Small compounds are often utilized to adjust the cathode interface of organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their low batch change, easy synthesis, unambiguous chemical structure, and low cost. In this work, the alcohol-soluble small molecule material Glycolic acid was doped into the electron transport material Poly(9, 9-bis(3′-( N , N -dimethyl)- N -ethylammoniumpropyl-2, 7-fluorene)- alt -2, 7-(9, 9-dioctylfluorene)) dibromide (PFN-Br) to modify the performance of the cathode interface layer (CIL). The CIL doped with Glycolic acid has better surface morphology, which is conducive to charge transport and extraction. In addition, the introduction of Glycolic acid improves the hydrophilicity of CIL, makes the metal electrode have good contact with CIL, and helps to improve the stability of the OSCs. Additionally, it suppresses the device's trap-assisted recombination and bimolecular recombination, hastening exciton dissociation and charge collection. As a result, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OSCs based on PM6: Y6 blend film has risen from 15.26% to 15.91%. After 312 hours of stability testing, the aforementioned doped devices still have device performance higher than standard device. Furthermore, based on PBDB-T: IT-M mix film, the PCE of the doped device and reference device was 11.29% and 10.55%, respectively. This study suggests that using the alcohol-soluble small-molecule material Glycolic acid can increase the organic solar cells' (OSCs') efficiency. This study provides a new method for manufacturing high-performance OSCs.

Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) for full-color displays based on inkjet printing technology are increasingly attractive. For potential applications, fabricating high-quality perovskite films with defined-pixel sizes is crucially important. The key issue is how to control the contact properties between the perovskite ink and a hole transport layer (HTL). In this study, a novel strategy is proposed by using the poly[(9,9-bis(3′-((N,N-dimethyl)-N-ethylammonium)-propyl)-2,7-fluorene)- alt -2,7-(9,9-dioctylfluorene)] dibromide (PFN-Br) polar polymer to modify the HTL surface, instead of conventional O 2 plasma method. The PFN-Br can enhance the surface energy of HTLs, including PVK, Poly-TPD, TFB, etc., and improve the wettability of perovskite inks on the HTL due to its polar quaternary ammonium groups. Besides, the PFN-Br acts as the easier nucleation to induce a tiny crystallization of perovskites. On the other hand, the diphenyl phosphate liver (DPA) is first used to mix in perovskite inks to optimize the perovskite film phase distribution and the elimination of uncoordinated Pb 2+ , resulting from interactions between PEA + and DPA, Pb 2+ and DPA, respectively. As a result, a defined-pixel matrix green quasi-2D PeLED with the peak external quantum efficiency over 10% via inkjet printing technique is achieved, which is the most efficient matrix green PeLEDs fabricated by inkjet printing technique so far.

Within organic solar cells (OSCs), the cathode interface layer (CIL) is indispensable for promoting the transport and extraction of charges. In this research, an environmentally friendly and cost-effective trans-cinnamic acid (TCA) is doped into PFN-Br to serve as the CIL in OSCs. The molecular structure and electronic structure of TCA were studied in this article using density functional theory (DFT) calculations executed with the Gaussian’16W software. The calculation results based on DFT indicate that TCA exhibits excellent planarity and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) matching with PFN-Br. Excellent planarity and matched energy levels are advantageous for charge transport and harvesting. Doping TCA into the PFN-Br cathode interface layer improved charge extraction efficiency, and reduced charge recombination phenomena. Consequently, this led to a notable amplification in the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PBDB-T: IT-M -based non-fullerene devices, achieving an impressive 11.32%. This study furnishes an uncomplicated and cost-effective strategy for improving the PCE in OSCs.

The appearance of the cathode interlayer (CIL), a transition bridge between the cathode and the organic photoactive layer (OPL), provides a new pathway for the performance improvement of organic solar cells (OSCs). PFN-Br is widely employed in many optoelectronic devices, including nonfullerene OSCs, to transport electrons and improve charge injection at the interface. However, due to the relatively low conductivity of PFN-Br, the thickness of the CIL prepared with PFN-Br is usually less than 10 nm, which evidently contradicts the requirements for large-scale roll-to-roll manufacturing. Herein, a strategy using N-α-carbobenzyloxy-d-Arginine (NA) as the doping material is proposed to improve the performance of PFN-Br. The homogeneous distribution of NA in PFN-Br can modify the work function (WF) of PFN-Br and facilitate an interface dipole arrangement that is favorable for charge transfer, resulting in binary CILs with a tunable WF and increased conductivity. To verify this method, a series of devices were prepared with PBDB-T:IT-M or PM6:Y6 as the OPL and different proportions of NA in the CIL. The use of PFN-Br:NA (0.75:0.06, in weight%) in devices helps to improve the OPL morphology, making it exhibit a trend of fiber network structure, leading to a higher fill factor and short circuit current density. Consequently, the optimal power conversion efficiency (PCE) based on the PBDB-T:IT-M and PM6:Y6 is increased from 10.5% to 11.1% and from 15.4% to 16.0%, respectively. In addition, the NA-doped device exhibits better nitrogen stability after 360 h of dark storage compared to the control. The discovery of these modification approaches provides insight into the hybrid cathode interlayers required for efficient and reliable nonfullerene OSCs.
