Exploring Phenolphthalein Polyarylethers as High-Performance Alternative Binders for High-Voltage Cathodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Kai Yang,Keding Chen,Xingdi Zhang,Shuyu Gao,Jichang Sun,Jin Gong,Jinchao Chai,Yun Zheng,Zhihong Liu,Honghua Wang

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has unique electrochemical oxidation resistance and is the only binder for high-voltage cathode materials in the battery industry for a long time. However, PVDF still has some drawbacks, such as environmental limitations on fluorine, strict requirements for environmental humidity, weak adhesion, and poor lithium ion conductivity. Herein, the long-standing issues associated with high-voltage lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO 2 ; LCO) are successfully addressed by incorporating phenolphthalein polyetherketone (PEK-C) and phenolphthalein polyethersulfone (PES-C) as binder materials. These binders have unexpected electrochemical oxidation resistance and robustness adhesion, ensure uniform coverage on the surface of LCO, and establish an effective and fast ion-conductive CEI/binder composite layer. By leveraging these favorable characteristics, electrodes based on polyarylether binders demonstrate significantly better cycling and rate performance than their counterparts using traditional PVDF binders. The fast ion-conductive CEI/binder composite layer effectively mitigates adverse reactions at the cathode–electrolyte interface. As anticipated, batteries utilizing phenolphthalein polyarylether binders exhibit capacity retention rates of 88.92% and 80.4% after 200 and 500 cycles at 4.5 and 4.6 V, respectively. The application of binders, such as polyarylether binders, offers a straightforward and inspiring approach for designing high-energy-density battery materials.

Rheology Modulation and Melt Strength Enhancement Enable Continuous Melt Spinning of PEK-C Fibers

Yi Mao,Zhao Ke,Ying Ma,Hui Li,Zexu Hu

Phenolphthalein poly (aryl ether ketone) (PEK-C) is highly compatible with epoxy resin, which is applied in epoxy resin-based composites to improve their strength. Solution spinning and electrospinning techniques are often used to produce PEK-C fibers, but these techniques pollute the environment and are not productive. To address the above challenges, melt spinning may be employed, but due to the high degree of molecular chain entanglement and poor melt fluidity of PEK-C, melt spinning remains difficult. Herein, this study presents the continuous melt spinning of PEK-C fibers through rheology modulation and melt strength enhancement. A series of PEK-C samples with different molecular weights were prepared by adjusting the molar ratio of monomers. The influence of molecular weights on rheological properties was investigated via capillary rheology tests. PEK-C with molecular weight (2.01 × 104g/mol) was chosen, and the optimal spinning temperature was determined to be 370 °C. The as-polymerized PEK-C powder was compounded into pellets; subsequently, the PEK-C pellets with enhanced melt strength were continuously processed into fiber through melt spinning. The obtained PEK-C fibers possess high tensile strength (0.56 cN/dtex) and breaking strength (1.06 cN/dtex). The mechanical properties and molecular chain orientation of PEK-C fibers were also optimized by spinning process parameters. This work presents continuous melt spinning of PEK-C fibers via rheology modulation and melt strength enhancement, which resolve the environmental and low productivity issues.

Improved Thermal and Electromagnetic Shielding of PEEK Composites by Hydroxylating PEK-C Grafted MWCNTs

Fengyu Wen,Shu Li,Rui Chen,Yashu He,Lei Li,Lin Cheng,Jierun Ma,Jianxin Mu

With the rapid rise of new technologies such as 5G and artificial intelligence, electronic products are becoming smaller and higher power, and there is an increasing demand for electromagnetic interference shielding and thermal conductivity of electronic devices. In this work, hydroxyphenolphthalein type polyetherketone grafted carboxy carbon nanotube (PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH) composites were prepared by esterification reaction. The composites exhibited good thermal conductivity, and compared with (MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK) with randomly distributed fillers, (PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH) composites showed a significant advantage, with the same carbon nanotube content, the thermal conductivity of PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK (30 wt%) was 0. 71 W/(m-K), which was 206% higher than that of PEEK and 0.52 W/(m-K) higher than that of MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK (26.1 wt%). In addition, the PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH) composite exhibited excellent electrical conductivity and electromagnetic shielding (SE). The SE of 30 wt% PEK-C-OH-g-MWCNTs-COOH/PEEK is higher than the commercially used standard whose value is 22.9 dB (8.2 GHz). Thus, this work provides ideas for the development of thermally conductive functionalized composites. Keywords:thermal and electrical conductivity;electromagnetic interference shielding;surface treatments;composites

Preparation of Macroporous PEK-C Powders with Chemically Linked Ionic Liquids as Catalyst and Kinetics Study of Biomass

Peng Lu,Yong Cao,Xiaolan Wang

Macroporous cardo polyetherketone (PEK-C) powder catalyst bearing covalently ionic liquids (PEK-C-ILs) was prepared, it exhibited a high catalytic performance for biomass hydrolysis. A hydrolysis mechanism of inulin over this new catalyst was proposed as well. The influences of degree of chloromethylation of PEK-C, catalyst dosage, reaction temperature, pore size of PEK-C-ILs and inulin concentration were investigated. A high conversion of inulin of 99.7% was obtained under the optimal reaction conditions. Meanwhile, the hydrolysis kinetics was studied under different conditions. The proposed kinetic model of inulin hydrolysis catalyzed by PEK-C-ILs was established and it successfully predicted the inulin hydrolysis in wider ranges of experimental conditions. The results demonstrated that the catalytic inulin hydrolysis performance of PEK-C-ILs is better than that of homogenous ILs due to that there was a high-density spatial distribution of active sites on the surface and inner pore wall of PEK-C after the ILs was immobilized. Furthermore, the stability including chemical structure and physical appearance and reusability tests showed that PEK-C-ILs catalyst could be effectively separated and recovered from hydrolysates and has excellent reusability. Importantly, using the PEK-C-ILs as catalyst makes the recycling of ILs simplified, efficient and the hydrolysis process more economical. At the same time, it avoided the potential hazards of homogenous ILs to the environment. Therefore, it is a kind of green catalyst with potential application prospect in many catalysis fields. Keywords:cardo polyetherketone;ionic liquids;immobilization;macroporous powder catalyst;inulin hydrolysis
