A novel interfacial modification strategy to improve the wear resistance of PPESK composites

Qingguang Bao,Nan Li,Bing Wang,Zhenguo Song,Bin Luo,Shan Cheng,Jingyao Feng,Mengting Li,Wenzhi Li,Yousi Chen,Xigao Jian

High-speed and heavy-duty equipment transmission or rotation systems have experienced a significant increase in demand for wear-resistant, self-lubricating resin matrix composites. However, the interfacial interaction between the fillers and the matrix is nonetheless weak due to the fact that the composites are multi-component systems. This weak interaction negatively impacts wear resistance in practical applications. In this paper, a one-step modification method of multiple fillers based on coupling agent compounding by RSM design is proposed. The resulting PPESK composites exhibit excellent thermal (T 5wt% = 517.6 °C), mechanical (Rockwell hardness = 118 HRR), and wear (ω = 0.72 × 10 −15  m 3 /Nm) properties. In addition, PPESK composite bearings were prepared, which showed lightweight advantages, exhibited outstanding tribology performance (μ = 0.079, ω = 0.52 × 10 −15  m 3 /Nm), and demonstrated excellent media resistance (Swelling degree (90 days, 25 ℃) = 0.45 %) in Jet fuel No.3. Therefore, these bearings have great application prospects in the field of aero-engine bearings.

Preparation of an environmentally friendly water-soluble sizing agent and its application in CF/PPESK composites

Jingyao Feng,Danhui Wang,Nan Li,Heming Wang,Ning Wang,Bing Wang,Shan Cheng,Qingguang Bao,Jiangang Liu,Xiaonan Shi,Mengting Li,Xigao Jian

In this study, a series of high temperature resistant water-soluble thermoplastic sizing agents were designed and synthesized to improve the interfacial bonding of CF/PPESK composites. The effects of the ratio of water-soluble functional monomer (PPL) and high temperature resistant monomer (DHPZ) on the performance of the pastes were investigated. The results showed that the sizing agent with PPL: DHPZ = 6: 4 had the best performance, and its thermal decomposition temperature was up to 348 °C, which met the requirements of the composite molding process. The ILSS and flexural strength reached the peaks of 67.2 MPa and 1526.5 MPa. The retention rates were 89.7 % and 81.8 %, respectively, after hydrothermal aging treatment, compared with 77.7 % and 79.2 % for the epoxy sizing agent. The bottleneck of traditional epoxy sizing agent and CF/PPESK composites molding process mismatch has been broken.

Modulus Interfacial Layer via Alternating "Rigid-Flexible" Structures: Enhancing Interfacial and Mechanical Properties of CF/PPESK Composites

Qingguang Bao,Jiangang Liu,Qingfeng Sun,Ning Wang,Shan Cheng,Jingyao Feng,Nan Li,Xigao Jian

Aiming at the problems of low bonding strength and large modulus difference at the interface between carbon fibers (CFs) and resin matrix, this research achieved in-situ growth of an adhesive "metal-phenolic" complex network (TA@Fe 3+ ) on CFs surfaces. Additionally, a modulus gradient transition layer featuring alternating "rigid-flexible" interlayer structures ((TA@Fe 3+ -GO) 2 ) was further constructed. The flexible TA@Fe 3+ complex network boosts chemical bonding at the fiber-resin interface, whereas the rigid GO enhances load transfer and dispersion. Through the synergistic effect of "interfacial adsorption-physical reinforcement", the interfacial strength is improved. The alternating “rigid-flexible” interfacial layer reduces the modulus mismatch between CFs and the resin by expanding the interfacial phase thickness and slowing the modulus decline rate, thereby minimizing interfacial stress concentration. Compared with UCF/PPESK composites, the modified composites exhibit a 40.4% increase in flexural strength and a 70% increase in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). This study offers novel perspectives on the design of multi-level gradient modulus interlayer structures and the fabrication of strong-interfacial carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites (CFRPs).

Thermostable PPESK/TiO2 nanocomposite ultrafiltration membrane for high temperature condensed water treatment

Shanshan Zhao,Peng Wang,Ce Wang,Xin Sun,Linhuan Zhang

Poly (phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK)/TiO 2 organic–inorganic composite ultrafiltration (UF) membranes with enhanced performance for high temperature condensed water treatment were prepared using a phase-inversion method. The effects of TiO 2 concentration on the membrane morphologies, physic-chemical properties, membrane permeability and antifouling performance were investigated and discussed. The SEM result reveals that the penetrated finger-like structure in sublayer is suppressed, and sponge-like structure begins to be developed. The mechanical strength and thermal stability of composite membrane are improved due to the existence of hydrogen bond between TiO 2 and polymer. The permeate flux is also enlarged due to the improved hydrophilicity and porosity. Compared with neat PPESK membrane, the composite membranes present improved antifouling properties, showing lower filtration resistances, MFI values and better flux recover property during high temperature condensed water treatment. The optimal addition amount of TiO 2 is 2   wt.%. The high temperature condensed water with excess oil and iron can be treated efficiently using PPESK/TiO 2 composite membrane. The turbidity of feed solution is almost removed. The oil and iron concentrations in permeate solution are 0.89   mg/L and 26.4   μg/L which meet the Quality Criterion of Water and Steam for Steam Power Equipment in China.

Recycling of high temperature steam condensed water from petroleum refinery by thermostable PPESK ultrafiltration membrane

Shanshan Zhao,Peng Wang,Ce Wang,James L. Langer,Gulizhaer Abulikemu,Xin Sun

The purification and reclaiming of synthetic and industrial high temperature condensed water containing excess oil and iron is investigated in this study using thermostable poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK) ultrafiltration membranes. The results show operation parameters such as transmembrane pressure, temperature and pH of feed solution, initial oil and iron concentration each play important roles in the permeate flux and oil/iron removal efficiencies. Membrane performance is almost recovered after washing with a combination of NaOH and ethanol. High temperature condensed water from Daqing petroleum refinery can be consecutively purified using a PPESK ultrafiltration membrane. The turbidity of the solutions is almost removed. Oil and iron concentrations in the permeate solutions are below 1   mg/L and 50   μg/L, respectively, which satisfy the Quality Criterion of Water and Steam for Steam Power Equipment in China. UF process shows a promising alternative to existing technology in the Daqing petroleum refinery in terms of cost and environmental protection as well as energy recovery. For future possible combination of UF and NF process application, both economic cost and saving are evaluated, and the breakeven time is about 11   months.

Polyo-Phenylenediamine/Graphene Oxide Multi-Scale Reinforcement Structures for Enhanced Interfacial Properties of CF/PPESK Composites

Yue Qiao,Hongjian Gu,Yu Zhang,Wenqi Zhao,Xi Chen,Enmao Zhang,Shouhai Zhang,Xigao Jian,Cheng Liu

The development of advanced carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic resin (CFRHTP) composites is heavily reliant on the quality of the interface bonding between CFs and the matrix. This article presented a novel surface modification strategy for CFs that utilized electrochemical polymerization and chemical grafting. Polyo-phenylenediamine (PoPD)/graphene oxide (GO) organic/inorganic hybrid multi-scale structures were successfully constructed on the surface of the CFs, which significantly enhanced the fiber's surface roughness, and the introduction of nitrogen-containing active groups improved fiber wettability and absorption efficiency for the PPESK matrix. The tensile strength of single CF monofilaments increased from 3.34 to 3.63 GPa. Due to the enhanced interface bonding and the formation of an interface phase with modulus transition characteristics, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), flexural strength, and tensile strength of the CF/PPESK composite reached 85.1, 1573, and 2535 MPa, respectively, representing increases of 35.7%, 55.4%, and 40.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the failure mode of the composite transitioned from interface debonding to plastic deformation and GO slippage within the resin matrix. In conclusion, this study provides a promising interface modification strategy that can significantly enhance the performance of advanced CFRHTPs.

Construction of CF@ZIF-67 Reinforcements with a Polyphenol-Based Interlayer for Enhanced Interfacial Properties of PPESK Composites

Shan Cheng,Ning Wang,Qingfeng Sun,Jingyao Feng,Qingguang Bao,Zhenghui Liu,Xigao Jian,Nan Li

This study provides a novel strategy for improving the interfacial properties of advanced thermoplastic composites. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials exhibit significant potential in enhancing the interfacial properties of composite materials due to their special structure and extremely high specific surface area. However, existing introduction methods relying on pre-acidification treatments can impair the mechanical properties of carbon fibers (CFs) and lead to issues such as uneven growth of MOFs. This paper utilizes resveratrol (RES) in reaction with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and bisphenol S (BPS) to construct a polyphenol cross-linked coating on the surface of CFs. The coating provides excellent heterogeneous nucleation sites for ZIF-67 without the need for pre-acidification, successfully enabling the loading of MOF on the fiber surface. Compared to unmodified composites, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural strength of CF@ZIF-67/ polyphthalazine ether sulfone ketone (PPESK) increased by 32.44% and 29.62%, respectively. The storage modulus reached 42 GPa, and the glass transition temperature rose to 298°C. Fracture morphology analysis further revealed that the failure mode shifted from interface debonding to resin cohesive failure, demonstrating a substantial enhancement in interfacial bonding.

Preparation of a water-based carboxylated Poly(phthalazione ether nitrile) sizing agent for interfacial reinforcement of CF/PPESK composites

Heming Wang,Shan Cheng,Jingyao Feng,Qingguang Bao,Jiangang Liu,Bing Wang,Binlin Jiang,Zaiyu Wang,Nan Li,Xigao Jian

This study focuses on synthesizing a range of hydrolysis-modified poly(phthalazione ether nitrile) polymers with different quantities of carboxyl groups (HPPEN-COOH). These polymers are intended to enhance the bonding strength between carbon fibers (CFs) and poly(phthalazine ether sulfone ketone) (PPESK). The chemical structure of HPPEN-COOH was elucidated using FTIR spectroscopy, and the presence of HPPEN-COOH as a coating on the CFs surface was confirmed by XPS analysis. Compared with the UCF/PPESK composite, the interlaminar shear strength of the CF-5/PPESK composite increased by 39 %. In the DMA test, the service temperature and storage modulus of the CF-5/PPESK composite were increased to 268 °C and 112 GPa, respectively. Furthermore, the composite showed satisfactory performance in hydrothermal aging studies. This method is simple and easy to implement, has the potential for large-scale industrial production, and is an environmentally friendly method to improve the interface properties of the CF/PPESK composite.

Grape cluster-structured CNT@ZIF-8 hybrids anchored on electrospun PPENK veils for enhanced interlaminar toughness of CF/PPESK composites

Xi Chen,Yu Zhang,Binggang Liu,Siyuan Dong,Xinbo Dong,Xigao Jian,Cheng Liu

A “grape cluster”-like multiscale hybrid structure (CNT@ZIF-8) was successfully constructed by in-situ growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles on CNT surfaces. • Molecular dynamics simulations revealed the interaction mechanism between CNT-COOH and ZIF-8 at the molecular level. • The CNT@ZIF-8 hybrids were uniformly anchored onto electrospun fibers via a combined electrospinning–electrospray process to achieve multiscale reinforcement. • G IC ,ini and G IC ,prop increased by 59% and 50% respectively, G IIC rose by 192%; and in-plane properties were significantly improved. In fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic composites, the surface inertness of carbon nanotubes (CNT) limits interfacial bonding with the polymer matrix, significantly reducing their reinforcing and toughening efficiency. To address this, we propose a surface modification strategy for high-temperature processing: in-situ growth of ZIF-8 nanoparticles on CNT surfaces to construct a “grape-like” multiscale hybrid (CNT@ZIF-8). Using combined electrospinning–electrospray, CNT@ZIF-8 is uniformly loaded onto electrospun fibers, and the resulting mats are introduced into the interlaminar region of CF/PPESK composites, achieving synergistic strength and toughness enhancement. Compared to the unmodified composite, Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (initiation and propagation) increases by 59% and 50%, respectively; Mode II toughness improves by 192%; flexural strength and interlaminar shear strength increase by 36% and 27%, respectively. The enhanced performance is attributed to two factors: (1) CNT@ZIF-8 anchoring on electrospun fibers improves fiber–matrix interfacial bonding; (2) the nanoscale rough structure of ZIF-8 on CNT enhances mechanical interlocking with the resin matrix. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal strong hydrogen bonding between CNT and the ZIF-8 precursor (2-methylimidazole). During loading, the “grape-like” hierarchical structure suppresses CNT debonding and sliding, promoting energy dissipation via enhanced interfacial friction and multi-path crack propagation, thereby greatly increasing energy absorption during fiber pull-out. This work provides a new strategy and theoretical basis for surface modification of CNT in high-temperature resistant thermoplastic matrices.

An interfacial regulation strategy for superior interlaminar toughness: Harnessing resin diffusion and CNT interlocking in core-shell fibers of CF/PPESK composites

Xi Chen,Siyuan Dong,Xinbo Dong,Huimin Zhou,Wenqi Zhao,Xigao Jian,Cheng Liu

Carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic polymer composites (CFRHPTPC) generally suffer from insufficient interlaminar toughness and susceptibility to delamination failure. This study employed coaxial electrospinning combined with an etching process to fabricate an electrospun fiber veil featuring exposed CNT structures on its surface. The electrospun fiber veils enhance the interfacial bonding strength between the electrospun fibers and the resin matrix through the synergistic effect of shell resin diffusion and mechanical interlocking of CNT. This approach effectively overcomes the low interfacial bonding strength caused by the surface inertness of high-temperature-resistant electrospun fiber, significantly enhancing the interlaminar toughness and in-plane mechanical properties of CF/PPESK composites. This study further elucidated the diffusion and bonding strength of the resins at the molecular level through molecular dynamics simulations, and quantitatively characterized the diffusion thickness via AFM-Nano IR. The results indicate that the G IC,ini and G IC,prop of the modified composite increased to 1195 J/m 2 and 1300 J/m 2 (48% and 43% increases, respectively), while the maximum G IIC reached 2265 J/m 2 (131% increase). Additionally, the flexural strength, flexural modulus, and ILSS of CF/PPESK composites reached up to 1505 MPa, 114 GPa, and 70 MPa, respectively (increases of 25%, 21%, and 13%). These performance enhancements were attributed to the multiscale synergistic reinforcement mechanism at the electrospun fiber-resin interface, achieving simultaneous optimization of toughness and strength in the composite. This study provides novel insights and methodologies for synergistic reinforcement and toughening of CFRHPTPC through interlayer design of high-performance composites.

Phthalocyanine sizing modification: An excellent strategy in establishing high-temperature-resistant and high-strength interface of CF/PPESK composites based on conjugated structure

Yuxi Pan,Enyu Quan,Yue Qiao,Manxia Zhang,Enmao Zhang,Xigao Jian,Cheng Liu

Carbon fiber-reinforced high-performance thermoplastic composites have been widely used in military science, aerospace, and new energy fields. However, the inert surface of carbon fibers leads to poor interfacial strength, necessitating surface modification. In this study, Pc was introduced onto the CF surface via a solution impregnation–coating method to enhance the interface interactions of CF/PPESK composites. The effects of Pc structure on the interfacial bonding and high-temperature performance of the composites were investigated. When CF was impregnated in a 5 mg/mL Pc solution and dried at 150 °C, its surface energy reached 36.9 mN/m, representing a 41.37% increase compared with untreated CF. Meanwhile, the CF/PPESK composites modified with 5 mg/mL Pc exhibited 18%, 67%, 14%, and 36% increases in interlaminar shear strength, interfacial shear strength, tensile strength, and flexural strength, respectively, compared with those based on desized fibers. At 150 ℃, 200 ℃, and 250 ℃, the composites retained 93%, 85%, and 75% of their flexural strength, respectively, outperforming the unmodified counterparts. These improvements are attributed to π – π conjugation between Pc, CF, and PPESK, which enhances interfacial bonding, as well as the increased surface roughness and polarity of CF after Pc modification. Moreover, the excellent thermal stability of Pc ensures the maintenance of interfacial performance at elevated temperatures. This work provides a new approach for developing high-temperature-resistant sizing agents for high-performance thermoplastic resin composites.

Cactus-Spine Inspired Aligned CNT-Electrospun Fibers for Interlaminar Toughening of CF/PPESK Composites: Guiding, Arresting, and Enabling 3D Propagation for Energy Dissipation

Xi Chen,Xinbo Dong,Siyuan Dong,Huimin Zhou,Kaiyuan Fan,Xigao Jian,Cheng Liu

Electrospinning-electrospray assembles aligned CNT on fibers, overcoming resin viscosity limits. • CNT embedded in fibers form cohesive interlocking, achieving strong mechanical interlock. • Guide–arrest–3D propagation mechanism enables multiscale crack deflection for high toughening. • G IC ,ini and G IC ,prop increased by 51% and 44% respectively, G IIC rose by 178%; flexural strength, flexural modulus, and ILSS also improved. Conventional carbon fiber reinforced high-performance thermoplastic (CFRHPTP) composites suffer from inherent dispersion deficiency and alignment challenges of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in high-viscosity matrix, leading to suboptimal interlaminar toughening efficiency. To address this critical issue, a bioinspired multiscale toughness and reinforcement paradigm for carbon fiber reinforced poly(phthalazinone ether sulfone ketone) (CF/PPESK) composite was proposed. Specifically, drawing inspiration from the geometric microstructure of cactus spines (high aspect ratio and directional growth), the vertically aligned CNT-anchored electrospun fiber veils were developed by the synergistic electrospinning-electrospraying protocol, and were strategically inserted into the interlaminar zones of CF/PPESK composites. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterizations confirmed that the electrospun fibers were firmly anchored with CNT, successfully constructing a three-dimensional reinforcement network. Furthermore, this architecture significantly enhanced the toughness of CF/PPESK composites, with the initiation and propagation values of mode I fracture toughness increased by 51 % and 44 %, respectively, while mode II fracture toughness improved remarkably by 178 %. Notably, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and interlaminar shear strength were enhanced by 25 %, 24 %, and 18 %, respectively. Microstructural analysis revealed that the excellent toughening effect originates from a three-dimensional crack deflection, guidance, and arrest mechanism formed by the synergistic interaction between electrospun fibers and aligned CNT. This micro-nano synergistic mechanism significantly promotes fracture energy dissipation and simultaneously enhances the in-plane strength of the composite. This work provides an innovative and efficient pathway to overcome the interlaminar toughness limitations in high-viscosity resin-based composites. A one-step electrospinning-electrospray assembly is developed to anchor aligned carbon nanotubes (CNT) onto electrospun fibers, overcoming resin viscosity limitations to achieve controlled nanoscale orientation within composites. This bioinspired micro-nano architecture features CNT embedded within the electrospun fibers and forming cohesive interlocking, achieving a strong mechanical interlocking effect. Introduced into the interlaminar region, this architecture triggers a "guide–arrest–three-dimensional propagation" crack deflection mechanism, significantly enhancing toughening efficiency. As a result, Mode I initiation toughness increases by 51%, Mode I propagation toughness by 44%, and Mode II interlaminar toughness by 178%, with simultaneous improvements in flexural strength (25%), modulus (24%), and ILSS (18%).
