Poly(ethylene terephthalate- co -1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate) (PETG) is a versatile engineering plastic with excellent properties and has been widely used in heat-shrinkable films, sheets, and packaging. A series of PETG with various contents of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene (CHDM) content was synthesized by transesterification and polycondensation. The PETG synthesized in this work has less DEG by-product content and exhibits excellent combined properties. This is attributed to the fact that the transesterification process leads to the formation of methoxy terminal groups (–OCH 3 ) in PETG, which exhibit higher stability compared to hydroxyl terminal groups (–OH). In addition, the properties of PETG can be controlled at the macromolecular structure level by simply regulating the content of CHDM. The chemical structure, thermal properties, mechanical performance, rheological properties, and heat shrinkage performance of PETG were systematically studied. The results demonstrated that CHDM content significantly influenced crystallization behavior, glass transition temperature ( T g ), thermal stability, and rheological properties. This work offers a theoretical foundation for advancing high-performance PETG and proposes novel synthesis strategies for applications. The results of this research support the promotion of the wide application of PETG materials in the packaging, medical, electronics, and automotive industries, especially in environmental protection and sustainable development, providing new development directions and solutions for the industry.

In this work, a series of 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM)-based copolyester fibers are prepared by chemical structure design and crystal structure regulation. The chemical structures of poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene terephthalate, (PETG)) copolyesters are first confirmed by 1 H- and 13 C-nuclear magnetic resonance which indicates that all copolyesters are random copolyesters. Then, the crystallization and melting behavior, thermal stability, and mechanical properties of copolyesters are significantly affected by the CHDM content and CHDM cis-trans isomerism ratio, showing that trans-CHDM can effectively improve the comprehensive performance of PETG copolyesters. Besides, the influence of the CHDM monomer (amount and cis-trans isomerism ratio) and melt-spinning drawing process on the crystal structure and mechanical properties (tensile strength, elongation) is also investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, and tensile testing. Especially, the resultant PETG30-trans80 copolyester fibers exhibit good mechanical properties, and the tensile strength and elongation are 113.9 MPa and 136.5%, respectively. Therefore, our work provides a promising strategy for the fabrication of copolyester fiber. Highlights Bio-based PETG copolyester was obtained. Synergistic effects of a chemical structure and drawing process of PETG fiber were discussed. The influence of drawing process on crystallization, and orientation of fiber properties was studied.

In this study, a new class of citrate-based polyesters (CPs) with excellent UV (ultraviolet) absorption characteristics was designed and synthesized from a series of diols and a derivative of citric acid and cysteine (thiazolopyridine dicarboxylic acid, TPDA). The as-prepared CPs enhanced the UV shielding performances of a widely used thermoplastic resin, poly(ethylene terephthalate-co-1,4-cylclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate) (PETG) when incorporated through physical blending. The results revealed that TPDA endowed the CPs with high UV absorption efficiency, and the polymeric state endowed the CPs with excellent thermal stability. Moreover, these CPs exhibited good compatibility with PETG due to similarities in their chemical structures. The UV shielding performances, mechanical properties, and stability of CP/PETG blends were also investigated. The data indicated that the 2% addition of CPs endowed the CP/PETG blends with full-band UV shielding performance; however, the thermal stability and mechanical properties of PETG remained unaffected. In summary, the green synthetic approach of TPDA combined with the advantages of CPs makes the as-prepared biobased polymeric UV absorbers very promising for future UV shielding applications.

The development of intrinsically photostable polymers through molecular design remains a persistent challenge in materials science. Here, a series of polyethylene terephthalate-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (PETG) copolyesters with precisely tailored trans-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (trans-CHDM) contents were synthesized via one-pot copolymerization. The successful stereochemical control of CHDM units was verified by 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. For the first time, the structure-property relationship between the trans-CHDM content and the UV-aging resistance of PETG was systematically established. Increasing the trans-CHDM content was shown to increase the glass transition temperature and the thermal stability of the copolyesters. Remarkably, higher trans-CHDM levels led to significantly improved photostability, as evidenced by superior mechanical retention, reduced chain scission, and minimal structural degradation during prolonged UV-irradiation. Mechanistic investigations revealed that the increased UV resistance stems from a narrowed optical bandgap and, more critically, an efficient photothermal conversion pathway. The latter is facilitated by heightened intramolecular friction in high-trans polymers, which promotes nonradiative energy dissipation and effectively mitigates photooxidative damage. Within the series, PETG-40-80% achieves an optimal balance between UV durability and mechanical performance, positioning it as a promising candidate for high-performance, weather-resistant applications. This work highlights the stereochemical control of comonomers as a potent strategy for increasing the photostability of polyester materials.

Prolonged use of clear aligners promotes bacterial colonization and biofilm formation, which can compromise orthodontic outcomes. There is a clear clinical demand for approaches that can suppress pathogenic activity while preserving the fundamental functional and material characteristics of the aligners. To address this need, a novel strategy of fabricating metal–organic framework (MOF) coatings on aligners was adopted. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising antibacterial coating materials by combining antimicrobial metal ions with biocompatible organic ligands. Three distinct porphyrin-based MOFs (Ag-, Cu-, and Ce-TCPP) were synthesized and fabricated as coatings on clear aligner surfaces via a coordination-driven self-assembly approach. The coated aligners were comprehensively assessed in vitro to determine their antibacterial performance, anti-inflammatory potential, biocompatibility, and key physical characteristics. Among the three coatings, Ag-TCPP showed the most favorable overall antibacterial and anti-biofilm performance in the present experimental system and facilitated macrophage polarization toward an anti-inflammatory M2-like phenotype. Ag-TCPP exhibited a significant inhibition zone of 6.75 ± 0.25 mm and reduced biofilm biomass by 72.2%. All MOF coatings exhibited excellent biocompatibility, and their application did not compromise the aligners’ mechanical integrity or aesthetic properties (light transmittance). This study reports the successful development of a novel metal–organic framework (MOF)-based coating strategy for clear aligners. Among the formulations investigated, the Ag-TCPP coating exhibited outstanding antibacterial and immunomodulatory performance while maintaining the critical mechanical integrity and aesthetic qualities of the aligner. The findings of this work offer a practical approach to designing multifunctional orthodontic devices that may reduce biofilm-related complications and improve clinical outcomes.
