CNT-Br/PEDOT:PSS/PAAS three-network composite conductive hydrogel for human motion monitoring

Zhonghua Zhao,Xiang Yuan,Yicheng Huang,Jikui Wang

Conductive hydrogels are promising flexible conductors for human motion monitoring. However, this kind of wearable strain sensor has often shown weak mechanical properties. To overcome the inherent mechanical weakness and improve the electrical conductivity, CNT-Br/PEDOT:PSS/PAAS triple-network penetrating conductive hydrogels (CBP) are fabricated. The n-butylimidazolium bromide salt-functionalized MWCNTs (CNT-Br) as conductive fillers form a three-dimensional conductive path through the crosslinking agent XR-100, penetrating with the skeleton of crosslinking sodium polyacrylate. The conductive liquid PEDOT:PSS is further evenly dispersed in the penetrating double network to further enhance the electrical conductivity of the hydrogels. CNT-Br without obvious agglomeration significantly improved the thermal stability and mechanical properties of CBP. Moreover, CNT-Br enabled the PEDOT:PSS components to be more evenly dispersed in the PAAS matrix. Due to the good conductive paths inside the hydrogels, the maximum electrical conductivity (CBP10) increases to 10.35 mS cm−1, which is 415% higher than that of pure P1. Our work provides a method to prepare conductive hydrogels with high electrical conductivity and excellent mechanical properties, which can be used for human joint motion detection.

Palladium nanoparticles stabilized by chitosan/PAAS nanofibers: A highly stable catalyst for Heck reaction

Yijun Du,Sailong Wei,Minchao Tang,Miaoting Ye,Hongyu Tao,Chenze Qi,Linjun Shao

Palladium chloride doped chitosan composite nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning with sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) as the co-spinning agent. The composite nanofibers are subsequently treated at elevated temperature to improve their solvent resistance. The Pd (II) cations inside the composite nanofibers were reduced into uniform palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) with mean diameter of ~4.93 nm. These Pd NPs inside the chitosan composite nanofibers exhibited excellent catalytic activity for Heck reactions of aromatic iodides with alkenes with yields over 85%. Moreover, due to the fibrous structure, this novel fibrous palladium catalyst could be readily recovered by simple filtration and reused for 18 times without loss of initial catalytic activity. It was found that the reactants could readily diffuse from the reaction solution to the active Pd NPs inside the nanofibers and the products could departure from composite fibers into the reaction solution, while the Pd NPs were tightly restricted inside the chitosan composite nanofibers.

From macroscopic performance to molecular mechanisms: Multi-scale insights into enhanced impermeability of EMS/PAAS composites

Chengjia Dan,Yue Wang,Daikuan Huang,Yang Cao,Dabin Zhang

Leakages of electrolytic manganese slag (EMS) disposal sites pose a significant threat to soil and groundwater, necessitating effective in situ remediation technologies. This study presents a multi-scale analysis to elucidate the enhanced impermeability mechanism of EMS composite modified by sodium polyacrylate (PAAS). By integrating macroscopic performance testing (compressive strength, permeability, corrosion resistance, and pollutant leaching), molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and advanced spectroscopic/microscopic techniques (FTIR, XPS, and EDS mapping), we establish a direct link between macroscopic properties and underlying molecular-level interactions. Results demonstrate that an optimal PAAS/EMS mass ratio of 0.2 significantly enhances compressive strength (12.3-fold increase), reaching 2.78 MPa, and reduces the permeability coefficient to 1.318 × 10 −8 cm/s, with leachate concentrations meeting relevant water quality standards. This performance improvement stems from a synergistic multi-scale effect: macroscopically, well-dispersed PAAS forms a crosslinked network, filling structural defects within the EMR matrix and encapsulating the CaSO 4 ·2 H 2 O hard phase; at the molecular level, MD simulations reveal that PAAS chains undergo ion exchange (Na + with Mn 2+ ) and chelation (between -COO - and Mn 2+ ), forming a multi-crosslinked polymer network that densifies the microstructure and effectively impedes contaminant migration. FTIR and XPS analyses corroborate these molecular interactions, confirming that the enhanced impermeability arises from the synergistic effects of polymerization, ion exchange, and chelation. This study provides a new approach for controlling environmental risks associated with EMS, demonstrating the efficacy of multi-scale analysis in optimizing material performance.

Enhancing flotation separation of chalcopyrite and magnesium silicate minerals by surface synergism between PAAS and GA

Chen Zhiqiang,Wang Yanhong,Luo Liqun,Peng Tiefeng,Guo Feng,Zheng Mingyu

Separation effects of sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) and gum Arabic (GA) on flotation of chalcopyrite and magnesium silicate minerals using potassium butyl xanthate (PBX) as collector were investigated by micro-flotation experiments, zeta potential, Infrared spectral (IR), SEM–EDS, XPS analysis and copper sulphide ore beneficiation test. The micro-flotation experiments and zeta potential measurements showed that combined depressant consisting of PAAS and GA could efficiently reduce the recoveries of mixed minerals of serpentine and talc more than 25%, while that of chalcopyrite remained above 70% at pH 9.2. Infrared spectral (IR), SEM–EDS and XPS analysis showed that PAAS chemically reacted with Mg on the surface of serpentine, while GA adsorbed on talc surface mainly via physical interaction and hydrogen bond may also play a role. Surface synergism between PAAS and GA was investigated by turbidity test and its depression mechanism was proposed. The technology feasibility of using PAAS and GA to improve the copper sulphide ore flotation performance was verified through artificial mixed ore flotation and laboratory closed-flotation operation.

Multi-scale synergistically optimized PNIPAM-co-PAAS/non-woven fabric composite hydrogels for efficient atmospheric water harvesting

Huanxin Huang,Conli Chen,Pihui Pi,Xiufang Wen,Shouping Xu

Atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) is a sustainable solution to freshwater scarcity, yet balancing sorption capacity, energy efficiency, and stability remains challenging. Herein, we developed a multi-scale synergistically optimized composite sorbent (NW-NA@PDA-Cl) by integrating a poly (N-isopropylacrylamide)- co -poly (sodium acrylate) (PNIPAM- co -PAAS) copolymer network onto a non-woven (NW) fabric scaffold. Hierarchical diffusion channels were constructed via freeze-drying to accelerate mass transfer, while a polydopamine (PDA) coating facilitated molecular-level anchoring of lithium chloride (LiCl) through coordination and electrostatic interactions, effectively suppressing salt leakage. NW-NA@PDA-Cl achieved exceptional sorption capacities of 1.26 and 3.11 g g - 1 at 30% and 90% relative humidity (RH), respectively. Benefiting from the thermoresponsive restructuring of the hydrogen-bonding network, the material exhibited rapid desorption kinetics (78.6% release within 20 min at 60 °C) and a significantly reduced evaporation enthalpy (1536.5 J g - 1 ). Under 1.0 sun, photothermal effects drove surface temperatures to 65 °C, enabling efficient passive water recovery. Field tests demonstrated a daily yield of 1.27 g g - 1 day - 1 with drinking-standard water quality. This multi-scale design strategy provides a promising pathway for developing high-performance, energy-efficient, and stable AWH systems.

Sustainable Hierarchical-Pored PAAS–PNIPAAm Hydrogel with Core–Shell Structure Tailored for Highly Efficient Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Zhibin Zhang,Yajun Wang,Zheng Li,Hiroshi Fu,Jianying Huang,Zhiwei Xu,Yuekun Lai,Xiaoming Qian,Songnan Zhang

As an effective way to obtain freshwater resources, atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) technology has been a wide concern of researchers. Therefore, hydrogels gradually become key materials for atmospheric water harvesters due to their high specific surface area and three-dimensional porous structure. Here, we construct a core–shell hydrogel-based atmospheric water harvesting material consisting of a shell sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) hydrogel with an open pore structure and a core thermosensitive poly N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAAm) hydrogel with a large pore size. Theoretically, the mutual synergistic hygroscopic effect between the core layer and the shell layer accelerates the capture, transport, and storage of moisture to achieve continuous and high-capacity moisture adsorption. Simultaneously, the integration of polydopamine (PDA) with the hydrogel realizes solar-driven photothermal evaporation. Therefore, the prepared core–shell hydrogel material possesses great advantages in water adsorption capacity and water desorption capacity with an adsorption of 2.76 g g–1 (90% RH) and a desorption of 1.42 kg m–2 h–1. Additionally, the core–shell structure hydrogel collects 1.31 g g–1 day–1 of fresh water in outdoor experiments, which verifies that this core–shell hydrogel with integrated photothermal properties can capture moisture in a wide range of humidity without any external energy consumption, can further sustainably obtain fresh water in remote water-shortage areas.

A water-soluble PAAs sizing agent for enhancing interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide composites (CF/PPS)

Ruyi Fan,Tianwen Yan,Jiayu Su,Hui Zhao,Liusheng Zha,Jianfeng Zhou,Shu Zhu

Due to low activity and poor wettability of carbon fiber (CF), the interaction between CF and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) matrix is weak, which decreases the mechanical properties of CF reinforced PPS (CF/PPS) composites. In this article, the interfacial adhesion of CF/PPS composites was strengthened by using a water-soluble poly (amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAs) as sizing agent. This PAAs-based sizing agent had good compatibility with PPS and formed hydrogen bonds with CF activated by Meldrum’s acid. Significantly, the PAAs sizing agent can be soluble in water (up to 20 wt % high solid content) without organic solvents and surfactants, which shows huge potential in industrial applications. Experimental results demonstrated that the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strengths, and moduli of modified CF/PPS composites increased by 19.5%, 24.9%, and 10.1%, respectively. According to the SEM images on fractured surfaces of composites, fiber and PPS resin were tightly packed, and the failure mechanism was interface deformation or resin breakage.

Innovative spherical hydrogel architecture for efficient solar-driven desalination: A waste-to-resource approach

Li Yang,Size Zheng,Mingming Zheng,Lihong Zhou,Xi Rao,Yinhao Liao,Xiaoke Li

This study presents an innovative spherical hydrogel architecture designed for efficient solar-driven interfacial evaporation, leveraging a waste-to-resource approach by recycling sodium polyacrylate (PAAS) from discarded diapers. The developed PAAS/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite hydrogel (PPSH) integrates recycled PAAS with PVA and Chinese ink to form a hierarchical porous structure that enhances water transport and photothermal conversion efficiency. The spherical design of PPSH significantly increases the steam dissipation area, reduces heat loss, and improves salt resistance, achieving an evaporation rate of 3.18 kg/(m 2 ·h) under one sun illumination. The hydrogel demonstrates exceptional desalination performance, reducing total dissolved solids (TDS) by 2–4 orders of magnitude in seawater with varying salinities (up to 250 ‰) and maintaining stable operation over extended periods. Additionally, PPSH exhibits high versatility in treating domestic wastewater across a broad pH range (2–13), meeting the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standards. Outdoor field tests further validate the practical applicability of PPSH, with a daily water production rate of 22.87 kg/m 2 under natural sunlight. This work not only addresses freshwater scarcity through sustainable waste utilization but also provides critical insights into the structural design of scalable solar desalination technologies, offering a promising solution for decentralized water purification.
