In this paper, a series of amphiphilic diblock polymers of poly(hydroxyethylacrylamide)-b-poly(1H,1H-pentafluoropropyl methacrylate) (PHEAA-b-PFMA) were grafted from silicon wafer via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). Surface wettability and chemical compositions of the modified surfaces were characterized by contact angle goniometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) respectively. Molecular weight and polydispersity of each block were measured using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The topography and the microphase separation behavior of PHEAA-b-PFMA surfaces were investigated by atomic force microscope (AFM). The results show that only when the grafting density (σ) and thickness of PHEAA brush were in the range of 0.9–1.3 (chain/nm2) and 6.6–15.1 nm, respectively, and the ratio of PFMA/PHEAA varied from 89/42 to 89/94, could the diblock copolymer phase separate into nanostructures. Further, the antiprotein adsorption performance of the modified surfaces against BSA, fibrinogen, and lysozyme was studied. The results indicated the modified surfaces could reduce the protein adsorption compared to the pristine silicon wafer. For Fibrinogen, the antiadsorption effect of PHEAA-b-PFMA-modified surfaces with microphase segregation was better than that of corresponding PHEAA modified surfaces. The results provide further evidence that surface composition and microphase segregation of fluorinated moieties of block copolymer brushes significantly impact protein adsorption behaviors.

Highly conductive and mechanical hydrogels with antibacterial and antifouling properties are very important for flexible sensors. In this study, a conductive and mechanically reinforced poly(N-(2-hydroxyethyl)acrylamide) (PHEAA) hybrid double-network hydrogel (denoted as PHCKM) was developed through the aqueous copolymerization of HEAA with polymerizable modified MXene and a hydrophobic mixture of stearyl methacrylate, sodium dodecyl sulfate, and sodium chloride (C18-SDS/NaCl) in the micellar form, in the presence of poly(vinyl alcohol). The optimized PHCKM hydrogel exhibited outstanding comprehensive performances, including high tensile strength (720 kPa), large fracture elongation (1000%), excellent moisture retention (>95% after 7 days at 25 °C and 60% RH), good conductivity (0.78 S/m), high antibacterial efficacy (>99%), effective antifouling ability, and strain responsiveness. The hydrogel-based strain sensor can be used for human electrocardiographic and joint motion monitoring. As a proof of concept, a wearable multichannel sensor was explored for real-time hand motion tracking. Benefiting from a machine learning-assisted multiscale signal decoupling model, high-accuracy recognition of 10 different gestures with over 99% accuracy was achieved. Moreover, the hydrogel-based triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) showed an open-circuit voltage of 140 V, a short-circuit current of 3.5 μA, and a short-circuit transferred charge of 51 nC. Such a TENG can not only effectively harvest mechanical energy, enabling it to power microelectronic devices for up to 22 s, but also realize self-powered human motion sensing, and a conceptual application of real-time handwriting recognition is demonstrated. The promising potential of such a hydrogel sensor for multifunctional human–machine interfaces with intelligent sensing capabilities is foreseen.

Linear poly(N-hydroxyethylacrylamide) (PHEAA) is regarded as one of the most promising antifouling materials because of its excellent antifouling properties and good hemocompatibility. However, the antifouling performance of topological PHEAAs remains largely unknown. Herein, the preparation of antifouling surfaces based on a tadpole-shaped PHEAA coating is reported for the first time, and how the tadpole-shaped PHEAA architecture affects antifouling performance is investigated. It is shown that the tadpole-shaped PHEAA-modified surfaces exhibit better antifouling performance than linear copolymer precursor-modified surfaces with identical molar masses and chemical compositions. This may be primarily attributed to the presence of cyclic PHEAA head chain segments in the tadpole-shaped PHEAA copolymer, and the absence of interchain entanglements can facilitate the formation of smoother and densely packed grafts, which result in better antifouling properties.

In this paper, the hydrophilic p( N -hydroxyethylacrylamide) (PHEAA) brush was grafted from silicon wafer, followed by the decoration of C 3 F 7 groups with low surface energy to the side chains of PHEAA brush. The anti-adhesion performance of the modified surfaces was evaluated using Actinomyces naeslundii and Streptococcus mutans . For 4 h incubation, the silicon wafer with PHEAA brush (Si-PHEAA) was able to resist the adhesion of bacteria, while the anti-adhesion of the PHEAA-C 3 F 7 decorated silicon wafer (Si-PHEAA-C 3 F 7 ) had been improved. When the incubation time was extended to 24 h, the Si-PHEAA-C 3 F 7 still exhibited excellent adhesion-repellent property against bacteria. And among the Si-PHEAA-C 3 F 7 surfaces with 2.6%, 9% and 13% grafting degrees of C 3 F 7 , there was no obvious difference in anti-adhesion performance. The results indicated that the method of polymerization prior to decoration is easy to operate, moreover the prepared Si-PHEAA-C 3 F 7 possessed the long-term and high-efficiency anti-adhesion of bacteria ability.

Postoperative intrauterine adhesion (IUA), caused by endometrial basal layer injury, is one of the main causes of female infertility. The excessive deposition of fibrin as well as fibroblast is considered the root cause of IUA. However, few clinical strategies are effective in preventing extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition at endometrial wounds that include protein and cell deposits. Herein, the injectable granular poly(N-(2-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide) (PHEAA) hydrogel (granular PHEAA gel), which presents excellent antifouling properties and remarkably prevents protein and cell adhesions, is used to prevent postoperative IUA. The granular PHEAA gel with a jammed network structure exhibits outstanding injectability and superior stability. Compared with the IUA group, the granular PHEAA gel can promote regeneration of the endometrium while reducing the area of endometrial fibrosis. Immunohistochemical staining experiments indicate that the granular PHEAA gel can improve the proliferation of the endometrium, promote vascularization, and enhance anti-inflammatory effect in IUA rats. And the granular PHEAA gel can effectively slow down the fibrosis of uterine tissue. Importantly, the number of embryos is significantly increased after injecting granular PHEAA gel, inferring that there is an obvious reproductive function recovery of injured endometrium.
