The weak interfacial bonding between fiber and matrix needs to be improved for obtaining good mechanical properties of carbon fiber/polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites due to the inert nature of both components. Organic sizing is a typical interface improvement method, but it is harmful to both the human and local environment. Here, a two-step process is proposed to modify PEEK for preparing an environmentally friendly water-based sizing agent, involving taking the ketone reduction via NaBH 4 and then an esterification reaction with phosphoric acid . This PEEK derivative has good thermal stability , and its dispersion in water is stable for one month. It improves the interface between CF and PEEK by increasing the wettability and surface roughness of CFs, ultimately enhancing the mechanical properties of composites. The two-step process of fabricating the PEEK derivative may have potentials in the industrial application of the polyaryletherketone family.

In this study, a series of soluble aminated polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK-NH 2 ) with good compatibility were designed. Novel water-based sizing agents were then prepared by emulsion/solvent evaporation method, which were selected as CF surface modifiers to improve the interfacial properties of CF/PEEK composites. TGA and DSC results showed that PEEK-NH 2 exhibit excellent thermal properties, and the T g was increased by up to 30.9 °C. The particle diameters of sizing agents range from 54.3 to 73.6 nm, and the contact angles of modified CF were significantly decreased. According to the interfacial properties results, PEEK–NH 2 –35 presented the most effective reinforcing effect, the interlaminar shear strength and flexural strength were increased by 43.1% and 62.2%, as compared to un-sized CF composites . Moreover, the interfacial strengthening mechanisms of sizing agent was investigated. The improved interfacial adhesion benefits from PEEK-NH 2 which performs as effective stress transfer bridge at the interface.

Increasing interest in 3D-printed high-performance polymers is observed due to their excellent mechanical properties and high resistance to chemical and thermal degradation. One of the ongoing challenges is to achieve sufficient joint strength because of the inertness of thermoplastics . In the current work, effects of surface treatment on shear bond strength of 3D-printed samples were focused and assessed. First, polyetherimide (PEI), polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and PEEK/CF(carbon fiber) as adherend were produced via FDM 3D printing . Then, sanding or atmospheric plasma treatments were carried out to improve the surface wettability of the 3D-printed specimens. Significantly, reduction in surface roughness was observed in sanding treated specimens, while nearly no change occurred in plasma-treated counterparts. However, surface free energy and wettability were greatly improved after plasma treatment. Single lap-shear tests and failure mode for PEI, PEEK and PEEK/CF using two different adhesives (film and liquid) were investigated, and the effect of surface treatment on bond strength was further compared. Results suggested that liquid adhesive contributed higher joint strength for surface-treated specimens in comparison to film adhesive . Besides, atmospheric plasma treatment is more efficient and safer method for 3D-printed PEEK and PEEK/CF, achieving a higher joining strength.

To investigate the influence of fabrication method on the biological properties of modified PEEK. Two materials were tested in this study: press and CAD/CAM milled ceramic-reinforced PEEK (BioHPP, Bredent, Germany). The residual diphenyl sulfone in these two materials was detected and their biological effects on human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) were evaluated by assaying cell viability, apoptosis, and inflammation. Diphenyl sulfone was not detected in press and milled BioHPP. The cell viability of them complied with ISO standards. The mRNA expression levels of Bax and Caspase-3 were up-regulated and that of Bcl-2 was downregulated when HGFs were cultured with the eluates of these two materials. There was no difference in cell viability, apoptosis, and inflammation between them. Hence, the fabrication method did not affect the biological properties of modified PEEK, the press and CAD/CAM milled modified PEEK all presented favorable cytocompatibility despite the expression of apoptosis-associated genes at the mRNA level.

Most polymers and composites suffer from high friction and wear due to their inherent lack of self-lubrication under dry sliding friction. Herein, the lamellar Ti 3 SiC 2 MAX material is prepared via vacuum sintering of a powder mixture containing Ti, Si, and TiC in the molar ratio of 1:1.1:1.8 at 1500°C under a pressure of 30 MPa for 2 h. Combined with a soft graphite phase (5 wt%), self-lubricating PEEK/Graphite/Ti 3 SiC 2 (PG-T) composites are successfully prepared, dependent on Ti 3 SiC 2 (5 and 15 wt%) as a hard reinforced phase and lubrication additive. PG-T composites are fabricated via a multistep compounding approach using a twin-screw extruder. The incorporation of Ti 3 SiC 2 and graphite within the PEEK matrix manifests a highly pronounced synergistic effect, which not only facilitates effective lubrication but also significantly enhances the load-bearing capability, thereby effectively circumventing direct contact between the counterface and the polymeric matrix. The sliding tests are conducted on the pins (diameter: 6.0 mm, height: 17.0 mm) and friction pair (45#steel, roughness Ra: 148 nm) under dry friction. In terms of PV-condition (up to 6 MPa and 3 m/s) (PV is a parameter that reflects the load-bearing capacity of polymer materials, which is defined by multi-plying the pressure P by the sliding speed V), PG5-T15 exhibits self-lubricating properties, featured by an average coefficient of friction (ACOF) as low as 0.119 for the pin-plate test and a specific wear rate (SWR) of only 0.58 × 10 −6 mm 3 /Nm. Meanwhile, PG-T composites present excellent thermal properties based on the thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) and storage moduli (G′) during friction and wear. Considering the practical applications of tribo-composites, these findings highlight the potential of PG-T composite as a candidate for demanding tribological applications.

Polyether ether ketone (PEEK) is esteemed as a high-performance engineering polymer renowned for its exceptional mechanical properties and thermal stability. Nonetheless, the majority of polymer-based lubricating materials fail to meet the contemporary industrial demands for motion components regarding high speed, heavy loading, temperature resistance, and precise control. Utilizing 3D printing technology to design and fabricate intricately structured components, developing high-performance polymer self-lubricating materials becomes imperative to fulfill the stringent operational requirements of motion mechanisms. This study introduces a novel approach employing 3D printing technology to produce PEEK with varying filling densities and conducting in situ synthesis of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanomaterials on its surface to enhance PEEK’s frictional performance. The research discusses the synthetic methodology, characterization techniques, and tribological performance evaluation of in situ synthesized ZIF-8 nanomaterials on PEEK surfaces. The findings demonstrate a significant enhancement in frictional performance of the composite material under low-load conditions, achieving a minimum wear rate of 4.68 × 10−6mm3/N·m compared to the non-grafted PEEK material’s wear rate of 1.091 × 10−5mm3/N·m, an approximately 1.3 times improvement. Detailed characterization and analysis of the worn surface of the steel ring unveil the lubrication mechanism of the ZIF-8 nanoparticles, thereby presenting new prospects for the diversified applications of PEEK.

PEEK resin is difficult to toughen because of its unique molecular structure. In this paper, polyether ketone ether ketone ketone (PEKEKK) which has a molecular chain structure similar to PEEK but higher melting point was used to toughen PEEK. Firstly, the soluble PEKEKK was synthesized and used to prepare nanospheres with uniform and controllable particle size through microemulsion method. Then, the PEKEKK nanospheres with crystallinity and good thermal stability were obtained by acidification . The nanospheres and nanocomposites were characterized by TGA , DSC , DMA , SEM, polarizing microscopy and Charpy impact test. Without extra compatibilizer or surface modification, the impact toughness of PEEK/PEKEKK nanocomposites (2.0 wt% nanospheres) improved to 6.63 kJ/m 2 with an increase of 47.33%, while not impairing the tensile and flexural properties. Moreover, the toughening mechanism of the PEKEKK nanospheres in PEEK resin were discussed. The strategy provides a novel solution for the toughening of PAEK with high strength .

The biocompatible high-performance material PEEK (polyetheretherketone) is an attractive implant material, however, its hydrophobicity and high friction coefficients severely hinder its biomedical applications . Thus, it is inferred from the recent advances in surface modification technology, achieving the biomimetic natural joint lubrication systems on PEEK still remains a challenge. In view of the above, herein we proposed a novel two-step strategy to fabricate a “soft (dual cross-linked hydrogel) layer-hard (PEEK) substrate” texture that mimics the structure and function of soft cartilage on the hard basal bone in joints. At first, a layer of acrylic acid-co-acryl amide (AA-AM) hydrogel is anchored to the PEEK substrate through UV-initiated polymerization. In the second step, hydrogel coated PEEK substrate is immersed in ferric nitrate solution to create the secondary cross-linkage between Fe 3+ and –COOH groups in the hydrogel. As a result, the consequential top-coat hydrogel layer not only transforms the surface wettability (hydrophobic to hydrophilic) but also provides scratch resistance to the underlying PEEK substrate. The modified specimens display low friction coefficients in water under different load conditions. In addition, the obtained surface exhibits a certain self-repairing ability due to its unique physically reversible network structure. Therefore, this work provides a promising strategy for broadening the use of PEEK in orthopedic implants .

Titanium alloys are studied for decades as bone and dental implants, showing great potential in biomedical applications. However, the relatively high stiffness and lack of resistance to bacterial corrosion in titanium-based implants are always a problem. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) is emerging significantly as a new biomaterial for tissue engineering scaffolds, due to its excellent biocompatibility and stability, while the mechanical properties of PEEK cannot match those of natural bones and teeth. In biomineralized tissues, the incorporation of bioceramics into the organic matrix provides a strategy to enhance the mechanical properties of polymers. Inspired by this process, the current work successfully prepared a composite coating on Ti-6Al-4 V (TC4) titanium alloy that contains both organic (PEEK) and inorganic silicon nitride (SiN x ) phases. Combining spin coating with physical vapor deposition methods, PEEK/SiN x composite coatings that resemble the hierarchical natural mineralized organic fibers are thus realized. The Young's modulus of the “mineralized” PEEK/SiN x fibers in the composite coatings reaches 45–65 GPa, comparable to the cortical bone and tooth enamel. The novel coatings exhibit superior wear and corrosion resistance. Because of the hierarchical porous structure, the affinity to simulated body fluid (SBF) is notably increased in TC4 coated with PEEK/SiN x . In vitro cell culture experiments (Alkaline phosphatase activity and qPCR tests, etc.) further verify the bioinspired composite coatings significantly improve cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation, potentially inspiring the development of new tissue-like orthopedic and dental implant materials.

Thermoplastic resins have contributed more and more to the field of fiber reinforced composites . The ability to fabricate fiber reinforced thermoplastic resin composites with excellent and functional interface performances has so far been elusive. Herein, we use a polyamide-imide (PAI)/Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene sizing to enhance the interfacial performance of CF reinforced polyetheretherketone (PEEK) composites. The composite sizing makes the composite with high interfacial adhesion and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performances. Our results indicate that traditional composite materials can improve performance and increase functionality through interface treatment.

Economic and efficient routes to achieve clean freshwater from oil-water mixtures and seawater have gained special attention to reduce the current water crisis, but still a challenge unsolved. Herein, poly (ether ether ketone) (PEEK) membrane, modified with MnO 2 layer, has been prepared by facile hydrothermal method to address this issue aforementioned. Given the existence of PEEK and underwater superoleophobicity/underoil superhydrophilicity of MnO 2 , the composite membrane exhibits strong mechanic properties (tensile stress: 110.2 MPa) and high separation efficiencies (99.9 %) for different oil–water mixtures under gravity. Additionally, our membrane could also effectively separate immiscible oil mixtures according to the dipole–dipole interaction. Furthermore, firm chemical stability against dichloromethane, N, N-Dimethylformamide, 1 M NaOH, 1 M HCl, and 1 M NaCl has been achieved. Most importantly, our membrane displays durable evaporation efficiency (2.63 kg m -2 h −1 ), high energy efficiency (85.9 %), and super salt tolerance under 1 sun irradiation, for solar-assisted seawater desalination.

The demand for polymeric composite materials with multifaceted performance has increased with rapid advancements in various sectors such as energy storage, 5G technology and electronic thermal management. Polyetheretherketone (PEEK), a thermoplastic polymer with superior mechanical properties, solvent resistance and thermal stability, is an ideal substrate for composite materials. However, traditional filler-reinforced PEEK composites often struggle to achieve the desired thermal conductivity due to filler agglomeration resulting in high interfacial thermal resistance (ITR). To address these issues, laminated (NH 2 -GnPs&MWCNTs)/PEEK composite films were fabricated by electrostatic spraying technique and hot pressing process, with hybrid fillers that interconnected to form a compact heat-conducting network. Amino-functionalised graphene was also incorporated, which enhanced the interfacial compatibility and reduced the ITR of composites. At a filler content of only 14.97 vol%, the in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of (NH 2 -GnPs&MWCNTs)/PEEK composite films reached 4.05 and 2.05 W m −1 K −1 , respectively, by factors of 17.6 and 8.9 over pure PEEK matrix with a thermal conductivity of 0.23 W m −1 K −1 . The Agari and Foygel models demonsrated that the composites formed an efficient three-dimensional conduction network and exhibited a reduced ITR. It is confirmed that the strategically synergistic fillers and electrostatic spraying laminated structure form a highly interconnected three-dimensional conduction network with some degree of orientation, thereby mitigating the interface scattering and increasing the mean free range of phonons. In addition, the composites displayed excellent electromagnetic interference-shielding capabilities and thermal stability, positioning them as dual-functional thermal management materials with significant application potential.
