Research on the corrosion behavior of Ni–P amorphous coated 316L stainless steel as PEMWE bipolar plates

Bi Mengqi,Liu Wei,Yang Menghui,Huang Naibao

To enhance the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel, which is a potential alternative bipolar plate material for PEMWE or PEMFC, Ni–P amorphous coating was prepared by DC electrodeposition method. The results indicated that the coating’s structure strongly related to the phosphorus (P) content. Under specific phosphorus content conditions, a dense coating (Ni–P-30) with typical amorphous characteristics can be obtained, with a uniform surface morphology and no obvious structural defects. In simulated PEMWE environment, Ni–P-30’s corrosion current density decreased by one order of magnitude and the corrosion potential shifted positively by 0.29 V comparing with untreated steel. The excellent corrosion resistance of the amorphous Ni–P coating is attributed by its continuous and dense microstructure, functioning as an effective physical barrier. Meanwhile, during corrosion process, the P will enrich on the surface from the preferential dissolution of nickel in amorphous Ni–P coatings, improving the corrosion potential, reducing the corrosion current and inhibiting the hydration of Ni. Preliminary studies have shown that Ni–P-coated 316L stainless steel can be used as a replacement for graphite as a bipolar plate for PEMWE and PEMFC.

Investigation of Commercial Tungsten Carbide as an HER Electrocatalyst in PEMWE

Xiaofeng Xie,Lanshan Liu,Shusheng Chen,Yuanquan Zhou,Xiaohong Hu

Proton electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is a promising hydrogen generation method limited by the high cost, such as those costs associated with noble electrocatalysts. Herein, we investigate commercial tungsten carbide (WC), a potential substitute for Pt, as a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst in PEMWE. We adopted two sizes of WC, 400 nm and 1 μm, optimized the electrode fabrication method and running conditions. The results show that the smaller WC does not provide stable performance and operating at high current density and low temperature is more competitive with Pt-based electrolysis. In addition, the most serious drawback is the increased cell voltage on restart after long-term power-off due to considerable WC oxidation, which leads to a decrease in the catalytic carbide carbon. Luckily, this can be offset by effective O 2 isolation in the cathode, such as H 2 O sealing or pumping with H 2 . WC is an economic alternative as a HER electrocatalyst in PEMWE with optimized conditions and an O 2 isolation strategy during an interrupted operation. We provide a practical method to reduce the cost of the HER electrocatalyst.

Dynamic Dissolution-Deposition Equilibrium Enables Unprecedented HER Stability in Acidic PEMWE

Zhibin Li,Haonan Zhong,Xiongjun Liu,Fu-Kuo Chiang,Rui Li,Houwen Chen,Xianzhen Wang,Chubin Wan,Yuan Wu,Hui Wang,Suihe Jiang,Xiaobin Zhang,Zhaoping Lu

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) holds substantial promise for effectively utilizing renewable energy to produce green hydrogen. However, it faces critical durability challenges due to acid-driven catalyst degradation under intermittent renewable power. Here, this study reports a dynamic dissolution-deposition equilibrium that achieves exceptional hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) stability through rational design of a high-entropy alloy-derived architecture. Dealloying FeCoNiNbPt HEA creates a porous scaffold with dual-functional components: an amorphous NbOx buffer suppressing metal dissolution, while multicomponent Pt 3 (FeCoNi) nanocrystals synergistically enhancing HER activity (137 mV@1 A cm −2 , 2.5 × lower than Pt/C) that thermodynamically favors redeposition. This dynamic self-adaptive mechanism maintains equilibrium under harsh operating conditions, demonstrating exceptional durability (>2200 h @1 A cm −2 and 1 000 000 cycles). The self-supported catalysts can be easily mass-produced with 8.87 wt.% Pt loading (60% reduction vs Pt/C), indicating its industrial applicability. The equilibrium-driven design paradigm opens new avenues for industrial proton-exchange-membrane devices operating under fluctuating power.

Dynamic template reconstruction induced mesoporous iridium catalysts for high-current-density PEMWE

Chenyang Wei,Cheng Liu,Zeyu Zhang,Kai Sun,Chengkun Xing,Wenjuan Shi,Youyong Li,Jian-Feng Li,Bo Zhang

Enhancing current density is a crucial strategy for reducing costs and improving the efficiency of green hydrogen production through water electrolysis. However, mass diffusion and proton transport limitations under high-current densities remain serious obstacles. Here, we proposed a novel strategy to construct a three-dimensional mesoporous skeleton structure of IrO 2 to address the limitations. By utilizing the dynamic loading of Ir nanoparticles during the La 2 O 3 template reconstruction process, high-density embedding of ultra-small Ir nanoparticles in the template is achieved. During the electrochemical process, in situ oxidation of Ir nanoparticles combined with template leaching results in the formation of a three-dimensional, mesoporous IrO 2 structure. The developed catalyst enables proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) to achieve stable operation for over 2,700 h at a current density of 5 A cm −2 with a voltage degradation rate of ∼0.38 μV h −1 , which meets the 2030 EU Clean Hydrogen JU target and 2026 US Department of Energy (DOE) target.

Ir single-atom sites stabilized by Ir-O-Ce4-δ coordination for high-efficiency PEMWE

Jianying Wang,Xu Luo,Tongzhou Li,Jingchen Na,Wanxiu Pang,Hongjie Zhang,Jinkai Hao,Zhigang Shao

Developing efficient and stable single-atom catalysts (SACs) for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) offers a promising direction toward achieving economical and sustainable development of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, their widespread application remains hindered by intrinsic stability challenges. Herein, we engineered an m-Ir SA -CeO 2 catalyst featuring an Ir-O-Ce 4-δ (0 < δ <1) coordination that delivered exceptional efficiency and stability in PEMWE. In this configuration, low-valent Ce species stabilized high-valent Ir active sites through lattice charge compensation, significantly enhancing catalyst activity and durability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations revealed electron transfer from Ir to Ce through the Ir-O-Ce 4-δ coordination, which optimized oxygen intermediate adsorption in the adsorbate evolution mechanism and reduced the ionic character of Ir O bonds to boost intrinsic activity and structural stability. The m-Ir SA -CeO 2 achieved a 267 mV overpotential with >500 h stability at 10 mA cm −2 in 0.1 M HClO 4 . Furthermore, the PEMWE electrolyzer employing the m-Ir SA -CeO 2 anode catalyst maintained stable operation at 100 mA cm −2 for >1000 h with an ultralow Ir loading of 0.12 mg cm −2 .

Ir single atoms unlock bridging-oxygen microenvironment enhances ultrastable OER in PEMWE at ampere-level current densities

Yuqi Yan,Guokang Han,Dongyue Xin,Xiaodan Wen,Qinghai Ma,Jiannan Du,Chunyu Du

Ir SA tailors the microenvironment to activate bridging oxygen for acidic OER. • Ru-O bri -Ir enhances bridging-oxygen basicity, accelerating water deprotonation and stabilizing lattice oxygen. • Ir SA -RuO 2 achieves 1 A cm −2 at 1.63 V with 2325 h durable PEMWE operation. Catalyst development for proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) has long been focused on a metal-site-centric paradigm, with Ru or Ir centers regarded as the primary lever for tuning oxygen evolution through adsorption and electronic-structure engineering. Yet, meaningful gains in device performance remain elusive. This paradox suggests that alternative strategies beyond the metal active site may play a crucial role in governing the oxygen evolution reaction in PEMWE. Here, we report a strategy that activates the latent functionality of bridging oxygen by engineering a tailored microenvironment within Ru-O bri -Ir motifs. This configuration enhances the basicity of bridging oxygen, transforming it from a passive lattice spectator into an active basic site that promotes deprotonation in the rate-determining step (RDS), thereby accelerating oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics under acidic conditions. Meanwhile, the regulated microenvironment suppresses excessive oxidation and lattice oxygen loss, leading to substantially improved stability. The Ir SA -RuO 2 catalyst requires an overpotential of only 196 mV to deliver 10 mA cm −2 and maintains stable operation for over 1500 h in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . When integrated into a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer, it sustains continuous operation at 1 A cm −2 for 2325 h (over three month) under 80 °C pure-water. Dynamic self-healing in high-entropy oxide bi-functional catalyst drives stable PEMWE at ampere-level current density

Wansen Ma,Xinyu Wang,Lingyan Zhou,Qian Li,Xuewei Lv,Jie Dang

Ruthenium exhibits catalytic activity comparable to that of iridium and platinum, yet at a substantially lower cost. However, its practical application is hindered by poor stability under acidic electrolyte conditions. Herein, we report a dynamic self-healing mechanism mediated by sustainable electron compensation in a LaRuCoMnVO x high-entropy oxide, which leads to a remarkable enhancement in catalytic durability. Furthermore, by optimizing the local electronic coordination environment, this strategy promotes the evolution of single active sites into dual active sites and reduces the adsorption energy. Benefiting from these synergistic effects, the catalyst demonstrates outstanding acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance, with overpotentials as low as 175 and 41 mV (at 10 mA cm -2 ), respectively. When integrated into a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), the system requires only 1.65 V to achieve a high current density of 1 A cm -2 and exhibits a minimal degradation rate of 12.9 μV h -1 . Both experimental and computational analyses confirm that sustainable electron donation to the Ru sites underpins the dynamic stability of the catalyst at ampere-level current densities. This electron compensation-driven self-healing strategy effectively eliminates the reliance on iridium and platinum, while simultaneously enhancing both activity and stability. Boosting PEMWE Performance Via the Local Electronic Regulation of Ir0.5Ru0.5/NbN Catalyst With Synergistic Vacancy and a Doping Engineering Strategy

Jin Qiu,Guoxiang Wang,Taipu Chen,Dahui Fang,Jinkai Hao,Xiaokang Yang,Yujiang Song,Zhigang Shao

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is an environmentally friendly and efficient technology for hydrogen production, playing a vital role in mitigating the fossil energy crisis and bridging renewable energy generation with hydrogen utilization. This work investigates an Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 nanocluster supported on the nitrogen-vacation-rich niobium nitride (Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 /NbN) for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Through defect engineering, the electron cloud density of Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 active sites is precisely modulated, thereby reinforcing strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) at interfaces. Concomitantly, Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 nanoclusters with high-density grain boundaries induce local charge rearrangement and orbital hybridization for precise d -band center downshift, are fabricated via a doping strategy, thereby accelerating the intrinsic reaction kinetics of OER. The Ir 0.5 Ru 0.5 /NbN catalyst exhibits excellent OER performance, achieving a low overpotential of 228 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and high stability, maintaining activity for 700 h without degradation. In addition, it presents outstanding performance as an anode in PEMWE with a cell voltage of 1.79 V at 2 A cm −2 . This work provides a viable and efficient approach to reduce Ir loading in PEMWE dramatically, offering a prospective strategy for the cost-effective generation of green hydrogen.

Pinning effect of lattice Pb suppressing lattice oxygen reactivity of Pb-RuO2 enables stable industrial-level electrolysis

Zhou Chenhui,Li Lu,Dong Zhaoqi,Lv Fan,Guo Hongyu,Wang Kai,Li Menggang,Qian Zhengyi,Ye Na,Lin Zheng,Luo Mingchuan,Guo Shaojun

Ruthenium (Ru) is widely recognized as a low-cost alternative to iridium as anode electrocatalyst in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). However, the reported Ru-based catalysts usually only operate within tens of hours in PEMWE because of their intrinsically high reactivity of lattice oxygen that leads to irrepressible Ru leaching and structural collapse. Herein, we report a design concept by employing large-sized and acid-resistant lattice lead (Pb) as a second element to induce a pinning effect for effectively narrowing the moving channels of oxygen atoms, thereby lowering the reactivity of lattice oxygen in Ru oxides. The Pb-RuO 2 catalyst presents a low overpotential of 188 ± 2 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and can sustain for over 1100 h in an acid medium with a negligible degradation rate of 19 μV h −1 . Particularly, the Pb-RuO 2 -based PEMWE can operate for more than 250 h at 500 mA cm −2 with a low degradation rate of only 17 μV h −1 . Experimental and theoretical calculation results reveal that Ru-O covalency is reduced due to the unique 6 s −2 p −4 d orbital hybridization, which increases the loss energy of lattice oxygen and suppresses the over-oxidation of Ru for improved long-term stability in PEMWE.

Distance effect of single atoms on stability of cobalt oxide catalysts for acidic oxygen evolution

Zhang Zhirong,Jia Chuanyi,Ma Peiyu,Feng Chen,Yang Jin,Huang Junming,Zheng Jiana,Zuo Ming,Liu Mingkai,Zhou Shiming,Zeng Jie

Developing efficient and economical electrocatalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is essential for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers (PEMWE). Cobalt oxides are considered promising non-precious OER catalysts due to their high activities. However, the severe dissolution of Co atoms in acid media leads to the collapse of crystal structure, which impedes their application in PEMWE. Here, we report that introducing acid-resistant Ir single atoms into the lattice of spinel cobalt oxides can significantly suppress the Co dissolution and keep them highly stable during the acidic OER process. Combining theoretical and experimental studies, we reveal that the stabilizing effect induced by Ir heteroatoms exhibits a strong dependence on the distance of adjacent Ir single atoms, where the OER stability of cobalt oxides continuously improves with decreasing the distance. When the distance reduces to about 0.6 nm, the spinel cobalt oxides present no obvious degradation over a 60-h stability test for acidic OER, suggesting potential for practical applications.

Modulation of the electronic structure of AuIr alloy anchor on vacancy–deficient Nb2O5-x as OER electrocatalyst for PEM water electrolysis

Guoxiang Wang,Taipu Chen,Dahui Fang,Jinkai Hao,Zhigang Shao

The development of highly active and stable catalysts of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role in proton-exchange-membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Herein, an electronic modulate was used to fabricate oxygen defect-rich and supported metal catalysts AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x , and it promoted the sluggish kinetics and low efficiencies of OER with the interaction between oxygen defects and the active sites. The Nb–O defect with an electron redistribution and manipulated active electronic state tailored the OER performance. The Ir actively exposed the AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x -500 catalyst, which exhibited a low overpotential of 230 mV and maintained an excellent stability for 200 h at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Furthermore, the PEMWE using AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x -500 as the anode revealed a high water-splitting performance (1.61 V @ 0.5 A cm −2 & 1.70 V @ 1 A cm −2 ). In-situ Raman spectra and theoretical calculations revealed the electronic structure of AuIr/Nb 2 O 5-x -500 and the mechanism of OER processes, which rationalized the improved performance through the synergistic effect of metal–support interaction and defect effect.

Interface-Engineering Strategy for Boosting Low-Ir Catalytic Water Oxidation Using a Conductive Ti4O7 Support

Yufeng Qin,Yifan Wang,Rou Wen,Longxiang Wang,Meiling Dou,Feng Wang

The need to use expensive and scarce Ir-based catalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hinders the large-scale application of proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). Herein, we present an effective interface-engineering strategy to boost the efficacy of low-Ir catalysis of OER by means of electron transfer and lattice oxygen stabilization at the catalyst–support interface by utilizing a highly conductive (∼960 S cm–1) Ti4O7 support to strongly anchor IrO2 nanoparticles. Experimental and theoretical calculations suggest that Ti4O7 tailors the Ir electronic structure that results from the formation of Ir–O–Ti bonds at the IrO2–Ti4O7 interface, resulting in a lowered d-band center that weakens the adsorption of oxygen intermediates on Ir sites and thus boosts OER catalysis. The Ir–O–Ti bonds formed at the interface stabilize lattice oxygen in IrO2, facilitating a stable lattice oxygen mechanism path for OER catalysis. The interface effect results in superior OER activity with an overpotential of 244 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a high mass activity of 1342.9 A gIr–1 (93.25× that of commercial IrO2), and the material also shows better durability than commercial IrO2. This interface-engineering strategy affords a strong catalyst–support interaction and should facilitate the design of high-performance catalysts for PEMWE applications.
