In this paper, two series of poly(sulfobetaine methacrylate)-b-poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PSBMA-b-PLMA) diblock copolymers were prepared to investigate the core–shell reversion of amphiphilic copolymers. Experimental results proved that the PSBMA-b-PLMA copolymers can be self-assembled as core–shell nanoparticles in chloroform. Moreover, 1H NMR spectra and contact angle measurements revealed that there is a transitional PSBMA/PLMA block ratio of 0.6, above which the nanoparticles are capable of switching their core and shell in aqueous solution. Consequently, nanoparticles with PSBMA/PLMA block ratios above 0.6 showed superior antifouling and antibacterial abilities to those with block ratios below 0.4. Moreover, it was also found that the block chain length plays an important role in core–shell reversion as evidenced by 1H NMR spectra, water contact angle, and antifouling tests. As a result, coatings fabricated with the PLMA100 series of nanoparticles showed better antifouling abilities than those of the PLMA150 series at the same block ratio probably because of the thinner shell of PLMA100 copolymers. PSBMA100-b-PLMA100 was proved to be the best candidate for the fabrication of antifouling coatings as it exhibited the highest efficacy in antibacterial adhesion and antiprotein adsorption. This study provided a facile method to fabricate antifouling coatings by developing amphiphilic diblock copolymers with tuned hydrophobic/hydrophilic block ratio, block chain length, etc.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) remains the predominant complication following cataract surgery, significantly impairing visual function restoration. In this study, we developed a PCO model that closely mimics the anatomical structure of the crystalline lens capsule post-surgery. The model incorporated a threaded structure for accurate positioning and observation, allowing for opening and closing. Utilizing 3D printing technology, a stable external support system was created using resin material consisting of a rigid, hollow base and cover. To replicate the lens capsule structure, a thin hydrogel coating was applied to the resin scaffold. The biocompatibility and impact on cellular functionality of various hydrogel compositions were assessed through an array of staining techniques, including calcein-AM/PI staining, rhodamine staining, BODIPY-C11 staining, and EdU staining in conjunction with transwell assays. Additionally, the PCO model was utilized to investigate the effects of eight drugs with anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative properties, including 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide (AICAR), THZ1, sorbinil, 4-octyl itaconate (4-OI), xathohumol, zebularine, rapamycin, and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), on human lens epithelial cells (HLECs). Confocal microscopy facilitated comprehensive imaging of the PCO model. The results demonstrated that the GelMA 60 5% + PLMA 2% composite hydrogel exhibited superior biocompatibility and minimal lipid peroxidation levels among the tested hydrogels. Moreover, compared to using hydrogel as the material for 3D printing the entire model, applying surface hydrogel spin coating with parameters of 2000 rpm x 2 on the resin-based 3D printed base yielded a more uniform cell distribution and reduced apoptosis. Furthermore, rapamycin, 4-OI, and AICAR demonstrated potent antiproliferative effects in the drug intervention study. Confocal microscopy imaging revealed a uniform distribution of HLECs along the anatomical structure of the crystalline lens capsule within the PCO model, showcasing robust cell viability and regular morphology. In conclusion, the PCO model provides a valuable experimental platform for studying PCO pathogenesis and exploring potential therapeutic interventions.

Articular cartilage regeneration requires a bioink that combines printability with mechanical support, antibacterial functionality, and pro-chondrogenic bioactivity. Here, a 3D-printable hyaluronic acid methacrylate/polylysine methacrylamide (HAMA/PLMA, HP) hybrid hydrogel incorporating kartogenin-loaded liposomes (KGN@Lipo) was developed for articular cartilage regeneration. Integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic profiling identified HP-associated signatures related to ECM interaction and mechanotransduction, and selected mechanosensitive genes were subsequently validated by qRT-PCR. A second multi-omics comparison showed that KGN@Lipo@HP was associated with attenuated inflammatory–catabolic signaling and a matrix-protective cellular state relative to the Control condition. Physicochemical characterization confirmed rapid photocuring, reliable print fidelity, improved compressive behavior, cyclic resilience, and a tunable porous architecture, while liposomal loading preserved the optimized mechanical baseline. Functionally, KGN@Lipo@HP maintained high cytocompatibility, showed lower intracellular ROS-associated fluorescence, markedly inhibited Staphylococcus aureus growth, and promoted in vitro chondrogenesis, as evidenced by intensified cartilage-matrix staining and increased COL2 and ACAN expression. In the rabbit defect model, KGN@Lipo@HP was associated with the most extensive cartilage-like matrix deposition and the lowest histological scores among the tested groups. Compared with Control, the treated defects also exhibited distinct immunohistochemical profiles for cartilage formation and tissue remodeling. Together, these findings support an HP-based bioink platform that integrates mechanical support, antibacterial protection, and liposomal KGN bioactivity to support a cartilage-permissive regenerative microenvironment.

To achieve prolonged and sustainable release of copper ion in Cu 2 O-containing marine coatings, poly(lauryl methacrylate)-b-poly(2-( N , N -dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PLMA-b-PDMAEMA) diblock copolymers with different block ratios and molecular weights were synthesized by atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. It was proved that the copolymers are able to coordinate with copper ion. And the surface wettability tests showed that the amphiphilic copolymers may undergo structure change in seawater. Taking advantage of the structure transformation and copper coordination abilities, the copolymer was employed to encapsulate Cu 2 O for the preparation of antifouling coatings. A controllable and continuous release of copper ion from Cu 2 O/copolymer coatings was then obtained. More importantly, it showed that higher PLMA/PDMAEMA block ratio exhibited better bactericidal rate. Actually, the bactericidal ability of the coating depends on the time duration of copper ion on the surface instead of the hydrolysis speed of the coating, in other words, the hydrophobic interaction of PLMA with the resin may play a major role in the antifouling performance of the marine coating. Self-polishing coatings Cu 2 O/copolymer/polycaprolactone (PCL) were then prepared and applied for marine field test, the antifouling performances were proved to be comparable to that of the commercially available self-polishing coatings.

Pd nanoparticles (NPs) supported by micelles formed with poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate)- b -poly(lauryl methacrylate) (Pd/PDMAEMA- b -PLMA) were prepared and employed as catalyst in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of aryl bromides with arylboronic acids in water. Most reactions proceeded with high efficiency at room temperature with only 0.05 mol% Pd loading in the absence of ligands, which afforded the desired functionalized biaryls in 73–98 % yields after 24 h. After reaction, Pd/PDMAEMA- b -PLMA retained in the aqueous phase was easily separated from the insoluble biaryl product and could be further reused two times without significant loss in catalytic efficiency. Characterization of the catalyst disclosed that sub-2 nm Pd NPs were embedded in the hydrophilic corona of polymeric micelles that served as nanoreactors in water.

Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs)-containing Pickering emulsions exhibit promising application potentials because of the integration of the “green” quality and the tunable applications of RTILs with the advantages of Pickering emulsions, such as the high stability and adjustable droplet size. In the present study, sterically-stabilized polymer nanoparticles (SSPNs) were first prepared via the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated non-aqueous dispersion polymerization , in which poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) and poly(4-vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) acted as the stabilizer block and the core-forming block, respectively. Kinetically-trapped PLMA- b -P4VP spheres and mixed spherical/worm-like morphologies could be achieved at a target copolymer composition . Subsequently, core cross-linked SSPNs (CSSPNs) were obtained by means of chemical cross-linking of P4VP cores of SSPNs with 1,4-dibromobutane in a diluted solution of SSPNs in toluene (0.4 mg/mL). Stable 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate-in-toluene ([Bmim][BF 4 ]-in-toluene) non-aqueous Pickering emulsions could be formed at a low emulsifier content of 0.005 wt% adopting CSSPNs with mixed spherical/worm-like morphologies as Pickering emulsifiers. Benefiting from large surface areas of Pickering emulsions and unique chemical/physical properties of RTILs, [Bmim][BF 4 ]-in-toluene Pickering emulsions provided readily available platforms for many organic reactions . As a proof of the concept, proline catalyzed Knoevenagel reaction of 4-nitrobenzaldehyde with malononitrile was chosen as a model here. Both high reaction efficiency and good recyclability were observed.
