Mimicked by the structure of dimethyl sulfoxide propionate (DMSP), a novel zwitterion monomer of N-methylacryloyl S-methyl l-cysteine methyl sulfonium salt (NMASMCMS) was synthesized and characterized for the first time through three steps using l-cysteine as a starting material. Poly(NMASMCMS) brushes were constructed on PET sheets via surface-initiated reversible addition–fragmentation chain-transfer (SI-RAFT) polymerization. The physical and chemical structures were characterized by water contact angle (WCA), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The polymer brush grafted sheets (PET-B) had good hydrophilicity and high lubricity. Moreover, PET-B sheets exhibited excellent antifouling and hemocompatible properties with low protein adsorption, bacterial adhesion, platelet adhesion, and hemolysis.

The tethering of silver nanowires (AgNWs) on the optical polymeric membrane is regarded as one of the most applicable strategies constructing flexible transparent conductive electrodes (FTCEs) meeting the growing demand from flexible electronics. However, it remains a challenge to establish reliable connections between AgNWs and polymeric surface enhancing the foldable stability of FTCEs without alternating the transparency. Herein, a bifunctional interfacial engineering strategy was proposed, synergizing covalent anchoring and passivation shielding to concurrently achieve folding stability, silver migration suppression, environmental stability, and retained optical transparency. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) surface was decorated via carbene, which was able to insert to C-H bonds instantaneously with the chain propagation hardly observed, forming the quasi-monolayer of thiol groups covalently connected with the most top layer of the PET substrate, without altering the transparency. The adhesion strength between AgNWs and PET surface was greatly enhanced by the Ag-S bonds, where the AgNWs surface frame and the sheet resistance showed no significant change after 100 seconds ultrasonic treatment in DI water and 1000 times folded, respectively. The surface decoration endowed the prepared FTCEs with high visible light transparency (85%), low sheet resistance (11.5 Ω/sq) and high infrared reflectivity (65%) simultaneously. Fluorinated alkyl chains were covalently decorated on the prepared FTCEs, forming the Ag-S bonds and protecting the electrode from the invasion of moisture, which effectively suppressed Ag migration. The presenting surface modification strategy provides a robust solution for constructing long-term stable AgNWs based FTCEs.

The multiplex and simultaneous determination of blood glucose, creatinine and uric acid is essential for the early screening of chronic diseases or regular disease monitoring. Here, we report for the first time a biosensing array for the multiplex and simultaneous determination of plasma glucose, creatinine and uric acid. The sensing electrodes are fabricated on a PET surface, including three working electrodes, one reference electrode, and one counter electrode. Each specific enzyme is immobilized on its corresponding working electrode. The biosensing array can exhibit high sensitivity and selectivity for the simultaneous determination of blood glucose, creatinine and uric acid in real blood samples, and the measurement results are accurate and consistent with those from the clinical biochemistry analyzer in the hospital. It is expected that this work could provide new avenues for the fundamental study of biosensing device construction, as well as practical applications of the detection of biomarkers in chronic diseases.
