Post-polymerization functionalization to a novel phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing polyether coating for flame retardant treatment of PET fabric

Jianrong Xia,Yumiao Su,Wenmu Li

Concerns about the rising trend of stringent fire safety regulations and demands for reduction in the fire hazard call for a careful evaluation of the environmental impact of flame retardant materials choices. With the worldwide bans and restrictions in the use of traditional halogen-based fire retardant systems, phosphorus/nitrogen synergistic flame retardants became evident. We report here a novel phosphorus- and nitrogen-containing polyether (PN-PEO) prepared by post-polymerization functionalization. The resultant polyethers (PN-PEO) were subsequently coated onto the surface of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics by a simple solution-dipping method to exploit a highly efficient fire retardant. It was found that the loadings of 17.8% PN-PEO had a strong barrier effect in the char layer of the PN-POE-coated PET fabrics after exposed to the torch flame, and resulted in complete suppression of PET fabrics ignition on radiant heat exposure. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Construction of protective layer on PET fabric by utilizing hydrophilic-hydrophobic interactions for sensing, flame retardancy and thermal management properties

Weiwen Gu,Jian Liu,Xiaowei Su,Peng Qi,Xinyu Cui,Yujia Wang,Hongfei Li,Xiaoyu Gu,Jinping Xiong,Jun Sun,Sheng Zhang

Multifunctional fabrics for thermal management are becoming increasingly essential in a wide range of application scenarios. However, existing thermal management fabrics exhibit insufficient performance and shortcomings in environmental tolerance. The main challenge lies in the interactions between multiple protective additives, which often lead to detrimental effects on functionality and mechanical properties. This study innovatively develops a multifunctional protective PET fabric (PET/APTES-PSA@Cu-2) by utilizing γ-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES) and phosphorous acid (PSA) to incorporate copper particles into the fabric. This design not only achieves thermal management but also integrates sensing, fire safety, and multiple protective functions. The PET/APTES-PSA@Cu-2 fabric demonstrates excellent electrothermal performance at −60 °C, reaching a peak temperature of 22 °C at 0.4 V. At 422 °C, the fabric achieves a high-temperature insulation efficiency of 248 %. The fabric combines mechanical reinforcement and protective functions, including enhanced tensile strength, abrasion resistance, antibacterial properties, and room-temperature self-healing capabilities. It also exhibits excellent flame-retardant performance, with a 46.56 % reduction in peak heat release rate and a 70.17 % decrease in average effective heat of combustion. Notably, it significantly reduces the smoke toxicity of phosphorus-based flame-retardant PET fabrics (CO production is reduced by 132.43 %, aldehydes are nearly eliminated, and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are significantly decreased). Additionally, PET/APTES-PSA@Cu-2 exhibits excellent sensing capabilities, effectively enabling joint health monitoring and thermotherapy. This study provides an effective approach for developing multifunctional protective fabrics with broad application prospects in fields such as firefighting, military equipment, aerospace, and high-performance sportswear.

Efficient radiative cooling and super-hydrophobic ZnO/P(VDF-HFP)-PDMS coated fabric

Weiyang Guo,Lixin Song,Huijia Wang,Jingzhao Liu,Ni Li,Yili Zhao,Jie Xiong

Radiative-cooled textiles are attracting attention because they can spontaneously lower the microenvironmental temperature of the human body. The radiative cooling and hydrophobic fabric was prepared by two-step dip-coating on PET fabric with a ZnO/P(VDF-HFP) as radiative cooling coating and a PDMS hydrophobic wear-resistant layer. The effect of morphology (sheet, hexagonal prism, flower, and rod) of ZnO nanomaterial on the radiative cooling property of the coated fabric was examined. Among the four types of ZnO, the ZnO sheets have the highest sunlight reflectivity of 0.827. Besides, P(VDF-HFP) is a binder that loads ZnO onto PET fibers and enhances the solar reflectivity of coated fabric by reflecting visible light. Hence, the ZnO sheet/P(VDF-HFP)-PDMS (Z S PP) coated fabric possessed a solar reflectance of up to 91.3 % under the synergistic effect of ZnO sheets and P(VDF-HFP), and due to specific functional groups (e.g. C–F, C–Si) in the hybrid coating, and its mid-infrared emissivity reached 93.2 %. As a result, the Z S PP coated fabric were 7.1 °C cooler than the PET fabric under direct sunlight, with an average cooling efficiency of 72.6 W·m −2 . The coated fabric demonstrated well-hydrophobic and durability properties due to the PDMS, making them much more suitable for use in complex outdoor environments.

Preparation of Superhydrophobic Fabrics via Chemical Self-Healing Strategy and Their High Oil/Water Separation Performance and Enhanced Durability

Lili Liu,Yuxing Shan,Maoyuan Pu,Xiuli Zhao,Yawen Huang

The ability of a fabric to restore its superhydrophobicity after damage is utilized to prepare highly durable fabrics for oil/water separation. A physical self-healing concept is a conventional way to improve durability. However, this method cannot recover the oil/water separation performance when serious damage appears. In this work, a chemical self-healing concept to solve the above problem is proposed. Self-healable silicon rubber (SR), which is cross-linked by cobalt-based coordination bonds, is coated on silica@polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabrics. The modified fabric exhibits superhydrophobic characteristics with a contact angle of 158°, high oil/water separation efficiency (≈99%), and high durability. After damage, these modified fabrics enable fast self-healing at room temperature (in just 10 min) and maintain their oil/water separation efficiency above 98%. For conventional SR-modified silica@PET fabrics, their superhydrophobicity and oil/water separation efficiency significantly decreases under identical damaging. Thus, this study provides a new path for the development of various room-temperature self-healable superhydrophobic fabrics.

A novel and simple method of printing flexible conductive circuits on PET fabrics

Zehong Wang,Wei Wang,Zhikang Jiang,Dan Yu

Flexible conductive circuits on PET fabrics were fabricated by a simple approach. Firstly, well dispersed nano-silver colloids with average size of 87   nm were synthesized with poly (vinyl pyrrolidone). Then, by adding polyurethane and thickening agent into these colloids, Ag NP-based ink was produced and printed on PET fabrics by screen printing. Conductive patterns were achieved through the swelling process of polyurethane and the decrease of contact resistance between nano-silver particles when immersed in dichloromethane (DCM) and diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) mixed solution. After it was dried at 40   °C,the surface resistivity was about 0.197   Ω   cm with width 1.9   mm, and thickness 20   μm. Moreover, the effects of different DCM contents on the conductivity and the film forming ability have been investigated. We believe these foundings will provide some important analysis for printing flexible conductive circuits on textiles.

In situ hydrothermal growth of Cu NPs on knitted fabrics through polydopamine templates for heating and sensing

Deshan Cheng,Xue Bai,Junjie Pan,Jihong Wu,Jianhua Ran,Guangming Cai,Xin Wang

Incorporating conductive components into fibrous structure for wearable applications has attracted research attention recently. However, utilizing the flexibility and wearability of textiles to maintain a stable and durable wearable performance is a big challenge, as the intrinsic properties of textiles and the conductivity of the incorporated components have to work synergically in the fibrous system without compromising. In this work, polydopamine-templated PET fabrics were prepared to grow copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) on the surface of the knitted PET fabrics. The surface morphology, chemical composition and crystalline structure of the Cu NP-coated PET fabrics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that Cu NP layer was successfully deposited onto the polydopamine-templated PET fabrics. The fabrics showed excellent electrical conductivity due to the loading of Cu NPs. The unique knitted structure together with the durable deposition of Cu NPs resulted in negative change in electrical resistance of the fabrics under strains, granting the fabrics the potential in wearable applications. The Cu NP-coated PET fabrics were demonstrated to be applicable as wearable strain sensors and electrical heaters.

Pressure responsive PET fabrics via constructing conductive wrinkles at room temperature

Zehong Wang,Wei Wang,Dan Yu

Thanks to the booming development of wearable electronics, finding a facile approach to integrate electronics to textiles becomes attractive. However, many disadvantages such as trivial fabrication steps, limitations of textile substrate types and unavoidable damage to textiles’ natural properties, have hampered the development of wearable electronics. In this work, pressure responsive PET fabrics were produced through a facile fabrication of conductive PET fabrics. Firstly, fine conductive adhesives (CA) with good printing performance were prepared by utilizing alcohols-assisted dispersion to prevent Ag NPs’ aggregation tendency in waterborne polyurethane (WPU). Then, screen printing on PET fabrics and subsequently treated with solvent system that consisted diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC), dichloromethane (DCM) and ethanol to construct conductive wrinkles at room temperature. With the help of WPU’s swelling, the conductive path was generated by Ag NPs spontaneous aggregation and the as-prepared conductive PET fabrics demonstrated outstanding electric conductivity (0.01   Ω·m). Finally a simple self-assembly PET fabrics pressure sensor based on the conductive PET fabrics exhibited superior performance, including the synchronous response to thumb pressing (frequency was 0.5   Hz), precisely distinction current of different weights, decent bending stability, fast response (63   ms) and relaxation time (23   ms), simultaneously possessing advantages of low cost and facile fabrication process. Based on its superior performance, the PET fabric sensor was developed to monitor the human fist behavior at different frequency (0.25   Hz and 1   Hz) and its good real-time response current, meeting the potential application requirements in wearable electronics and “smart textiles” for monitoring human’s movement behavior.

Flame-retardant and anti-dripping coating for PET fabric with hydroxyl-containing cyclic phosphoramide

Chenxi Zhang,Chao Zhang,Jiewen Hu,Zhiming Jiang,Ping Zhu

To prepare flame-retardant anti-dripping of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fabric, a hydroxyl-containing cyclic phosphoramide named as 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediol-(2′-hydroxyethyl) phosphoramidate (DPHP) was synthesized and was coated on PET fabric by dip-coating technology. The flame retardancy, non-dripping performance and thermal stability of DPHP-coated PET fabrics were investigated by limiting oxygen index (LOI), vertical flammability, cone calorimetry tests and thermogravimetric analysis (TG). It was found that DPHP can enhance the char forming for PET, which endows the PET fabrics with excellent flame retardancy and non-dripping behavior. Although the LOI had a little increase with low content of DPHP (9.6 % weight gain), the non-dripping performance was observed. With the continuous increase of DPHP content, LOI was increased to 27.6 % and the damaged length was only 7.9 cm. After coating with DPHP, the char-forming ability of PET fabrics was improved and heat release was significantly reduced during the combustion. By analyzing the char residues by SEM-EDX, worm-like appearance and a large amount of phosphorus-based compounds were found in the char residue, indicating that DPHP owns efficient condensed-phase flame-retardant action for PET fabrics. This work suggests that hydroxyl-containing cyclic phosphoramide as a flame retardant is an effective way to develop flame-retardant and anti-dripping PET materials.

A fluorescent functionalized PET fabric with dual-response to aqueous copper and pH

Shichang Chen,Shixiang Fan,Gang Zhao,Xuhai Fu,Farao Zhang

A fluorescent functional PET fabric for effective aqueous copper detection was developed. Eu(TTA) 3 ·2H 2 O complex was prepared by the solvothermal method and subsequently PET fluorescent nonwoven fabrics were prepared by coordinating the complexes with PET nonwoven fabrics grafted with acrylic acid. The chemical structure and microscopic morphology of the fluorescent nonwovens were analyzed, and the effects of different experimental conditions (grafting rate, reaction time, and fluorescent complex concentration) on the fluorescence properties of the materials were investigated. Under optimal experimental conditions, the fluorescent nonwoven fabric exhibited a fluorescence intensity of 2.1 × 10 5  a.u. and a quantum yield of 6.35%. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of the fluorescent nonwoven fabric decreased with the increase of aqueous copper concentration, and the quenching effect could be described by the Stern-Volmer equation. Furthermore, adjusting the pH of the aqueous copper at a fixed concentration revealed a linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity and pH. These observations demonstrate a dual response of the fluorescent nonwoven fabric to both aqueous copper and pH, enabling its potential application in the detection of both analytes.

Flexible stretchable electrothermally/photothermally dual-driven heaters from nano-embedded hierarchical CuxS-Coated PET fabrics for all-weather wearable thermal management

Qi Zhang,Dong Liu,Wei Pan,Haiyan Pei,Kunlun Wang,Shengang Xu,Yingliang Liu,Shaokui Cao

The multifunctional photoelectronic devices are recently attracting much more attention due to their potential enlarged applications. The flexible stretchable electrothermally/photothermally dual-driven heaters for all-weather wearable thermal management are presented in this work with nano-embedded hierarchical Cu x S-coated PET fabrics. Herein, the hierarchical nano-embedded Cu x S film is fabricated via a simple chemical bath method for high electrical conductivity and highly efficient inelastic collision of electro/photo-generated carriers. The hierarchical nano-embedded Cu x S morphology produces the low sheet resistance of 1.26 Ω sq -1 and the super low total heat transfer coefficient of 3.256 × 10 -5 W/ o C·mm 2 , which lead to the high-efficient electro/photo-dual-driven heating effect in the Cu x S@PET fabrics. The saturated temperature on the as-fabricated flexible wearable heaters reaches up to 172 °C. The thermal conversion devices also bear the excellent stability, reproducibility, stretchability, controllability and corrosion-resistant characteristics. Interestingly, their excellent thermal conversion performance could be achieved by freely exchanging the driving power sources, such as electricity-supplying equipment, 635-nm laser, infrared physiotherapy lamp and solar simulator, which provides a necessary precondition for the all-weather applications of flexible wearable heaters. The as-fabricated electro/photo-dual-driven heaters on the Cu x S@PET fabrics have the promising applications in wearable electronics, all-weather self-heating facilities, out/in-vivo physiotherapy, and so on.

Designing Photothermal Superhydrophobic PET Fabrics via In Situ Polymerization and 1,4-Conjugation Addition Reaction

Zheng Xiong,Haiyang Yu,Xiao Gong

This study demonstrates a simple and fast method to integrate superhydrophobicity, UV protection, and photothermal effect onto PET fabrics. The surface of PET fabric forms a hierarchical rough structure through in situ oxidative polymerization of the pyrrole (Py). The 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between pentaerythritol tetraacrylate, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, and octadecyl acrylate not only endows the PET fabric with superhydrophobicity but also forms a cross-linked network structure which improves the stability of multifunctional coatings on the surface of the PET fabric. In addition, the wettability of the prepared PET fabric is investigated by adjusting the Py monomer and octadecyl acrylate concentration. The results reveal that the prepared PET fabrics exhibit obviously superhydrophobic behavior with a contact angle of 155.8°. The surface temperature of the superhydrophobic PPy/PET fabric can rise to 91 °C under a simulated sunlight which is much higher than the pristine PET fabric, while reaching basically the same steady-state in five heating/cooling cycles. The prepared PET fabric also possesses excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and solar light absorption performances. Furthermore, the superhydrophobic PET fabric exhibited excellent stability against 180 °C high temperature, strong UV radiation, different pH solutions and organic solvent erosion, 8 h washing tests, and 25 sandpaper abrasion cycles. These findings provide a path for the future development of multifunctional fabrics using fluorine-free environmentally friendly materials.
