The necklace-like fiber membranes are fabricated using electrospinning technique for high-efficiency PM (particulate matter) capture. Poly- N , N ′-[(4,5-dihydroxy-1,2 phenylene)bis(methylene)]bisacrylamide (POHABA) nanospheres as “pearls” are embedded in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) matrix substrates to make necklace-like fibers. The reason for choosing POHABA nanospheres is due to their broad-spectrum inhibitory effect on bacteria. The diameters of three POHABA nanospheres are controlled to be 190 ± 50, 364 ± 39 and 467 ± 65 nm, respectively. The necklace-like structures become more pronounced with the increase of POHABA diameter. The PM 2.5 removal efficiencies of PEO necklace-like fiber membranes obtained with electrospinning time of half an hour are in the range from 88.0 to 92.5%. Under the same fabrication conditions, the PEO/POHABA-467 fiber membrane displays better capture efficiency than that of PVP/POHABA-467 fiber membrane. Using thicker PEO/POHABA-467 filter membrane (electrospinning for one hour), excellent removal efficiency of PM 2.5 (99.2%) is achieved, which is better than that obtained from other membranes and even commercial QMA filter (Whatman). The necklace-like fiber membranes have a great potential in the fields of aero filter and mask.

The functionalization of nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) is a prevailing and promising strategy to prepare highly efficient air filters for high-precision filtration. Graphene oxide (GO), due to its functional chemical groups, high mechanical properties , electrical conductivity , and excellent compatibility, has been widely applied in modification of polymer materials. In this work, two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets are introduced into PVDF NFMs through the use of the GO/PVDF blending-electrospinning and GO@PVDF surface coating methods to prepare a highly efficient air filter, respectively. Different GO loadings lead to NFMs with diverse surface properties, static electricity, nanofiber diameters, and air filtration performances. The basic properties, filtration performance and effects of the GO loading strategies of the optimized GO/PVDF and GO@PVDF NFMs are systematically compared and analyzed. In general, blending GO in a PVDF solution before electrospinning may significantly enhance the spinnability and static electricity. Meanwhile, GO with lamellar structure is of great benefit to provide the nucleation basis for β-PVDF, which can significantly endow the membrane with good particle capture capacity. The obtained GO/PVDF NFMs show a higher PM 2.5 removal efficiency of 99.31% and better reusability than the pristine PVDF NFMs (93.74%) and GO@PVDF NFMs (95.41%). This work reveals that blending GO in an electrospinning solution is a practical modification technique to prepare a high-efficiency air cleaning membrane.

Nanofiber filter media can potentially reduce exposure to PM 2.5 in indoor environments because of the filters’ high particle-removal efficiency. To facilitate such filter use, this study conducted a series of experiments to understand the evolution of wetting liquid aerosols, taking incense particles as an example, on nanofiber filter media and the influence of this evolution on PM 2.5 removal efficiency and pressure drop. Scanning electron microscope images were also taken to observe the nanoscale interactions between incense particles and the nanofiber network. The results show that the PM 2.5 removal efficiency at first decreased as the loading mass increased, because interactions between the particles and the nanofiber network enlarged the pores. The evolution of pressure drop may consist of two stages, i.e., a first stage with a linear relationship, and a second stage with a steep increase in pressure drop with the loading mass. When the pore size became small enough, in addition to inertial impaction and Brownian diffusion , the capture mechanism of interception also became significant. Consequently, the second stage, with a steep increase, tended to occur. Finally, methods for establishing empirical equations for PM 2.5 removal efficiency and pressure drop as a function of loading mass were proposed.

Electrospinning is a versatile technique to fabricate nanofiber filters with high PM 2.5 removal efficiency and relatively low pressure drop. The eletrospun nanofiber filters may therefore be applied in buildings to reduce indoor exposure to PM 2.5 and the associated adverse health effects . This study investigated the influence of various filter parameters, including fiber diameter , filter thickness, and packing density, on the PM 2.5 removal efficiency. In this work, 25 nylon electrospun nanofiber filters with different filter parameters were prepared, and the PM 2.5 removal efficiency of each sample was measured at five different face velocities. In total, 125 sets of measured data were obtained. The results show that the PM 2.5 removal efficiency of nylon electrospun nanofiber filters was negatively associated with the fiber diameter, and positively associated with the thickness of the filter. However, there was no clear correlation between PM 2.5 removal efficiency and packing density. This investigation further developed a semi-empirical model for predicting the PM 2.5 removal efficiency of nylon nanofiber filters. The accuracy of the model was satisfactory with a median relative error of 7.9%.

Air particulate pollution from ever-increasing industrialization poses an enormous threat to public health. Thus, the development of a green air filter with high efficiency and performance is of urgent necessity. In this study, we introduce a new effective air filtration membrane that can be used for outdoor protection. The air filter’s composite nanofibre materials were prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-sodium lignosulfonate (LS) via a “green” electrospinning method and thermal crosslinking. The addition of LS helped increase the PM 2.5 removal efficiency compared to that of a pure PVA nanofibre membrane. The pressure drops of the electrospun PVA-LS membranes exceeded those of the pristine PVA air filter. The remarkable air filtration performance was maintained even after 10 cycles of circulation filtration. In addition, the PVA-LS composite nanofibre membrane exhibited excellent mechanical properties and transparency due to the introduction of LS. This study provides new insight into the design and development of high-performance and high-visibility green filter media, which include personal protection and building screens.
