FeCo-LDH/Cd0.5Zn0.5S nanocomposite for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution coupled with plastic waste upcycling

Qiqi Gu,Shijin Cheng,Qiaoyi Xiao,Qianchen Ou,Hongmei Wang,Yuan Lian,Liping Guo

The FeCo-LDH/Cd 1-x Zn x S nanocomposite was synthesized via an impregnation method, employing FeCo-LDH as a cocatalyst for simultaneous upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics and photocatalytic hydrogen production. The 5 %LDH/Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S nanocomposite demonstrated an optimal hydrogen evolution rate of 3.67 mmol·g −1 ·h −1 in alkaline PET solution, which is 2.3 times higher than pristine Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S. Notably, the photocatalyst retained stable performance over six recycling tests without significant activity loss. Concurrently, PET oxidation by photogenerated holes yielded acetate as the primary product, achieving an 87 % yield. The real-world applicability of this approach was further validated through the successful photoreforming of a PET bottle. UV–vis DRS, TRPL, and PEC analyses revealed that the incorporation of appropriate amount of FeCo-LDH significantly enhanced charge carrier separation, thereby boosting the photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, UPS and DFT calculations elucidated the mechanistic pathway for PET conversion and hydrogen production over FeCo-LDH/Cd 0.5 Zn 0.5 S. This study presents a promising strategy for co-producing hydrogen and value-added chemicals from PET waste, highlighting its potential for practical recycling applications.

An effective strategy for degrading waste PET plastic into regenerated DMT with nearly equivalent methanol at relatively low temperature

Chunrui Rong,Dongxia Yan,Jiabao Li,Jian Feng,Jiayu Xin,Qing Zhou,Yi Li,Junli Xu,Xingmei Lu

The increase in the usage of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) leads to the generation of a large amount of waste, which may cause carbon emissions and waste of petroleum resources. The methanolysis method has attracted global attention, but limited by high reaction temperature and excessive use of methanol. We report here an efficient catalyst, tetramethylguanidine/1,5-diazabicyclo[4.3.0]-5-non-ene (TMG/DBN), converting waste PET into regenerated dimethyl terephthalate (rDMT) under 100 °C with almost equivalent methanol, achieving 100 % PET conversion and 93.1 % yield of rDMT. A series of analytical methods and theoretical calculations were used to reveal the enhanced interaction between the catalyst and reactants, which facilitates the degradation of PET at low methanol dosages. In addition, a kinetic model was also developed with a relatively low activation energy of 84.9 kJ/mol. This work provides an effective strategy for the up-grading recycling of waste PET under mild reaction conditions.

Electrochemical PET recycling to formate through ethylene glycol oxidation on Ni–Co–S nanosheet arrays

Yi Ma,Luming Li,Jialing Tang,Zongkun Hu,Yong Zhang,Huan Ge,Ning Jian,Jun Zhao,Andreu Cabot,Junshan Li

Plastics have become an integral part of modern society due to their excellent mechanical properties, light weight, chemical stability and low cost. However, their continuous production and use worldwide have resulted in a major environmental problem. In this context, the green degradation and upcycling of waste plastics using electrochemical oxidation present a promising solution. To make this solution practical, the development of cost-effective catalysts optimized for this reaction is essential. In this study, we propose a new catalyst for the electrocatalytic reforming of ethylene glycol (EG) derived from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) to formic acid. The catalyst comprises layered Ni–Co9S8 nanosheet arrays (NSAs) grown on nickel foam (NF) via the hydrothermal method. Under EG oxidation reaction (EGOR) conditions, the Ni–Co9S8 NSAs/NF catalyst achieves Faraday efficiencies (FEs) of up to 92%. Additionally, the direct use of commercial PET plastic powder hydrolysate still enables formate FEs to exceed 90%. These outstanding results are rationalized using density functional theory (DFT) calculations providing insights into the role of the different elements in the EGOR. Overall, this study demonstrates both a synthetic strategy for transition metal sulfides and an efficient and sustainable strategy for the upgraded recycling of PET plastics.

A novel method to chemically convert waste PET plastic into high–value monolithic materials with excellent flame retardancy, mechanical strength and hydrophobicity

Gao Bingying,Sun Xuzhang,Wang Can,Yao Chao,Mao Linqiang

Pyrolysis or dissolution of waste PET plastics (WPP) by specific solvents, which is inevitable in the resource’s secondary utilization, will lead to chemical bond fracture thus resulting in loss of mechanical strength. This greatly restricts the secondary utilization of WPP. We proposed a simple and economical new chemical method to transform WPP into a high–value monolithic material, which not only solves the problem of environmental pollution, but also provides a new idea for the disposal of WPP. The new high temperature resistant chemical structure Al–O–P–O–Al was successfully generated through the reaction of high temperature resistant adhesive Al(H 2 PO 4 ) 3 (AHP) with the monomer or polymer from dissolved WPP. New chemical bonds such as –OH, C = O, C–Cl, P = O were also formed in the transformed monolithic material structure, and they were the principal reason for the increase in mechanical strength of monolithic material. The original hydrophilic group on the surface of the monolithic material was replaced by the hydrophobic group –CH 3 after the treatment by triethoxyoctylsilane (TS). Ultimately, the resulting monolithic material exhibited good comprehensive properties of high flame retardancy, flame retardancy (~ 1300 °C), mechanical strength (maximum compressive strength of 29.1 MPa), and hydrophobicity (water contact angle: 110°). This work has important implications for solving the serious problem of a sharp decline in mechanical strength and inflammability in the reuse of WPP.

Enhanced degradation activity of PET plastics by fusion protein of anchor peptide LCI and Thermobifida fusca cutinase

Yidi Liu,Zhanzhi Liu,Xuehong Guo,Ke Tong,Yueheng Niu,Zhiyu Shen,Hanzhi Weng,Fengshan Zhang,Jing Wu

The substantial accumulation of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste in the environment has exacerbated the issue of plastic pollution. The biodegradation of PET plastics using biological enzymes has garnered considerable attention due to its efficiency and environmentally friendly nature. Nevertheless, the low binding affinity of PET plastics presents a significant limitation to the application of biocatalysts in their degradation. This study endeavors to engineer a fusion protein comprising the anchor peptide LCI, derived from Bacillus subtilis A014, and a thermally stabilized variant of Thermobifida fusca cutinase, D204C/E253C (Tfuc2), with the objective of augmenting its polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degradation efficacy. The findings demonstrate that LCI exhibits a high binding affinity for PET, and the hydrolytic efficiency of the LCI-containing fusion protein is enhanced by a factor of 1.8–34.5 compared to the free Tfuc2 enzyme. The enzymatic characteristics and molecular dynamics simulation outcomes indicate that the improved hydrolytic efficiency of PET may originate from the flexible oscillatory behavior of LCI, which exhibits a high binding affinity for PET. This study presents a novel methodology for the enzymatic degradation of PET plastic waste.

Waste PET plastic-mediated synthesis of manganese- and cobalt-doped RuO2 catalyst for electro-oxidation of water with robust stability

Yunxing Zhao,Denian Li,Xuanyuan Ni,Pengcheng Cai,Guanghao Chen,Dongsheng Xia,Zixu Sun,Haoran Yuan

With numerous PET plastics being discarded, mankind is faced with serious environmental challenges. Innovative upcycling strategy to convert waste PET into functional materials is receiving attention. Meanwhile, water electrolysis is an environmentally friendly way for hydrogen production, but is limited by expensive catalysts. RuO 2 , as a potential alternative catalyst, is insufficient in stability and activity. Accordingly, we propose a novel OER catalyst (Ru x Mn 1.2 Co 0.8 O y ) converted from waste PET plastics via a bimetallic-MOF pathway, which partially retains the stacked nanorods structure and forms Mn,Co-doped RuO 2 with decreased particle size. The Ru x Mn 1.2 Co 0.8 O y delivers an overpotential of 214 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and operates stably over 500 h; moreover, the method is generalizable to diverse PET plastics. Theoretical calculations reveal the Ru sites adjacent to Mn- and Co-doped sites have low overpotential and favorable activity. This work provides a strategy for the high-value recycling of plastics resources and the development of OER electrocatalyst.

Waste PET Plastic-Derived CoNi-Based Metal–Organic Framework as an Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Yaxin Wang,Huimin Wang,Shuyuan Li,Shaorui Sun

Recycling waste PET plastics into metal–organic frameworks is conducive to both pollution alleviation and sustainable economic development. Herein, we have utilized waste PET plastic to synthesize CoNi-MOF applied to lithium battery anode materials via a low-temperature solvothermal method for the first time. The preparation process is effortless, and the sources’ conversion rate can reach almost 100%. In addition, the anode performance of MOFs with various Co/Ni mole ratios was investigated. The as-synthesized Co0.8Ni-MOF exhibits excellent crystallinity, purity, and electrochemical performance. The initial discharge and charge capacities are 2496 and 1729 mAh g–1, respectively. Even after 200 cycles, the Co0.8Ni-MOF electrode can exhibit a high Coulombic efficiency of over 99%. Consequently, given the environmental and economic benefits, the Co0.8Ni-MOF derived from waste PET plastic is thought to be an appealing anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Towards recycling purpose: Converting PET plastic waste back to terephthalic acid using pH-responsive phase transfer catalyst

Yueqing Wang,Hongxing Wang,Hongmei Chen,Hantao Liu

Converting polyethylene terephthalate (PET) wastes to its monomer and valuable chemicals via eco-friendly chemical method is still a challenge task. Previously, phase transfer catalysts used for alkaline hydrolysis were soluble in reaction media and hardly separated after reaction. Here, we reported several pH-responsive catalysts combined alkyl quaternary ammonium units with heteropolyacid anion for achieving stepwise product/catalyst separation and catalyst recycling. The properties of homogeneous/heterogeneous transfer behavior allow catalyst to be easily separated from reaction media by adjusting of pH value. Among them, [C 16 H 33 N(CH 3 ) 3 ] 3 PW 12 O 40 (abbreviated as [CTA] 3 PW) exhibits the highest activity and the most suitable pH responsive values. Such a pH triggered switchable catalytic system not only shows good performance for depolymerization of pure PET, but also some real PET wastes such as coloured trays and PE/PET complex films could be completely degraded into terephthalic acid. Additionally, the reaction kinetics and activation energy of PET alkaline hydrolysis also studied with and without pH-responsive [CTA] 3 PW.

Molten salt-assisted valorization of waste PET plastics into nanostructured SnO2@terephthalic acid with excellent Li-ion storage performance

Ali Reza Kamali,Siyuan Li

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is one of the most widely used plastic materials, and therefore, its clean, efficient and low-cost valorization into high-value materials is of substantial economic and environmental interest. Here, for the first time, the utilization of molten salts for the facile, scalable and fast depolymerization of PET into terephthalic acid (C 8 H 6 O 4 ) is reported. It is asserted that the simple heat-treatment of PET in molten KCl-LiCl containing SnCl 2 in air leads to the green preparation of nanocrystalline terephthalic acid embedded with SnO 2 nanocrystals, with an excellent performance as the anode of lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The structural, morphological, thermal, surface, electrical and electrochemical characteristics of plastic-derived nanocomposites are evaluated by various techniques. The sample prepared at 500 °C (PDN-500) contains 28.3 wt% SnO 2 , and exhibits an enhanced bulk electrical conductivity of 447.3 S m −1 , and an excellent Li-ion storage capacity of 498 mAh g -1 after 500 cycles, corresponding to 1657 mAh per gram of SnO 2 . This performance is accompanied by an enhanced lithium ions diffusion coefficient of 8.51 × 10 −10 cm 2 s −1 recorded after 300 cycles, and a capacitive storage contribution of above 42 %. The sustainability of the presented molten salt approach is discussed from two complementary points of view, in terms of the clean conversion of waste plastics into high-performance anode materials for LIBs, as well as the facile and scalable depolymerization of PET, reducing the waste plastics in our environment. This article proposes an efficient and green strategy for the valorization of waste plastics into nanostructured SnO 2 @terephthalic acid for energy storage applications .

Efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts for coproduction of formate through electrocatalytic oxidation of PET-derived ethylene glycol coupled with CO2 reduction

Yan Fang,Chengcheng Cai,Hiromi Yamashita,Xufang Qian,Yixin Zhao

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CRR) to produce value-added chemicals offers a sustainable strategy to address energy crisis and climate change. However, the conventional CRR is always coupled with the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), suffering from large overpotential, and high energy consumption. To overcome this, we proposed an alternative system by pairing CRR with the electrocatalytic oxidation of ethylene glycol (EGOR), a product derived from the depolymerization of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic waste. This novel coupled system enabled the simultaneous production of formate on both electrodes, achieving the dual utilization of plastic waste and CO 2 . In this study, we developed a commercially viable system combining a robust NiOOH electrocatalyst synthesized through a facile electrodeposition for EGOR with a low-cost Bi 2 O 3 electrocatalyst for CRR. The NiOOH electrocatalyst achieved Faradaic efficiencies over 88 % for EG oxidation into formate within a broad potential window (1.4–1.8 V RHE ), while Bi 2 O 3 delivered Faradaic efficiencies more than 90 % for CO 2 -to-formate conversion within −0.8 to −1.2 V RHE . When integrated in a two-electrode configuration, the EGOR/CRR system produced formate at both electrodes with Faradaic efficiencies above 85 % across a wide cell voltage (2.0–2.6 V), requiring a ∼300 mV lower cell potential compared to the OER/CRR system. This coupled system reached commercial-level current densities above 200 mA cm −2 or 400 mA cm −2 at 3.0 V when implemented in the flow cell or the MEA cell, respectively. These results demonstrated the potential to use waste-derived reactants and commercially accessible eletrocatalytsts to realize energy-efficient and scalable conversion into formate.

Rational multienzyme architecture design with iMARS

Jiawei Wang,Xingyu Ouyang,Shiyu Meng,Bowen Zhao,Liangxu Liu,Chaofeng Li,Hengrun Li,Haotian Zheng,Yihan Liu,Ting Shi,Yi-Lei Zhao,Jun Ni

Biocatalytic cascades with spatial proximity can orchestrate multistep pathways to form metabolic highways, which enhance the overall catalytic efficiency. However, the effect of spatial organization on catalytic activity is poorly understood, and multienzyme architectural engineering with predictable performance remains unrealized. Here, we developed a standardized framework, called iMARS, to rapidly design the optimal multienzyme architecture by integrating high-throughput activity tests and structural analysis. The approach showed potential for industrial-scale applications, with artificial fusion enzymes designed by iMARS significantly improving the production of resveratrol by 45.1-fold and raspberry ketone by 11.3-fold in vivo , as well as enhancing ergothioneine synthesis in fed-batch fermentation. In addition, iMARS greatly enhanced the in vitro catalytic efficiency of the multienzyme complexes for PET plastic depolymerization and vanillin biosynthesis. As a generalizable and flexible strategy at molecular level, iMARS could greatly facilitate green chemistry, synthetic biology, and biomanufacturing.

Ball-milled PET plastic char as an electron shuttle accelerated anaerobic degradation of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in water environment

Hyokchol Mun,Cholnam Ri,Qinglong Liu,Lan Wang,Jingchun Tang

1 The combination of carbonaceous materials and microbial degradation is an attractive measure in improving the removal efficiency of organic pollutants in water environment. In this study, the anaerobic dechlorination in a coupled system of ball-milled plastic chars (BMPCs) and the microbial consortium were investigated. The anaerobic microorganism cultured from raw sludge (CAM) contributed to the dechlorination of the 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) into 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) as the final product via ortho -dechlorination in all testing groups. The dechlorination rate was accelerated in different BMBC plus CAM groups than that in only CAM group (0.048 d −1 ), of which, it was greater in BMPC-500 plus CAM group (0.375 d −1 ) than that in BMPC-700 plus CAM group (0.171 d −1 ). The electron exchange capacity (EEC) of BMPCs decreased with the increase of pyrolysis temperature (0.053 mmol e − /g for BMPC-500 and 0.037 mmol e − /g for BMPC-700), which directly affected anaerobic dechlorination. Direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) of BMPCs also boosted the biogas yield by 1.5 times compared to that without BMPCs. Microbial community analysis illustrated that BMPCs helped to enrich the putative dechlorinating bacteria. The abundance of Clostridium_aenus_stricto _12, as a dominant dechlorinator, significantly increased from 0.02 % to 11.3 % (without BMPCs), 39.76 % (BMPC-500) and 9.3 % (BMPC-700), and followed by, Prevotella and Megaspheara , which was reported to take part in anaerobic dechlorination and digestion as H 2 producers, also increased in the presence of BMPC. This study contributes to the realization of 2,4,6-TCP in-situ reduction technology and provides a scientific reference for anaerobic dechlorination by cultured anaerobes combined with BMPCs.
