Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) represent a promising clean energy technology with significant application potential. However, their implementation is constrained by the limitations of current membrane materials. Polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-co-HFP) is a material that has garnered interest in the field of electrochemical systems because of its facile moldability into various shapes and sizes of membranes, positioning it as a highly promising alternative to high-cost commercial membranes. Nevertheless, enhancing its electrochemical characterization remains a pivotal challenge to be surmounted for its broad adoption. In this study, an efficient PVDF-co-HFP membrane, augmented with PP13-TFSI ionic liquid and sulfonation (Membrane P-I&S), was successfully synthesized, and its potential as an ion exchange membrane in MFCs was evaluated. The findings indicated that chlorosulfonic acid considerably enhances the hydrophilicity and proton transport properties of PVDF-co-HFP, with the ionic liquid posited as an effective means to augment the sulfonation effect. An MFCs incorporating Membrane P-I&S demonstrated a remarkable current production capacity and power density, exceeding those of the unmodified membrane by more than two and threefold, respectively. In addition, the MFCs based on Membrane P-I&S displayed prolonged cycling stability with a notably porous architecture and enhanced biofouling resistance. This study validates the development of a high-efficiency, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly membrane fabrication approach for application in bioelectrochemical systems. This will help promote the application of MFCs in the field of wastewater treatment and resource recovery.

Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) is widely used in polyethylene oxide (PEO) based solid electrolytes preparation due to its high ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability towards lithium and excellent mechanical properties. However, agglomeration of LLZTO and the inert interfacial layer for Li + transport between LLZTO and PEO limit its application. Herein, we systematically study the effect of different contents of 1-methyl-1-propylpiperidinium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (denoted as PP13-TFSI) ionic liquid on PEO/LLZTO composite solid electrolytes (CSEs). PP13-TFSI, which provides a new pathway for Li + transport and promotes the uniform dispersion of LLZTO. By adjusting the proportion of PP13-TFSI reasonably, the agglomeration of LLZTO is weakened, the crystallinity of PEO is reduced, and the growth of lithium dendrites is also inhibited. Therefore, the CSEs with high ionic conductivity (2.03 × 10 −4 S cm −1 , 30 ℃) enhanced by PP13-TFSI. Li||Li symmetric batteries exhibit stable cycling up to 6000 h at 60 °C, and can cycle stably for up to 3000 h at 28 °C. LiFePO 4 ||Li full batteries exhibit high-capacity retention rate (≈ 90.5 %) after 500 cycles at 1 C. This work not only systematically study the effects of different contents of PP13-TFSI on CSEs, but also provide a simple composite solid electrolyte strategy.
