Improving the interfacial properties of carbon fiber/low melting point PAEK composites by embellishing of bio-based PAEK sizing agent

Chengan Ma,Fei Yan,Shengtao Dai,Jintang Duan,Yuhui Ao,Gang Li,Gaosong Wang,Qingyu Zhou,Feng Bao,Liu Liu

In this study, a bio-based polyarylene ether ketone (bio-PAEK) was synthesized to prepare water-based sizing agents for enhancing the interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and matrix. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results indicated that the bio-PAEK exhibited good thermal properties. To improve the processability and reduce the processing temperature, PAEK with a low melting point (LMPAEK) was also used as the matrix resin . The glass-transition temperature (T g ) of LMPAEK was slightly higher than that of polyether ether ketone (PEEK), but its melting temperature (T m ) was lower 48.5 °C. A strong interface was created after introducing sizing agents onto the CF surface due to good compatibility between fibers and matrix. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and flexural strength of CF2/LMPAEK composites increased by 54.7 %, 56.0 % and 46.6 %, respectively, compared with the untreated composites. This study provided a novel approach to prepare water-based bio-PAEK sizing agents for CF composites with a low melting point matrix to be applied in additive manufacturing .

Amine-functionalized metal organic framework@graphene oxide as filler in PAEK-containing carboxyl group membrane for ultrafiltration with ultra-high permeability and strong fouling resistance

Zhaoli Wang,Wenjing Li,Yi Zhang,Yanyin Cheng,Junjian Yu,Tianming Dong,Xiaoyu Chi,Di Liu,Zhe Wang

ABSTRACT Achieving high fouling resistance and permeability using membrane separation technology in water treatment processes remains a challenge. In this work, a novel mixed-matrix membrane (MMM) (poly(arylene ether ketone) [PAEK]-containing carboxyl groups [PAEK-COOH]/UiO-66-NH 2 @graphene oxide [GO]) with superb fouling resistance and high permeability was prepared by the nonsolvent-induced phase separation method, by in-situ growth of UiO-66-NH 2 on the GO layer, and by preparing hydrophilic PAEK-COOH. On the basis of the structure and performance analysis of the MMM, the maximum water flux reached 591.25 L·m −2 ·h −1 for PAEK-COOH/UiO-66-NH 2 @GO, whereas the retention rate for bovine serum albumin increased from 85.40% to 94.87%. As the loading gradually increased, the hydrophilicity of the MMMs increased, significantly enhancing their fouling resistance. The strongest anti-fouling ability observed was 94.74%, which was 2.02 times greater than that of the pure membrane. At the same time, the MMMs contained internal amide and hydrogen bonds during the preparation process, forming a cross-linked structure, which further enhanced the mechanical strength and chemical stability. In summary, the MMMs with high retention rate, strong permeability, and anti-fouling ability were successfully prepared.

Direct electrochemical grafting of crystalline PAEK macromolecule on carbon fiber to enhance the interfacial properties of PEEK/CF composites

Shengdao Wang,Shuwen Zhang,Yanchao Yang,Zhongxin Dong,Guibin Wang

Electrochemical grafting of diazonium salts have been applied to improve interfacial properties of carbon fiber and matrix resin . However, these graft modifications are still limited to general-purpose carbon fiber reinforced resin matrix composites such as epoxy. In this research, the direct grafting of Poly (aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) macromolecule on carbon fiber was achieved with mild condition. Firstly, aniline was introduced into Poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) as pendent group to improve solubility and amino terminated group was introduced as precursor of diazonium salt. Then the graft was conduct through diazonium salt reduction. After modification, the aniline side group could be hydrolyzed off to recover crystallinity . To further analyze the graft, single molecular-force spectroscopy was introduced to investigate the surface of carbon fiber. Impressively, the extension curve suggested the PAEK macromolecule had been attached to surface through strong interaction. Combined this with XPS data, it was believed that the graft was a success. As a result, the grafted polymer along with the polymer that physically absorbed on carbon fiber in electrolyte can cooperate to strengthen the interface. The interfacial shear strength of the grafted carbon fiber and PEEK increased from 42.27 MPa to 97.33 MPa by 130.26%. The improvement mainly originated from the covalent bonding that connected the carbon fiber and the graft coating layer as well as the great compatibility between the graft coating layer and the matrix resin. These results also demonstrated the possibility to graft high performance polymers on carbon fiber through one-step modifications.

Mild amorphization and structural reconstruction enable non-destructive recycling of continuous fiber-reinforced PAEK composites

Zhongxin Dong,Yanchao Yang,Dianfu Ren,Yanwei Xiao,Di Wu,Liangliang Pei,Yunhe Xing,Han Feng,Shengdao Wang,Guibin Wang

Closed-loop recycling of PAEK composites via dynamic imination strategy. • Intractable PAEK is converted into a soluble amorphous intermediate. • Continuous fibers are non-destructively recovered with >95% strength retention. • The amorphous intermediate can regenerate into PAEK resin. • Recycled matrix retains pristine thermomechanical performance over multiple cycles. The recycling of high-performance fiber-reinforced PAEK composites is hindered by a paradox: the chemical inertness and crystallinity that provide exceptional stability also make their deconstruction extremely difficult, while conventional harsh methods irreversibly degrade both fibers and resin matrix. Herein, we report a targeted structural reconstruction strategy that enables the mild amorphization and closed-loop recovery of high-value composite components. With PEEK as a model, ZnCl 2 is utilized to catalyze the targeted imination of carbonyl groups. As verified by rigorous density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this specific coordination significantly reduces the kinetic activation barrier, enabling the disruption of the dense crystalline structure under extraordinarily mild conditions. Crucially, this crystalline-to-amorphous transition fundamentally overcomes mass transfer limitations, enabling the non-destructive extraction of continuous reinforcing fibers while retaining >95% of their pristine mechanical properties. After fiber separation, acid-catalyzed hydrolysis triggers structural reconstruction of the PEEK molecular backbone, largely restoring its original semi-crystalline morphology and key thermomechanical properties. This versatile recycling platform exhibits broad applicability across PAEK-based materials with diverse molecular architectures and maintains stable performance over three consecutive recycling cycles. This work provides a promising strategy with potential for further process development of high-performance PAEK composites.

Synergistic Interface Engineering and Band Alignment Enable High-Temperature Capacitive Performance in PAEK-Based Polymer Nanocomposites

Jian Wang,Miaomiao Zuo,Chenyang Tang,Weihao Dai,Yifei Zhang,Biyun Peng,Sen Liang,Xin Hu,Ning Zhu

Polymer dielectric capacitors are crucial devices of high-power electrical systems for capacitive energy storage. The large conduction loss of polymer dielectrics at elevated temperatures and electric fields is the main challenge. Herein, dielectric nanocomposites of BNNS/poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) regulated by interfacial engineering and band alignment are presented, significantly restraining the conduction loss and greatly enhancing the energy storage density at high temperatures and high electric fields. Dual-functionalized BNNS with −NH2 and −F groups (F–BNNS–NH2) were prepared and incorporated into carboxylate-functionalized PAEK (PAEK–COOH) to form robust interfacial bonding via an amino-carboxyl reaction, enabling excellent thermal stability and mechanical properties of the composites. Meanwhile, the electron-withdrawing nature of the −F group regulated the BNNS band structure to achieve widened Eg, which is responsible for the generation of electrons and holes trappings. At optimal conditions, a record-high breakdown strength of 600 MV/m with an energy density of 5.58 J/cm3 and an energy density of 5.01 J/cm3 at an efficiency of 90% is realized at 150 °C, which surpasses most reported nanocomposite dielectrics. This work establishes a paradigm for harmonizing interfacial reinforcement with electronic structure regulation in extreme-condition energy storage dielectrics.

Enhancing Tissue Adhesion and Osteoblastic Differentiation of MC3T3-E1 Cells on Poly(aryl ether ketone) by Chemically Anchored Hydroxyapatite Nanocomposite Hydrogel Coating

Chengde Liu,Liang Pan,Cheng Liu,Wentao Liu,Yizheng Li,Xitong Cheng,Xigao Jian

Tissue adhesion to bone implant and osteoblastic differentiation are the key factors to achieve poly(aryl ether ketone) (PAEK) implant osseointegration. However, physical interaction of implant with tissue and hydroxyapatite coating suffers from slow implant tissue integration and lack of long-term stability. In this study, a novel poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) containing allyl groups (APPBAESK) is coated onto PPBESK sheet for reacting with the allyl groups of the hydrogel coating to enhance its stability. N-Succinimidyl (NHS)-ester activated group and nano-hydroxyapatite (nano-HA) are introduced into the hydrogel synthesized from gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) and acrylic acid to construct a nanocomposite hydrogel coating on PPBESK which is a promising PAEK implant material. The hydrophilicity of the PPBESK sheet is improved by the hydrogel coating. The chemical components of the nanocomposite hydrogel coating are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, Attenuated total reflection infrared, and X-ray powder diffraction. The tissue shear adhesion strength of the hydrogel coating toward pig skin is enhanced due to the synergism of NHS-ester activated group and nano-HA. The osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 preosteoblasts is promoted by nano-HA in nanocomposite hydrogel coating. Therefore, the bifunctional nanocomposite hydrogel coating provides a great application prospect in the surface modification of PAEK implants in bone tissue engineering.

Unveiling the role of carbon fiber modulus on interfacial crystallization and mechanical properties of LM-PAEK composites

Kun Yu,Zongjie Cong,Yueyi Zhang,Jianan Yao,Gang Liu,Chunhai Chen,Hao Liu

During the composites forming process, the carbon fiber surface can serve as heterogeneous nucleation sites to induce the formation of unique interfacial crystallization structures-a critical factor determining the final interfacial properties and overall mechanical performance of composites. However, current research has primarily focused on standard modulus carbon fibers (SMCF) or single type fiber systems, while systematic investigations into how carbon fibers with different moduli regulate matrix crystallization behavior through their surface characteristics and consequently affect composite mechanical properties remain insufficient. This study investigates the influence of carbon fibers with varying moduli on the crystallization behavior of a self-developed low-melting temperature poly (aryl ether ketone) (LM-PAEK) matrix and the mechanical properties of its composites. The results demonstrate that the surface characteristics of carbon fibers exhibit synergistic effects with modulus dependent interfacial crystallization behavior, collectively determining the interfacial bonding strength and failure modes of the composites. Notably, while high modulus carbon fibers (HMCF) and ultrahigh modulus carbon fibers (UHMCF) promote the formation of transcrystalline (TC) layer, their enhanced surface chemical inertness leads to weakened chemical bonding interactions, and significant changes in fiber surface structure create a competitive relationship between physical and chemical interactions. By clarifying the intrinsic connection between fiber modulus, matrix crystallization characteristics, and mechanical performance, this study provides important theoretical support and practical guidance for the efficient utilization of high modulus carbon fibers in high-performance thermoplastic composites and the optimization of interfacial design.

Dual-factor decoupling Strategy: Independent quantification of crystallization and infiltration effects in PAEK-sized CF/PEEK composites

Yuan Li,Shengdao Wang,Zhongxin Dong,LiangLiang Pei,Di Wu,Yanxu Lu,Yanchao Yang,Guibin Wang

While interfacial enhancement in carbon fiber/polyether ether ketone (CF/PEEK) composites typically involves coupled mechanisms, the specific contributions of each mechanism remain poorly quantified. In this study, infiltration and crystallization are systematically decoupled and quantified by using poly aryl ether ketone (PAEK) sizing agents with controlled molecular weights (2000–8000) and distinct crystallization behaviors (para-crystalline and meta-amorphous). The roles of infiltration kinetics and interfacial crystallization are isolated by synthesizing PAEK polymers with identical chemical structures but varying intrinsic viscosities and crystallinities. Results reveal that crystallization contributes a consistent interfacial shear strength (IFSS) enhancement of approximately 26 MPa, nearly independent of molecular weight. In contrast, infiltration enhancement increases inversely with molecular weight, increasing from 13 MPa to 32 MPa as intrinsic viscosity decreases. Synergistic optimization achieves a record IFSS of 110.02 MPa in CF/PEEK composites. This work establishes a dual-factor decoupling strategy for quantifying interfacial mechanisms and provides a scalable approach for high-performance thermoplastic composite design.

Synergistic Effect of a Novel Aqueous Sizing Agent to Enhance the Interfacial Properties of CF/PAEK Composites

Yonglin Wang,Wenzhen Qin,Jianping Zhou,Shulin Bai,Guocheng Song,Lei Xiong,Juntong Huang,Hongbo Liang

Sizing agent is a thin layer of resin evenly covering the surface of carbon fibers, which plays an important role in interface and mechanical propertiesin carbon fiber/polyaryl ether ketonecomposites (CF/PAEK). In this study, a novel waterborne phenolphthalein-type polyaryletherketone-poly(styrenesulfonate) sodium (PEKC-NaPSS) sizing was specifically synthesizedby a simple, efficient and environmentally friendly UV induced grafting method, and was sized on CF surface. PEKC-NaPSS exhibits high thermal stability, with a decomposition temperature above 450 °C, meeting the processing temperature of CF/PAEK composite. Relative to desized CF/PAEK composites, the 1 wt% PEKC-NaPSS sized CF/PAEK composites exhibited significant enhancements in flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) of 38.03%, 38.2%, and 28.67%, respectively. Furthermore, the mechanism for interface improvement in PEKC-NaPSS sized CF/PAEK composites has been proposed. This study provides a straightforward and eco-friendly approachof producing high-performance CF/PAEK composites.

High-performance piezo-damping materials based on CNTs/BaTiO3/F-PAEK-b-PDMS under high temperature steam conditions

Xiang Yu,Yu Zhang,Lan Jin,Jingyu Chen,Zhenhua Jiang,Yunhe Zhang

Polymeric piezo-damping composites with robust piezo-damping performance under high temperature steam conditions are highly desirable. In this study, we demonstrate a novel piezo-damping material, consisting of fluorinated (polyaryletherketone)-(polydimethylsiloxane) block copolymers (F-PAEK-b-PDMS) as matrix, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as conductive filler, and barium titanate (BT) as piezoelectric phase. Taking the advantages of hydrophobic property of PDMS and good thermal stability of F-PAEK, piezo-damping materials exhibit good stability under high temperature steam conditions. Furthermore, for the incompatibility between F-PAEK and PDMS, microphase separation appears, which can greatly increase the friction between molecules for better damping capability. Good damping performances that loss factor > 0.3 over a broad temperature range of 55–115 °C (≈60 °C) can be achieved. Those outstanding performances can effectively broaden the practical application of piezo-damping composites under harsh conditions.

Enhancing interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber/poly(phthalazinone ether ketone) composites by the hybrid sizing agent of hydroxyapatite-reinforced PAEK-COOH

Chengde Liu,Pengxin Mei,Xitong Cheng,Cheng Liu,Nan Li,Xigao Jian

Improving the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber (CF)/polymer composite is an urgent demand to enhance its mechanical properties. A kind of poly(aryl ether ketone) with carboxyl groups (PAEK-COOH) was newly synthesized. PAEK-COOH is similar to the thermal properties of PPEK matrix. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was easily dispersed in an NMP solution containing PAEK-COOH. Different kinds of hybrid sizing agents were obtained for preparing the prepreg through the solution impregnation. The hot-pressing method was employed to produce the laminated composites. Flexural strength, flexural modulus and interlamellar shear strength (ILSS) of 0HP@CF/PPEK composites were improved by 8.8%, 17.3%, and 14.7%, respectively, in comparison to desized CF/PPEK. The interface bonding between CF and PPEK was improved by the addition of PAEK-COOH sizing agent. Meanwhile, compared with desized CF/PPEK laminates, flexural strength, flexural modulus and ILSS of 5HP@CF/PPEK composites were enhanced by 63.5%, 87.4%, and 40.9%, respectively. The crack propagation path became dispersed and the stress was effectively absorbed when the sizing agent containing nano-hydroxyapatite particles. By characterizing and reconstructing the transverse and longitudinal fracture in composite materials, the failure process of the composites under the action of stress was explained, and the interface theories of CF reinforced polymer were further explored. Highlights A kind of polyaryl ether ketone containing carboxyl functional group (PAEK-COOH)was newly synthesized. HAp was distributed in the polymer sizing agent to obtain a HAp/PAEK-COOH hybrid sizing agent. The interfacial adhesion of CF/PPEK composite was greatly improved by the hybrid sizing agent.

In situ surface crosslinked tight ultrafiltration membrane prepared by one-step chemical reaction-involved phase inversion process between activated PAEK-COOH and PEI

Chunli Liu,Hongchao Mao,Jifu Zheng,Suobo Zhang

Carboxylated cardo poly(arylene ether ketone)s (PAEK-COOH) is a thermally stable and hydrophilic membrane fabrication material. Herein, PAEK-COOH was employed as membrane material, being dissolved in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and 1,4-dioxane (DO) mixed solvent and activated by adding 1-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-3-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to prepare polymer casting solution . Then the activated polymer film was immersed into polyethylenimine (PEI) aqueous solution that served as coagulation bath for taking the one-step chemical reaction-involved phase inversion process. As illustrated by the SEM images, the fabricated crosslinked tight ultrafiltration membrane had a dense and integrally skinned separation skin layer. Chemical composition and hydrophilicity of membrane surface were studied by ATR-FTIR and water contact angle , respectively. Those results revealed that, via the in situ crosslinking of activated carboxylic acid group and PEI along with the phase inversion process, the PEI molecules had been covalently bonded onto membrane surface and resulted in the increase of membrane hydrophilicity. The optimized membrane had a molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 12.7   kDa and an isoelectric point of 7.4, indicating which is slightly positively charged. The one-step chemical reaction involved phase inversion between reactive macromolecules, i.e., activated PAEK-COOH original polymer film and PEI crosslinker in coagulant, was an efficient and convenient approach for fabrication of highly permeable and selective tight ultrafiltration membranes. Membrane had a dye solution permeability of 80–84   L   m −2   h −1   bar −1 and Congo red (CR) rejection of 99.9% in 100   h long-term filtration testing, being capable for dye removal from textile wastewater .
