Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent organic pollutant found in various industrial effluents, posing significant environmental and health risks. Electrosorption of PFOA on MXene-polyaniline film from water was studied. The results of electrosorption kinetics showed that the functionalized MXene film with polyaniline resulting in an approximately 100 % increase in electrosorption capacitance for PFOA due to increasing of the MXene film's volumetric capacitance and modifying of surface chemistry of MXene. The maximum adsorption of PFOA on MXene and MXene-polyaniline films were 358.5 mg/g and 966.1 mg/g, respectively, at an initial concentration of 100 mg/L upon application of +1.0 V. Moreover, humic acid (HA) competing with the adsorption sites, sodium chloride through the double-layer compression effect, and pH affecting the amine or amide functional groups on MXene-polyaniline which inhibited PFOA adsorption onto MXene-polyaniline film were thoroughly examined. Lastly, the reversible adsorption–desorption cycles show that the MXene–polyaniline film possesses the potential to be used continuously. To address PFAS pollution in water sources, we think our approach can help build effective and long-lasting technology.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an emerging contaminant of concern due to its toxicity for human health and ecosystems. However, successful degradation of PFOA in aqueous solutions with a cost-effective method remains a challenge, especially for groundwater. In this study, the degradation of PFOA using activated persulfate under mild conditions was investigated. The impact of different factors on persulfate activity, including pH, temperature (25 °C–50 °C), persulfate dosage and reaction time, was evaluated under different experimental conditions. Contrary to the traditional alkaline-activated persulfate oxidation, it was found that PFOA can be effectively degraded using activated persulfate under acidic conditions, with the degradation kinetics following the pseudo-first-order decay model. Higher temperature, higher persulfate dosage and increased reaction time generally result in higher PFOA degradation efficiency. Experimental results show that a PFOA degradation efficiency of 89.9% can be achieved by activated persulfate at pH of 2.0, with the reaction temperature of 50 °C, molar ratio of PFOA to persulfate as 1:100, and a reaction time of 100 h. The corresponding defluorination ratio under these conditions was 23.9%, indicating that not all PFOA decomposed via fluorine removal. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer analysis results indicate that both SO4−• and •OH contribute to the decomposition of PFOA. It is proposed that PFOA degradation occurs via a decarboxylation reaction triggered by SO4−•, followed by a HF elimination process aided by •OH, which produces one-CF2-unit-shortened perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs, Cn−1F2n−1COOH). The decarboxylation and HF elimination processes would repeat and eventually lead to the complete mineralization all PFCAs.Keywords:PFOA;activated persulfate;free radicals;defluorination

Adsorption is well accepted as an effective method for perfluorinated compounds’ (PFCs) removal from water among various conventional methods. However, development of adsorbents that combine good performance of PFC removal and regenerability has not yet been realized. This work demonstrated the fabrication and application of an ammoniated magnetic adsorbent for efficient and economical PFOS and PFOA removal. Functional ammonium groups and γ-Fe 2 O 3 were effectively incorporated in the particle with the proposed method. These fabricated magnetic particles presented superior adsorption performance for PFOS and PFOA with short equilibrium time of 120 min and high adsorption capacity. The isotherms revealed that the adsorption process belonged to multilayer sorption with their intricate interactions including anion exchange and hydrophobic interaction. The magnetic particle maintained its removal efficacy over a wide pH range of 3–9 or with coexisting substances. Moreover, the regeneration and reuse of the magnetic particle were successfully carried out with PFOS and PFOA removal efficiency sustained higher than 80% in 15 consecutive treatment cycles. Along with the efficient adsorption and easy separation of adsorbents, we expect that this ammoniated magnetic particle can serve as an excellent alternative for PFOS and PFOA removal from water.

The study of the metabolic toxicity of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is of great importance in assessing its potential impact on aquatic organisms and the aquatic environment, and provides a fundamental scientific basis for environmental protection and sustainable development. In this study, an electrospray ionization (ESI) source capable of direct analysis of solution samples was combined with a high-resolution Orbitrap Fusion Tribrid mass spectrometer to investigate the metabolic perturbations induced by different concentrations of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and their correlations in skin mucus and liver tissue of tilapia. Seven common metabolites were found in mucus and liver, and nitrogen metabolism pathways were disturbed in all of them. The up-regulation of glutamate in mucus may reflect an increased demand for amino acids and energy, whereas the down-regulation of glutamate in the liver may lead to dysregulation of nitrogen metabolism, protein synthesis and amino acid metabolism. Enrichment analyses suggest a dysregulation of nitrogen metabolism pathways, which may lead to impaired maintenance of tissue function and dysregulated energy metabolism in tilapia.

Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous in the environment and have raised global concern. However, little is known about the microbial response to biochar remediation of PFAS contaminated soil. An indoor experiment was conducted to investigate how microbial community changed when exposed to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) pollution (1 mg/kg) and 3% (w/w) biochar amendment. Results showed that PFOA contamination decreased bacteria diversity and altered microbial composition. Phylum Actinobacteria and genera Gaiella , Blastococcus , Solirubrobacter , and Knoellia were the biomarkers in the PFOA treatments. PFOA pollution decreased the interaction between bacterial genera compared with the control group. PICRUST predictions showed that the C cycling functional genes of coxSML and malZ , N cycling genes of ureC , nirB , nasAB and nxrAB , P cycling genes of pstABC and ugpQ , genes dehH and dhaA encoding dehalogenase were enhanced, phoR and phnP were reduced by PFOA contamination. Biochar remediation restored the bacterial community structure and function to the control level, however, the interaction between bacterial genera was significantly decreased compared with uncontaminated level, illustrated as the reduced number of edges (from 538 to 245), network average degree (from 22 to 10), network density (from 0.477 to 0.217), the clustering coefficients (from 0.727 to 0.534) and the increased average path length (from 1.752 to 2.322). Our study found for the first time the decreased microbial interaction induced by biochar remediation of PFOA contaminated soil and provided a deeper insight into the response of microbial interaction to biochar amendment of recalcitrant compounds-PFAS contaminated soil.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a persistent environmental contaminant with serious negative health effects, and removal of it from water is therefore highly relevant for environmental safety. In this paper, poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimers have been proposed as hosts for the PFOA in order to remove it from aqueous solutions. The different aggregate structures for PAMAM-PFOA complexes with increase of −COO − /−NH 3 + molar ratios were proposed on the basis NMR titrations using 19 F NMR and further analyzed by the relaxation and diffusion measurements. It is suggested that PFOA micelles are transferred to the bilayer with increasing PAMAM concentration. Moreover, the protonated surface amine groups of PAMAM contribute to reduce the critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of PFOA. The study shows that the main driving force for interaction between PAMAM and PFOA is ionic interaction. This research will serve as a starting-point for removing the fluorinated contamination by using PAMAM dendrimers.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized perfluorinated chemical widely used in industries. It is often released into the environment without treatment, which causes pollution in groundwater. Recently, we have reported a rapid and efficient removal of PFOA in aqueous solution by using a fountain-strip dielectric barrier discharge reactor (SF-DBD). This design allows for the gaseous–liquid interaction to happen in a large space at atmospheric pressure, so it is a promising method to efficiently remove PFOA from water. Recently, we reported the effects of the process parameters, including power mode, pulse time, sinusoidal wave discharge, the discharge gas, initial concentration, pH, conductivity, and positive and negative discharges, on the efficiency of this method for PFOA degradation. Understanding the reaction mechanism is key to further improve the efficiency of the system. In this work, we reported the decomposition mechanism of the SF-DBD for PFOA degradation. The mass spectrum (MS) showed that PFOA was degraded to perfluoroheptanoic acid, perfluorohexanoic acid, perfluoropentanoic acid, perfluorobutanoic acid, perfluoropropionic acid, and trifluoroacetic acid after the plasma treatment. The optical emission spectroscope (OES) and the radical scavenger experiments indicated that the excited argon atoms and hydroxyl radicals played a major role in PFOA degradation, while the contributions from the solvated electrons (e−aq), superoxide anion radical (·O2−), and singlet oxygen (1O2) were negligible in initiating the cleavage reaction. Keywords:mechanism;DBD;plasma;degrade;PFOA;reactive species

The environmental impact of biodegradable microplastics (BMPs) is profoundly influenced by aging-induced surface transformations, yet their interactions with persistent organic pollutants, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), remain poorly understood. This work investigates how aging polylactic acid (PLA), a common BMP, in simulated surface water for 80 days alters its physicochemical properties and behavior towards PFOA. Aging triggered oxidative and hydrolytic degradation, leading to pronounced morphological changes, including increased surface roughness, hydrophilicity, and oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio from 0.82 to 1.28. These transformations introduced hydroxyl and carboxyl functional groups, shifting the PFOA adsorption mechanism from physisorption (in fresh PLA) to chemisorption (in aged PLA) via stronger electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonding. Additionally, kinetic and isotherm analyses revealed a tenfold increase in PFOA monolayer adsorption capacity for aged PLA (PLA-80) compared to pristine PLA. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations corroborated these findings, demonstrating a reduced HOMO–LUMO energy gap upon PFOA adsorption, indicative of enhanced electronic reactivity and charge transfer. Topological analysis further identified multiple hydrogen-bonding sites, confirming the dominance of electrostatic forces in pollutant retention. These results underscore the critical role of aging in amplifying BMPs’ environmental reactivity, emphasizing the urgent need to incorporate aging processes into risk assessments for biodegradable plastics.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an artificially synthesized per-fluorinated chemical widely used in industry. It is often released into the environment without treatment and causes pollution in groundwater. In this paper, we employed a strip fountain dielectric barrier discharge (SF-DBD) plasma source to degrade PFOA from the water. The effects of power supply mode, discharge gases, pH, the conductivity of the solution, concentration, etc., on the degradation efficiency were studied. For a 200 mL sample of 75 mg/L PFOA, a 99% degradation efficiency with a 204.5 μg/kJ energy production rate was achieved using an average power of 43 W negative pulse argon plasma for 50 min at atmospheric pressure. The total organic carbon concentration (TOC) decreased by 63% after a 60 min treatment. The SF-DBD proves to be a promising and energy-saving technique to efficiently remove PFOA from water. Keywords:plasma;PFOA;degradation;dielectric barrier discharge

ZnO-reduced graphene oxide (ZnO-rGO) was synthesized successfully at 423 K by a hydrothermal method. The presence of reduced graphene oxide significantly improved the photocatalytic performance of ZnO and its optimal loading ratio was 0.6 wt%. The XRD, SEM, UV–vis and FT-IR were applied to characterize the prepared catalyst. Comparative experiments were conducted to evaluate perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) degradation efficiency and the results showed that 99.2% PFOA was degraded in persulfate-assisted photocatalytic ozonation with low dosage of ozone and persulfate at room temperature. The impact factors on PFOA degradation efficiency including loading ratios of GO on ZnO, reaction temperatures and persulfate concentration were inspected and analyzed. The sodium persulfate and ammonium persulfate were compared as common oxidants in photocatalytic ozonation for PFOA degradation and sodium persulfate showed the better PFOA removal. Chloride and humic acid (HA) were common substances in natural water, and they showed inhibition effects on PFOA degradation. Conversion of persulfate to sulfate ion was studied and persulfate concentration during PFOA oxidation was monitored. PFHpA, PFHeA, PFPeA and PFBA were main intermediates during PFOA degradation.

Both perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) are emerging contaminants commonly found in aqueous environments. In co-contaminated areas, MPs may act as carriers for PFOA, complicating transport dynamics. However, information on their cotransport in porous media is limited. This study investigates the transport behaviors of PFOA and PS-MPs in saturated quartz sand columns under varying ionic strength (IS), cation type, and pH. Using the DLVO interaction energy theory and a mathematical model, we analyzed their cotransport. The results demonstrated that PS-MPs inhibited PFOA transport due to hydrophobic adsorption, reducing PFOA mobility. However, at pH 5, PS-MPs facilitated PFOA transport through competitive adsorption on sand surfaces. Conversely, PFOA significantly accelerated PS-MPs transport, likely due to electrostatic repulsion and reduced PS-MPs size. The promoting effect of PFOA on PS-MPs was similar in NaCl and CaCl 2 solutions. It is noteworthy that under acidic conditions, the increased electrostatic attraction between PS-MPs and quartz sand leads to substantial adsorption of PS-MPs onto the quartz sand surface. Under these conditions, PFOA exerts almost no promoting effect on PS-MPs. This study showed that the coexistence of PS-MPs and PFOA would influence the mobility of each other in the saturated porous media. Overall, the findings from this work could greatly improve our understanding of cotransport behaviors and environmental risk of PS-MPs and PFOA.

Due to the high toxicity, persistence and resistance of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), developing convenient and efficient methods to degrade such highly recalcitrant contaminants is urgently needed. Herein, a visible light-responsive semiconductor carbon nitride (CN) was introduced to realize enhanced degradation of PFOA by providing the strong oxidizing radical •OH. In this study, 365 nm UV light and 456–760 nm visible light were applied as two comparable light sources, highlighting the fact that under simple visible light irradiation, both the degradation rate and defluorination rate of PFOA ultimately reached over 95 % with the aid of the Fe 3+ /CN system in at most 70 h. In addition, possible influencing factors, including the dosage of ferric ions (varying from 0–0.01 mol/L), the contaminant itself (ranging from 20 μg/L to 5 mg/L) and semiconductor CN (5–20 mg/L), were also investigated, and an accelerated reaction mechanism was proposed. Our results shed light on the most recent development of effective and sustainable technologies for PFOA breakdown in the environment.
