Tribological properties of amidoxime-based protic ionic liquids as lubricant additives for PAO10

Zijing Bai,Yumeng Wang,Wei Shi,Peng Gao,Zengyun Jian

Protic ionic liquids (PILs) have been emphasized in recent years owing to their convenient synthesis routines and outstanding lubricity properties. In this work, amidoxime-based PILs were investigated as additives in PAO10. The tribological tests demonstrated that these newly synthesized PILs could highly improve the friction-reducing, anti-wear, variable-frequency and load-carrying capacity properties of PAO10. The results of contact angle, ECR, SEM-EDS and XPS analysis revealed that the tribofilm consisted of a physical absorption layer containing organic carbonaceous species and a tribochemical film containing Fe 2 O 3 , which is responsible for the significant improvement of tribological performances of PAO10.

Stimuli-responsive PAO10@PSF/Fe3O4 microcapsules for regulation of tribological properties

Liang Bao,Chengkun Wang,Yaoming Zhang,Shoubing Chen,Liming Tao,Lihe Guo,Rui Yang,Peng Liu,Qihua Wang,Tingmei Wang

Magnetic PAO10@PSF/Fe 3 O 4 microcapsules (MMCs), loaded with PAO10, were prepared by solvent evaporation method using PFOTES/Fe 3 O 4 particles stabilized oil-in-water emulsion as template, and embedded into epoxy (EP) to prepare self-lubricating composites. Further, the tribological properties of the MMCs were analyzed, and the wear mechanism were discussed in detail. When the content of microcapsules was 20 wt%, compared with pure epoxy resin, the friction coefficient (COF) and wear rate of epoxy/magnetic microcapsule composites (EP/MMCs) decreased by 91.2 % and 92.9 %, respectively, primarily attributed to the formation of lubricating oil film during friction, and the internal lubricating oil and the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles on the shell were formed a coordinated solid-liquid lubrication effect. During the preparation of EP/MMCs, MMCs could respond to the external magnetic field, the distribution of the microcapsules in the composites could be controlled by the magnetic field, thereby affecting the tribological properties of the composites at different positions. In addition, the composite material had light stimulation response performance. Under the irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) light, the friction coefficient of EP/MMCs decreased rapidly and responded quickly. This study provides a high-performance friction material, which is expected to regulate the tribological properties of the material according to external stimuli to achieve intelligent lubrication.

A novel hindered phenol based multi-functional lubricant additive with enhanced antioxidant and tribological performance

Yuexia Huang,Qiang Chen,Jing Yang,Pingxia Guo,Xiao Liu,Kai Feng,Meirong Cai,Feng Zhou

A novel oil-miscible hindered phenol based multifunctional lubricant additive (BHT)-NP was synthesized and its antioxidant, tribological properties were thoroughly characterized. Compared with the commercially available hindered phenolic antioxidants (ST-135), the (BHT)-NP exhibited enhanced antioxidant and wear reduction properties at room temperature or 100 ℃. Specifically, adding 4 wt% (BHT)-NP to PAO10 could prolong its oxidation induction time from 4 to 70 min, which is 2.2 times that of ST-135. Additionally, this lubricant system could also decrease the wear volume of PAO10 + 4 wt% ST-135 by 88.67 % (rt), 88.42 % (100 ℃), respectively. Subsequently, lubrication mechanism analysis results suggested that an effective protection film was fabricated on the sliding steel surface, which significantly prevented the direct contact between the sliding pairs.

Ultralow friction and wear of alternating CrN/Cu3N multilayer coatings via tribocatalytically generated graphene

Haijie Chen,Zihao Zhang,Zhiwen Zheng,Jingjing Zhang,Dan Qiao,Chao Zhang

In response to the critical issues of delamination and cracking that plague CrN films within oil lubrication systems, this work designed and prepared multilayer alternating sputtering CrN/Cu 3 N films, and investigated the tribological properties under PAO10 lubrication, with particular emphasis on the influence of the composition, structure, coating arrangement and the mechanical properties of these films. The results showed that the composite film CrN/Cu 3 N (FH-Cu), which was alternately sputtered and capped with copper nitride, exhibited the optimal tribological properties, achieved a stable friction coefficient of 0.065 and the lowest wear rate (9.20 ×10 −8 mm 3 ·N −1 ·m −1 ). FIB-TEM analyses and Raman spectra indicated that a lubricating film containing graphene was in-situ generated at the friction interface. The DFT simulation results showed that the adsorption effect of copper nitride on the surface layer of the composite film FH (Cu) reduces the dissociation energy of PAO10 by 48 %. The results of differential charge density and Bader charge indicate that Cu 3 N (100) transfers 0.08e to PAO10 during friction, thereby demonstrating the frictional catalytic mechanism of Cu 3 N at the frictional interface. This work provides important insights into design of high-performance CrN/Cu 3 N composite films, highlighting the interactions among microstructure, catalytic activity, and friction-induced carbon films.

Influences of the spacing between nitrogen atoms on tribological performance of dual active site phosphorus-nitrogen (P-N) ionic liquid

Yue Lou,Yuxiang Liang,Mengya Zhao,Wenqi Rui,Zhenming Li

Four dual active site ionic liquids (ILs): N2NP0, N4NP0, N6NP0, N10NP0 and three single active site ILs: N2P0, N3P0, N8P0 were synthesized successfully, furthermore, anti-wear and extreme pressure properties of the additives were tested with 0.5 wt% concentration in PAO10 base oil. The results showed that N6NP0 with carbon chain length of six between the nitrogen atoms exhibits the best tribological performance (The wear scar diameter is 0.39 mm, the values of P B (the last non-seizure loads) and P D (weld points) were 135 Kgf and 200 Kgf, respectively), which is mainly attributed to the formed thicker tribo-film (thickness of 50–60 nm) on the friction surface. Through analyzing the tribological morphology, chemical composition and tribo-film microstructure of wear scars surface by SEM-EDS, 3D profile, AFM, XPS and FIB-TEM, the lubrication mechanism of ILs was revealed. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed that the tribological performance of dual active site ionic liquid additives depend strongly on their molecular configuration. It was found that rational adjustment of the length of the ILs cationic active site linkage group results in a reduction of the steric hindrance of the entire molecule. This study will help to guide the design of ILs with good tribological performance and low phosphorus content.
