In industry, ethylene (C 2 H 4 )/propylene (C 3 H 6 ) separations are usually performed by a cryogenic process, which is energy intensive. Membrane separation technology is an alternative separation process that saves energy and is efficient. In this study, blend membranes were prepared by doping polyethylene glycol (PEG600) into a poly(ether-block-amide) (Pebax® 2533) matrix and were used to separate the C 2 H 4 /C 3 H 6 mixture. The PEG 600 and Pebax® 2533 polymers have good compatibility because they share hydrogen bonds. The addition of PEG600 is conducive to the hydrophilicity and the free volume of blend membranes, and it is also conducive to the solubility of C 2 H 4 and C 3 H 6 in the membranes, which improves the ability of the membranes to separate this gas pair. The Pebax® 2533/PEG600 blend membrane with 15% (mass) PEG600 showed the highest separation performance in our investigated membranes, with a C 3 H 6 /C 2 H 4 selectivity of 8.9 and a C 3 H 6 permeability of 196 barrer (1 barrer = 1.33 × 10 14 m 3 (STP)·m·m −2 ·s −1 ·kPa −1 ) at 238 K and 0.2 MPa, which is higher than that of the Pebax® 2533/NaY-6% (mass) membrane ( α C 3 H 6 /C 2 H 4 =6.5, P C 3 H 6 =211 barrer) reported in our previous work. It is confirmed that incorporating PEG600 into the Pebax® 2533 matrix to fabricate blend membranes is an efficient strategy for separating light olefins .

A comprehensive understanding of the in vivo fate of low-molecular-weight polyethylene glycol (PEG) oligomers is essential for optimizing PEGylated therapeutics. This study delineates the polymerization-dependent absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME) of discrete PEG600 oligomers (n = 9–18) in rats using a validated UHPLC-MS/MS method. Systemic exposure, assessed by dose-normalized AUC, was highest for shorter oligomers (n = 9–10) and declined for longer chains (n ≥ 17), while all oligomers exhibited similarly short terminal half-lives (12.7–15.2 min), indicating rapid elimination irrespective of chain length. Tissue distribution revealed pronounced renal accumulation, peaking at mid-chain lengths (n = 11–13), consistent with size-dependent glomerular filtration and tubular reabsorption. Oxidative metabolism yielded both mono- and di-carboxylated derivatives, confirming active enzymatic processing. Excretion studies demonstrated chain-length-dependent elimination, with reduced recovery of longer oligomers suggesting substantial in vivo biodegradation. These findings provide the first monomer-resolved ADME profile of PEG600 oligomers, highlighting the critical role of polymerization degree in governing their pharmacokinetics and informing the rational design of PEGylated drug formulations.

A novel ultra-performance convergence chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UPC 2 -MS/MS) method was developed for the rapid and simultaneous quantification of nine polyethylene glycol 600 (PEG600) oligomers ( n = 10–18) in rat plasma. This approach utilizes supercritical CO₂ as the primary mobile phase, significantly reducing organic solvent consumption and aligning with green analytical chemistry principles. A key innovation involves the selective monitoring of ammonium adducts ([M + NH₄] + ) as precursor ions, which markedly enhanced ionization efficiency and detection sensitivity. Furthermore, a post-column compensation system was integrated to mitigate ion suppression caused by the CO₂-rich mobile phase, resulting in an approximate 5- to 20-fold increase in signal response. The method achieved baseline separation of all oligomers within 3.4 min, demonstrating excellent linearity, precision (CV < 15%), accuracy (85–115%), and recovery (85–115%) in accordance with FDA guidelines. When applied to a pharmacokinetic study, the methodology successfully revealed oligomer-dependent disposition patterns, confirming its utility for in vivo fate tracing of PEG-based formulations. The environmental sustainability and practicality of the method were quantitatively assessed using Analytical GREEnness (AGREE) and Blue Applicability Grade Index (BAGI) metrics, along with the White Index algorithm, yielding high scores of 0.77, 82.5 and 76.8%, respectively. This UPC 2 -MS/MS platform offers a green, sensitive, and high-throughput analytical strategy for the oligomer-resolved characterization of PEG polymers in biological systems.

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) has emerged as a predominant synthetic polymer in contemporary drug delivery systems due to its unique physicochemical properties and versatile functionalization capabilities. Deciphering chain-length-dependent biosafety and cellular uptake profiles of PEG polymers is vital for optimizing nanomedicine formulations. We established an ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) methodology employing ammonium adduction for multiplex quantification of PEG600 oligomers ( n = 9–18) in human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) hepatocytes. The method demonstrated linear response ( R 2 > 0.99) across 10–1000 ng/mL for PEG600 oligomers ( n = 9–18). PEG600 oligomers ( n = 9–18) internalization in HepG2 cells was quantified by the validated UHPLC-MS/MS method. PEG600 polymers with 9–18 subunits could be absorbed into HepG2 cells with a small quantity (less than 0.04%). The cytotoxicity study suggested that the half-maximal inhibitory concentration of PEG600 on HepG2 cells is 31.42 mg/mL. PEG600 oligomers demonstrated negligible anti-proliferative effects in HepG2 hepatocytes. This study could provide analytical techniques and critical reference data for cytotoxicity and whole cellular uptake profiles of PEG600 polymers with 9–18 subunits in HepG2 cells. This work establishes an analytical framework for assessing the cytotoxicity and cellular uptake kinetics of PEG600 oligomers ( n = 9–18) in HepG2 cells.

The over production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays a critical role in the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Organic ROS scavengers currently used for CKD treatment do not satisfy low dosage and high efficiency requirements. Ceria nanomaterials featured with renewable ROS scavenging activity are potential candidates for CKD treatment. Herein, a method for the synthesis of ceria nanoclusters (NCs) featured with small size of ≈1.2 nm is reported. The synthesized NCs are modified by three hydrophilic ligands with different molecular weights, including succinic acid (SA), polyethylene glycol diacid 600 (PEG600), and polyethylene glycol diacid 2000 (PEG2000). The surface modified NCs exhibit excellent ROS scavenging activity due to the high Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio in their crystal structures. Compared with bigger-sized ceria nanoparticles (NPs) (≈45 nm), NCs demonstrate smoother blood concentration-time curve, lower organ accumulation, and faster metabolic rate superiorities. The administration of NCs to CKD mice, especially PEG600 and PEG2000 modified NCs, can effectively inhibit oxidative stress, inflammation, renal fibrosis, and apoptosis in their kidneys. Due to these benefits, the constructed NCs can ameliorate the progression of CKD. These findings suggest that NCs is a potential redox nanomedicine for future clinical treatment of CKD.
