Exceptional piezoelectricity and high electromechanical coupling coefficients in Eu3+-doped PMN-PZ-PT textured ceramics via synergistic heterogeneity engineering

Yan Zhu,Guicheng Jiang,Shengpeng Han,Ran Lei,Piqi Song,Yingchun Liu,Shan-Tao Zhang,Danqing Liu,Bin Yang,Wenwu Cao

Lead-based relaxor ferroelectric materials are extensively utilized in various fields such as ultrasonic transducers, sensors, high-precision displacement control, and underwater acoustic detection, owing to their exceptional electrical properties. Nevertheless, the application of lead-based relaxor ferroelectric ceramics in high-end ultrasonic transducers is constrained by their suboptimal electromechanical coupling properties and inadequate overall piezoelectric performance. Here, by employing the strategy of “collaborative design of local structural heterogeneity and texturing”, excellent comprehensive electromechanical properties (d33 = 1310 pC N−1, k33 = 0.87, and TC = 170 °C) were achieved by introducing rare earth Eu3+ ions into [001]PC-textured Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–PbZrO3–PbTiO3 (PMN-PZ-PT) ceramics. Their d33 is about 5.5 times that of ordinary ceramic materials without rare earth ion doping. Furthermore, the examination of PFM and relaxor properties reveals that improving relaxor properties in ceramics increases the formation of nano-scale domains, which is directly responsible for their exceptional piezoelectric and electromechanical properties. Nano-scale domain structures are formed as a result of local structural heterogeneity caused by rare earth ion doping and the stress induced elastic field in the texture process. This research will be essential for the continued development and application of high-performance ferroelectric ceramic materials in devices.

Low-temperature sintering Sm-doped PMN–PZ–PT multilayer ceramic actuator with high strain and temperature stability

Qinghu Guo,Pengbin Wang,Xiangyu Meng,Dongxu Li,Zhonghua Yao,Huajun Sun,Hua Hao,Hanxing Liu,Shujun Zhang

Multilayer ceramic actuators find extensive utility in applications requiring precise displacement control or force output, due to their advantages of high precision control, rapid response, low driving voltage, low power consumption, and so on. For practical applications, there is a need for high-performance multilayer ceramic actuators (MLAs) that combine cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and temperature stability. In this work, 1.5 mol%Sm-doped 0.25 Pb(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 –0.36PbZrO 3 –0.39PbTiO 3 piezoelectric ceramics with PbO–CuO as sintering aid were fabricated. The addition of PbO–CuO significantly reduced the sintering temperature by 300°C, while having minimal impact on the piezoelectric properties. The optimized sintering condition, achieved at a low sintering temperature of 950°C with the introduction of a tiny 0.4 wt% sintering aid, yields impressive piezoelectric strain coefficient d 33 * = 690 pm/V. This substantiates the viability of employing low-cost Ag/Pd (90/10) as inner electrode, which can be co-fired with ceramic layer to fabricate MLA. This innovation enables a remarkable displacement of 1 µm at a low driving voltage of 200 V across a 9-layers piezoelectric actuator, accompanied by high-temperature stability, exhibiting <20% variation over the temperature range of 30–250°C. These results underscore a great potential for high-performance piezoelectric actuators over a broad temperature range.

Dynamic electromechanical behavior of Eu-doped PMN-PZ-PT ceramics: Stress dominance and thermal stability for actuator applications

Qinghu Guo,Ting Wang,Xiangyu Meng,Dongxu Li,Xiaoyi Gao,Zhonghua Yao,Weiping Gong,Huajun Sun,Hanxing Liu,Hua Hao,Shujun Zhang

Piezoelectric actuators are essential components in precision positioning and force generation systems, often operating under complex multiphysics conditions. In this work, soft-type 2.5%Eu-doped 0.52PMN-0.33PT-0.15PZ piezoelectric ceramics with high piezoelectric charge coefficient d 33 = 1030 pC/N and piezoelectric strain coefficient d 33 * = 1120 pm/V were prepared, the electromechanical properties were systematically investigated under varying electric fields, uniaxial mechanical prestresses and temperatures. The results reveal that the strain exhibits a variation of ≈ 50% over the applied mechanical prestress range of 0 - 50 MPa, while showing a variation of < 20% across the tested temperature range 30 - 120°C. This demonstrates that within the tested ranges, mechanical stress is the dominant external factor governing the electromechanical response. With increasing prestress, the strain initially increases—reaching a maximum of 0.150% at 20 MPa—due to stress-assisted non-180° domain switching, and then decreases under higher stress due to domain wall clamping. This behavior reflects a transition from an electric field-controlled regime (< 20 MPa) to a stress-controlled regime (> 20 MPa), where domain wall mobility is suppressed and temperature-dependent phase transition effect is mitigated. Notably, the ceramic achieved a high mechanical work density of 0.040 J/cm 3 with electromechanical conversion efficiency of 46.4% at 40 MPa, while maintaining excellent temperature stability across all prestress conditions. These findings highlight the critical role of domain switching dynamics and stress-temperature coupling in determining actuator behavior, providing valuable design insights for the development of high-performance piezoelectric actuators with improved durability, reliability, and energy efficiency under extreme operational conditions.
