Considering that ultraviolet light may cause the denaturation of biomaterials, searching for and engineering innovative and advanced nanomaterials with excellent photoelectrochemical properties under visible light illumination are of great significance in the fundamental understanding and application of photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors. As a widely applied visible light response material, the applications of Bi2WO6 in PEC fields were restricted because of the rapid recombination of photoinduced electron–hole pairs. In this work, Bi2WO6 functionalized reduced oxide (Bi2WO6–rGO) nanocomposites (NCs) were prepared by a one-step solvothermal method. After optimizing the content of rGO, the Bi2WO6–rGO2.94% NCs displayed enhanced photocurrent intensity (the starting mass ratios of GO to Bi2WO6 = 0.0294), which was nearly 2.7-fold compared to that of pure Bi2WO6 nanoparticles because of the separation of the photoinduced carriers and the enhancement of visible light absorption. Based on the coupling of Pb2+-induced allosteric transition of G-quadruplex DNAzyme and the enzymatic biocatalytic precipitation (BCP), Bi2WO6–rGO2.94% NCs were applied in the construction of a novel PEC sensor for the determination of Pb2+. The as-fabricated PEC sensor exhibited good anti-interference ability and a good linear relationship was obtained between the photocurrent intensity and the logarithm of the Pb2+ concentration over a concentration range from 0.01 to 50 μM and with a detection limit of 3.3 nM (S/N = 3), indicating that Bi2WO6–rGO NCs would be promising materials for PEC sensing.

Designing a simple and sensitive photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is crucial to addressing the limitations of routine analytical methods. The sensitivity of the PEC sensor, however, relies on the photoelectric material used. In this manuscript, composites of MoS2/rGO (MG) with a large area and layered structure are prepared by simple steps. This material exhibits sensitivity to visible light and demonstrates outstanding photoelectric conversion performance. The constructed PEC aptasensor using this material to detect aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) shows significantly higher sensitivity and stability compared to similar sensors. This may be attributed to the presence of surface defects in MoS2, which provide more active sites for photocatalysis. Additionally, graphene oxide (GO) is reduced to rGO by thiourea and forms a heterojunction with MoS2, enhancing charge carrier separation and interfacial electron transfer. Our research has revealed that the photocurrent intensity of the aptamer electrode decreases with an increase in AFB1 concentration, resulting in a “signal-off” PEC aptasensor. The detection limit of this aptasensor is 2.18 pg mL−1, with a linear range of 0.001 to 100 ng mL−1. This result will also provide a reference for the study of other mycotoxins in food.

A rapid photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was constructed for nitrite detection in food based on the one-step chemical etching strategy of BiOCl/Zn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S (BOC/ZCS) nanocomposites by nitrite. BOC/ZCS heterojunction was prepared by a simple coprecipitation method, and it was found that BOC/ZCS showed significant photoelectrochemical (PEC) activity. The results of this study confirmed that the decrease in the photocurrent of the sensor was linked to the etching of ZCS by nitrite under acidic conditions. Under optimized conditions, the BOC/ZCS-based PEC sensor showed good analytical properties for detecting nitrite, with linear ranges of 1–100 μM and 100–600 μM. The detection limit of the sensor was 0.41 μM (S/N = 3). Excellent repeatability, reproducibility, low background noise, and immunity to interference were demonstrated using the proposed system, and satisfactory results were achieved for the nitrite assay using real samples. These results demonstrate a new method for nitrite detection developed using the proposed PEC sensor.

A simple homogeneous photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensing platform based on an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)–mediated pesticide assay was established for the sensitive detection of omethoate (OM). The Bi 2 S 3 @Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction was used as a photoactive material to provide stable background photocurrent signals. The inhibition of OM on ALP and PEC determination was carried out in the homogeneous system. In the absence of OM, dephosphorylation of L-ascorbic acid 2-phosphate trisodium salt (AAP) was catalyzed by ALP to produce the enzyme-catalyzed product (L-ascorbic acid, AA). AA, as an electron donor, could capture photogenerated holes on the Bi 2 S 3 @Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction, thus inhibiting the recombination of electron holes to achieve an increase of the photocurrent signal. When the OM was introduced, the enzyme activity of ALP was reduced due to the organophosphorus pesticides (OPs)–based enzyme inhibition, and the AA produced by catalytic hydrolysis was also reduced, thus reducing the photocurrent signal. Compared with the traditional PEC sensor for OPs, this homogeneous PEC sensor avoided immobilization procedures, covalent labeling, separation, and the steric hindrance effect caused by immobilized biomolecules, which achieved high recognition efficiency and caused a reduction in analysis time. Additionally, an ALP-mediated pesticide assay for the determination of OPs with a simplified experimental process further improved the stability and reproducibility of the PEC sensor. The PEC sensor showed high sensitivity to the target OM within a dynamic range of 0.05 ~ 500 ng mL −1 , and the detection limit was 0.0146 ng mL −1 . Additionally, the PEC biosensing system showed good selectivity and anti-interference ability, and exhibited a satisfactory result in spinach and mustard samples. Graphical abstract A homogeneous PEC biosensor based on ALP inhibition strategy was constructed for OM detection in vegetable samples via Bi 2 S 3 @Bi 2 Sn 2 O 7 heterojunction as the photoactive substrate material
