III) and P507 from a high concentration MgCl 2 solution at different pH values and Al/P molar ratios was investigated. The results showed that P507 formed organic complexes of Al x (OH) z + y -P507 at pH of 2.0−4.0. At pH of 4.0−5.0, Al(III) precipitated and transferred into Al(OH) 3 with a flocculent amorphous morphology. Active sites on the Al(OH) 3 surface enhanced the removal efficiency of P507. At pH of 6.0−6.5, Al(III) and Mg(II) formed layered crystalline Al(OH) 3 and MgAl 2 (OH) 8 with small pore channels and fewer active sites, resulting in a reduced removal efficiency of P507. When the Al/P molar ratio exceeded 13 and the pH was between 4.0 and 5.0, the removal rates of both Al(III) and P507 were higher than 98%, while the concentration loss of Mg(II) was only 0.2%−0.9%.

Study on Cu(II) extraction process optimization and mechanism from acidic leaching solution using the deep eutectic solvent P507/Menthol

Jue Chen,Hexiang Zhong,Shan Zhu

In this study, the selectivity of a hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES) comprising 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (P507) and L-menthol (Men) was assessed for the extraction and separation of Cu(II), Co(II), and Ni(II) from acidic leaching solutions, aiming to make the HDES system more consummate and provide a novel approach for metal extraction using HDES. The results indicated that under the conditions of a 2:1 M ratio of P507 to Men, an extraction temperature of 40℃, an extraction time of 40 min, an oil-water ratio(O/W, v/v) of 1, and a pH value of 4, the three-stage cross-flow extraction efficiency of the HDES for Cu(II) was over 99 %. Furthermore, successful selective separation of Cu(II), Ni(II), and Co(II) was demonstrated by separation coefficients β Cu/Ni of 2150 and β Cu/Co of 305. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) indicated that the formation of an HDES molecule involved the combination of two molecules of P507 and one molecule of Men through hydrogen bonding interactions. Moreover, compared to other cupric complex configurations, the tetrahedral cupric complex, synthesized using two molecules of P507 and two molecules of menthol with Cu(II), exhibited a lower single-point energy and a higher ΔE(LUMO-HOMO), demonstrating greater stability.

Recovery of gallium from sulfuric acid leach liquor of coal fly ash by stepwise separation using P507 and Cyanex 272

Zesen Zhao,Li Cui,Yanxia Guo,Huiquan Li,Fangqin Cheng

For the ever-growing demand of gallium (Ga) resources in electronic applications, the recovery of Ga from the mining residues or waste has received considerable interest. The present paper is focused on the selective recovery of Ga from the sulfuric acid leach liquor of coal fly ash (CFA) by stepwise separation using acidic extractant. The results show that Ga(III) can be effectively separated by controlling the equilibrium pH values and meanwhile employing appropriate extractant based on the different ionic potential and electronic configuration of metal ions. At equilibrium pH ≤ 0.8, the impurities Ti(IV) and Fe(III) in the liquor can be preferably removed by a two-stage cross current extraction with 1 mol/L P507. Then Ga(III) can be selectively separated against Al(III) using 0.5 mol/L Cyanex 272 at equilibrium pH of 2.4–2.6. The separation factors of Fe/Ga, Fe/Al and Ga/Al can reach 145, 133 and 40, respectively. The extraction mechanism of Ga(III) as well as the Ga(III) complexes with Cyanex 272 were investigated using slope analysis and spectroscopic methods including FT-IR, NMR and ESI-MS, indicating that the extraction of Ga(III) with Cyanex 272 follows an ion exchange mechanism. The Ga(III) complexes with Cyanex 272 (H 2 L 2 ) contains three coordination compounds, GaL 3 , Ga(HL)L 3 and Ga(HL) 3 L 3 . Both the P-O and P = O groups of Cyanex 272 play the roles in the coordination reaction of Ga(III). The study provides a feasible way for the selective recovery of Ga from coal fly ash.

Separation and recovery of iron from vanadium extraction tailing slag by P204-P507 mixture collector flotation process

Yi-bo Wang,Jing-wei Li,Xiao-long Liu,Xin-fei Jiang,Yin-he Lin,Zhi Tian,Jun-jie Yin,Bing-qing Huang,Jia-xin Yang,Chen-xuan Wang,Zi-wang Wu,Shi-xing Ma,Lei Man,Cun-bo Bu,Da-ya Wang

Vanadium extraction tailing slag is difficult to be utilized on a large scale due to their complex mineral composition. A promising collector was proposed to separate iron and gypsum from the vanadium extraction tailing slag with mixed collector of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate and Mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate by flotation process. The vanadium extraction tailing slag mainly consist of iron oxide, ilmenite, vanadium iron spinel, calcium sulfate and quartz. Under the conditions of pulp pH of 1, ball mill time of 1.5 h, collector ratio of 1:1, pulp concentration of 14.29 g/L, and collector dosage of 2.86 mL/L, content of TFe (total iron) in the vanadium extraction tailing slag increased from 27.5 % to 37.13 %. By seven times flotation processes, TFe content of flotation concentrate can increase to 43.27 % and the flotation tailing can be used as gypsum production. The interaction mechanism between (P204 + P507) collector and vanadium extraction tailing slag was analyzed by XRD, Zeta potential, FTIR and XPS. This method realizes the recovery of iron and gypsum from vanadium extraction tailing slag, and improves the resource utilization efficiency of solid waste residue.

Polymer microcapsules containing TBP–P507 prepared through in situ cross-linking for highly stable and selective extraction of Li+ from high-Mg2+/Li+-ratio brines

Chao Zhang,Tian Xie,Han Qu,Guofei Li,Zhongyu Zhao,Wanji Zhou,Shiai Xu,Zheng Li

The efficient separation and extraction of Li + from salt lake brines with a high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio remains challenging. Herein, poly(vinyl alcohol-co-ethylene) microcapsules encapsulating tributyl phosphate (TBP) and mono-2-ethylhexyl 2-ethylhexyl phosphate (P507) as carriers were successfully fabricated via one-step phase inversion followed by in situ cross-linking with boric acid. Correspondingly, the obtnined microcapsules possess a fine three-dimensional cross-linked network structure, which can effectively stabilize the extractant carriers and significantly enhance the encapsulation stability. These microcapsules were employed for the stable and selective extraction of Li + from high-Mg 2+ /Li + -ratio brines. The surface morphology, composition, structure, and adsorption characteristics of the TBP–P507 microcapsules were thoroughly investigated. The microcapsules comprising 30 wt% (m/m) polymer matrix and 70 wt% (m/m) TBP–P507 as the extractant (denoted as TBP–P507/P-3) exhibited the highest separation efficiency for Li + and Mg 2+ . The separation factor of Li + over Mg 2+ was up to 427, and the equilibrium adsorption capacity of the TBP–P507/P-3 microcapsules for Li + reached 0.83 mg/g in synthetic brine with a low Li + concentration and a high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio. These results illustrated that Li + could be separated with high selectivity over Mg 2+ . Adsorption kinetics and isotherms investigations indicated that Li + adsorption by TBP–P507/P-3 conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and was consistent with the Langmuir–Freundlich model, with the mechanism classified as chemisorption. Accordingly, the maximum amount of Li + adsorbed by the TBP–P507/P-3 microcapsules calculated using the Langmuir–Freundlich model was 4.4 mg/g. After 10 adsorption–elution cycles with pure water as the eluent, 96 % of the maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity was retained. The results clearly illustrate the construction of a finely-tuned three-dimensional cross-linked network structure is pivotal to enhancing stability of the microcapsules, efficiently decreasing the risk of carrier leakage from the involved polymer matrixes. Overall, this research presents a valuable microcapsule technology for separating and extracting Li + from high-Mg 2+ /Li + -ratio salt lake brines.

Establishing carbon dots assisted high speed countercurrent chromatography and its application for efficient separation of rare earth element ions

Wenting Li,Wenjuan Wang,Yun Wei

Rare earth elements with unique magnetic properties and optical properties, known as the ‘industrial vitamin’, has a very high commercial value. As a secondary resource of rare earth elements, low-concentration solution includes mixed rare earth ions, which need to realize efficient separation and recovery urgently. High speed countercurrent chromatography is suitable for the separation and purification of rare earth element ions due to its advantages of large loading, good tolerance to samples, and simple pretreatment. In this study, a carbon dots assisted high speed countercurrent chromatography method was designed and established, the carbon dots were applied to the mobile phase of high speed countercurrent chromatography for the first time. The low concentration of REEs solution was enriched, and the effective separation of La (III), Ce (III), Gd (III) and Er (III) was successfully achieved. The complete separation of La (III), Ce (III), Gd (III) and Er (III) was achieved with a solvent system of 0.05 mol L −1 P507 (PE), 0.05 mol L −1 HNO 3 , and 0.1 mol L −1 CDs2 carbon dots (1:1:0.01, v/v/v), the upper phase as stationary phase, the lower phase as mobile phase. Density functional theory result showed that the binding energy of REEs (III)-CDs2 was larger than that of REEs (III)-P507, so the affinity of CDs2 to REEs (III) was stronger than that of P507. Therefore, with the addition of CDs2, the ability of mobile phase to elute REEs from the stationary phase was enhanced, and the separation effect was improved.

Enhanced molybdenum extraction and purification from acidic lixivium using organophosphorus extractants

Ruizhuo Liu,Jian Cao,Zhongwei Zhao,Yongli Li

Solvent extraction with organophosphorus extractants has potential as a low-cost method for efficient Mo recovery for acidic leaching solutions. However, improved selectivity is required to obtain high-purity Mo products. In this study, various acidic organophosphorus extractants were compared, and 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid mono-(2-ethylhexyl) ester (P507) was found to be optimal for efficient Mo extraction and Fe separation from acidic leaching solutions. Under the optimized conditions (40 vol% P507, 3:1 organic/aqueous, 20 °C, 5 min), the Mo and Fe extraction efficiencies reached 98.1 % and 35.2 %, respectively, with a separation factor of 90.1. The Mo/Fe separation efficiency was further improved using a two-stage countercurrent extraction method. The Mo extraction efficiency was attributed to coordination bonds (P = O → Mo) formed between Mo(VI) oxycations and P507 dimers, as well as covalent bonds (P O Mo) formed by substituting the hydrogen ions in P507. Increasing the H 2 SO 4 concentration in the leaching solution gradually transformed MoO 2 2+ into Mo 2 O 5 2+ dimers, which formed MoO 2 (HA 2 ) 2 and Mo 2 O 5 (HA 2 ) 2 metal complexes during the extraction process. HCl scrubbing of the loaded organic phase effectively removed Fe. For subsequent ammonia stripping of the HCl-scrubbed organic phase, the optimal ammonia concentration was 1.25 mol/L. Further increasing the ammonia concentration promoted the saponification reaction of ammonia with P507, thereby reducing the Mo stripping efficiency. In summary, using multistage countercurrent extraction, increasing the H 2 SO 4 concentration in the leaching solution, and scrubbing the loaded organic phase with HCl facilitate efficient Mo/Fe separation, providing a feasible approach for the preparation of high-purity ammonium molybdate with broad application prospects.
