Xiaowen Wang,Yingnan Gao,Changyou Liu,Yaping Wang,Anqin Liu,Wenguang Yang

Robots have a profound impact on human production and life, which have been developed by leaps and bounds in recent decades. As the higher and higher requirements for operations in complex environments, researchers continue to develop wireless driven miniature robots. In this paper, the ratio and deformation properties of PNIPAM and PEGDA hydrogels were researched, and the microcrawls and microgrippers with 3D structure were prepared through secondary curing technology. They have light stimulus response and magnetic response characteristics, and can be reversibly transformed from 3D to 2D structure to complete crawling and transportation functions. This research offers a reference for the fabrication and programmable actuation of intelligent materials. It holds certain promise in the domains of transportation and bionics.

Improved corona discharge-based modified poling method for 0–3 PZT/PEGDA piezoelectric composites

Huiru Wang,Jingyi Liu,Sorour Sadeghzade,Runsheng Hou,Hongyan Yuan

Among piezo composites, 0–3 type ceramic/polymer-based composites have balanced properties and flexible manufacturing processes, allowing them to tackle challenges in wearable electronics and sensing technology. However, due to a misfit between the dielectric coefficients of the ceramic particles and polymer matrix , poling 0–3 composites is difficult. Therefore, in this study, we develop a novel poling method that combines the merits of normal corona poling and oil-based poling methods to activate a lead zirconium titanate (PZT)/Polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) composite. The influence of various parameters (voltage, temperature, poling duration, and time of ageing) on the piezoelectric and dielectric properties of the PZT/polymer composite were evaluated. For the 0–3 PZT/PEGDA composites (67 wt%), the optimal poling parameters were found to be 60 min poling duration, 25 °C, and 24 kV. The d 33 (32 pC/N) obtained by the proposed poling method is about 3 times that obtained by the normal corona poling method (11 pC/N). This modified poling method was shown to be more effective than the conventional method for a range of filler contents (50 wt%, 67 wt%, and 75 wt%). It was also found that the d 33 value of the PZT/PEGDA composite increased over time and was attributed to the increase of the composite dielectric constant after poling. Finally, sensing elements were assembled from the poled samples and evaluated, which shows the potential for detecting tiny signals in sensing and soft robotics.

Novel TiO2/PEGDA Hybrid Hydrogel Prepared in Situ on Tumor Cells for Effective Photodynamic Therapy

Hui Zhang,Ronghua Shi,Anjian Xie,Juchuan Li,Long Chen,Ping Chen,Shikuo Li,Fangzhi Huang,Yuhua Shen

A novel inorganic/organic hybrid hydrogel system containing titanium dioxide (TiO2)/poly(ethylene glycol) double acrylates (PEGDA) was prepared by in situ photopolymerization on tumor cells for photodynamic therapy (PDT). TiO2 nanorods with diameter of ∼5 nm and length of ∼25 nm in this system presented dual functions, as effective photosensitizers for PDT and initiators for causing the in situ formation of hydrogel, under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation. The hybrid hydrogel retained the TiO2 around tumor cell to form a drug-loaded hydrogel shell. This resulted in a high concentration of singlet oxygen (1O2) under NIR irradiation, which induced apoptosis of tumor cell. Also, the hydrogel could reduce the side effects by preventing TiO2 from migrating to normal tissue. Furthermore, the TiO2 nanorods in this hydrogel shell were photochemically recyclable and could be reused in regular treatment. The outcomes of this study provide a new way to exploit multifunction of inorganic semiconductor nanomaterials for a variety of biomedical applications.

Construction of biocompatible bilayered light-driven actuator composed of rGO/PNIPAM and PEGDA hydrogel

Liai Yang,Ting Zhang,Wei Sun

To construct an actuator with biocompatibility and potential use in biomedicine field, a light-driven actuator composed of reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) hydrogel is constructed. First, rGO/PNIPAM hydrogel is prepared by free radical polymerization and l -ascorbic acid reduction, of which the surface temperature increases quickly under near-infrared (NIR) laser indicating the efficient photothermal conversion of rGO. The results of cytotoxicity tests demonstrate that rGO/PNIPAM is biocompatible and has no obvious toxicity to myoblast line C2C12 cells. Second, bilayer hydrogel composed of rGO/PNIPAM and PEGDA is prepared using a similar method layer-by-layer. The bilayer strip bends towards rGO/PNIPAM under NIR laser. The bending is improved after reduction. The laser power density has a strong impact on the bending rate and degree. The reversible bending deformation indicates the structural stability. All the above results approve that the bilayer actuator has great potential to be applied in biomedicine fields such as organ-on-chip, drug-carrier, or surgical aid.

PVA/PEGDA microgels loaded with L-cysteine for corrosion inhibition coating on fragile bronze

Hu Hengrui,Huang Xia,Chen Jiachang,Chen Junying

Bronze holds immense artistic, historical, and scientific significance, representing a valuable component of humanity's cultural heritage. Despite its cultural value, bronze is susceptible to corrosion and damage caused by environmental factors. This paper prepared an environmentally friendly poly(vinyl alcohol)/ poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PVA/PEGDA) microgel loaded with L-cysteine (Cys), which effectively protects fragile bronze artifacts. In this study, the color and microstructure of the bronze coatings were characterized using a camera, colorimeter and scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the PVA/PEGDA microgels loaded with Cys (PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating) not only did not change the color and appearance of the bronze, but also adhered and bonded well to the bronze surface. Confocal microscopy confirmed the soft and self-healing properties of the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating. Electrochemical testing and analysis showed that the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating exhibited excellent corrosion inhibition performance, with a corrosion inhibition efficiency of as high as 95.66%. The compressive test shows that the PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating has certain reinforcement properties for bronze. The complete removal of PVA/PEGDA + Cys microgels coating can be achieved by spraying ethanol solution, indicating the enormous potential of microgels coating in protecting corroded bronze artifacts in the short term.

Cellulose/PEGDA composite gel electrolyte with adjustable porosity and interfacial compatibility for lithium-ion batteries

Zi Xingfu,Wu Hongming,Song Jiling,Guo Guangping,Guo Jianbing

Cellulose-based gel electrolytes used in Li-ion batteries have poor interfacial compatibility, leading to poor cycle and rate performance. Herein, the preparation of a cellulose/polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate (PEGDA) gel electrolyte, with good cycle stability, is reported. The interfacial compatibility, electrolyte uptake, and thermal stability of the gel electrolyte could be adjusted by changing the PEGDA content of the gel electrolyte. The porosity changed with the PEGDA content and the electrolyte uptake rate increased from 383.49 to 932.57%. The interfacial resistance of the cellulose/PEGDA gel electrolyte was 97.24 Ω, while that of the pure cellulose was 565.06 Ω. This can be attributed to the added PEGDA, which hinders the hydroxy activity of the cellulose, thus, improving the electrode–electrolyte interface performance. The excellent interfacial compatibility and high porosity led to excellent cycle stability. The capacity retention rate of the assembled battery after 100 cycles, at 0.5 C, was as high as 96.8%. In addition, the high electrolyte uptake rate from the 3D porous structure also improved the ionic conductivity and Li-ion migration number of the cellulose/PEGDA gel electrolyte.

PEGDA-SN as Both Solid-State Electrolyte and Solid-Solid Interface Material for Li-O2 Battery

Zining Man,Hao Tian,Xingbao Zhu,Yu Wang,Yuanguo Wu,Xiangyu Wen,Zhe Lü

The solid-state batteries have received widespread attention due to their excellent stability and safety, however, the low ionic conductivity and weak interface contact always restricted its performance. In this work, we propose an in situ thermally cross-linked and solidified polymer electrolyte with polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as scaffold in which succinonitrile (SN) and lithium bis-trifluoromethanesulfonimide (LiTFSI) were further introduced to improve the ionic conductivity. Herein, the composite gel was served as not only solid-solid interface material but also solid-state electrolyte. Different with conventional polymer gels, the solvent evaporation could not happen for this composite material during the solidification process, and therefore resulting in good interface contact without inside bubbles. We further present the investigation on transport principle of Li+ in the solid-state electrolyte and the effect of molecular chain on ionic conductivity. The conductivity of the solid-state electrolyte can reach 1.76 × 10−4 S cm−1 at room temperature without any assistance of liquid electrolytes, which is attributed to the short molecular chain of PEGDA. Electrochemical window of the solid-state electrolyte can reach 5.2 V after cross-linking treatment. And the lithium-oxygen battery using this solid-state electrolyte can stably cycle for more than 1100 cycles with a current density of 200 mA g−1 and a limit capacity of 200 mAh g−1 at room temperature.

Development of pH-Responsive SA/PEGDA/AS-POSS Hydrogels via Michael Addition for Controlled Drug Release and Enhanced Mechanical Properties

Yang Meng,Wen Li,Lingji Zhang,Mario Berrettoni,Hongzhong Zhang,Xiaojing Zhang

Graphical This study develops pH-responsive SA/PEGDA/AS-POSS hydrogels through Michael addition reactions to achieve controlled drug release and enhanced mechanical properties. The hydrogels exhibit tunable swelling and degradation behaviors under various pH conditions, demonstrating their potential for targeted drug delivery. These hydrogels offer promising prospects for biomedical applications, providing efficient drug loading, controlled release, and improved mechanical strength. In this study, thiolated sodium alginate (SA) and hydrophilic, polymerizable Janus-type polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (AS-POSS) are synthesized by introducing thiol and sulfonic acid groups, respectively. A series of pH-responsive SA/PEGDA/AS-POSS nanocomposite hydrogels are successfully prepared through Michael addition reactions between the thiol groups of thiolated sodium alginate and the double bonds in the molecular chains of AS-POSS and poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA). This reaction proceeds rapidly under physiological conditions without requiring initiators or catalysts. As the content of AS-POSS increases, the pore size within the hydrogel decreases, and the network structure becomes denser, with significant improvements in mechanical properties. The hydrogel exhibits excellent pH sensitivity, showing lower swelling in acidic media compared to neutral media, and undergoing hydrolysis and losing stability in alkaline media. Moreover, the incorporation of AS-POSS significantly enhances the drug-loading capacity (85.7 %) and encapsulation efficiency (72.1 %) of doxorubicin (DOX). The drug is released faster in weakly acidic environments, with a cumulative release rate reaching 80.4 %, demonstrating excellent targeting and controlled release properties. Cytotoxicity tests show that the SA/PEGDA/AS-POSS hydrogel has good biocompatibility and exhibits effective tumor-killing ability, indicating its great potential as a drug carrier with promising applications in biomedical materials.

Improvement in lithium-ion transport performance of cathodes by PEGDA-based solid-state electrolyte

Zhang Yongquan,Zhu Baoshan,Chi Qingguo,Gao Hongchang,Zhang Changhai,Zhang Tiandong,Zhu Kai,Cao Dianxue

The transport performance of lithium ions affects the rate performance of the cathode at different current densities. The poor interface contact between a solid electrolyte and the cathode makes it difficult to transport lithium ions. Adding a solid electrolyte into the cathode material can improve lithium ion transport. In this paper, we prepared some cathodes with different doping ratios, including two common cathode materials (LiFePO4 and NCM811), and tested their rate and long cycle performance. LFP-10 has a specific discharge capacity of 79.75 mAh g−1 at 5C, and the Li+ diffusion coefficient of LFP-10 is 4.91 × 10−13 cm−2 s−1, which is about 13.4 times higher than the pure LiFePO4 sample. The rate performance of an all-solid-state battery has also been improved, and there is still more than 100 mAh g−1 capacity reserved at 60°C and 2C current density. This shows that the introduction of a PEGDA-based solid electrolyte can significantly improve the Li+ transport of the cathode, and the composite cathode also provides support for the future application of all-solid-state batteries.

Fib@PEGDA/GelMA Hydrogel as a Light-curing Thin-layer Matrix for RPE Cell Growth and Function

Naiwen Zhang,Cong Ma,Fei Shao,Huanan Wang,Xiang Ma

Retinal degenerative diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP), are leading causes of blindness globally, characterized by progressive degeneration of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and photoreceptor (PR) cells. Despite advancements, current therapies have not substantially arrested disease progression. Cell replacement therapy using healthy RPE and PR cells holds promise but faces obstacles such as poor cell survival, inadequate integration, and transplantation difficulties. To address these issues, tissue engineering combined with 3D printing has become a focal point. This study investigates the use of four hydrogels—GelMA, HAMA, AlgMA, and PEGDA—and their various crosslinked combinations for creating hydrogel thin-layer matrices conducive to RPE cell growth. PEGDA/GelMA hydrogel demonstrated optimal support for cell spreading and proliferation, which is not achievable with hydrogels matrices of other formulations. The relationship between the mechanical properties of PEGDA/GelMA hydrogels and cell growth was further refined. PEGDA600-20 hydrogel with a compressive modulus of 1245.07 ± 20.79 kPa was selected based on time-course viability assays, leading to the development of the optimized Fib@PEGDA/GelMA hydrogel exhibited exceptional biocompatibility. Compared to PEGDA/GelMA, CCK-8 assays demonstrated significantly improved relative cell viability at 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h, with increases of 17.73 ± 1.22%, 14.54 ± 3.63%, and 19.04 ± 2.31%, respectively on Fib@PEGDA/GelMA matrix. qRT-PCR results indicated a mitigation of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), as evidenced by downregulation of EMT markers (CDH2, COL1A1, and FN1), accompanied by reduced IL-6 levels. Fib@PEGDA/GelMA hydrogel enhanced phagocytic activity in ARPE-19 cells and promoted functional expression in hiPSC-RPEs. Additionally, the hydrogel showed favorable in vivo biocompatibility following subcutaneous implantation of RCS rats at 1, 2, and 4 weeks post-implantation evidenced by HE and Masson's staining. This system offers a promising bioink for 3D-printed retinal cell scaffolds and paves the way for future advancements in cell replacement therapies for retinal degenerative diseases.

Fabrication of PMPC/PTM/PEGDA micropatterns onto polypropylene films behaving with dual functions of antifouling and antimicrobial activities

Liu Jiang,Wancheng Zhu,Huaming Qian,Changhao Wang,Yashao Chen,Peng Liu

Polymer materials with high biocompatibility and versatile functions are urgently required in the biomedical field. The hydrophobic surface and inert traits of polymer materials usually encounter severe biofouling and bacterial infection which hinder the potential application of polymers as biomedical materials. Although many antifouling or antimicrobial coatings have been developed for modification of biomedical devices/implants, few can simultaneously fulfill the requirements for antimicrobial and antifouling activities. Herein, we constructed bifunctional micropatterns with antifouling and antimicrobial properties onto polypropylene (PP) films using argon plasma activation treatment, photomask technique and UV-initiated graft polymerization method. Different sizes of PMPC/PTM/PEGDA micropatterns were fabricated on PP films to yield patterned PP–PMPC/PTM/PEGDA as evidenced by infrared (IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), where PMPC is poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) for enhancement of hydrophilicity and biocompatibility, PTM is poly(methacryloyloxyethyltrimethylammonium chloride) for contribution to antimicrobial activity and PEGDA is poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) as the crosslinker. The surface hydrophilicity of patterned PP–PMPC/PTM/PEGDA was characterized by the static water contact angle test. The results showed that the PP sample with a micropattern with the size of 5 μm exhibited the best hydrophilicity. For biological assays of patterned PP–PMPC/PTM/PEGDA, the micropattern size at 5 μm performed the best for both antiplatelet adhesion and antimicrobial activities. We anticipate that this work could provide a new method for building bifunctional biomedical materials to promote the application of PP in biomedical fields.

NIR responsive AuNR/pNIPAM/PEGDA inverse opal hydrogel microcarriers for controllable drug delivery

L. Z. Liu,X. Y. Sun,Z. Y. Yan,B. F. Ye

Particle-based delivery systems have emerged as a powerful platform in controlled drug release. In the present study, we developed a new inverse opal hydrogel microcarrier system composed of gold nanorods (AuNRs) for near-infrared light (NIR) activated drug delivery. AuNRs with a desired aspect ratio were prepared by a seed-mediated growth method. The inverse opal hydrogel microcarriers composited with AuNRs were synthesized by negatively replicating silica colloidal crystal beads (SCCBs). The NIR-thermo response of the microcarriers was due to the NIR photothermal heating effect of AuNRs and the thermo responsive volume transition of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAM) hydrogel. It was found that the NIR-controlled reversible shrinking response of the microcarriers was ideal for the controllable drug release with real-time self-reporting color indication.
