Bai Jiang,Jianxun Shang,Faying Zhang,Na Li,Yan Wang,Zuming Hu,Junrong Yu

Developing high-efficiency electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding composite membranes along with additional functionalities to extend the application scenarios is highly desirable for the next generation electronic devices. Here, we report an ultrathin and flexible EMI shielding materials with sensitive Joule heating and outstanding infrared stealth performance was fabricated from poly-m-phenylene isophthalamide (PMIA) and Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) through an innovation and simplicity method of electrospinning and electroless plating. Profiting from a continuous three-dimensional (3D) conductive network, the final membrane achieves an outstanding EMI shielding effectiveness (SE) of 100.51 dB (in X-band), a remarkable Joule heating properties with a fast thermal response and low driving voltage (<0.5 V), and an outstanding infrared stealth with a low infrared emissivity (0.28). Meanwhile, the prepared composite membrane demonstrates stable EMI SE even after water washing, continuous bending, and heating treatment. This work integrates high-performance fiber PMIA, characterized by high heat resistance, flame retardancy, self-extinguishing properties, and chemical resistance, with functions such as EMI shielding, infrared stealth, and autonomous thermal management. It has great development potential if utilized in specialized combat uniforms under harsh conditions.

Ultralight and flexible electrospun PMIA/AgNW/Ni composite membrane with thermostability and excellent electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness

Bai Jiang,Na Li,Yan Wang,Zuming Hu,Jing Zhu,Junrong Yu

In order to deal with the more complex electromagnetic radiation environment, there is highly desirable to manufacture a high-performance electromagnetic shielding material with excellent electromagnetic shielding efficiency, flexibility, thermal properties, fatigue resistance , and other qualities. In this paper, we fabricated an ultralight, flexible, and heat-resistant poly-m-phenylene isophthalamide (PMIA)/Ag nanowires(AgNWs)/Ni composite nanofiber film via electrospinning, spray coating, and electroless plating . Compared with different AgNWs spraying contents, the highest electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, about 96 dB with a thickness of ∼150 µm, is generated by spraying 33.333 mg/cm 2 AgNWs suspension. Additionally, because of the benefit of the PMIA, this PMIA/AgNW/Ni composite membrane maintains a constant EMI SE value (over 90 dB) after a high-temperature process under 200 °C, which only decreases by 3.33 %. The excellent performance of the material is due to its large porosity and sandwich structure, which can dissipate electromagnetic waves within the material, with only a very small portion of the electromagnetic waves passing through it. Therefore, this material has a potential application for use in diverse harsh settings.

Novel Sandwich-Structured Flexible ANF/PMIA/ANF Composite Paper with Enhanced Breakdown Strength

Duan Guangyu,Hu Fengying,Liang Yinghao,Lu Duo,Shao Wenxuan,Xu Ruopu,Wang Yabing,Hu Zuming

With the rapid development of cutting-edge electrical equipment and electrical systems, it is of great significance to develop advanced polymeric insulating paper with high breakdown strength under a high-temperature environment. In this paper, aramid nanofibers (ANF) and original poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) paper were utilized to construct ANF/PMIA/ANF composite papers with sandwich structure. On account of the reduced surface roughness of the original PMIA paper, the high breakdown strength of ANF layers and formed high-density electron traps, the breakdown strength of ANF/PMIA/ANF composite paper is significantly enhanced. The Weibull breakdown strength ANF/PMIA/ANF composite paper with 4 mg/mL of ANF are 82.7 MV/m at 25 °C and 61.7 MV/m at 100 °C, which are 165.1 and 137.4% of the A-P-A-0 at 25 and 100 °C, respectively. Additionally, the flame-retardant property of ANF/PMIA/ANF composite paper is also obviously improved with increasing concentration of ANF. Consequently, this work offers an opportunity for the development of novel polymeric insulating paper with enhanced breakdown strength in a wide temperature range.

High-temperature PMIA dielectric composites with enhanced thermal conductivity utilizing functionalized BaTiO3 nanowires–carbon nanotubes fillers

Guangyu Duan,Fengying Hu,Zhongyuan Xin,Changlong Chi,Xiang Yu

This study reports that a novel high-temperature poly (m-phenyleneisophthalamide) (PMIA) composite with enhanced dielectric constant and thermal conductivity was prepared by filling with BaTiO3 nanowires–carbon nanotubes (BTCNs) fillers. Due to effective functionalization of BaTiO3 nanowires (BTNWs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), the fabricated BTCNs fillers were homogeneously dispersed in PMIA matrix. The consequence displays that the dielectric constant of PMIA composite with 15 wt % BTNWs fillers increases to 27.6 at 103 Hz, which is about nine times higher than that of pure PMIA. Moreover, owing to the high thermal conductivity of MWCNTs, the thermal conductivity of PMIA with 15 wt% BTNWs fillers increases to 1.01 W/(mK). The enhanced thermal conductivity is beneficial for BTCNs/PMIA composite to dissipate the generated heat by dielectric loss. Considering these merits, this research would provide new methods and ideas for preparation of high-temperature dielectric polymer composites and reducing the internal thermal effect.

Optimization of Preparation Conditions of Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) PMIA Hollow Fiber Nanofiltration Membranes for Dye/Salt Wastewater Treatment

Qinliang Jiang,Kaisong Zhang

Externally selective thin film composite (TFC) hollow fiber (HF) nanofiltration membranes (NFMs) hold great industrial application prospects because of their high surface area module. However, the complicated preparation process of the membrane has hindered its mass manufacture and application. In this work, PMIA TFC HF NFMs were successfully prepared by the interfacial polymerization (IP) of piperazine (PIP) with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC). The effect of the membrane preparation conditions on their separation performance was systematically investigated. The characterized results showed the successful formation of a polyamide (PA) separation layer on PMIA HF substrates by the IP process. The as-prepared HF NFMs’ performance under optimized conditions achieved the highest pure water permeability (18.20 L·m−2·h−1, 0.35 MPa) and superior salt rejection in the order: RNa2SO4(98.30%) > RMgSO4(94.60%) > RMgCl2(61.48%) > RNaCl(19.24%). In addition, the as-prepared PMIA HF TFC NFMs exhibited desirable pressure resistance at various operating bars and Na2SO4feed concentrations. Excellent separation performance of chromotrope 2B dye was also achieved. The as-prepared PMIA HF NFMs thus show great promise for printing and dyeing wastewater treatment. Keywords:hollow fiber;nanofiltration;PMIA;preparation conditions;dye/salt wastewater

Enhanced Dielectric Strength and Mechanical Properties in PMIA Micro-nano Paper by Interface Plasma Fluorination Treatment

Kaixuan Sun,Haoxuan Sun,Xianghan Du,Zixuan Zhao,Geng Chen,Fangcheng Lv,Xiang Yu

Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) is renowned for its superior insulating and mechanical properties, holding immense promise in ultra-high voltage transmission systems. To further enhance the mechanical robustness of nanofiber-based paper, microfibers have been employed as reinforcement fillers. However, interfacial issues have emerged as a challenge, compromising the insulation properties. In this work, we present the realization of synergistically enhanced breakdown strength and mechanical properties in the PMIA micro-nano composite paper, achieved by interface fluorination treatment. With an optimized fluorination time of 60 s, the composite structure becomes more compact, greatly enhancing its overall integrity. The fluorine-rich interface provides potential electron traps and hydrogen bond sites, which play a crucial role in enhancing both electrical insulation and mechanical properties. The breakdown strength is increased by 19.5%, achieving a high value of 295.6 kV/mm. Concurrently, Young’s modulus and tensile strength are enhanced to 4.04 GPa and 24.38 MPa with increases of 32.9% and 14.8%, respectively. However, it is noteworthy that excessive plasma fluorination can induce surface structural damage to microfibers, impeding the adhesion of nanofibers. It leads to a deterioration in both electrical and mechanical properties. Moreover, the optimized paper shows exceptional flexibility, foldability, and colorability, opening new avenues for their utilization in demanding electrical environments.

A novel organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membrane fabricated by Poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) under large-scale and continuous process

Longming Jin,Lijie Hu,Songmiao Liang,Zhiliang Wang,Guoyang Xu,Xingsheng Yang

The organic solvent nanofiltration (OSN) membranes are an attractive candidate that enable carbon-neutral nature in both isolation and purification process. However, the application of current commercial available OSN membranes is severely hindered by their inferior permeability and selectivity. Here, using poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA) as support, a thin film composite (TFC) membrane with remarkably high permeability and ideal selectivity is fabricated in an industrial-scale manufacturing line and the relevant spiral-would module is successfully prepared. Optimization by the solvent activated, the TFC membrane with an extraordinary solvent permeation for acetone, methanol and acetonitrile are 63, 41 and 38 L m −2  h −1 ∙bar −1 , respectively. The nanofiltration performance of A-TFC membrane supports out-performs: at similar rejection (100%) the methanol and acetonitrile permeance increased dramatically at 10 and 5 times than current commercial OSN membranes, respectively. The spiral-would module is carried out in methanol and acetonitrile RB (1017 g mol −1 ) solution, which displays a high permeate fluxes and stable separation performances, methanol: 112 GPD, 98%; acetonitrile: 99 GPD, 99.3%. This work provided a large-scale facile process for high-performance PMIA based OSN membrane, and the fabrication of spiral-would module, which should be promising for manufacture of solvent-resistant TFC membrane in industrial scale-up.

Synergistic enhancements of mechanical and insulating properties in electrospun PMIA-based composite films

Xinghan Du,Zhongyao Chai,Jiarui Zhang,Bowen Liu,Fang-cheng Lü,Xiang Yu,Sidi Fan

With the continuous pursuit of high voltage levels and integration in electrical devices, greater demands are placed on the operational performance of poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide) (PMIA)-based materials. Owing to the interfacial defects during preparation and modification, the enhancement of breakdown strength (Eb) and mechanical properties is always challenging. Herein, a novel PMIA film is prepared using electrospinning coupled with the hot-pressing method. High-speed spinning enables the directional arrangement of nanofibers, while the subsequent hot-pressing facilitates the physical crosslinking and consolidates the entire structure. Nanodiamond (ND) coated with polydopamine (PDA) is additionally incorporated as the reinforcement. As the loading ratio reaches 3 wt%, a synergistic enhancement of Eb and Young’s modulus (Y) is achieved, with the values of 5.92 GPa and 526.90 MV m−1 at room temperature, respectively, outperforming many previously reported works. Notably, even at 150 °C, the Eb and Y still remain at 4.98 GPa and 481.70 MV m−1, respectively. The introduction of ND@PDA fillers contributes to optimizing the thermal stability, mechanical properties, and effectively reducing the leakage current by inhibiting charge transport. The underlying mechanism is revealed by molecular dynamics and density function theory analysis, offering guidelines for the preparation of advanced PMIA-based composites in the future.

Preparation of PMIA dielectric nanocomposite with enhanced thermal conductivity by filling with functionalized graphene–carbon nanotube hybrid fillers

Duan Guangyu,Wang Yan,Yu Junrong,Zhu Jing,Hu Zuming

A novel poly( m -phenyleneisophthalamide) (PMIA) dielectric nanocomposite was successfully fabricated with functionally reduced graphene oxide (frGO) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) hybrid fillers. Due to effective functionalization of reduced graphene oxide as well as π–π interaction between frGO and MWCNTs, FGC (FGC) hybrid fillers were well-distributed in PMIA matrix. The relevant properties of FGC/PMIA dielectric nanocomposite were researched, and results demonstrated that the dielectric constant of PMIA nanocomposite with 3 wt% FGC hybrid fillers was increased to 12.8 (increased by 290%). Due to the existence of FGC fillers, the T Heat-resistance index of FGC/PMIA nanocomposites displayed an obvious increment. In addition, the “bridge effect” of MWCNTs on improving thermal conductivity of FGC/PMIA dielectric nanocomposite was also significant. For PMIA nanocomposite with 3 wt% FGC hybrid fillers, the thermal conductivity was remarkably increased to 7.38 W/m·K of in-plane direction and 0.81 W/m·K of through-plane direction. Consequently, these results reveal a new approach for preparing FGC/PMIA dielectric nanocomposite with high operating temperature and outstanding thermal conductivity, which can meet the urgent demand for high-temperature applications.

Preparation of PMIA loose nanofiltration membrane with electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembled for dye/salt filtration

Xiongfei Du,Yang Li,Kaixuan Sun,Hailiang Liu,Mingxing Chen,Qinglin Huang

Poly (m-phenylene isophthalamide)-based loose nanofiltration membranes were fabricated by electrospinning and subsequential electrostatic layer by-layer self-assembly methods, and the polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) generated by polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) were adopted to contribute the surface functional layer of nanofiber membranes. The incidences of spraying parameter and nano-SiO 2 content on the morphology, chemical constitution and dyes separation performance of PEMs functional layer was investigated, respectively. The results showed that the construction of the PEMs functional layer could obviously enhance the Congo red (CR) filtration efficiency by increasing the rejection from 4.9% to 99.8% and improve the surface hydrophilicity by reducing the water contact angle (WCA) from 90.1° to 51.8°. Nano-SiO 2 is introduced as a filler to regulate the assembly density of PEMs functional layers, the prepared PEMs/PMIA/SiO 2 membrane achieved a relatively stable permeation flux (22.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 ), and maintained high separation efficiency of CR/NaCl solution, revealing the excellent dye desalination performance, which exhibited a potential for the dye/salt wastewater treatment. In particular, we offered a new method to prepare loose nanofiltration (LNF) membranes by electrospinning and electrostatic self-assembly technique with accurate separation of inorganic salts and dye molecules.

Outstanding mechanical properties, high thermal stability and enhanced breakdown strength of PDA@BNNS/PMIA-coated meta-aramid paper with sandwich structure

Gu Siqi,Xie Ping,Hu Zuming,Yu Junrong,Wang Yan,Li Na

Because of excellent insulation properties and thermal stability, meta-aramid paper can be commonly applied to a vast number of fields, like power systems. But poriferous and relatively lax structure of meta-aramid paper would limit its applications in high-voltage environment. This paper proposes a sandwich structure design to combine PDA@BNNS/PMIA film and meta-aramid paper with high breakdown strength. After coating with 6 wt% PDA@BNNS/PMIA solution, this kind of paper became more compact, so there were few pores in the paper and it further enhanced the mechanical and dielectric performances of specimens. The tensile strength in the cross direction increased from 31.3 to 40.5 MPa, and the performance in the machine direction was from 75.5 to 78.9 MPa. Furthermore, the breakdown strength of compound-coated paper achieved 55 kV/mm, which is much higher than meta-aramid paper. Additionally, compound-coated paper still remained outstanding thermal stability. Overall, our fabricated PDA@BNNS/PMIA compound-coated paper has excellent comprehensive properties, which provides a broad prospect for the applications in high-temperature and high-voltage transformers.
