Efficient adsorption removal of anionic dyes by waste PET-derived MIL-101(Cr)

Shaoan Cheng,Yangxi Li,Zhen Yu,Yuqing Su

Adsorption can be used as a pollutant removal method to solve the increasingly serious problem of synthetic dye pollution and metal organic framework (MOF) is considered as a novel adsorbent for its unique structure. However, the high cost and high toxicity during the synthesis procedure of MOFs like MIL-101(Cr) limited their potential on the large-scale production and application. In this paper, waste PET plastic was depolymerized to prepare terephthalic acid (TPA) as an organic linker to synthesize MIL-101(Cr). Besides, Hydrofluoric acid (HF) was not added during the synthesis to avoid poisonous pollution. MIL-101(Cr) was applied to the adsorption of anionic dyes reactive red 2 (RR2) and reactive blue 19 (RB19). The batch experiments exhibited kinetic data best fitted the pseudo-first-order model (PFO) with the adsorption capacity of 662.87 (RR2) and 863.67 mg g -1 (RB19). The isotherm adsorption data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm, indicating formation of multilayer coverage over the surface of MIL-101(Cr). The highest regeneration rate of MIL-101(Cr) at the fourth cycle was 91.18 and 91.44 % after RR2 and RB19 adsorption. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) technique and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy both indicated the possible adsorption mechanism of MIL-101(Cr) toward RR2 and RB19 could be attributed to electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and the π-π stacking. This work proposed a novel method using waste plastics as raw materials to synthesize eco-friendly pollutant adsorbent, which had an enlightening effect on pollutant treatment.

Acoholysis behavior of PET waste with hybrid fibers and their application in the synthesis of unsaturated resins

Ou Juhua,Dai Zilin,Kong Zhenxing,Yang Rui

A novel fiber-derived unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) was synthesized through alcoholysis and polycondensation by using PET and hybrid fibers as raw materials. The effects of alcoholysis conditions including alcoholysis time, temperature, initiator concentration, type of alcoholysis agents and amount of hybrid fibers on the alcoholysis behavior were investigated by HPLC, LC–MS and GPC. A comprehensive analysis of the fiber-derived UPR was conducted under different reaction conditions and discussed by FTIR, viscosity, acid value and mechanical properties. HPLC results indicated a strong correlation between the maximal peak area in spectrometry and the yield of main glycol products. It was established that the alcoholysis of PET with hybrid fiber samples mainly obtain alcoholysis monomers and dimers by using glycol as an alcoholysis agent. It was discovered that less alcoholysis products was obtained with lower diethylene glycol. The molecular weight of glycolyzed products are oligomers based on a alcoholysis reaction time reached above 3 h. Under the optimal conditions, PET: EG: zinc acetate = 1.0: 2.0: 0.3 (wt%), 200 ℃, 3 h, PET/PU was completely alcoholyzed and produced oligomers. The performance of liquid UPR and its cured product have been investigated. The UPR prepared by PET/PU was utilized as a fiber source unsaturated resin, meeting the standards for organic artificial stone. This article highlighted the potential usage of PET with hybrid fibers in unsaturated resin.

One-step fabrication of robust Stenocara beetle-inspired membrane deriving from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste for enhancing emulsion separation

Zengxin Zhuang,Kai Wu,Tao Zhang,Yuqi Li,Dongya Yang,Xuejie Yue,Fengxian Qiu

The purification of emulsified water from waste oil has become a major research topic. Stenocara beetle-inspired wettable membranes have emerged as separating-efficient designs for purification of oil due to surface energy difference and surface roughness driven demulsification, but they are still suffering from tedious preparation and low robustness. Herein, a one-step electrospinning/electrospraying process was employed to construct Stenocara beetle-like membrane using waste PET and tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) as raw materials for water-in-oil emulsion separation. Specifically, the synchronized deposition process combines electrospinning high-hydrophobic PET fiber membrane and electrospraying superhydrophilic TiO 2 particles (superhydrophilic bumps) generated from hydrolysis of TBT on the PET membrane surface, leading to a similar structure to Stenocara beetle. During the separation process, the bumpy superhydrophilic TiO 2 particles can capture and aggregate tiny water droplets even though the droplet size is smaller than the membrane pore size. Moreover, this Stenocara beetle-like structure exists both on the surface and interior of the samples, resulting in the boosted demulsification ability and excellent separation efficiency up to 99.8 % and flux as high as 6392 L m -2 h −1 . Stenocara beetle-like membrane also exhibits strong mechanical properties and strain of the membrane is up to 128.8 %. Even after the friction test, the membrane maintained cycling stability and abrasion resistance with separation flux higher than 3500 L m -2 h −1 . Overall, this efficient one-step strategy can open up new avenues to fabricate advanced superwetting membranes in the field of emulsion separation.

Upcycling PET waste into high value-added p-xylylenediamine (PXDA): A route to diversify PET-derived chemicals

Songlei Mo,Xiaohui Liu,Yanqin Wang

The upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into value-added chemicals is of great interest. However, the diversity of currently accessible PET-derived high-value products remains limited, posing a significant challenge to expanding their scope. Herein, we report a three-step catalytic process for converting PET waste into p-xylylenediamine (PXDA)—an essential monomer for producing high-market-value polyamides, polyimides, and nonisocyanate polyurethanes. Specifically, PET is first transformed into terephthalamide (TP) via ammonolysis, and subsequently dehydrated to terephthalonitrile (TPN), the key intermediate for PXDA synthesis. Successful separation of each intermediate ensures efficient hydrogenation of TPN to PXDA, achieving an overall PXDA yield of 54.5 % from PET. Furthermore, the transformation of common real plastic waste and scale-up experiments demonstrate the robustness and substantial industrial potential of this catalytic route. This study establishes a viable and promising strategy for upcycling PET waste into high value-added product PXDA, significantly broadening the scope of PET-derived chemicals and stimulating further exploration of other valuable derivatives.

Upcycling PET wastes into high value-added 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) via tandem reactions

Songlei Mo,Jia Kou,Jianrong Zeng,Kepeng Song,Yayun Zhang,Shangming He,Yongfeng Hu,Yong Guo,Xiaohui Liu,Xi Chen,Yanqin Wang

Upcycling polyethylene terephthalate (PET) wastes into high value-added oxygenated chemicals is desirable, yet it remains challenging. Herein, we develop a novel strategy to convert PET into 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) via two steps, the conversion of PET to dimethyl 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylate (DMCD) over Ni-based catalysts, followed by the hydrogenolysis of DMCD to CHDM over a CuMgAl catalyst. The key step is the production of DMCD from PET in one-pot reaction and an unprecedent yield of 86.5% DMCD yield is achieved over Pd-modified Ni/CeO 2 catalyst, which to the best of our knowledge is the highest yield reported to date. Comprehensive characterizations demonstrate that the addition of Pd enhances hydrogen dissociation, but weakens the adsorption activation ability for C–O bond in esters, thus DMCD selectivity is improved. Over CuMgAl catalyst, DMCD is directly converted into CHDM with 83.8% yield. Furthermore, the techno-economic analysis proves the economic feasibility of converting PET into CHDM via our proposed strategy. The study provides a promising and effective approach to upcycle PET wastes into high value-added products.

Efficient H2 Production from PET Plastic Wastes over Mesoporous Carbon-Supported Ru-ZnO Catalysts in a Mild Pure-Water System

Hongcai Su,Yanjun Hu,Hongyu Feng,Lingjun Zhu,Shurong Wang

The massive consumption of plastic is posing severe pollution-related challenges globally. As the most abundant polyester plastic, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste represents a largely untapped resource for generating chemicals and fuels. However, the current widespread use of alkali/organic solvents and the complex processing of PET reduce its environmental sustainability. Herein, a novel and simple one-pot strategy was first reported for the catalytic conversion of PET into H2 fuel and terephthalic acid in a pure-water system under mild conditions. A high H2 yield of 19.97 mol/kgPET and carbon conversion efficiency of 97.22% were obtained for the Ru-5ZnO/mesoporous carbon (MEC) catalyst at a low temperature of 250 °C. This process proceeds through tandem catalytic reactions with an initial PET depolymerization step, followed by in situ aqueous phase reforming (APR) of ethylene glycol of Ru. Remarkably, ZnO inhibited the deactivation of Ru/MEC in the PET depolymerization stage, causing an increase in H2 production from the in situ APR stage. Importantly, this strategy was successfully applied to four types of real-world PET waste and their mixtures, demonstrating that it has considerable potential in practical applications and provides a sustainable and clean solution to the plastic waste problem.

Enhanced degradation of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) wastes by fusion cutinase: Effects of anchor and linker peptides

Qingjun Jia,Zixuan Zhang,Lankai Su,Shu Bai,Di Cai,Changjing Chen,Linling Yu,Yan Sun

Enzymatic degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) into its corresponding monomers provides an attractive route for green plastic recycling and environmental remediation applications. However, the binding of PET hydrolases toward the PET surface is a rate-limiting step in PET degradation. Hence, we selected three anchor peptides and four linker peptides to fuse the previously engineered leaf-branch compost cutinase for facilitating enzyme binding and improving degradation of real post-consumer PET wastes of Coca Cola and C′eastbon PET bottles, with using the amorphous PET as a control. The systematical characterization of the seven cutinases revealed that the anchor peptide with moderate hydrophobicity plus chaperone activity and the flexible linker peptide with small hydrophobicity but long length were more suitable for each domain to serve its own role, affording the facilitated PET binding affinities and enhanced PET degradation performance. Thus, the optimal fusion cutinase possessed up to 3.3 times higher catalytic efficiency ( k cat / K m ) and 76 % increased long-term degradation performance than the parental cutinase, respectively. Further, complete degradation of C′eastbon PET wastes and 77 % degradation of Coca Cola PET wastes were achieved by the optimal cutinase of 33.3 nmol·g −1 PET in 96 h, proving its superiority against the real post-consumer PET wastes.
