The rigidity and toughness of the resin matrix significantly influence the impact resistance of ballistic composites. However, the relationship between the properties of the resin matrix and the ballistic performance of the composites remains inadequately defined. In this study, the ballistic performance of composites with various matrix resins was investigated to assess how matrix toughness affects energy absorption. A series of epoxy resins exhibiting different rigidity and toughness were combined with PBO (poly-p-phenyl-2,6-benzobisoxazole) fibers, and their quasi-static mechanical properties were evaluated to analyze their effectiveness in resisting ballistic impacts. In ballistic test, the brittle matrix composite demonstrated concentrated fiber breakage and localized damage, while the toughened matrix composite exhibited more dispersed damage characterized by reduced fiber breakage and minimal delamination, suggesting enhanced energy absorption via deformation within the matrix. Compared with the specific energy absorption value of the brittle matrix composite material, which is only 9.28 Jm 2 /kg, the specific energy absorption value of the tough matrix composite material has increased by 125% to 20.88 Jm 2 /kg. These findings underscore the critical role that matrix toughness plays in improving ballistic-resistant performance by facilitating better energy distribution while mitigating fiber damage. Highlights Matrix toughness significantly enhances ballistic energy absorption in composites. Toughened matrix reduces fiber breakage and delamination under ballistic impact. Toughened matrix composite achieves a 125% higher specific energy absorption. Findings offer insights for designing high-performance ballistic-resistant materials.

Poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fiber is currently one of the best-performing organic fibers; however, its low UV aging resistance limits its use. To improve the UV aging performance of PBO fibers, a novel PBO-Fe-PDA fiber was created by depositing a biomimetic structure of polydopamine (PDA) on the surface of PBO fibers with the transition metal ion Fe3+ as the active center. The surface morphology and elemental composition of PBO-Fe-PDA fibers were investigated. It was revealed that Fe3+ formed a coordination bond structure with the oxazole ring, and PDA was successfully loaded onto the surface of PBO-Fe fibers. After UV aging, the crystallinity and crystallographic orientation of PBO fibers significantly decrease, microcrystals inside the fibers slip, and the size of microvoids in the fibers rises. As a result, the strength of PBO fibers was significantly decreased after UV aging. The anti-UV aging capacity of PBO-Fe-PDA fibers, on the other hand, has been enhanced, as evidenced by a slight drop in crystallinity and crystallographic orientation and a significant decrease in the size growth of internal microvoids in the fibers after UV aging. The tensile strength retention of PBO-Fe-PDA fibers after UV aging increased by 93.13% when compared to PBO fibers without altering the fibers’ initial strength. The testing results show that this surface modification method is simple to employ and extends the service life of PBO fibers significantly.

When a spacecraft works in low earth orbit, PBO fiber/epoxy resin composite as structural material not only has the poor interfacial properties, but also faces the attack of atomic oxygen (AO). To solve the two drawbacks, a PBO fiber hierarchical reinforcement has been fabricated without degrading the fiber by a mussel-inspired "two-step" method based on dopamine (DA) assistant co-deposition and chemical grafting technologies. The surface wettability, roughness (Ra) and reactivity of the obtained PBO@PDA-Si-GO are increased significantly in comparison with those of untreated one. The reinforcement offered simultaneously remarkable enhancement in interfacial shear strength (IFSS) and AO erosion resistance of the composites, which laid theoretical and experimental foundations for the realization of the structure/function integration design of advanced composites.

In this study, the interfacial properties of PBO fiber were enhanced significantly through constructing the rigid dendritic polymers on its surface. The rigid branched structure and massive functional groups of dendritic polymers endowed the interphase with more powerful physical entanglement and mechanical interlocking, abundant chemical bonding, improved interfacial compatibility and moderate mechanical properties. Compared with untreated PBO fiber composites, the interfacial shear strength and interlaminar shear strength of modified PBO fiber (PBO-M2) composites increased by 81.49 and 42.17%, respectively. Meanwhile, the impact strength raised from 68.15 to 103.28 kJ/m 2 due to the construction of rigid dendritic polymers. Dynamic mechanical evaluation also indicated that the storage modulus (at 30 °C) of PBO-M2 composites increased from 34 ± 2 to 47 ± 3 GPa. Moreover, the hydrothermal aging resistance of PBO-M2 composites was also markedly improved.

PBO fiber is one of the most promising reinforcements in resin matrix composite because of its excellent mechanical properties . However, the inert and smooth surfaces make it the poor interface adhesion with resin matrix, which seriously limits the application in composites. In this article, we report a method to modify the surface of PBO fibers with 2,2-Bis (3-amino-4-hydroxyphenyl) hexafluoropropane(BisAPAF)in supercritical CO 2 to enhance interfacial properties . Chemical structures , surface elemental composition and functional groups, and surface morphology were characterized by FT-IR spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The mechanical properties of the samples were tested by a tensile tester. Static contact angle and microdebonding tests were used to characterize the wetting ability and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of the fiber and epoxy resin. The results showed that the BisAPAF could be solved in scCO 2 and introduced more groups, –NH 2 , –OH, and –CF 3 on the fiber surface, resulting in the mechanical properties and the wettability of PBO fiber slightly improved. Moreover, the fiber surface roughness was also increased obviously. The IFSS between the modified PBO fiber and epoxy resin increased from 8.18 MPa to 31.4 MPa when the treating pressure was 14 MPa. In general, the method to modify PBO fibers surface using BisAPAF in scCO 2 can effectively improve their interfacial properties.

The development of lightweight and high-performance fiber-reinforced composite protective equipment holds great significance for national defense and personal safety. Composite materials necessitate a matrix resin exhibiting both strength and toughness, while the design and application remains significant challenge. Herein, a new composite material with multi-scale energy dissipation structure is designed based on the failure mechanism of composite materials under impact, the impact resistance of the obtained material (129.2MJ·m −3 ) is significantly improved by 34 % compared with traditional composite material (96.5 MJ·m −3 ). The incorporation of epoxy vitrimer with dynamic non-covalent bonds imparts an impact-stiffening effect to the originally brittle matrix, thereby meeting higher requirements for impact resistance. The addition of carbon nanotubes in the epoxy vitrimer matrix improves its strength and toughness. The reinforcement consists of high-performance PBO fiber that is surface treated with oxygen plasma. The composite material exhibits excellent interface bonding, which directly contributes to the improvement of interlaminar shear strength from 7.84 MPa to 11.56 MPa. This composite material structure design based on multi-scale energy dissipation mechanism confirms the possibility of further lightweight and high-performance bulletproof composite materials.

Poly(p-phenylene-2,6-benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers possess excellent dielectric, mechanical properties and heat resistance. However, the surface of PBO fibers is smooth and highly chemical inert, resulting in poor interfacial compatibility to polymer matrix, which severely limits its wider application in high-performance fiber-reinforced resin matrix composites. In this work, random copolymers (P(S- co -BCB- co- MMA)) containing benzocyclobutene in the side-chain were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, which were then utilized to form dense random copolymer membrane on the surface of PBO fibers by thermally cross-linking at 250 °C (PBO@P fibers). Four kinds of synthesized P(S- co -BCB- co -MMA) with different number-average molar mass ( M n ) were well controlled and possessed narrow dispersity. When the M n was 32300, the surface roughness of PBO@P fibers was increased from 11 nm (PBO fibers) to 39 nm. In addition, PBO@P fibers presented the optimal interfacial compatibility with bisphenol A cyanate (BADCy) resins. And the single fiber pull-out strength of PBO@P fibers/BADCy micro-composites was 4.5 MPa, increasing by 45.2% in comparison with that of PBO fibers/BADCy micro-composites (3.1 MPa). Meantime, PBO@P fibers still retained excellent tensile strength (about 5.1 GPa). Overall, this work illustrates a simple and efficient surface functionalization method, which would provide a strong theoretical basis and technical support for controlling the surface structure & chemistry of inert substrates.

The surface of poly( p -phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO) fibers was modified by a hybrid coating composed of polydopamine (PDA) and the hydrolysis products of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (KH551) using a facile and environment-friendly mussel-inspired co-deposition strategy. The surface morphologies and chemical composition of the obtained hierarchical reinforcement (PBO@PDA/Si) were measured for confirming the successful deposition of the coating. Compared to untreated PBO fiber, the surface roughness and wettability of PBO@PDA/Si were increased remarkably. Importantly, PBO@PDA/Si showed a 50.2% increase in the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of resulting composite without any decrease in its tensile strength (TS). In addition, its atomic oxygen (AO) erosion and hydrothermal aging resistances were significantly improved. The “one-step” mussel-inspired surface modification strategy starts from simple chemistry and cheap raw materials, and may provide a novel and versatile design for fabricating multifunctional hierarchical reinforcements.

To improve the interfacial adhesion and mechanical performance of PBO fiber composites, CNTs were uniformly grafted onto them at a high-density. The grafting of CNTs with massive reactive groups can improve the surface wettability and interfacial interaction of PBO fibers with epoxy resin. The IFSS and ILSS values of the modified composites (PBO-CNT-3) increased by 103.09 and 62.73%, respectively. As CNTs can strengthen interfacial regions of the composites, the mechanical properties (hardness and modulus) of the interphase were enhanced significantly. This led to the effective transfer of interfacial load, elimination of stress concentration, and improvement in the structural stability of the composites. As a result, the impact strength of the modified composites (PBO-CNT-3) was up to 103.76 kJ/m 2 (an increase of 56.24%) compared to the original composites. The surface morphology and deformation behavior of the fractured composites indicate that the interfacial failure mode of the composites grafted with CNTs changes from adhesive failure to both cohesive and substrate failure. This strategy of grafting CNTs at a high-density opens a new avenue for the interfacial regulation of structural composites, ultra-capacitor, sensor, and catalytic materials.

Grafting modification is an effective means to improve the interfacial bonding properties of fibre composites. In this study, a series of grafted poly( p -phenylene benzobisoxazole)-polyurethane (PBO-PU) fibres were fabricated using online continuous air plasma treatment. The resulting PBO-PU fibres were characterised using attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The results of interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) tests show that all the PBO-PU fibre reinforced epoxy resin composites exhibited superior interfacial adhesion properties compared with the untreated composites, and the ILSS reached 48.0 MPa, indicating an improvement of 99.49 %. Our findings demonstrate that plasma grafting provides the possibility to realise industrial production of PBO/epoxy composites exhibiting high interlaminar shear strengths.

Poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) (PBO)/Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) composite materials exhibit substantial potential for wave-transparent applications due to the excellent dielectric properties of raw materials. In this work, we reported a facile paper-making method for preparing large-area micro-nano PBO/PTFE composite papers with uniform and compact structure by compounding PBO chopped fibers (PCFs), PBO nanofibers (PNFs), and PTFE. Notably, the simultaneous formation of an interconnected PBO fiber network and PTFE matrix promotes optimal structural uniformity, while the introduction of PNFs between PCFs and PTFE acts as an interface compatibilizer that effectively reduces interface defects in the papers. These structural advantages contribute to the composite papers’ exceptional dielectric properties (dielectric constant as low as 2.142 and dielectric loss as low as 0.001 at 10 GHz) and high wave-transmission efficiency (exceed 95.8 % across 2–22 GHz). Meanwhile, the composite papers feature favorable thermo-mechanical property and UV aging resistance, demonstrating their high potential in wave-transparent applications.
