Abstract To develop high performance mixed matrix gel polymer electrolyte, the synergistic effect of blending PVDF (PEO/PVDF weigh ratio of 85:15) and adding nano-TiO 2 (0.5–2 wt.%) to traditional monomer poly (ethylene oxide) was investigated. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride) blend had an excellent thermal performance. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride) blend leads to lower crystallinity and the amorphicity of corresponding gel polymer electrolyte increases with increasing nano-TiO 2 concentration. The maximum ionic conductivity (2.12 × 10 −6 and 6.37 × 10 −6 S/cm) of poly (ethylene oxide)/-(TiO 2 ) 0.5 and poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride)/-(TiO 2 ) 0.5 gel polymer electrolyte at room temperature (25 °C) were obtained, respectively. The prepared poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride)-TiO 2 gel polymer electrolyte demonstrated about 2.6 and 1.8-fold increment in the fracture strength as compared to that of poly (ethylene oxide) gel polymer electrolyte and poly (ethylene oxide)-TiO 2 gel polymer electrolyte. The average transmittance of poly (ethylene oxide)/poly (vinylidene fluoride)-TiO 2 gel polymer electrolyte was about 90 % in the visible region. With good electrical, mechanical and optical performance, it is very suitable for being applied in electrochromic glass. Graphical Abstract

Lithium-ion batteries are pivotal in the development of advanced compact energy storage systems. In this study, the network-structured lithium iron phosphate-polyethylene oxide-polyvinylidene fluoride (LFP–PEO–PVDF) electrodes, the PEO electrolyte and PEO/LFP–PEO–PVDF composite electrodes were prepared by 3D gel printing (3DGP). The binder of the LFP–PEO–PVDF electrode is a PEO–PVDF composite binder, and the different PEO–PVDF ratios in the binder were varied with pure PEO (no PVDF), 9:1, 7:3 and 5:5, which corresponded to four electrode slurries. The results show that the electrodes printed with a PEO–PVDF ratio of 7:3 exhibited good shape retention capability and electrochemical performance. The printing slurry of 7:3-electrode had the apparent viscosity of 1.20 Pa s at a shear rate of 358.2 s −1 , which was suitable for printing. The electrochemical measurement results show that the capacity retention rates of the network-structured electrodes with 7:3-electrode was 85.5% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C. The incorporation of PVDF into the binder improved the structural retention capability and capacity retention rate of the electrode during cycling. The printed PEO electrolyte shows good shape retention and uniform thickness, with an ionic conductivity of 1.32 mS cm −1 at 60 °C. The PEO/LFP–PEO–PVDF composite electrodes demonstrate good interfacial contact between the electrode and electrolyte layers, and the composite electrodes delivered a specific capacity of 97.2 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 71.7% after 50 cycles at 0.1 C.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) are routinely regarded as potential candidates to replace conventional lithium-ion liquid electrolytes due to their high safety and energy density. Poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(vinylidene fluoride)/lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PVDF/PEO/LiTFSi) SPEs were prepared by a one-step electrospinning process and utilized in lithium metal batteries in this study. The electrospinning process enhanced the compatibility between PEO and PVDF, and induced the α to β -phase crystalline transition of PVDF. Consequently, the continuity of the conductive phase, the solubility and the migration ability of lithium ions within the polymer matrix were improved. Compared to PEO/PVDF/LiTFSi SPE prepared by a solution casting method, the electrospun SPE exhibited superior electrochemical performances at the same composition, achieving a lithium-ion transference number of 0.64 at room temperature and 0.60 at 60 °C. The assembled LiFePO 4 /SPE/Li cell shows a stable capacity of 112 mAh g −1 with a retaining capacity of 105 mAh g −1 after 400 cycles at the current density of 1 C at 60 °C, and the Coulombic efficiency is 100%. Functionalized separator is more competitive than commercial polyolefin separator for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. In this work, we design the separator modified by a composite coating layer, which is composed of Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO), poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) and lithium bis(triuoromethanesulfonyl) imide (LiTFSI) (LLZTO-PEO/PVDF-HFP/LiTFSI, LLZTO-PPL). The LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer gives an impressive effect on dendrite inhibition of lithium metal. In comparison with commercial polyolefin separator, smaller overpotential value and better Coulombic efficiency are observed for the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Li symmetric cells and the Li/LLZTO-PPL/Cu asymmetric cells at various current densities of 0.2, 0.5, and 1 mA cm–2. Moreover, the LLZTO-PPL composite coating layer modified separator exhibits better high-rate capability and cycle performance for these cells assembled with different kinds of cathode materials (LiFePO4, LiCoO2, and LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) and their counterpart of a lithium metal anode. The functionalized composite coating layer modified separator may be a more attractive candidate material for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

A composite solid polymer electrolyte (CSPE) is the best candidate in all-solid-state lithium metal batteries because of its flexibility, high safety, wide electrochemical stability, relatively high ionic conductivity, and excellent compatibility with the lithium metal. In this work, the garnet-type Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 (LLZTO) is introduced into a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/poly(vinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF–HFP)-based CSPE (PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE). The PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE possesses a high lithium-ion transference number of 0.47, a high ionic conductivity of 2.65 × 10–4 S cm–1, a wide electrochemical window of 5.55 V vs Li+/Li, and effective inhibition of lithium dendrite growth for 1000 h with a current density of 0.10 mA cm–2. Furthermore, the Li//LiFePO4 cell assembled with the PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE delivers superior rate capability and good cycling stability. Therefore, the PEO/PVDF–HFP/LLZTO CSPE is a very promising candidate for high-performance all-solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO)-based polymer electrolytes hold promise for application in solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, the high crystallinity of PEO poses a significant challenge to ion transport, particularly limiting its room-temperature performance. Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP), a semi-crystalline polymer with rigid fluorocarbon chains, can provide robust mechanical support to the electrolyte system. Herein, a quasi-solid electrolyte (QSE) was fabricated by using PEO and PVDF-HFP, in which succinonitrile (SN) was introduced as a plasticizer to enhance the electrochemical properties at room temperature. Innovatively, 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl-2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) was employed as a shield layer to prevent direct contact between the Li anode and the prepared SN-modified PEO/PVDF-HFP-QSE, thus forming a stable anode/electrolyte interface. The obtained TTE-P 8 P 2 S(12%)-QSE exhibits high room-temperature electrochemical properties, with an ionic conductivity of 4.02 × 10 –4 S cm –1 , a lithium-ion transport number of 0.47, and a wide electrochemical window of 5.4 V vs. Li + /Li. By interfacial modification, TTE-P 8 P 2 S(12%)-QSE can enable long-term cycling of LiCoO 2 cathodes and Li anodes, with an initial discharge capacity of 126.9 mAh g –1 , and achieve an average capacity of 142.8 mAh g –1 within 100 cycles at room temperature. Characterizations reveal that the incorporation of TTE preserves the structural integrity of the lithium electrodes, promotes efficient utilization of active lithium ions, and tailors the composition and structure of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the lithium metal anode, thereby substantially enhancing interfacial stability. This work provides a feasible strategy for building high-energy-density lithium metal batteries for room-temperature applications.

Solid electrolytes with desirable properties such as high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical stable window, and suitable mechanical strength, and stable electrode–electrolyte interfaces on both cathode and anode side are essential for high-voltage all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) to achieve excellent cycle stability. In this work, a novel strategy of using LiF and LiNO 3 as synergistic additives to boost the performance of PEO-PVDF/LLZTO-based composite solid electrolytes (CSEs) is developed, which also promotes the assembled high-voltage ASSLBs with dual-interfaces stability characteristic. Specifically, LiF as an inactive additive can increase the electrochemical stability of the CSE under high cut-off voltage, and improve the high-voltage compatibility between cathode and CSE, thus leading to a stable cathode/CSE interface. LiNO 3 as an active additive can lead to an enhanced ionic conductivity of CSE due to the increased free-mobile Li + and ensure a stable CSE/Li interface by forming stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li anode surface. Benefiting from the improved performance of CSE and stable dual-interfaces, the assembled NCM622/9[PEO 15 -LiTFSI]-PVDF-15LLZTO-2LiF-3LiNO 3 /Li cell delivers a high rate capacity of 102.1 mAh g −1 at 1.0 C and a high capacity retention of 77.4% after 200 cycles at 0.5 C, which are much higher than those of the ASSLB assembled with additive-free CSE, with only 60.0 mAh g −1 and 52.0%, respectively. Furthermore, novel cycle test modes of resting for 5 h at different charge states after every 5 cycles are designed to investigate the high-voltage compatibility between cathode and CSE, and the results suggest that LiF additive can actually improve the high-voltage compatibility of cathode and CSE. All the obtained results confirm that the strategy of using synergistic additives in CSE is an effective way to achieve high-voltage ASSLBs with dual-interfaces stability.

To address the issue of thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries while simultaneously enhancing their electrochemical performance, this study fabricated a sandwich-structured composite separator of PVDF-HFP@UIO-66/PEO/PVDF-HFP@UIO-66 via electrospinning, which was further enhanced by impregnation with PMMA. In this design, the two outer PVDF-HFP@UIO-66 layers aim to improve electrochemical performance and mechanical stability, while the PEO core layer enables thermal shutdown at approximately 67 °C. The composite separator exhibits high ionic conductivity (3.25 mS cm −1 ), excellent thermal dimensional stability, and good mechanical strength (13.6 MPa). Cells assembled with this separator achieved an initial discharge specific capacity of 166.2 mAh g −1 at 0.5C, with a capacity retention rate of 97.9% after 100 cycles, significantly outperforming cells using a commercial separator (133.1 mAh g −1 , 96.9%). Accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC) tests further confirm its exceptional safety, delaying the time to reach the thermal runaway critical temperature by 194.1 min and raising that critical temperature by 4.5 °C. This work presents an effective strategy for designing battery separators that combine high safety with superior electrochemical performance.

Solid-state poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) electrolyte exhibits a low ionic conductivity at ambient conditions, and large interfacial resistance between PEO and electrodes obstructs its applications in lithium metal batteries. Heterogeneous solid electrolytes (HSEs) are an alluring solution for the exploitation of PEO. Herein, PEO/poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)/micron-sized Li 1.4 Al 0.4 Ti 1.6 (PO 4 ) 3 (LATP) heterogeneous solid electrolytes are originally prepared to decrease the crystallinity of PEO and interfacial resistance between HSEs and electrodes. Heterogeneous solid electrolyte composed of PEO/PVDF-HFP/5% micron-sized LATP (PPL-5) exhibits superior electrochemical properties in ionic conductivity (3.01 × 10 −5 S cm −1 ), lithium transference number (0.55) at 30 °C, and a broad potential window (5.31 V). Li/PPL-5/Li symmetric cell displays a relatively stable potential response during 800 h cycling, authenticating long-term compatibility between the as-prepared electrolyte and lithium metal. LiFePO 4 (LFP) is used as a cathode to test the chemical and electrochemical stability of PPL-5. The discharge capacity of LFP/PPL-5/Li coin cell maintains 97.9 mAh g −1 at 0.8 C after 500 cycles with capacity retention of 86.7%. Such excellent performance of PPL-5 can be ascribed to the reduction of crystallinity of PEO and the improvement of the interfacial contact between electrolyte and electrodes, when PVDF-HFP and micron-sized LATP are simultaneously incorporated with PEO electrolyte.
