Novel octopus shaped organic–inorganic composite membranes for PEMFCs

Qingting Liu,Quan Sun,Na Ni,Fang Luo,Rong Zhang,Shengfei Hu,Xujin Bao,Fan Zhang,Feng Zhao,Xiao Li

Phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazoles are among the most interesting proton exchange membrane materials for high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell applications . As a major challenge the proton conducting decline due to free phosphoric acid leaching during the long term fuel cell operation is addressed by fixing overmuch phosphoric acid in the polymer matrix . Novel organic-inorganic composite membranes are prepared via in situ synthesis of poly(2,5-benzimidazole) (ABPBI) and OctaAmmonium POSS (AM-POSS) hybrid composites (ABPBI/AM-POSS) following phosphoric acid doping and membrane casting procedures. Compared with the pristine ABPBI membrane, the introduction of AM-POSS into ABPBI polymer membrane caused water and phosphoric acid absorbilities increasing dramatically, resulting in the significant increase of proton conductivities at whether hydrous or anhydrous condition. ABPBI/3AM composite membranes with phosphoric acid uptake above 250% showed best proton conductivities from room temperature to 160 °C, indicating these composite membranes could be excellent candidates as a polymer electrolyte membrane for low and intermediate temperature applications.

Nanostructure-transportation relation to PEMFCs activity and durability degradation

Huibing Chen,Ming Chen,Haijiang Wang

The Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is a crucial component in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA), playing a vital role in providing a channel for water transport and acting as a bridge for proton conduction. However, during the long-term operation of fuel cells, PEM is susceptible to attack from metal ions such as Cr 3+ originating from the corrosion of metallic bipolar plates , leading to changes in its transport properties. Here, we report on the impact of Cr 3+ on the microstructure and mechanical properties of PEM and then correlate it with changes in water uptake and proton conductivity , studying the effect of Cr 3+ contamination on fuel cell performance and durability. The study reveals that Cr 3+ forms a dense cross-linking structure with sulfonic acid groups inside the ionomer , resulting in an increase in storage modulus due to the larger ion radius and higher valence state, leading to a decrease in water uptake and proton conductivity. The membrane transport properties are primarily dependent on its water content. It is observed that Cr 3+ contamination reduced the fuel cell voltage and maximum power density by 47.6 % and 57.1 %, respectively, with a voltage attenuation rate up to 2.9 mV/h, nearly 14 times that of the uncontaminated condition (0.21 mV/h). These findings provide valuable insights for developing high-transmission PEMs and aid in predicting the degradation and lifespan of fuel cells under actual operating conditions.

A novel hydrophilic-modified gas diffusion layer for proton exchange membrane fuel cells operating in low humidification

Zhicheng Liu,Li Zhou,Yanyan Gao,Manman Qi,Haiping Chen,Ming Hou,Zhigang Shao

Summary A novel hydrophilic-modified gas diffusion layer (GDL) through inserting the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) into the microporous layer is fabricated to elevate the performance of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) under low humidfication. The single fuel cell test confirms that the membrane electrode assembly with 3 wt% addition of PAN in the cathode GDL exhibits a maximum power density of 0.616 W cm −2 , which is 30% higher than that of conventional hydrophobic GDL (0.480 W cm −2 ) under low humidity. This significant enhancement in performance is attributed to the powerful wettability and the pore structure modification of the PAN. Besides, the introduction of PAN shows little influence on the performance of PEMFCs under full humidity. Our findings reported here shed new light on developing a robust GDL that can be used in both low and high humidification.

Tuning Electron Cloud Density in MOF Nanosheets for Enhanced Proton Conduction in PEMFCs

Dongxu Shen,Yarong Liu,Chongchong Chen,Zhirong Yang,Hao Li,Shanghao Xiao,Wenjia Wu,Jingtao Wang

Precise construction of proton transfer pathways and modulation of proton carrier microenvironments are crucial for achieving high proton conduction in proton exchange membranes (PEMs). Despite extensive efforts to tailor these microenvironments, the underlying regulation of electron cloud density around proton carriers, intrinsically linked to proton conduction, remains largely overlooked. Herein, MIL-53-SO 3 H-X (X = –F, –Br, –H, –CH 3 ) nanosheets are synthesized via solvothermal coordination of Cr 3+ ions with functionalized terephthalic acid (BDC-X) ligands, followed by post-synthetic sulfonation at unsaturated Cr 3+ sites to anchor –SO 3 H groups. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental results reveal that electron-withdrawing –F groups enhance the electron cloud density around –SO 3 H sites, shortening transfer distance, aligning water molecules, and lowering the proton transfer barrier. Conversely, electron-donating –CH 3 groups deplete the electron cloud density in the –SO 3 H region, disrupting proton transport pathways. The MIL-53-SO 3 H-F nanosheet achieves an intrinsic proton conductivity of 298.3 mS cm −1 at 80 °C and 98% RH, a 4.5-fold increase over MIL-53-SO 3 H-CH 3 nanosheets (65.5 mS cm −1 ), as measured by the comb electrode. The corresponding lamellar membrane delivers a high peak power density of 734.8 mW cm −2 and remains stable for over 100 h in H 2 /O 2 PEM fuel cells (PEMFCs).

Development of Ti bipolar plates with carbon/PTFE/TiN composites coating for PEMFCs

Pingping Gao,Zhiyong Xie,Xiaobo Wu,Chun Ouyang,Ting Lei,Piaopiao Yang,Chunbo Liu,Junbin Wang,Tao Ouyang,Qizhong Huang

A highly corrosion resistant and conductive carbon/PTFE/TiN composite coating on Ti bipolar plates is prepared by a two-step hydrothermal and impregnation process. The composite coating exhibits a full coverage with uniformly distributed PTFE and TiN particles when 0.1 mol/L of glucose is used as carbon source and 10 wt % PFTE + 3 g/L TiN suspension as impregnating solution. The as-prepared composite coating film shows 0.009 μA cm −2 of corrosion current density and 13 mΩ cm 2 of ICR in the simulated solution of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, respectively. Meanwhile, the potentiostatic polarization test shows that the corrosion current density of the composite coating is below 1 μA cm −2 under real PEMFC working conditions of the cathode (0.6 V) and anode (−0.1 V). Additionally, the composite coating enhances hydrophobic property with a static contact angle of 120.2°and 115.5°before and after polarization test, respectively. In summary, the Ti substrate with carbon/PTFE/TiN composite coating shows a great potential application as bipolar plates of PEMFCs.

Performance- and Durability-Enhanced Carbon-Skeleton Nanofiber Electrode with Pt3Co/C for PEMFCs

Yanyan Gao,Ming Hou,Liang He,Manman Qi,Haiping Chen,Wenzhe luo,Zhigang Shao

To enhance the performance and durability of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), we looked beyond the polymer-skeleton electrospinning electrode and developed a novel carbon-skeleton nanofiber electrode (the C-spun electrode) by a facile heat-treatment process. After thermal annealing at 600 °C, part of the disordered Pt3Co nanoparticles converted into an ordered intermetallic phase, with an apparently improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (E1/2 increased by 50 mV). Meanwhile, the polymers in the polymer-skeleton nanofibers were carbonized and transformed into carbon skeletons, which exhibited excellent corrosion resistance during extensive carbon corrosion testings (1.0–1.5 V, 0.5 V s–1, 1600 rpm, 30 000 cycles). In unit-cell tests, the C-spun electrode achieved an excellent performance of 8.207 W mgPt–1 (H2/air, 80 °C, 1 bar, 100% RH), which is higher than that of the previously reported electrodes with commercial Pt3Co/C. After 50 000 potential scanning cycles, a negligible performance loss was observed. The C-spun electrode provides a new direction for the next-generation electrodes of PEMFCs.

Controllable construction of Pt/CNT catalyst layers to improve Pt utilization in PEMFCs

Yabiao Pei,Weikang Zhu,Runfei Yue,Lianqin Wang,Ran Li,Junfeng Zhang,Yan Yin

Reducing Pt-group metal (PGM) usage while maintaining high power output and durability is significant for the large-scale commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with ultra-low Pt loading are controllably constructed using carbon nanotube-supported platinum (Pt/CNT) catalysts with high catalytic efficiency. The fuel cell and accelerated stress tests (ASTs) show that the MEA with the Pt/CNT cathode catalyst layer (CCL, 0.1 mgPt cm−2) exhibits superior performance and durability compared to that prepared with conventional commercial Pt/C. For the Pt/CNT MEA (both the anode and cathode utilize Pt/CNT), the normalized peak power density reaches 20.3 W mgPt−1, which is 1.77 times higher than that of Pt/C MEA (11.5 W mgPt−1). The excellent performance of the Pt/CNT CL is attributed to effective mass transfer, the high degree of graphitization of CNTs and the Pt utilization rate. The obtained results can guide the widespread use of CNTs in fuel cell catalyst synthesis.

Dual-resin epoxy–phenolic composite bipolar plates with enhanced conductivity and strength for PEMFCs

Ruihua Rao,Yanhe Zhuang,Haoran Li,Jiaming Zhang,Pengpeng Dai,Shixi Zhao

A high-performance composite bipolar plate (CBP) was developed using a dual-resin matrix of epoxy (EP) and phenolic resin (PF) for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In-situ copolymerization of EP within the PF network significantly improved mechanical toughness, electrical conductivity, and corrosion resistance. The optimized CBPs exhibited flexural strength above 40 MPa, conductivity over 100 S·cm −1 , and a very low corrosion current density of 0.01 μA·cm −2 under simulated operating conditions. Beyond these technical achievements, this study contributed to UN Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) by enabling cost-effective hydrogen energy technologies, and supported Goal 13 (Climate Action) through the promotion of low-carbon, high-efficiency fuel cell components. The proposed dual-resin strategy provided a scalable and environmentally aligned route for CBP fabrication, offering new insight into sustainable materials design for next-generation clean and renewable energy systems.

Synergy between single atom and nanoclusters promotes power and CO tolerant performance in PEMFCs

Jiwen Lin,Zhongyao Zhang,Jiaye Qiu,Yujie Wu,Jun Yu,Yongliang Li,Xiangzhong Ren,Lei Zhang,Zhongxin Song

Pt-based catalysts are widely used in hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) for the anode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, high Pt loading and CO poisoning increase the overall cost and stringent requirements for fuel purity. Here, decreasing Pt usage while achieving high anode performance by anchoring Ni single atoms under or adjacent to Pt nanoclusters is studied. The electron interaction between oxophilic Ni single atoms and Pt nanoclusters is beneficial for optimizing the electrocatalytic HOR. The Pt-Ni SA /CNT-2.6 (CNT-carbon nanotube) catalyst with 2.6 wt% low Pt loading shows superior catalytic activity for the HOR, long-time stability, and good CO-tolerant performance in the liquid half-cell and fuel cell of membrane electrode assembly (MEA). Theoretical calculations reveal that the synergy between single atoms and nanoclusters optimizes the d band of Pt and decreases the activation barrier for HOR and CO stripping, thereby enhancing HOR activity and high CO tolerance in PEMFC anodes with a low Pt loading. This work provides a novel design of electron interactions between single atoms and Pt nanoclusters, showing a significant advantage in promoting low-Pt PEMFCs with high power and CO tolerance.

New insight into the effect of Co2+ contamination on local oxygen transport in PEMFCs

Huiyuan Li,Jiabin You,Xiaojing Cheng,Xiaohui Yan,Shuiyun Shen,Junliang Zhang

Pt alloy electrocatalysts (e.g., Pt 3 Co) for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have attracted a great deal of interest from worldwide researchers in past decades, due to the excellent ORR activity and cost-effective properties. However, the long period operation would yield sever dissolution of the non-precious metal which effects the ionomer microstructure, thus leading to significantly decreased ORR activity of catalyst and aggravated of the oxygen transport resistance in cathode catalyst layers (CCLs), especially the local oxygen transport resistance caused by the ultrathin ionomer film covering on catalyst surface. Herein, in this paper, the effects of Co 2+ contamination on structure of ionomer films and the corresponding local oxygen transport behavior in CCLs are explored via physicochemical characterizations and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, limiting current method, as well as fuel cell performance measurement. It is found that Co 2+ contamination reduces water content and increases the modulus of the ultrathin ionomer film, while reducing the distance between the sulfonic acid groups and increasing the aggregation size of the ionomer, which is related to the volume of hydrophilic domains. Additionally, the electrochemical measurement results demonstrate that as the degree of Co 2+ contamination increases from 0 to 85 %, the local oxygen transport resistance increases from 27.74 s cm −1 to 42.43 s cm −1 , and the peak power density of fuel cell reduces from 510 mW cm −2 to 453 mW cm −2 . The reason behind lies on that contaminated Co 2+ tends to connect with sulfonate, then suppress the ionomer mobility and dislocate the local oxygen transport channels.

Elongated Fe–N–C containing trace atomic Co dopants for high power density PEMFCs

Jiayao Cui,Junyong Min,Hao Wang,Jianglan Shui,Lishan Peng,Zhenye Kang,Jieyuan Liu,Qingjun Chen,Shuo Bai,Yanrong Liu

Developing single-atom Fe–N4/C catalysts is crucial for the large-scale implementation of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). While Fe–N4/C catalysts are inherently active in accelerating the slow ORR process, their performance is still inferior to that of Pt/C. Herein, a trace Co-doped Fe single-atom catalyst (Fe(tCo)–N–C) containing more active Fe2N8 sites has been synthesized. Interestingly, compared with typical FeN4 sites in an Fe–N–C electrocatalyst, the Fe2N8 sites generate a larger Fe–N bond length due to Co-doping. The elongated Fe–N bond in Fe2N8 lowers the d-band center and charge density of iron sites, enhancing the ORR process by facilitating the formation of *OOH and generation and desorption of *OH. Fe(tCo)–N–C manifested excellent acidic and alkaline ORR activity, with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.80 V in HClO4 solution and 0.89 V in KOH medium. More importantly, high peak power densities (Pmax) were realized by applying Fe(tCo)–N–C in PEMFCs, with the Pmax reaching 890 mW cm−2 in H2–O2 and 380 mW cm−2 in H2–air. Additionally, trace Co dopants in the catalyst improved carbon graphitization and provided high ORR catalytic stability. This research introduces an innovative approach to engineering highly active Fe2N8 sites, providing valuable insights for the sustainable progress of PEMFC technology.

Sulfonated poly(arylene ether sulfone)s membranes with distinct microphase-separated morphology for PEMFCs

Xue Li,Shubo Wang,Hong Zhang,Cheng Lin,Xiaofeng Xie,Chenxing Hu,Ran Tian

Copoly (arylene ether sulfone)s was employed for proton exchange membrane preparation via atom transfer radical polymerization followed by mild sulfonation , enhanced phase-separated morphology and favorable proton conductivity were achieved. The comprehensive ex-situ properties of a range of membranes with different ion exchange capacities were characterized alongside the fuel cell performances investigation. The membranes exhibit higher water uptake, which is beneficial to the proton conduction, compared to Nafion® 211 while maintaining similar swelling ratio. The prepared membranes exhibit reasonably high proton conductivity (0.16 S/cm at 85 °C) benefitting from the well-defined microstructure and high connectivity of the hydrophilic domains. Considering the comprehensive property, membrane with moderate ion exchange capacity (1.39 mmol/g) was employed to fabricate the membrane electrode assembly and peak power density of 0.65 W/cm 2 at 80 °C, 60% relative humidity was achieved for a H 2 /O 2 fuel cell, these hydrocarbon membranes can therefore be implemented in PEMFCs.
