The photocatalytic degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX), sulfadiazine (SDZ) and sulfamethazine (SMT) by Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC under solar light irradiation was studied. The results exhibited that Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC composite prepared by two-stage calcination method contained of rutile and anatase mixed crystal phases, and it had visible light response capability. In addition, Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC had a certain adsorption capacity for SMX, SDZ and SMT, and its saturated adsorption mass was 30.88, 11.28 and 26.24 mg/g, respectively. Compared to photolysis and adsorption process, the photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of the three sulfonamides were significantly improved, and more than 99 % of photocatalytic degradation efficiency was achieved. The EPR measurements showed that both hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) were produced in the photocatalytic process. However, trapping experiments confirmed that photo-generated hole (h + ) played a lead role in the photocatalytic degradation of SMX. Contrarily, the ·O 2 - was the main oxidative species for SDZ and SMT degradation. Furthermore, the effects of initial pH of solution, sodium bicarbonate, humic acid and natural water (lake and river water) on the photocatalytic degradation were investigated. The photocatalytic degradation pathways of Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC for sulfonamides were discussed. There were differences degradation pathways of the SDZ, SMT and SMX by Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC mainly reflected in: Hydroxylation of benzene ring, extrusion of SO 2 . While, similar pathways existed in the process of sulfanilamide degradation, such as the breaking of S N bond and the cracking of N-containing benzene ring.

A three-dimensional particle electrode loaded with α-Fe2O3 on powdered activated carbon (PAC) (α-Fe2O3/PAC) was synthesized by the microwave method for removing ammonium nitrogen from wastewater in a three-dimensional electrode system. The α-Fe2O3/PAC electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The effect of the added α-Fe2O3/PAC on the removal of ammonium nitrogen from simulated wastewater was studied by changing the cell voltage, particle dosage, and particle electrode synthesis conditions. Simulated experiments were also carried out on different pollutants under the best experimental conditions and the actual domestic sewage was tested. The results show that the optimal synthesis conditions of the particle electrode are as follows: the ratio of PAC to anhydrous FeCl3 is 1 : 2, and the microwave power is 1000 W for 60 s. After 20 min of electrolysis at 20 V, the ammonium nitrogen removal rate can reach 95.30%.

2,2′,4,4′-Tretrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) is known as a typical polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) due to its high environmental abundance, ecological toxicity, and bioaccumulation. In this study, the influences of three typical surfactants (CTAB, SDS, and TX-100) on BDE47 solubilization and degradation by the polyanionic cellulose–stabilized Pd/Fe (PAC-Pd/Fe) nanoparticles were investigated. The results showed that BDE47 solubilities increased linearly when surfactant concentrations were above their critical micelle concentrations (CMCs), and the solubilization capacities of surfactants for BDE47 followed the order of TX-100 > CTAB > SDS. The appropriate dosages of surfactants were favorable for BDE47 degradation due to enhancing solubilization and accelerating mass transfer, while excessive surfactants inhibited BDE47 degradation due to excessive and thicker micelles formed, but still higher than no surfactant. The influences of various factors (PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticle dosage, solution pH, and temperature) on BDE47 degradation in TX-100 solution were also tested. The results showed that BDE47 degradation followed the pseudo first-order kinetics model. The degradation rates of BDE47 increased as PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticle dosage and temperature increased. Weak acidic condition (pH 5.5) was favorable for BDE47 degradation with 96.8% BDE47 was removed within 7.5 min, while alkaline condition (9.0) was not conducive to the degradation of BDE47. The degradation of BDE47 by PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticles was a catalytic reductive debromination process via active H-species attack, wherein the sequential debromination was the dominant reaction. This study suggests that in the presence of moderate surfactant, PAC-Pd/Fe nanoparticles may be potentially employed to eliminate BDE47 in contaminated water.

Decentralized water supply is threatened by manganese pollution, especially in rural areas where groundwater is used as the main water source. This study aimed to establish a novel dual-mode membrane bioreactor (DMBR) with functionalized PAC-MnOx filters to effectively treat manganese-contaminated groundwater. DMBR operation modes could be switched by applying different filter fluidization strategies. In general, DMBR without filter fluidization (FIX-MBR) achieved 43 % better manganese removal than that with filter fluidization (FLU-MBR). Additional carbon sources stimulated manganese oxidizing bacteria (MnOB) activities for biologically oxidizing manganese, after which lamella-like structure birnessite with abundant active sites for concentrating and oxidizing manganese gradually formed. These processes facilitated the transformation of MnOx into birnessite, establishing a virtuous circle for autocatalytically oxidizing manganese. In FLU-MBR, dynamic stirring induced pulsed upwelling and enhanced membrane shear force (max = 2.20 Pa). Cake layer was timely removed and membrane flux was notably increased from 0.71 L/m 2 ·h to 12.57 L/m 2 ·h. As evidenced by increasing membrane permeability (37 L/m 2 ·h) and stable manganese removal (83.73 %), DMBR further benefited from increasing TMP from 0.01 MPa to 0.07 MPa. Exogenous mature birnessite enabled the rapid startup of DMBR, which effluent manganese fully satisfied the Standard for drinking water quality in China (GB5749-2022).

Photocatalysis-activated sulfate-radical advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP) is an effective approach to remove organic micropollutants from water. Here, we tested a photocatalysis-activated SR-AOP in which peroxydisulfate (PDS) was activated by composites of Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 photocatalyst supported onto commercial powdered activated carbon (Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC) under visible light irradiation. This “Vis-Cata-PDS” treatment exhibited outstanding degradation performance (97.96% removal) towards sulfamerazine (SMZ) following optimized reaction conditions of 0.1 g/L Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC and 0.1 g/L PDS at pH of 7. Synergistic effects were observed between the visible-light photocatalytic activation of PDS via direct electron transfer and nonradical PDS activation over pristine PAC within Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC. Both active radicals (SO 4 ·− , h + , ·O 2 − ) and nonradical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and the mediated electron transfer of pristine PAC within Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC were contributed to SMZ degradation. Based on intermediates identified by Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations, three degradation pathways were proposed and that were mostly attributed to SO 2 extrusion/Smiles-type rearrangement and S-N bond cleavage, and toxicity of intermediates were effectively alleviated. An inhibitory effect on SMZ degradation was observed for presence of HCO 3 − , whereas presence of SO 4 2− was less inhibitory and Cl − had no effect. The Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC composite displayed excellent reusability and stability, and it was effective towards a number of tested micropollutants (sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, ciprofloxacin, bisphenol A and methyl orange) and in real water matrixes. This work offers deep insights into the nonradical oxidation mechanism and application of Vis-Cata-PDS over a Bi 2 O 3 -TiO 2 /PAC composite for removal of organic micropollutants.

Fluoride contamination in water sources poses significant risks to human health and ecosystems, necessitating effective treatment strategies. This study investigates the influence of calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) and the basicity of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) on fluoride removal using PAC-PDMDAAC coagulation. Through systematic jar tests, the effects of varying PAC basicity (0.5, 1.0, and 2.0) and CaCl 2 addition sequences were examined under different fluoride concentrations (1.0, 3.0, and 10.0 mg/L). Results indicate that PAC with lower basicity (B = 0.5) exhibits superior fluoride removal efficiency, showing an increase of 20%–40% compared to PAC (B = 2.0), primarily due to the electro-neutralization mechanism of monomeric aluminum species (Ala). The introduction of PDMDAAC reduced the coagulation performance of PAC, especially at an initial fluoride concentration of 1 mg/L. The fluoride removal rate decreased from 80% to 57% at B = 0.5, from 91% to 62% at B = 1.0, and from 72% to 25% at B = 2.0. The order of adding CaCl 2 affects the removal rate of fluoride, with the CaCl 2 + PAC sequence outperforming the reverse sequence. The study highlights the importance of optimizing coagulant basicity and CaCl 2 dosing order to enhance fluoride removal efficiency, providing valuable insights for water treatment processes. These findings contribute to the development of more efficient and cost-effective coagulation strategies for fluoride removal in water treatment plants. Graphical PAC-based coagulation was optimized for fluoride removal by adjusting CaCl2 dosing sequence and alkalinity. Adding CaCl 2 before or after PAC altered floc formation and aluminum species distribution. PDMDAAC enhanced aggregation under low and high alkalinity, improving contaminant capture and clarifying the treatment pathway for concrete wastewater purification and reuse strategies.

Due to the intricate composition and recalcitrant nature of coking wastewater, the biochemical effluent often fails to meet standards. This study explored the preparation of particle electrodes, utilizing activated carbon powder (PAC) loading single-element Fe, Co, and Ni, as well as dual-element Ni–Fe and Co–Fe as catalyst. The particle electrode system was integrated with persulphate (PS) activation to enhance its performance. The effects of potassium persulphate (KPS) dosages, currents, and Ni:Fe ratios were investigated. The results showed that bimetallic particle electrodes outperformed their monometallic particle electrodes. Among the five electrode materials, Ni–Fe/PAC achieved the best degradation efficiency of 84.4% and the lowest energy consumption of 19.73 kW·h·kg−1 COD. When the initial concentrations of TOC and COD were set at 300 and 280 mg L−1, the Ni–Fe/PAC with 5 mmol L−1 KPS achieved removal efficiencies of 61.7 and 84.4%, respectively. The metals on Ni/PAC and Co/PAC existed in the zero-valent state, while Fe on Fe/PAC was present as Fe2O3. Co–Fe/PAC exhibited the formation of CoFe2O4 oxides. Ni–Fe/PAC possessed the lowest hydrogen evolution reaction potential (−0.28 V), and the highest oxygen evolution potential (2.4 V), and reached an electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) of 236.3 cm2. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) curves indicated that the direct redox reactions and indirect oxidation of pollutants occurred concurrently. Both •OH and ⋅SO4− radicals played crucial roles during the degradation processes. The degradation efficiency of organic matter was as follows: benzene compounds (88.4%) >heterocyclic compounds (75.3%) >polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (53.9%).

In this paper, we investigate the flocculation performance of composite coagulants polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) for landscape water treatment. The flocculant CPAM was synthesized through low-pressure UV initiation in our laboratory. This method was an environment-friendly and efficient approach. The flocculation mechanism of the combined flocculant was further analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, three-dimensional fluorescence analysis, zeta potential and microscopic observation. Results indicated that turbidity, UV 254 , phosphorus, and algae were effectively removed using PAC/CPAM flocculants. Humus and protein were easily removed from landscape water through flocculation. Moreover, electrical neutralization of PAC and the adsorption bridging effect of CPAM were found to be dominant in flocculation. The flocs from using PAC/CPAM were more compacted and stabilized than those from using PAC or CPAM alone. In addition, the appropriate divided addition of PAC was favorable for flocculation.

The presence of sulfonamides (SAs) in water has received increasing attention due to the risk to ecosystems. The adsorption and photocatalysis performance for sulfamerazine (SMZ) of Bi2O3–TiO2supported on powdered activated carbon (Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC) nanoparticles was evaluated. The amount of doped Bi2O3not only influenced the photocatalytic performance but also impacted the adsorption capacity. The adsorption mass transfer mechanism of Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC was elucidated and is further discussed in combination with the photocatalytic mechanism. It was indicated that Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC(10%–700 °C) performed best, and the SMZ removal by the adsorption–photocatalysis of Bi2O3–TiO2/PAC(10%–700 °C) reached 95.5%. Adsorption onto active sites was a major adsorption step, and external diffusion was assisted. Superoxide radical (●O2−) and hole (h+) were identified as the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) for SMZ removal. Benzene ring fracture, SO2extrusion and nitrogenated SMZ were proposed as the main pathways for photocatalysis. Meanwhile, alkaline conditions enhanced photocatalytic performance, while contrary effects were observed for adsorption. The adsorption–photocatalysis removal performance for SMZ in lake water was better than that for river water. It can be generalized for the potential application of photocatalysis coupling with adsorption to remove refractory antibiotics in water. Keywords:photocatalysis;adsorption;solar irradiation;ternary composite;sulfamerazine

In this study, in-situ flocculation kinetics tests, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and DFT theoretical calculation were used to analyze flocs properties of calcite flocs under combination of sodium alginate and AlCl 3 /polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and their adsorption mechanism. The results showed that the average size of calcite flocs treated with AlCl 3 -sodium alginate was smaller than that of flocs treated with PAC-sodium alginate. The number of residual fine particles in the slurry treated with AlCl 3 -sodium alginate was more than that in the slurry treated with PAC-sodium alginate. However, the fractal dimension of calcite flocs treated with AlCl 3 -sodium alginate was larger than those treated with PAC-sodium alginate. The sodium alginate and Al 3+ could form chemical adsorption on the calcite surface. AlCl 3 has a higher content of Ala than PAC. Ala could form chemical adsorption between sodium alginate and calcite, resulting in a high strength and fractal dimension of calcite flocs. Alb and Alc was not easily able to form metal bridges between calcite and sodium alginate. The sweep effect of PAC and sodium alginate leads to the formation of large-sized flocs. This work can promote the supplication of sodium alginate as a green flocculant.

To address the environmental challenges posed by phenol emissions in coal chemical wastewater, this study developed a polyanionic cellulose (PAC)-modified calcium bentonite-biochar composite (PB4%-C8%) with integrated adsorption-cutoff functionality. The composite was synthesized using calcium bentonite (CaB), PAC (4 wt %), and corn stalk biochar (8 wt %), and characterized via XRD, SEM-BET, and FTIR. PB4%-C8% exhibited a 188.3% increase in specific surface area (56.712 m2/g) compared to CaB (19.674 m2/g). Under phenol concentrations of 100–400 mg/L, PB4%-C8% demonstrated low permeability (1.0 × 10−12–1.0 × 10−10 m/s), meeting cutoff wall standards (<1 × 10−9 m/s). At pH 8 and a dosage of 5.0 g/L, it achieved beyond 70% phenol removal from 100 mg/L solutions, with adsorption behavior well-described by the Langmuir isotherm (R2 = 0.9975) and pseudo-second-order kinetics (R2 = 0.9921), yielding a maximum adsorption capacity of 15.48 mg/g. After four regeneration cycles, the removal efficiency remained at 56.5%, confirming structural stability. The synergistic effects of PAC (enhancing swelling and chemical resistance) and biochar (providing adsorption sites) endowed PB4%-C8% with dual adsorption-cutoff capabilities, offering a sustainable solution for phenol wastewater treatment and contaminated site remediation.

Various toxic metal ions were successfully removed from solid matrix into supercritical CO 2 (scCO 2 ) by open-chain crown ether bridged diphosphates at 313.15 K and 20 MPa, these diphosphates with different ester side chains and different length of ethylene oxide bridge group are highly soluble in supercritical CO 2 . The extraction efficiency ( E %) of heavy metals is between 55 and 89%. Mulliken charge distribution of ligand’s P=O coordination group was calculated to indicate the stability of metal complex. The ligand structure effects and the rationale for different selectivity were discussed. In addition, binding property of these diphosphates towards the alkaline earth metals was further studied following the same extraction procedures. Alkaline earth metal ions Ca 2+ , Sr 2+ and Ba 2+ were extracted with E % at 49–74%, 50–73% and 16–64%, respectively. DFT calculations were performed to investigate the interaction energy of the complexes and the correlation with the E % was discussed.
