TiO2 nanoparticle embedded PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membrane: Improvement in flux and anti-fouling properties

Yunwu Yu,Yan Wu,Yong Yuan,Yan Wang,Changwei Xu,Yanfeng Fang,Yaxin Gu,Peng Liu,Ye Wan,Lihua Wang,Xiaowei Sun

Based on the previous study, the properties, separation efficiencies, and anti-fouling performances of TiO 2 nanoparticle embedded PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membrane made via non-solvent-induced phase separation were investigated. SEM, contact angle measurement , ATR-FTIR, and other methods were used to characterize the membranes, and then the pure water flux (PWF) and dye rejection were measured. The TiO 2 nanoparticle embedded PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by stepwise solution blending method. Compared to the pristine PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membrane, the anti-fouling and pure water flux performances were enhanced as the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles. The pure water flux of TiO 2 nanoparticle embedded membranes was significantly increased and could even reach 3368.2 LMH at 5 bar much greater than that of the pristine PEEKWC/PEI ultrafiltration membrane (1423.8 LMH), remaining a retention rate for BBR higher than 98.5%. And the TiO 2 nanoparticle embedded PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membranes exhibited a certain degree of increase of FRR (higher than 80%) after UV illumination. After a series of characterisation, the dye wastewater treatment property of membranes was assessed through filtration of Coomassie brilliant blue and Congo red solutions and researches were conducted on the anti-fouling capabilities of membranes. The TiO 2 nanoparticle embedded PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membranes exhibited self-cleaning efficiency with lower irreversible fouling ratio. The pure water flux recovery ratio following dye fouling was higher after being exposed to UV irradiation, which could be attributed to the TiO 2 nanoparticles' photocatalytic destruction of organic pollutants .

Preparation and properties of cross-linking PEEKWC/PEI ultrafiltration membrane enhanced by silica and silane coupling agent

Liu Ziqun,Yu Yunwu,Yuan Yong,Jiang Bin,Liu Changwei,Wang Junhai,Li Ting,Liu Peng,Ma Ying,Fang Yanfeng,Sun Xiaowei

Based on previous studies, we prepared ultrafiltration membranes by cross-linking PEEKWC/PEI using a non-solvent induced phase separation method, this membrane has excellent hydrophilicity. We also incorporated silica (SiO 2 ) into the cross-linked membrane system through distribution blending in this study. The membranes underwent characterization using various methods including SEM, ATR-FTIR, and water contact angle tests. To assess the impact of silica addition on membrane performance, tests were conducted on pure water flux, dye flux, dye retention, salt solution flux, salt-dye mixed solution flux, and retention. The results indicated a noticeable improvement in the hydrophilicity of the membrane following the addition of silica, as evidenced by a reduction in the hydrophilic angle from 22.175° to 6.271°, pure water flux up to 850 LMH at 0.3 MPa. Moreover, the retention performance of the membrane was enhanced, with the Congo red solution reaching a retention rate of 99.9% at 0.3 MPa pressure. Subsequently, a fixed silica ratio was chosen (2wt%), and different ratios of silane coupling agent were added using the distribution blending method to explore their effects on membrane performance. The tests revealed an improvement in the retention performance, the group with the largest change in the Congo Red cut-off rate, with an increase in the Congo Red cut-off from 88.7% to 97.9%.

High-flux, antifouling and highly hydrophilic tight ultrafiltration membranes based on crosslinked PEEKWC/PEI containing positively charged water channel for dyes removal

Yunwu Yu,Yan Wu,Chunyang Xie,Xiaowei Sun,Yongbin Wang,Peng Liu,Yan Wang,Changwei Liu,Ye Wan,Wenhao Pan,Tianwei Li

For the removal of textile dyes, an effective alternative to fabricate tight ultrafiltration membrane was adopted. A series of tight ultrafiltration membranes based on PEEKWC/PEI covalent crosslinking structure were prepared by phase inversion method and showed high-flux and good antifouling performance attributed to the enhancement of hydrophilicity by PEI. The top-surface of the UF membranes was with a water contact angle in range of 24.33° and 40.10° indicating the excellent hydrophilicity. These membranes containing PEI-based positively charged water channel showed high permeability for pure water and salt solutions. As the content of PEI in membrane reaching 20 wt%, the pure water permeability and pure water flux at 3 bar could reach 308 L·m −2 ·h −1 ·bar −1 and 925 L·m −2 ·h −1 , respectively. The pure water flux could even reach 1526 L·m −2 ·h −1 at 5 bar. At the operation pressure of 3 bar, all the UF membranes showed good single-component BBR rejection between 94.87 % and 97.73 %. The rejection of membranes for BBR in dye/salt mixtures was substantially higher than 94.0 % even at a high salt concentration of 60 g/L. The UF membranes with high-flux of pure water and dye solution were discussed, which could be a promising alternative for sustainable textile wastewater treatment and natural water recovery.

Dual role of polyethyleneimine as membrane matrix and additive for PEEKWC-PEI crosslinked ultrafiltration membrane

Xiaoyu Yang,Yunwu Yu,Xiaowei Sun,Yanfeng Fang,Ying Ma,Peng Liu,Ting Li,Xiangyu Li,Lili Gao

In this study, the dual role of polyethyleneimine (PEI) in the PEEKWC-PEI crosslinked ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was achieved through a two-stage addition method. PEI acted as membrane matrix and additive for the formation and enhancement of PEEKWC-PEI crosslinked UF membrane. The morphological structure, filtration, and permeability properties of UF membranes were studied by selecting suitable PEI concentration and molecular weight. Compared with previously reported studies, the filtration flux was significantly improved while maintaining excellent dye flux, and exhibited extremely low salt ion retention rates, resulting in significantly superior dye/salt separation factors. Increasing the PEI concentration in the casting solution from 0.5 to 4 wt% enhanced the surface pore density and rejection of layer, and the total porosity rose from 71.9 % to 84.5 %. The optimized PEI-1800–2.0 membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 1210.9 LMH and a 99.8 % rejection of Congo red (CR) solution at 3 bar. The molecular weight of additive PEI also showed a significant effect on membrane performances. Among them, the PEI-10000 additive further improved hydrophilicity, elevating the water and dye fluxes to 1309.06 LMH and 786.70 LMH, respectively. The PEI-1800–2.0 membrane can achieve a flux recovery rate (FRR) of 85.8 %, showing excellent contamination resistance. In the test of dye/salt mixed solution with high salt concentration (60 g/L Na 2 SO 4 ), it also showed good retention stability, and the dye removal rate was maintained at 85.5 %. The present work provides a reliable and effective method for the preparation of UF membranes with high filtration performance and high retention capacity even at high salinity. From the comparison of dye/salt separation performance results between membrane in this work and membranes reported in literatures for dye/salt separation, it could be noted that the dye solution flux of PEEKWC-PEI crosslinked UF membrane based on PEI additive significantly improve and the salt retention rate is significantly reduced.

Multi-Scale Analysis of PVP-Regulated PEEKWC/PEI Ultrafiltration Membranes for Dye Wastewater Treatment

Yang Xiaoyu,Yu Yunwu,Zhou Hailong,Xu Qicheng,Sun Xiaowei,Wang Yan,Liu Peng,Li Ting,Liu Xin,Gao Lili

In this study, an innovative multi-scale research framework integrating molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, machine learning (ML) prediction, and experimental validation was established to systematically elucidate the mechanism by which polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) regulates the performance and structure-property relationship of phenolphthalein-based polyether ether ketone/polyethyleneimine (PEEKWC/PEI) ultrafiltration membranes. MD simulations further revealed at the atomic scale that PVP forms a hydrogen-bonding network with the membrane matrix via the carbonyl oxygen of the pyrrolidone ring, thereby significantly enhancing interfacial compatibility. Its flexible chain intercalation can increase the free volume of the membrane. However, excessive addition induces local aggregation and entanglement of molecular chains, hindering water molecule diffusion, resulting in a decrease in diffusion coefficient from 0.115 Ų/ps to 0.082 Ų/ps. The ML model accurately reproduced the decreasing trend of water flux with the increase of PVP content. Combined with SHAP analysis to quantify the influence weight of each factor, it was clarified that operating pressure and surface roughness are the dominant factors, and the global optimal PVP addition amount was identified. Experimental validation showed that the PVP-K90 modified membrane exhibits the best comprehensive performance, with a pure water flux of up to 3162.1 L·m -2 ·h -1 , a Congo Red (CR) rejection rate of 95.3%, and a flux recovery rate (FRR) of 88.9%, demonstrating excellent antifouling performance. The PVP-K120 modified membrane shows better dye rejection effect in high-salt environments, with a rejection rate exceeding 87%. This study moves beyond the traditional trial-and-error approach, reveals the microscopic essence of additive effects through multi-scale correlation analysis, not only successfully prepares high-performance ultrafiltration membranes, but also provides a replicable innovative research paradigm for the directed design and performance optimization of separation membranes.

Separation performance enhancement of PEEKWC/PEI cross-linked ultrafiltration membranes by poly(ethylene glycol) and polyvinylpyrrolidone as polymeric additives

Yunwu Yu,Yan Wu,Zhenchun Li,Yan Wang,Peng Liu,Lihua Wang,Changwei Liu,Ye Wan,Xiaowei Sun,Wenhao Pan

In order to improve both pure water flux and retention rate of the cross-linked ultrafiltration membranes based on phenolphthalein-based poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEKWC) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) were used as polymeric additives in non-solvent-induced phase separation process. The characterizations, separation effectiveness, and anti-fouling performance of membranes were investigated. Compared with n-butanol additive, the PEG and PVP could accelerate the phase separation rate and form thinner and denser skin layer, and then that led to an increase in the fluxes of pure water and better dye retention performance. In addition, the impact of variable additive dosage on the pure water flux and retention for dye solutions was investigated, and the pure water flux of membranes could reach 3270.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 and 2494.5 L·m −2 ·h −1 at a PEG or PVP concentration of 0.5 wt%, respectively. These membranes also exhibited excellent retention performance for Coomassie brilliant blue and Congo red greater than 98%. The simultaneous improvement of pure water flux and retention performance also could be related to the more efficient water transmission channel forming which was investigated by atomic force microscope phase images. In anti-fouling performance tests , the membranes demonstrated effective anti-fouling properties with a high flux recovery ratio after external cleaning with water only.

Construction of dual-functional UGFM-PEEKWC-PEI composite membrane: Synergistic realization of high-flux ultrafiltration and efficient emulsion oil separation

Xiaowei Sun,Zhibo Wu,Yunwu Yu,Xin Liu,Ying Ma,Lili Gao,Yanfeng Fang,Peng Liu,Xiangyu Li,Lihua Wang

Leveraging the excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability and structural tunability of the PEEKWC-PEI system, an UGFM-PEEKWC-PEI composite ultrafiltration membrane was fabricated by incorporating an ultrafine glass fiber membrane (UGFM) in conjunction with a controlled casting-solution dilution strategy. The influences of UGFM incorporation on the membrane microstructure, mechanical performance, surface wettability, and permeation behaviour and separation efficiency were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that introducing UGFM effectively establishes a low-resistance mass-transfer pathway within the composite ultrafiltration membrane, markedly improving its mechanical properties and structural stability. Among the composite ultrafiltration membranes, the MGF-10 membrane exhibits the best overall performance, with the water contact angle reduced to 36.5° and the underwater oil contact angle reaching 138.7°, indicating pronounced hydrophilicity and underwater oleophobicity. At 3 bar, the membrane demonstrates a pure-water permeance of 1086.8 L·m −2 ·h −1 , with the pure-water flux reaching 5093.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 at 5 bar. The MGF-10 composite ultrafiltration membrane achieves a Congo red (CR) rejection of 98.1% at 3 bar, and maintains consistently high rejection toward dye solutions over a variable pressure range of 1–5 bar. Notably, even under high-salinity conditions (60 g/L Na 2 SO 4 ), the composite ultrafiltration membrane retains excellent dye separation capability, delivering a rejection of 91.7%, highlighting its promise for dye desalination via ultrafiltration. Results from static adsorption and dynamic filtration suggest that the composite ultrafiltration membrane predominantly removes dyes via a size-sieving mechanism, with adsorption providing an auxiliary contribution during the initial stage of filtration. Moreover, owing to interfacial regulation enabled by the formation of a surface hydration layer, the composite ultrafiltration membrane delivers excellent performance in surfactant-free oil-water separation, achieving separation efficiencies of up to 99.9% across multiple oil phases and exhibiting good operational stability over repeated cycles. Overall, the UGFM-reinforced architecture and casting-solution dilution control act synergistically to reduce mass-transfer resistance, enhance permeation flux, and sustain high rejection, offering a viable strategy for the structural design of high-performance composite ultrafiltration membranes.
