Calcium oxide (CaO), utilized in semi-dry/dry desulfurization systems at municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) plants, demonstrates some capability to remove polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). This study assessed the gas-phase PCDD/F removal performance of CaO, activated carbon (AC) and CaO-AC mixtures. Alone, CaO achieved removal efficiencies of only 31.9% for mass and 50.8% for I-TEQ concentration. However, CaO-AC mixtures exhibited significantly higher efficiencies, reaching 96.0% and 92.5% for mass and I-TEQ concentrations, respectively, surpassing those of AC alone, which were 74.7% and 58.5%. BET analysis indicated that CaO’s limited surface area and pore structure are major constraints on its adsorption performance. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the π-π electron donor-acceptor (EDA) interaction enhances the adsorption between AC and PCDD/F, with adsorption energies ranging from -1.02 to -1.24 eV. Additionally, the induced dipole interactions between CaO and PCDD/F contribute to adsorption energies ranging from -1.13 to -1.43 eV. Moreover, with increasing chlorination levels, PCDD/F molecules are more predisposed to accept electron transfers from the surfaces of AC or CaO, thereby facilitating adsorption. The calculation for mixed AC and CaO showed that CaO modifies AC’s properties, enhancing its ability to adsorb gas phase PCDD/Fs, with the higher adsorption energy and more electrons transfer, aligning with gas phase PCDD/Fs adsorption experiments. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of how CaO influences the PCDD/F adsorption performance of AC.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) have attracted widespread concern due to their high toxicity, and their difficult manipulation in laboratories has made the research process tough. Thus, in our work, furan is selected as the model compound owing to the same structure of a central oxygenate ring. Although catalytic oxidation is regarded as an effective and applicable method for the abatement of PCDD/Fs, the synthesis of low-temperature catalysts is still a challenging problem in practical applications. Considering this situation, we prepared a novel V 2 O 5 /TiO 2 catalyst modified with N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (NHPC) via a wet impregnation method. The V/T-1%NHPC catalyst could achieve expectant low-temperature performances with 50% furan conversion at 150 °C and a complete conversion at 200 °C, which decreased 23 °C and 40 °C compared to the V/T catalyst respectively. Moreover, the addition of NHPC presented lifting chemical stability during long-time test. The addition of NHPC in V/T catalysts decreased the formation of crystalline V 2 O 5 and increased the percentages of V 5+ and O lat , which improved the utilization of vanadium ions and the catalytic activity. Simultaneously, the higher binding energy shift of O lat implied more reaction possibility with other oxidise reactants. Importantly, this work proved the lifting catalytic activity by the interaction between catalysts and NHPC, and proposed the promoting effects of the N element. The results showed that the content of the pyridinic N and graphitic N in NHPC changed after combining with V/T catalyst, which played crucial roles in the excellent catalytic performance. Overall, this work provides comprehensive research of the V/T-1%NHPC catalyst toward furan oxidation at low temperature and explain the effects of N-doped biomass carbon in catalytic activity clearly, which gave a new thought to design low-temperature catalysts in PCDD/Fs degradation. Besides, the internal functional mechanisms of N species are worth further exploration in future studies. Graphical abstract

Polyurethane (PU) is a widely used polymeric material that can be valorized through thermal treatment, utilizing its calorific value while reducing waste. However, the thermal processing of waste polyurethane (WPU) can generate secondary pollutants such as NH 3 and HCN. Previous studies have shown that the co-treatment of municipal solid waste with WPU can inhibit polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) formation. Therefore, this study focused on 1,2,3-trichlorobenzene (1,2,3-TCB), a known precursor of PCDD/Fs, to preliminarily investigate its degradation efficiency and mechanism during the combustion of WPU. Experimental results indicated that the hydrodechlorination rate (HDR) of 1,2,3-TCB was significantly enhanced at temperatures exceeding approximately 450 °C, reaching 3.5 times that of the control group. This trend is consistent with previous findings, and such behavior may be attributed to the nitrogenous species released from WPU. With a further increase in temperature, the total degradation rate (TDR) of 1,2,3-TCB reached a maximum of 70% in the 500–550 °C range. Compared to traditional methods relying on external chemical inhibitors, this study utilizes the inherent inhibitory effects of waste polyurethane, offering a sustainable waste-treating-waste strategy for the degradation of persistent organic pollutants. Finally, the degradation mechanism of 1,2,3-TCB was elucidated. This study provides a novel approach for reducing the emissions of PCDD/Fs during the co-combustion of municipal solid waste.

Catalytic oxidation is regarded an effective technique to control the emissions of chlorinated benzenes (CBzs) and polychlorinated dibenzo- p -dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) from waste incinerators . Among the numerous factors affecting the degradation efficiency of CBzs and PCDD/Fs, limited attention has been paid to the impact of hydrochloric acid (HCl) present in the flue gas . This study investigates how HCl affects the catalytic degradation of 1,2-dichlorbenzene (1,2-DCBz) at different reaction times and temperature regimes. The results showed that the removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz, which was achieved by the V 2 O 5 /WO 3 -TiO 2 (VWTi) catalyst, decreased the largest by 10% in the presence of HCl. Furthermore, it was found that the increasing concentration of water vapor hindered the degradation efficiency of 1,2-DCBz. No relationship between the process temperature and the destruction efficiency of PCDD/Fs was observed in the presence of HCl. Potential increasing of the removal efficiency of 1,2-DCBz was confirmed by adding different amount of activated carbon (AC) in the presence of HCl.

Heavy metals and PCDD/Fs in fly ash from 32 MSWIs in Zhejiang were assessed. • Zn, Pb, and Cu dominated heavy metal profiles, PCDD/Fs were below thresholds. • Heavy metals and PCDD/Fs showed different spatial distribution patterns. • Heavy metals pose relatively high health and environmental risks. • PCDD/Fs pose high non-carcinogenic risk, especially for children. The occurrence of hazardous heavy metals and polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) has raised increasing environmental concern. In this study, fly ash samples collected from 32 MSWIs across Zhejiang Province were analyzed to investigate the contamination levels, spatial heterogeneity, health, and environmental risks of heavy metals and PCDD/Fs. The results showed that several heavy metals exceeded their element-specific intervention thresholds, whereas the toxic equivalent concentrations of PCDD/Fs remained below the intervention thresholds of 3 μg TEQ/kg. Based on the sampled MSWIs, relatively higher heavy metal contamination levels were observed in several northern and southern sampling areas, particularly Huzhou and Wenzhou. Relatively higher PCDD/Fs levels were observed in some southeastern coastal sampling areas, including Taizhou and Wenzhou. Health risk assessment identified Cd, Cr, Pb, and Sb as the major contributors to potential human health risks, while ecological risk assessment indicated that Pb and Cu were the dominant ecological risk contributors. Although PCDD/Fs showed no significant ecological risk under the applied assessment framework, cumulative exposure to the 17 toxic congeners suggested a potential non-carcinogenic health risk, with the estimated risk for children being 3.64 times higher than that for adults. Overall, this study provides a province-wide characterization of the contamination levels, spatial distribution, health, and environmental risks of heavy metals and PCDD/Fs in representative MSWIs fly ash in Zhejiang Province, offering useful evidence for regional fly ash pollution control, risk prioritization, and environmental management.
