Phosphogypsum (PG) constitutes a form of solid byproduct emanating from the manufacturing process of wet-process phosphoric acid. The fabrication of one metric ton of wet-process phosphoric acid entails the generation of approximately five tons of phosphogypsum, a highly prolific and economically viable waste stream. If we can effectively solve the problem of poor hydrophobicity of phosphogypsum, it is possible to replace cement and other traditional cementitious materials. In this way, we can not only improve the utilization rate of phosphogypsum but also obtain significant economic and environmental benefits. In the present investigation, hydrophobic surface coatings were synthesized and applied onto the surface of α-hemihydrate phosphogypsum (α-HPG) utilizing sol–gel processing and impregnation techniques. After hydroxylating α-HPG with alkaline solution (OH-α-HPG), titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2) hybridized with perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTS) were grafted on its surface. The assessment of the hydrophobic properties of the coatings was conducted through water contact angle measurements, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses. The contact angle remained above 124.2° after strong acidic and alkaline immersion and 50 tape adhesion experiments with good chemical stability and durability, and the mechanism of surface hydrophobicity modification was discussed. The experimental outcomes demonstrated a notable increase in the hydroxyl group concentration on the α-HPG surface following hydroxylation, significantly enhancing the attachment rate of PFDTS and TiO2 onto the HPG surface. PFDTS and TiO2 can undergo chemical interaction with hydroxyl groups, facilitating their robust adsorption onto the surface of OH-α-HPG through chemisorption mechanisms. After bonding the OH-α-HPG surface with PFDTS and TiO2 via hydrogen bonding, the otherwise hydrophilic α-HPG surface acquired excellent hydrophobicity (OH-α-HPG-PT, contact angle (CA) = 146.7°). The surface modification of α-HPG through hydroxylation and hydrophobicity enhancement significantly augmented the compatibility and interfacial interplay between α-HPG and PT. This research successfully enhanced the hydrophobic properties of α-HPG, profoundly showcasing its immense potential within the construction industry and the realm of comprehensive solid waste utilization.

Coatings with superamphiphobicity and photocatalytic degradation properties to achieve excellent self-cleaning performance have received extensive attention. Herein, TiO 2 -SiO 2 composite particles with micro-/nanoscale hierarchical structures were fabricated by hydrophobic agglomeration. The TiO 2 -SiO 2 was modified with 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (PFDTS), and then it was sprayed onto the surfaces of substrates to obtain TiO 2 -SiO 2 /PFDTS coatings. The coating surface exhibited superamphiphobicity and low adhesion properties. The contact angles (CAs) of water, ethylene glycol, glycerol, and hexadecane on the coating surface were 163.5°, 154.6°, 157.3°, and 150.2°, respectively. The slide angles (SAs) of the above droplets on the coating surface were 0.4°, 2.7°, 1.6°, and 11.1°, respectively. In addition, 80.9 % methyl orange solution (10 ppm) was degraded by the TiO 2 -SiO 2 /PFDTS under UV irradiation in 60 min, demonstrating an excellent photocatalytic degradation performance. It also had good adaptability to different substrates, liquids with different properties, and outdoor environments. The results of a mechanistic study showed that SiO 2 and TiO 2 were connected by the carbon chains of modifiers. PFDTS and TiO 2 -SiO 2 might be combined by chemical bonds or surface carbon chains. The hierarchical structure of TiO 2 -SiO 2 and the low surface energy of PFDTS resulted in the superamphiphobic property of the TiO 2 -SiO 2 /PFDTS coating.

Water-induced degradation threatens sandstone cultural relics, highlighting the need for effective protection. This study applies a nano-coating of PFDTS-modified TiO 2 /SiO 2 to sandstone, optimizing PFDTS concentration, coating penetration depth, and hydrophobicity. A TiO 2 -to-SiO 2 ratio of 75:25 with 80 μL of PFDTS achieved high water and oil contact angles of 152.7° and 145.7°, respectively. After 210 h of UV exposure, contact angles showed minimal reduction, confirming the coating's durability. Additionally, air permeability is preserved to maintain sandstone breathability. These findings provide valuable insights for safeguarding sandstone heritage sites against weathering.

Superamphiphobic materials have a higher and broader application value compared to superhydrophobic materials. Nevertheless, durability has always been an obstacle to its practical application. Herein, we report a method that utilizes 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFDTS) as an esterification reaction modifier agent for kaolin, and polyurethane as adhesive binding to substrates, so as to construct inorganic/polymer composite coatings , for obtaining a durability superamphiphobic material. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterization reveal that kaolin is successfully grafted by PFDTS. Thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry tests exhibit that the material can withstand temperatures up to 400 °C. The self-cleaning test demonstrates that the as-prepared coating is repulsive to a variety of liquids such as water, milk, mud, olive oil, and n-hexadecane, which has a surface tension as low as 27.5 mN/m. It still maintains superamphiphobicity after the material is polished by sandpaper and the retention rate is above 96 % when the friction distance is about 4500 cm. After soaking in strong acid and strong base, it shows superior acid resistance and favorable alkali resistance. After aging durability irradiation for 300 min, it still retains superamphiphobicity. In addition, the biological contamination resistance tests indicate that it has a certain adhesion resistance to gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli . Therefore, it is a promising kind of durable anti-fouling material for underground oil pipelines and construction.

A novel bilayer superhydrophobic film was constructed on Cu substrate by a simple multi-step process. First, (3-mercaptopropyl) trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) molecules were self-assembled onto the pre-etched Cu surface via covalent bonding followed by hydrolysis and condensation, then 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFDTS) were grafted onto the resultant hydroxyl terminated surface via the Si-O-Si bonding. The so-prepared sample was defined as Cu-MPTMS-PFDTS. The structure and morphology of the samples were characterized by means of contact angle measurement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The corrosion behaviors of the films were evaluated by Tafel plot and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on an electrochemical work station. The results indicated that the bilayer superhydrophobic film possessed better corrosion protection as compared with the control samples. The superiority of the corrosion protection was mainly ascribed to the following two aspects: the superhydrophobicity and polysiloxane micro-structures of the Cu-MPTMS-PFDTS. Self-cleaning films with superhydrophobicity and photocatalytic capability have attracted considerable interest in recent years for the synthetical chemical and physical self-cleaning performance to overcome individual inherent limitations. In the present work, a dual-functional self-cleaning film is proposed through the design of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanopillar array, swelling absorption of anatase-typed TiO 2 nanoparticles , and final low-surface-energy modification of 1 H ,1 H ,2 H ,2 H -perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PFDTS). Benefiting from the hierarchically mountain-like structure constructed by the PDMS nanopillar array and swelling absorbed TiO 2 nanoparticles , the self-cleaning film presents a robust superhydrophobicity to resist chemical and mechanical damages (e.g. solvent/acid/alkali immersion, stretching, water impact, and sand abrasion). Combining the photocatalytic activity with adequate loading of TiO 2 nanoparticles, the self-cleaning film demonstrates a great degradation capability of organic pollutants with a degradation efficiency over 98 %. Importantly, owing to the superhydrophobicity repairability induced by the migration of fluorocarbon chains, the self-cleaning film can highly recover the water repellency with a water contact angle (WCA) of 155 o even after long-term irradiation under UV light. The findings conceivably promote the development and application of the self-cleaning materials with superhydrophobic and photocatalytic properties.
