The recent pandemic of COVID-19 makes personal protective facial masks in high demand. Melt-blown or electrospun nanofibers are considered to be ideal air filter materials for resisting virus-containing fine aerosol particle, eliminating particulate matter (PM) air pollution, and protecting public health. For the commercial micro/nanofiber membranes, the general strategy for improving filtration efficiency is to simply increase the base weight. However, the influence of the base weight on overall filtration performance of air filters is usually ignored, which always leads to large pressure drop and poor breathing comfort. Here, a fabrication process using the electrospinning method with phase separation of charged droplets is reported for the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) nanofiber/net membranes based air filters. The average pore areas of TPU nanofiber/nets can be tunable from 0.6504 μm2 to 0.0083 μm2 via the incorporation of different Li+ ion concentrations. The optimized TPU nanofiber/net membranes based air filter demonstrates the attributes of high PM0.1 removal efficiency up to 97.08%, ∼58 Pa pressure drop, 0.061 Pa–1 quality factor, and good optical transparency with the only 6 g·m–2 base weight, which is ground-breaking compared with the existing micro/nanofiber membrane based air filters for ultrafine particle filtration.

Particulate matter (PM) contamination constituted a significant threat to both human well-being and the worldwide ecological system. However, protective masks achieved high-performance filtration of the PM by tightly stacking fibers, especially for PM 0.1 , which seriously affected the wearing comfort. Herein, a Nylon-6/SiO 2 composite fiber membrane with two-dimension (2D) narrow pore but 3D fluffy structure was designed to harmoniously combine high-performance filtration capabilities with comfort. Based on one-step multi-jet free-surface air-jet spinning and spraying, the introduction of nano-SiO 2 spheres enhanced the surface roughness of the fiber and reduced the pore size of the 2D fiber layer in the membrane structure, improving PM 0.1 particle capture. Additionally, the addition of micro-SiO 2 spheres could construct a fluffy 3D reticular architecture in the membrane, enhancing the flow of air and minimizing gas resistance during the filtration process. Due to the structural design featuring small pores and low packing density, the Nylon-6/SiO 2 -NM membrane exhibited an excellent PM removal rate of 99.99 % and low air resistance of 101 Pa at the flow rate of 32 L/min. At the flow rate of 85 L/min, the filtration efficiency of 99.9 % could be achieved, and the gas resistance was 254 Pa, the performance conformed to the GB 19083-2011. Moreover, the Nylon-6/SiO 2 -NM mask simultaneously possessed superior wearing comfort with air permeability (277.09 mm/s) and moisture permeability (196.50 g·m −2 ·h −1 ) and UV protection (UPF value of 136), as well as good thermal comfort. This research had the potential to introduce a fresh perspective on developing advanced, high-performance, and user-friendly personal protective materials.

Air pollution, especially from ultrafine particles (PM0.1, ≤0.1 μm), is increasingly recognized for its detrimental effects on health. The influence of PM0.1 on neurodevelopmental disorders and its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood but are of significant concern. Through an investigation using mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs), our study has uncovered disruptions in cell cycle dynamics, reduced neural precursor formation, and impaired neurogenesis during mESC neural differentiation as a result of PM0.1-induced neurodevelopmental toxicity. By employing N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylated RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing and bioinformatics, we identified Zic1 as a key target of PM0.1-induced developmental disturbances. Our mechanistic findings indicate that PM0.1 enhances m6A methylation of Zic1 by upregulating Mettl3, leading to decreased mRNA stability and expression of this gene. Furthermore, the efficacy of the METTL3 inhibitor in alleviating nerve differentiation impairments emphasizes the significance of this pathway. In addition, source analysis, molecular docking, and toxicity analyses show that PAHs with higher ring structures in PM0.1 from combustion sources competitively bind to METTL3, potentially exacerbating neurodevelopmental toxicity. This study not only underscores the severe impact of PM0.1 on neurodevelopment but also reveals the pivotal role of m6A modification in mediating these effects, providing valuable insights and potential therapeutic targets for mitigating PM0.1-related health risks.
