Tribological Behavior of Self-Lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti3SiC2 Composites Under Dry Sliding Friction

Yang Zhang,Qingsong Li,Xi Xie,Guoxin Sui

Most polymers and composites suffer from high friction and wear due to their inherent lack of self-lubrication under dry sliding friction. Herein, the lamellar Ti 3 SiC 2 MAX material is prepared via vacuum sintering of a powder mixture containing Ti, Si, and TiC in the molar ratio of 1:1.1:1.8 at 1500°C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 2 h. Combined with a soft graphite phase (5 wt%), self-lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti 3 SiC 2 (PG-T) composites are successfully prepared, dependent on Ti 3 SiC 2 (5 and 15 wt%) as a hard reinforced phase and lubrication additive. PG-T composites are fabricated via a multistep compounding approach using a twin-screw extruder. The incorporation of Ti 3 SiC 2 and graphite within the PEEK matrix manifests a highly pronounced synergistic effect, which not only facilitates effective lubrication but also significantly enhances the load-bearing capability, thereby effectively circumventing direct contact between the counterface and the polymeric matrix. The sliding tests are conducted on the pins (diameter: 6.0 mm, height: 17.0 mm) and friction pair (45#steel, roughness Ra: 148 nm) under dry friction. In terms of PV-condition (up to 6 MPa and 3 m/s) (PV is a parameter that reflects the load-bearing capacity of polymer materials, which is defined by multi-plying the pressure P by the sliding speed V), PG5-T15 exhibits self-lubricating properties, featured by an average coefficient of friction (ACOF) as low as 0.119 for the pin-plate test and a specific wear rate (SWR) of only 0.58 × 10 −6 mm 3 /Nm. Meanwhile, PG-T composites present excellent thermal properties based on the thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) and storage moduli (G′) during friction and wear. Considering the practical applications of tribo-composites, these findings highlight the potential of PG-T composite as a candidate for demanding tribological applications.

Genistein loaded into microporous surface of nano tantalum/PEEK composite with antibacterial effect regulating cellular response in vitro, and promoting osseointegration in vivo

Shulin Luo,Pei Wang,Min Ma,Zhangyi Pan,Liangyu Lu,Feng Yin,Junfeng Cai

Poly(ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) with good biocompatibility exhibits high mechanical strengths but bioinert. In addition, tantalum (Ta) possesses outstanding osteogenesis but high density and elastic modulus , and cost. In this study, by blending Ta nanoparticles with PEEK, Ta/PEEK composite (TP) was prepared, which was then treated by concentrated sulfuric acid to form a microporous surface containing Ta particles on TP (TPS). Moreover, genistein (GS) with antibacterial property was loaded into the microporous surface of TPS (TPSG). Compared with TP, the surface properties ( e.g., surface roughness and hydrophilicity) of TPS was obviously improved because of the microporous surface including Ta nanoparticles . Moreover, TPS showed low antibacterial properties because of presence of sulfonic group while TPSG exhibited excellent antibacterial properties due to GS loaded into the microporous surface. Furthermore, compared with TP, TPS obviously promoted attachment and proliferation of MG63 cells, while TPSG with GS remarkably inducing osteogenic differentiation of the cells compared with TPS in vitro . Moreover, in comparison with TP, TPS with optimized surface properties promoted new bone regeneration and osseointegration, while TPSG loading GS further enhanced bone regeneration as well as osseointegration in vi vo. In summary, the GS loaded into microporous surface including Ta nanoparticles of TPSG exhibited antibacterial and osteogenic activity, which would have great potential for bone tissue repair.

Si3N4@SiO2/PEEK core-shell structure ceramic matrix composite prepared by cold sintering and its tribological properties

Dapeng Gu,Guanqun Wang,Suwen Chen,Hongtao Luo,Xiaofan Chen,Ziyu Liu

The traditional high-temperature sintering method cannot achieve the combination of ceramics and polymers for the huge sintering temperature difference. The insufficient interfacial bonding strength of the ceramic matrix is the difficulty in the low-temperature preparation of ceramic-polymer composites. To improve the interfacial bonding strength of Si 3 N 4 (Silicon nitride) ceramic matrix composite, an easy-bonding SiO 2 (Silica) shell was introduced onto the surface of the hard-bonding Si 3 N 4 core by Stober method, to obtain Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 composite. Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) composites were prepared by the cold sintering process (500 MPa, 240 °C, and transient liquid phase is NaOH solution). The dry tribological properties of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composites with different PEEK percentages were studied by a ball-disc contact form. It is shown that an amorphous SiO 2 shell with a thickness of 25 nm is chemically bonded onto the surface of the Si 3 N 4 core. The presence of the SiO 2 shell improves the interface bonding strength between Si 3 N 4 ceramic particles. The friction coefficients of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composites decrease with the increase of PEEK percentage. Compared with Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 composite, the friction coefficient and wear rate of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /50 vol% PEEK composite decrease by about 40% and 26%, respectively. The main wear forms of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composites are abrasive wear and adhesive wear. A mixed lubrication layer, mainly including PEEK, Si 3 N 4 , and SiO 2 , exists simultaneously on the surfaces of Si 3 N 4 @SiO 2 /PEEK composite and the counterpart ball, respectively, playing the role of reducing friction and wear.

Functional and structural construction of photothermal-responsive PEEK composite implants to promote bone regeneration and bone-implant integration

Wenchao Li,Zhengnan Su,Yanru Hu,Lihui Meng,Fang Zhu,Bin Xie,Zilin Zhou,Shuojie Cui,Meng Wang,Qingzhi Wu,Shun Yao

Although poly (ether-ether-ketone) (PEEK) has been widely used in orthopedic surgeries, its clinical efficacy is challenged by ineffective bone regeneration and insufficient osteointegration. Herein, inspired by the Mortise-and-tenon joint in traditional Chinese architectural art, a novel strategy has been developed to construct photothermal-responsive PEEK composite implants, with tapered lock-groove edges as proof of concept, by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) loaded with polydopamine-coated nano-zirconia (PDA@ZrO 2 ) into PEEK (namely PGPZ composite). The PGPZ composite exhibits improved mechanical properties, good cytocompatibility and blood compatibility, excellent antibacterial ability and osteogenic activity remotely controlled by near-infrared irradiation (NIR). The cranial defects experiment on rabbits reveals that repeated NIR treatment on PGPZ composite implant significantly accelerates endogenous bone regeneration. More importantly, abundant newly-formed bone has materialized in the lock grooves, forming interlocked Mortise-and-tenon joints with the implant. This study not only pave the way for further clinical applications of the PEEK composite implants with improved bioactivities to promote bone regeneration and osteointegration, but also providing a novel strategy for structural and functional design of various tissue engineering implants.

The effect of micron-graphite particle size on the mechanical and tribological properties of PEEK Composites

Yingshuang Shang,Yunping Zhao,Yifan Liu,Ye Zhu,Zhenhua Jiang,Haibo Zhang

The poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/graphite composites with good tribological performance were studied. When compared with pure PEEK, the PEEK/graphite composites exhibited a lower frictional coefficient, which was attributed to the layer structure of graphite, which can be easily separated or slide past each other. Considerations were given to both the coefficient of friction and wear rate, and the PEEK/graphite composites showed the optimal tribological behavior when the graphite content was at 25 wt%. This proportion was chosen to investigate the effect of micron-graphite particle size on mechanical and tribological properties of the PEEK/graphite composites. The wear rate of the PEEK composites significantly decreased when the particle size of micron-graphite decreased. Moreover, the results showed that the wear rate had a strong dependence on the mechanical properties of the PEEK composites at the same graphite content level.

Bio-based semi-aromatic waterborne PIEK-C sizing agent to construct a robust interface for CF/PEEK composites

Yujia Xie,Hailin Zhuang,Weibing Pei,Jiaming Guo,Yan Ma,Lingqiang Kong,Yuhui Ao,Liu Liu,Yu Liu

Despite the impressing advances on sizing agents for CF/PEEK composites, the aromatic backbone of the polymer precursors utilized in the vast majority of reports compromises the dispersity and ductility of the slurry, subsequently resulting in inferior overall performance of the composites. Meanwhile, most resins employed for sizing agents in existing reports are based on petroleum resources. Herein, a bio-based waterborne sizing agent utilizing semi-aromatic poly ether ketones (PIEK-C) derived from isosorbide and phenolphthalein has been disclosed, featured by its salutary dispersity, exceptional thermal stability, higher glass transition temperatures, and broader applicability. Due to the structural similarity between the sizing and resin matrix, the protocol endowed CF/PEEK composites with ameliorated overall performance, addressing issues related to inadequate adhesion of CF with PEEK resin, as well as environmental pollution commonly associated with existing commercial epoxy and solvent-based sizing agents. The T g and T 5% of PIEK-C-5050 were 205.08 and 427.16°C, respectively. The particle size range of the PIEK-C sizing agents spanned from 66.32 to 84.63 nm. The flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength of the composites experienced a respective 993.92 MPa (30.73%) and 83.32 MPa (36.97%) increase compared to untreated CF/PEEK composites following sizing treatment with PIEK-C-5050, underscoring expedient intermolecular interactions based on comparable solubility and π-π stacking effects between the PEEK and PIEK-C components. This study introduced an efficient and eco-friendly approach to enhance the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites. Highlights PIEK-C resin is employed for the first time to prepare carbon fiber sizing agents. The PIEK-C sizing agent significantly fortified the surface energy and wettability of carbon fibers. The CF/PEEK composites after treatment with PIEK-C sizing agent showed excellent heat resistance. The ILSS and bending strength of the composites were significantly increased by 36.97% and 30.73%, respectively.

High Thermally Conductive and Electrical Insulating “Sandwich” Structured Composites Fabricated by Hot-pressing of PEEK Film Combined with fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK Membrane via Electrospinning

Fan Yang,Xiunan Li,Ye Sun,Wanying Yang,Dong Jiang,Jianxin Mu,Guibin Wang,Yanhua Yang

With the rapid development of 5   G technology, the heat dissipation of electronic devices has become an important challenge. It is particularly essential to construct efficient thermal transfer networks in order to obtain advanced materials with superior thermal conductivity as well as excellent electrical insulating properties. In this work, poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) was sulfonated to achieve its solubility for electrospinning. Multi-scale hybrid fillers containing hydroxylated boron nitride nanosheets (fBNNSs) and carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (fMWCNT) are aligned along the direction of sulfonated PEEK (SPEEK) fibers during electrospinning process where fMWCNT with high aspect ratio can be used as mediators to connect the dispersed fBNNSs resulting in synergistic effect to extensively improve the thermally conductive performance. The hydrogen bond interaction among sulfonic acid group, carboxy groups and hydroxy groups from the matrix and modified fillers can not only make the fillers disperse uniformly but also improve the interfacial properties, thus reducing the phonon scattering at the interface efficiently, to enhance the thermal conductivity significantly at relatively low filler loading. fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK composite exhibits excellent thermal conductivity (λ) of 5.25   W/(m·K) when the filler content reached by 26   wt% with the ratio of fBNNSs to fMWCNT of 25:1(wt:wt). Under the composition above, the excellent electrical insulating property (2.54×10 15 Ω·cm) is achieved as well. Furthermore, fBNNSs@fMWCNT/SPEEK fiber membrane can be used as thermally conductive filler to construct a "sandwich" structured composite with PEEK film. When the mass ratio is 1:1, the λ of composite is 3.1   W/(m·K), which is 1200% higher than that of PEEK. This work provides better understanding of PEEK based thermal conductive composites for the prospective application of thermal management materials in electrical insulating related fields.

Preparation of semi-aliphatic polyimide for organic-solvent-free sizing agent in CF/PEEK composites

Chengce Yuan,Dazhi Li,Xueyu Yuan,Li Liu,Yudong Huang

The inert structure and high molding temperature of thermoplastic resin bring new challenges to carbon fiber (CF) sizing agents. Herein, an easily purified semi-aliphatic polyimide (SA-PI) was synthesized as CF sizing agent. The SA-PI has no significant decomposition before 300 °C and a 5% decomposition temperature of 442 °C. Based on the solubility of its polyamic acid ammonium salt, the SA-PI is configured as an aqueous solution for CF sizing. The results show the surface of sized carbon fiber (SCF) is covered with a sizing coating. At the same time, the polar group of the sizing coating increases the surface energy by 28.45%. Compared with bare CF, the tensile strength of SCF is increased by 11.43%, the ILSS and flexural strength of SCF/PEEK increased from 55.71 MPa and 485.34 MPa to68.98 MPa and 523.33 MPa, respectively. In addition, the micro-morphology at the fracture of the composite clearly proves that the sizing agent improves the interface performance of the composites effectively.

Significantly anisotropic thermal conductivity improvement of PEEK composites with EMI shielding effectiveness

Rui Chen,Yuxuan Gu,Yageng Bai,Shilong Zhong,Haiyang Chang,Cheng Wang,Jianxin Mu,Xudong Chen

The demand for polymeric composite materials with multifaceted performance has increased with rapid advancements in various sectors such as energy storage, 5G technology and electronic thermal management. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a thermoplastic polymer with superior mechanical properties, solvent resistance and thermal stability, is an ideal substrate for composite materials. However, traditional filler-reinforced PEEK composites often struggle to achieve the desired thermal conductivity due to filler agglomeration resulting in high interfacial thermal resistance (ITR). To address these issues, laminated (NH 2 -GnPs&MWCNTs)/PEEK composite films were fabricated by electrostatic spraying technique and hot pressing process, with hybrid fillers that interconnected to form a compact heat-conducting network. Amino-functionalised graphene was also incorporated, which enhanced the interfacial compatibility and reduced the ITR of composites. At a filler content of only 14.97 vol%, the in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of (NH 2 -GnPs&MWCNTs)/PEEK composite films reached 4.05 and 2.05 W m −1  K −1 , respectively, by factors of 17.6 and 8.9 over pure PEEK matrix with a thermal conductivity of 0.23 W m −1  K −1 . The Agari and Foygel models demonsrated that the composites formed an efficient three-dimensional conduction network and exhibited a reduced ITR. It is confirmed that the strategically synergistic fillers and electrostatic spraying laminated structure form a highly interconnected three-dimensional conduction network with some degree of orientation, thereby mitigating the interface scattering and increasing the mean free range of phonons. In addition, the composites displayed excellent electromagnetic interference-shielding capabilities and thermal stability, positioning them as dual-functional thermal management materials with significant application potential.

Synergy of electrochemical grafting and crosslinkable crystalline sizing agent to enhance the interfacial strength of carbon fiber/PEEK composites

Shengdao Wang,Yanchao Yang,Yongfeng Mu,Jiyao Shi,Xin Cong,Jiashuang Luan,Guibin Wang

Carbon fiber/PEEK composites have gained significant attention in the field of continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs). However, it remains challenging to improve the weak interfacial strength between carbon fiber (CF) and PEEK matrix. In this paper, strong interactions at the interface of sizing agent and carbon fiber were effectively achieved by introducing chemical bonds. Specifically, a soluble PEEK sizing agent where aniline served as pendant group and phenylacetylene served as blocking agent was synthesized. In the meantime, the phenylacetylene group was grafted on the carbon fiber surface through electroreduction . Then, the soluble sizing agent was used to size the electrochemical treated carbon fiber. After the heat treatment, chemical bonds were established by the crosslinking reaction of phenylacetylene groups existed in both the surface of carbon fiber and sizing agent. Meanwhile, the crystalline structure in the sizing layer was remained, which could improve the toughness of the interphase. As a result, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) increased by 137.5% from 43.4 MPa of the untreated carbon fiber (U-CF) to 103.1 MPa of the reductive electrografted and coated carbon fiber (E-C-CF). The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) also increased by 66.8% from 58.4 MPa of untreated CF/PEEK composites (U-CF/PEEK) to 97.4 MPa of reductive electrografted and coated CF/PEEK composites (E-C-CF/PEEK). The outstanding performances could be attributed to better compatibility of sizing agent and most importantly, the existence of chemical bonds between the carbon fiber and sizing agent.

Superhydrophobicity and anti-icing of CF/PEEK composite surface with hierarchy structure

Pan Lei,Wang Fei,Pang Xiaofei,Zhang Lei,Hao Jianxiong

In this study, a durable, reusable, effective and large-area molding method was proposed to fabricate hierarchical structures on the CF/PEEK composite surface. The hierarchical structures were fabricated using a combination of sandblasting and anodizing treatments on the metal surface. Subsequently, a hot-pressing process was adopted for producing structures that matched the metal templates. The rough surface was modified by (Heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetradecyl)trimethoxysilane with low surface energy to obtain superhydrophobicity. Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to observe the surface morphologies and structure. The chemical composition and roughness were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy and the laser microscopy, respectively. Wettability was characterized through contact angle measuring instruments, and static and dynamic sliding contact angles were obtained to be 158.23° and 8.38°, respectively. After the abrasion test, the CF/PEEK composite surface still maintained reasonable mechanical stability. Comparing with the untreated sample, CF/PEEK superhydrophobic surface exhibited excellent anti-icing performance with freezing time increasing from 54 to 514 s at − 20° and icing adhesion strength reducing to 30.5 kPa. Although the fabrication of composite surface with water repellency presented here is useful for anti-icing, it can also be applied in other applications that require superhydrophobic surfaces.

PEEK composite resin with enhanced intumescent flame retardancy loaded with Octaphenylsilsesquioxane and nano calcium carbonate and its application in fibers

Xingyu Zhou,Rui Yu,Junhui Jiang,Junbo Dang,Jiashuang Luan,Guibin Wang,Mei Zhang

This study reported a novel strategy of introducing nano Calcium Carbonate (nCC) and Octaphenylsilsesquioxane (OPS) simultaneously into poly ether ether ketone (PEEK) as the intumescent flame retardants for the first time to address the melt flowage and drop in the fire. Good dispersion of nCC and OPS in the PEEK matrix was observed. The nanocomposites displayed lower thermal decomposition rate and higher residual chars compared with those of pristine PEEK. Cone calorimeter tests showed that the peak heat release rate, smoke production rate and the total smoke production of 5%OPS/5%nCC/PEEK decreased by 47.54%, 55.00% and 30.61%, respectively. Furthermore, the combustion mechanism of PEEK and its nanocomposite was investigated by TG-MS, which showed that nCC and OPS had a synergistic flame retardant effect. Finally, as an application verification, the PEEK nanocomposite fiber was prepared and its flame retardant properties were basically the same as the PEEK nanocomposite material, proving its huge application potential in high-performance flame retardant fabrics. This work is expected to pave the pathway about the novel eco-friendly flame retardancy and open a new avenue to develop PEEK nanocomposites.
