A low-work-function, high-conductivity PEDOT:PSS electrode for organic solar cells with a simple structure

Zaifang Li,Ying Liang,Zhicheng Zhong,Jingyu Qian,Guijie Liang,Kun Zhao,Haixin Shi,Shuming Zhong,Yanzhen Yin,Wenjing Tian

We report on a low work-function (WF), high-conductivity poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrode by a two-step dipping process. The first dipping into the sulfuric acid is to enhance its conductivity and the second dipping into PEI solution is to lower its work function. After the first dipping, the conductivity of PEDOT:PSS film reaches 1561   S/cm under dipping time of 1   min and the temperature of 60   °C. After dipping into sulfuric acid, the thickness of PEDOT:PSS is reduced to about half but the transmittance was lowered. After the dipping into the PEI solution, the WF of PEDOT:PSS is reduced from 4.9 to 4.0   eV. Although the conductivity were lowered slightly after treated with PEI solution, an electrode with a high conductivity of 1140   S/cm was achieved. The low WF and high-conductivity PEDOT:PSS film is used to fabricate ITO-free, metal-electrode-free and vacuum-free organic solar cells with a simple structure of glass/low-WF PEDOT:PSS/P3HT:ICBA/high WF-PEDOT:PSS, the cells display a fill factor of 61% and a power conversion efficiency of 4.0% under 100   mW/cm 2 white light illumination.

Unravelling the Electrical Field Induced Ion Migration in Flexible OLEDs with PEDOT:PSS Electrodes

Chenxi Liu,Mengze Li,Yifan Wang,Zijie Hou,Jian Chen,Kun Cao,Lihui Liu,Shufen Chen

The development of flexible organic light-emitting didoes (FOLEDs) has spurred the research on flexible transparent electrodes (FTEs). Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) is one of the most attractive FTEs due to its adjustable conductivity and compatibility with low-cost and large-scale solution processing techniques. Significantly, highly efficient FOLEDs have been achieved with modified PEDOT:PSS FTEs. However, the intrinsic mechanisms that contribute to device degradation of FOLEDs utilizing PEDOT:PSS FTEs have not yet been fully elucidated. In this work, three ionic liquids (ILs) are used to enhance the electrical conductivity and mechanical flexibility of PEDOT:PSS FTEs. Simultaneously, the influence of the electric field induced ion migration from PEDOT:PSS FTEs on the operational stability of FOLEDs is unraveled. We find that the ILs with larger ionic radii and higher steric hindrance are beneficial to suppressing the electrical field induced ion migration and improving the operational stability of FOLEDs. Finally, large-area and high-performance FOLEDs are achieved based on the IL of 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide modified PEDOT:PSS FTEs, which demonstrate a high current efficiency of 98.1 cd/A and a longer lifetime of 66.7 min. This finding may promote the practical application of PEDOT:PSS FTEs in flexible optoelectronics.

Surface modification of paper substrates by a printed UV curing varnish layer and a transferred transparent PEDOT:PSS electrode for paper-based perovskite light-emitting devices in ambient air

Guodong Liu,Zhongming Song,Xiuan Gao,Yinfeng Wang,Zhijian Li

Paper, a low-cost and eco-friendly substrate, can be used to prepare flexible electronic devices by resorting to surface modification technology. In this study, we investigated the surface modification of paper substrates, including those that were uncoated or coated with traditional mineral coatings , to analyze the enhancements to surface flatness and water resistance using a UV curing varnish layer. Furthermore, we explored the formation of perovskite films on the surface-modified paper substrates utilizing a PEO-doped perovskite precursor solution in ambient air, and the surface morphology , crystallinity , photoluminescence properties, and absorption properties of the prepared perovskite films were discussed accordingly. Considering the nontransparent feature of paper-based substrates, the inverted perovskite light-emitting device was finally assembled by transfer printing a transparent PEDOT:PSS layer as a top electrode. The conductive and optical properties of the electrode layer were thus analyzed as well. It is found that the surface modification of paper substrates via printing the UV curing varnish can illustrate significant improvements, such as pore-filling on the surface, a more than 10-fold reduction in roughness, and downward penetration. Moreover, prepared perovskite films on the surface-modified coated paper exhibit superior enhancements, including photoluminescence, higher crystallinity, and surface roughness and porosity. Devices fabricated on the surface-modified substrates are less susceptible to short-circuiting. The electroluminescence on the surface-modified coated paper substrate is 2.16 times higher than the prepared device on the surface-modified base paper substrate and even 3.23 times higher than on the PET substrate. Therefore, it is quite feasible to fabricate a perovskite light-emitting device on the modified surface of a paper substrate by using a printed UV curing varnish layer, which is expected to be a promising coating to polish the paper surface in the preparation of electroluminescent devices.

TCO-free quantum dot light-emitting diodes based on PEDOT:PSS electrode treated with mild acid

Zenan Zhang,Haotian Gu,Tenglong Sun,Yongfeng Liu,Muzhi Cai,Junjie Si,Gongxun Bai,Laurent Calvez,Shiqing Xu

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT: PSS) has emerged as a promising candidate for high-cost transparent conductive oxide (TCO) electrodes. However, achieving high conductivity in PEDOT:PSS typically requires treatment with strong acids, which presents inherent risks. In this study, we propose an alternative approach utilizing a mild methane sulfonic acid (MSA) treatment for PEDOT:PSS as a transparent conductive electrode (TCE). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses unveil heightened phase separation between PEDOT and PSS by MSA treatment, accompanied by structural modifications in PEDOT. Moreover, the interfacial morphology between the MSA-treated electrode and the hole injection layer underwent significant changes. It is precisely this improved interface morphology, combined with enhanced conductivity, that significantly improves the efficiency of the obtained TCO-free blue quantum dot light-emitting diode (QLED) by 300 % compared to the reference device. Finally, leveraging the high performance of the TCO-free blue QLEDs, we fabricate the above device on a yellow-emissive phosphors-in-glass substrate, enabling a white light-emitting LED (WLED) device. This experiment not only elucidates the structural changes in PEDOT:PSS under mild acid treatment but also introduces an innovative strategy for developing high-performance PEDOT:PSS electrodes.

High-Efficiency Stable Flexible Organic Solar Cells with PEDOT:PSS Electrodes via Superacid Fumigation Treatment

Rongjiang Wen,Huihui Huang,Juanyong Wan,Shuangchun Wen,Jinzhao Wang,Xi Fan

Strong acid treatment is regarded as the most effective approach to increase the electrical conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) electrodes. However, the conventional soaking treatments of strong acids have drawbacks, including limited flexibility of PEDOT:PSS electrodes coated on thermoplastic underlying substrates, high preparation cost with large acid consumption, and moderate stability of flexible organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a unique and cost-effective fumigation treatment using trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (CF 3 SO 3 H) vapors is proposed. The CF 3 SO 3 H fumigation treatment leads to a highly conductive, smooth, homogeneous, and flexible PEDOT:PSS electrode. On the basis of the CF 3 SO 3 H-fumigated PEDOT:PSS electrodes, the inverted flexible OSCs yield a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.62%. Moreover, the flexible solar cells maintain most (≈91%) of the initial efficiency in long-term storage. This work provides a novel route to make solution-processed flexible OSCs simultaneously have a high PCE and good storage stability.

Performance Enhancement of Self-Powered Electrochromic Device via a PEDOT:PSS Electrode Inherited with Intrinsic Roughness of Substrate

Mengxin Tao,Guodong Liu,Yaoli Wang,Jianing Wang,Wenliang Zhang,Zhijian Li

The electrode optimization and rational design are of great significance for the performance enhancement of self-powered electrochromic devices (ECDs). It can be effectively enhanced by developing interfacial properties of electrodes, which can promote the internal ion transport within functional components consisting of an electrode, electrochromic layer, and electrolyte layer and thus obtain performance improvement of fabricated devices. This work aims to construct the electrode of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) on different substrates and promote interface performance of the prepared electrodes via inheriting the surface topography of substrates. Besides, the prepared PEDOT:PSS electrodes as a dual-function layer including the electrochromic and electrode layer are employed to assemble the ECDs. It is found that the intrinsic roughness of the paper substrate can facilitate the electrochemical performance of the prepared PEDOT:PSS electrode on it effectively, thereby showing a superior electrochemical surface area and diffusion coefficient as well as a lower charge-transfer resistance of 13.56 Ω. Similarly, for the prepared self-powered ECD on the paper substrate, it also indicates a high light absorption property (0.413), well-defined electrochromic contrast (33.09), fast switching (τc = 4.0 s, τb = 6.8 s), high coloration efficiency (92.275 cm2 C–1), high areal capacity (10.93 mAh m–2) at 0.01 mA cm–2, and lower equivalent series resistance (176.2 Ω) in comparison to parallel ECDs on the PET and glass substrate. Leveraging the intrinsic roughness of the substrate is able to enhance the electrochemical performance of electrodes, which can also provide a new strategy for the construction of high-performance self-powered ECDs.
