Sustained Release of Hydrogen by PdH-Te Nanozyme for Anti-Inflammatory Therapy Against Atherosclerosis

Min Xu,Xuan Zhang,Baowen Dong,Wenjuan Wang,Zhihuan Zhao

Atherosclerosis is induced by the persistent inflammation of the arterial wall. The regulation of inflammation through active drugs can mitigate atherosclerotic lesions, but the therapeutic outcome is limited due to its insufficient efficacy and stability. Herein, a PdH-Te nanozyme with excellent reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging capability is designed for anti-inflammatory therapy, thereby preventing foam cell formation to alleviate atherosclerosis. As expected, the PdH-Te nanozyme shows outstanding multiple antioxidant enzyme activities and sustained hydrogen release properties. Benefiting from decreased ROS levels by enzyme catalysis, PdH-Te nanozyme significantly suppresses the pro-inflammatory cytokines for atherosclerosis treatment. Taken together, the presented results demonstrate that inhibition of inflammation based on PdH-Te nanozyme can effectively treat atherosclerosis, identifying an attractive strategy against cardiovascular diseases.

CoOx Modified VOx/Al2O3 Catalysts for Propane Dehydrogenation in CO2 and CO2-Free Conditions

Yazhou Shuang,Fang Wang,Weihao Zhao,Hongkang Wang,Zelin Ma,Jie Jian,Shiyuan Wang,Jiulong Wang,Longyang Li,Pengfei Guo,Qian Ye,Fei Xu,Hongqiang Wang

Vanadium oxide (VOx)-based catalysts for propane (C3H8) dehydrogenation (PDH) demonstrate excellent redox properties due to the multivalent property of vanadium; however, the unsatisfactory catalytic efficiency and recondite catalytic mechanisms seriously restrict their widespread applications. Herein, we proposed the doping of cobalt oxide (CoOx) species into VOx supported on alumina for simultaneously facilitating the catalytic performance in PDH with (oxidative) and without CO2 (nonoxidative). The CoOx-doped VOx species are uniformly impregnated onto alumina supports through a ligand-free wet chemical impregnation method, without any additives. The results show that the CoOx doping modulates the electronic interactions between VOx species, thus increasing the reductive capability of the catalyst and mitigating the competitive absorption of CO2 with C3H8. Consequently, superior catalytic performances are achieved in both nonoxidative and CO2-oxidative PDH reactions compared to pristine VOx species without CoOx doping. Otherwise, the dry reforming of C3H8 is significantly inhibited compared to pristine CoOx species without VOx doping. Notably, a higher and impressive conversion rate up to 55.5% for target products (C3H6) is achieved in nonoxidative PDH compared to CO2-oxidative PDH on the CoOx-doped VOx catalyst, indicative of the competitive adsorption between reactants (CO2 and C3H8) during the catalytic process. This study provides a forward-looking mechanism to establish separate reaction pathways for each reactant (CO2 and C3H8) to improve mass transfer, thereby enhancing the efficiency of CO2-oxidative PDH.

Multifunctional PdH-hydride MOFs for synergistic hydrogen and photothermal antibacterial therapy in accelerated wound healing

Qing Wang,Daixing Zhang,Yining Qi,Changbao Huang,Dejun Ding,Chuanliang Liu

Introduction: The growing threat of bacterial infections poses a critical challenge to public health, underscoring the urgent need for innovative antibacterial agents and therapeutic strategies. In response, we have developed a multifunctional nanoplatform based on palladium-hydride metal–organic frameworks (P(H)ZPAg) for synergistic hydrogen and photothermal antibacterial therapy. Methods: This nanoplatform integrates palladium hydride (PdH) encapsulated within a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8), surface modification with polydopamine (PDA), and in situ generation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to achieve enhanced antibacterial efficacy. Comprehensive characterization was performed to assess hydrogen release kinetics, photothermal performance, and silver-mediated bactericidal activity. The therapeutic potential of P(H)ZPAg was further evaluated in vivo using a Staphylococcus aureus-infected rat wound model. Results: The P(H)ZPAg nanoplatform demonstrated a successful combination of hydrogen release, photothermal conversion, and silver ion-based antibacterial mechanisms. In vitro assays revealed potent synergistic antibacterial effects against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In vivo studies showed that treatment with P(H)ZPAg nanoparticles significantly enhanced wound healing and bacterial clearance compared to control groups.Discussion: These findings highlight the potential of combining hydrogen therapy, photothermal therapy, and silver ion release within a single nanoplatform to markedly improve antibacterial outcomes. This study presents a promising strategy for the development of multifunctional nanotherapeutics, offering a novel and effective approach for managing topical bacterial infections and promoting wound healing.

4-(Diethylamino)salicylaldehyde exerts nematicidal activity against Ditylenchus destructor via PDH-targeted multi-pathway synergistic mechanism

Yaofeng He,Zhengyang Shi,Xiaokang Liu,Juan Du,Guoqiang Zhang

Plant-parasitic nematodes pose a severe threat to global agricultural production, creating an urgent demand for green and highly efficient nematicides. In this study, we investigated the nematicidal activity and underlying action mechanism of 4-(diethylamino)salicylaldehyde (DSA) against Ditylenchus destructor . DSA exhibited significant nematicidal activity with a 72 h LC₅₀ of 1.951 μg/mL. At 10 μg/mL, DSA completely inhibited nematode infection, comparable to fluopyram. DSA damaged the body wall, induced reactive oxygen species accumulation and lipid peroxidation, and inhibited antioxidant enzymes. Multi-omics analysis revealed that DSA disrupted glycolysis and the TCA cycle, suppressed pyruvate dehydrogenase activity, and reduced ATP levels. Molecular docking and site-directed mutagenesis confirmed that DSA directly targets the PDH E1α subunit via Arg93 and Tyr92. Notably, DSA showed low toxicity to mammals, birds, and silkworm, with only moderate toxicity to zebrafish. Collectively, this study reveals a PDH-targeted, multi-pathway synergistic nematicidal mechanism of DSA, providing a theoretical basis and a promising lead compound for green nematicide development.

Silica-encapsulated Co/BEA core–shell catalysts for PDH: Stabilizing tetrahedral Co2+ and inhibiting coke formation

Yirong Wang,Qin Sun,Junbo Li,Tiantian Liu,Xiaohua Li,Liangzhi Yu,Sen Wang,Prasert Reubroycharoen,Lizhi Wu,Yu Tang,Li Tan

Propylene is a key chemical. Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) over non-noble cobalt catalysts suffers rapid deactivation from sintering and coking. Herein, we report a core–shell catalyst (1.0Co/BEA@ x Si) with a mesoporous silica shell on Co-impregnated dealuminated Beta zeolite. The silica shell enhances Co dispersion and modulates Co reduction: it promotes the formation of active tetrahedral Co 2+ sites from Co 3 O 4 while suppressing over-reduction to metallic Co 0 . The optimized 1.0Co/BEA@1.0Si maintains ~99% propylene selectivity and achieves a formation rate of 71.0 gC 3 H 6 ·g Co −1 ·h −1 after 980 min, far surpassing uncoated 1.0Co/BEA and most reported Co-based PDH catalysts. In situ and post-reaction analyses show the shell strengthens propane adsorption/activation and reduces coke formation. Core–shell engineering thus stabilizes active metal states via local redox microenvironment modulation, offering new design principles for robust alkane dehydrogenation catalysts.

Improved propylene selectivity and superior catalytic performance of Ga-xMg/ZSM-5 catalysts for propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction

Ge Yang,Xi Yan,Yan Chen,Xiao-Jing Guo,Wan-Zhong Lang,Ya-Jun Guo

In recent years, Ga-based catalysts attract much attention in propane dehydrogenation (PDH) reaction due to environmental friendliness and low cost. Nevertheless, it is still challenging to obtain high selectivity of propylene under harsh reaction conditions. In this work, the supported catalysts (Ga- x Mg/ZSM-5) were prepared with the sequential impregnation method and applied in the PDH reaction. The results show that MgO as an additive reduces the acidity of the catalysts, promotes the dispersion of Ga 2 O 3 and improves the selectivity of propylene. As a result, the average particle size of the Ga/ZSM-5 catalyst is larger (4.5 nm), and the initial propylene selectivity is only 71.0 %. In contrast, the optimal Ga-0.7Mg/ZSM-5 catalyst shows the smallest particle size (2.4 nm) and the highest propylene selectivity of 90.8 %. In comparison with the previous GaO x catalysts in literatures, the Ga-0.7Mg/ZSM-5 catalyst exhibits a superior production rate of propylene ( r C 3 H 6 ) based on either catalyst weight or Ga 2 O 3 weight.

Living Macrophage-Delivered Tetrapod PdH Nanoenzyme for Targeted Atherosclerosis Management by ROS Scavenging, Hydrogen Anti-inflammation, and Autophagy Activation

Ruizhi Hu,Chen Dai,Caihong Dong,Li Ding,Hui Huang,Yu Chen,Bo Zhang

Atherosclerosis, driven by chronic inflammation in the artery walls, underlies several severe cardiovascular diseases. However, currently available anti-inflammatory-based strategies for atherosclerosis treatment suffer from compromised therapeutic efficacy and undesirable therapeutic outcome. Herein, a distinct tetrapod needle-like PdH nanozyme was designed and engineered for efficient atherosclerosis treatment by the combinatorial reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging, hydrogen anti-inflammation, and autophagy activation. After loading into macrophages and targeted delivery to arterial plaques, these multifunctional nanozymes efficiently decreased the ROS levels and significantly suppressed the inflammation-related pathological process, exerting the distinct antioxidation and anti-inflammatory performance for alleviating atherosclerosis development. Especially and importantly, the specific spiky morphology of the PdH nanoenzyme further triggered a strong autophagy response in macrophages, synergistically maintaining the cellular homeostasis and alleviating atherosclerosis development. Both in vitro and in vivo results confirmed the synergy among the antioxidation, anti-inflammatory, and autophagy activation, suggesting that the combinatorial engineering of nanomedicines with intrinsic multiple therapeutic functions and topology-induced biological effects is highly preferable and effective for achieving the high therapeutic performance and desirable therapeutic outcome on atherosclerosis management and therapy.

Antifungal Activity and Mechanism of Camphor Derivatives against Rhizoctonia solani: A Promising Alternative Antifungal Agent for Rice Sheath Blight

Li Zhang,Yizhong Huang,Xinying Duan,Hongyan Si,Hai Luo,Shangxing Chen,Liheng Liu,Haohua He,Zongde Wang,Shengliang Liao

Rice sheath blight, caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani, poses a significant threat to rice cultivation globally. This study aimed to investigate the potential mechanisms of action of camphor derivatives against R. solani. Compound 4o exhibited superior fungicidal activities in vitro (EC50 = 6.16 mg/L), and in vivo curative effects (77.5%) at 500 mg/L were significantly (P < 0.01) higher than the positive control validamycin·bacillus (66.1%). Additionally, compound 4o exhibited low cytotoxicity and acute oral toxicity for adult worker honeybees of Apis mellifera L. Mechanistically, compound 4o disrupted mycelial morphology and microstructure, increased cell membrane permeability, and inhibited both PDH and SDH enzyme activities. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics analyses indicated a tight interaction of compound 4o with PDH and SDH active sites. In summary, compound 4o exhibited substantial antifungal efficacy against R. solani, serving as a promising lead compound for further optimization of antifungal agents.

Preparation and evaluation of an active modified oxygen/ carbon dioxide preservative for packaged fresh-cut durian

Guang Wu,Shuangdi Hou,Qingchun Yin,Li Guo,Hao Deng

In this study, a series of chitosan/copper nanocomposites (CS/Cu-NCs) served as catalyzers for VC to remove O 2 in food packages were successfully synthesized, characterized, and further utilized to prepare an active modified O 2 /CO 2 preservative. Transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet-visible, and infrared spectra confirmed CS/Cu-NCs #1–3 were successfully synthesized. Three components of the preservative were optimized, and the best formulation was: CS/Cu-NCs #2: VC: NaHCO 3 =0.5:1.5:0.15. It maintained relatively stable O 2 /CO 2 in the package at 10℃. Fresh-cut durian treated with 0 g (CK), 1.15 g (T1), 2.3 g (T2), and 3.45 g (T3) preservatives were stored at 10℃. Results showed that T1 group exhibited significantly ( P <0.05) higher firmness and VC content compared with CK at 12 d, indicating the best qualities. Key respiratory enzyme analyses verified that decreasing SDH, increasing G-6-PDH and 6-PGDH contributed mostly to the superior qualities of T1 group. This study could provide a prospective solution for packaged fresh-cut durian.

Potassium-promoted Pt–In bimetallic clusters encapsulated in silicalite-1 zeolite for efficient propane dehydrogenation

Jie Zhou,Hao Liu,Chao Xiong,Peng Hu,Hao Wang,Xuyu Wang,Hongbing Ji

Propane dehydrogenation (PDH) has been a promising method to satisfy the increasing demand for propylene, but Pt-based catalysts always suffer from sintering and coke formation. Developing stable and efficient catalysts for PDH is of great significance for the industry. Herein, the paper reports that a catalyst with potassium-promoted Pt-In bimetallic clusters encapsulated in silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite works as an efficient and stable catalyst for PDH. The catalyst achieves a propane conversion of 43.73 % with 97.14 % selectivity of propene and an extremely high propylene productivity of 20.33 mol g Pt -1 h -1 with a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 6.75 h −1 . No obvious deactivation occurs after 48 h on stream, affording an extremely low deactivation constant of 0.0025 h −1 . The introduction of indium species greatly improves the propene selectivity and restricts the coke formation. The introduction of K + into S-1 can significantly enhance the catalytic activity and the stability of the catalyst. The catalyst with excellent activity and stability is potential for industrial application.

Computational Screening and Experimental Synthesis of Doped TiO2 for Propane Dehydrogenation

Weiyu Song,Kuichao Yu,Xiangyang Ji,Bowen Liu,Zhi Li,Yanjun Chen,Jian Liu

Low-cost, environmentally friendly, and highly efficient catalysts are urgently needed for the direct propane dehydrogenation (PDH) to propylene. Studies have shown that defective TiO2 obtained by in situ reduction shows excellent catalytic PDH performance. Doping metals in the lattice of TiO2 is a plausible method for tuning the vacancy content and electronic property. In this paper, doping with fifth period transition metals was screened using a computational method, followed by experimental synthesis to further improve the PDH activity of TiO2-based catalysts. The TiO2 (101) surface with doping metals was first studied to determine the positive effect on the vacancy formation. Then, the two disputed reaction paths, that is, the concerted and stepwise path, were compared extensively on all of the doping models. Step one is found to be more preferable for all. The microkinetic modeling was employed to obtain the turnover frequency (TOF), based on which the linear relationship is found for TOF and binding energy of dissociated H2 or co-adsorption energy of 2-propyl&H. The abovementioned screening process shows Ru-doped TiO2, which shows the highest PDH activity and is justified by experimental results.

Highly efficient and stable hydrogen permeable membrane reactor for propane dehydrogenation

Zhixu Gan,Nikita Dewangan,Zhigang Wang,Shaomin Liu,Xiaoyao Tan,Sibudjing Kawi

The synthesis of SAPO-34 hollow fiber membranes employs the ball-milling assistant method to enhance membrane yield and quality. These membranes are then combined with CrO x /Al 2 O 3 catalyst to create a packed bed membrane reactor (PBMR) for propane dehydrogenation (PDH). The study investigates the impact of operating temperatures, weight hourly space velocities (WHSV), and sweep gas flow rates on the SAPO-34 zeolite membrane reactor's performance, comparing it to a traditional packed bed reactor (PBR). The removal of hydrogen from the reaction side significantly improves propane conversion, surpassing thermodynamic equilibrium. In PBMR, propylene selectivity slightly exceeds that in PBR, influenced by side reactions like hydrogenolysis and cracking after hydrogen removal. Furthermore, the SAPO-34 zeolite membrane reactor undergoes a prolonged stability test with frequent regeneration using pure propane as feedstock to simulate industrial conditions. It exhibits consistent performance over 120 regeneration cycles within 240 h, maintaining similar H 2 permeability and H 2 /C 3 H 8 selectivity as the fresh membrane post long-term testing.
