To enhance the performance of the polyphenylene sulfone (PPSU) membrane, a novel mixed matrix membrane with hydrophilicity and antifouling properties was prepared. Using PPSU as the basic membrane material, polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) as the porogen, N -Methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) as the solvent, and MOF-CAU-1 (Al 4 (OH) 2 (OCH 3 ) 4 (H 2 N-BDC) 3 · x H 2 O) as the filler, PPSU/CAU-1 mixed matrix membrane (MMM) was prepared by an immersion precipitation and phase transformation technique. By changing the amount of MOF-CAU-1, the properties and performance of the MMM membrane were investigated in terms of hydrophilicity, pore morphology, surface roughness, and dye removal. The results show that the highest pure water flux of the mixed reached 47.9 L·m −2 ·h −1 , when the CAU-1 addition amount was 1.0 wt%, which was 23% higher than that of the pure PPSU membrane. Both the rejection rate and the antifouling performance of the MMM membrane also noticeably improved.

The wettability of the membrane surface is very important for the separation of oil-in-water emulsion. In this paper, the hydrophilic NH 2 -CAU-1 was added to the membrane surface by interfacial polymerization, which greatly improved the separation efficiency of oil-in-water emulsion. The effect of the amount of NH 2 -CAU-1 on the separation efficiency of TFN membrane was studied, and it was determined that TFN-1 membrane had ultra-high separation efficiency of oil-in-water emulsion (> 97.60%). TFN-1 membrane has a high underwater oil contact angle (higher than 139.53°), resulting in excellent oil adhesion resistance on the membrane surface. The universality and cycling performance of TFN-1 membrane were tested, and UWOCA had good stability under strong acid, strong base and different NaCl concentrations, and the separation efficiency did not change significantly after 8 cycles. The results show that TFN-1 membrane has excellent performance in separating oil-in-water emulsions and has broad application prospects in separating oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by surfactants. The fine micro-structure regulation of polymeric membranes is crucial to the separation performances. Herein, we prepared a novel Polyphenylsulfone (PPSU)/sulfonated polysulfone (SPSf) microfiltration membrane with ‘hour-glass’ like spongy micropore-structure via vapor and liquid induced phase separation (V-LIPS) technique. A precritical casting solution was prepared by adding a certain amount of H 2 O using N, N -dimethylacetamide (DMAc) as the solvent and Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone (PVP) as the pore-forming agent. The effect of residence time in vapor on membrane structures is extensively evaluated. Results revealed that the resultant membranes evolved from finger-like to bicontinuous structure with extending the exposure time (>5s) in vapor. The pure water flux of the membrane with the vapor time (30s) under the pressure of 0.2 bar reached a high value of 3045.7 ± 42.7 L/(m 2 ∙h). Moreover, the obtained membrane M3 showed excellent separation properties for surfactant-stabilized n-hexane-in-water, isooctane-in-water and decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5)-in-water emulsions with rejection coefficient up to >99%, >99% and >98% and high rejection of 99.0% to SiO 2 nanoparticles . Therefore, PPSU/SPSf membrane with controlled ‘hour-glass’ like spongy micro-pore structure showed high permeability with high rejection coefficient for both inorganic nanoparticles and oily water.

This study proposes an interface-engineered strategy for constructing robust ZIF-8/PPSU double-layer membranes, aiming to achieve high-performance hydrogen separation. A customized seed implantation technique was employed to ensure precise anchoring of ZIF-8 seeds within the micro/nano-structured surface layer of a polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) base membrane. This strategy enabled the subsequent epitaxial growth of a continuous, defect-free ZIF-8 separation layer on an alumina-supported PPSU substrate. The method effectively engineered the organic-inorganic interface, converting weak physical contacts into a tightly integrated heterostructure. The resulting ZIF-8/PPSU membranes exhibited outstanding hydrogen sieving performance, significantly surpassing that of the pure PPSU counterpart. Under optimal conditions, the membrane demonstrated a hydrogen permeability of 16,211.03 barrer, with selectivities of 7.06 for H 2 /CO 2 , 23.15 for H 2 /N 2 , and 28.91 for H 2 /CH 4 , thereby exceeding the Robeson upper bound. The enhanced interfacial adhesion can be attributed to a synergistic combination of factors. The seeded micro-topography provides a mechanical interlocking effect. Van der Waals forces and hydrogen-bond interactions are present between PPSU polar groups (sulfone/ether) and ZIF-8 nodes/linkers. Seamless epitaxial continuity is maintained during secondary growth. This work demonstrates that rational interface engineering via seed implantation is an effective route to eliminate non-selective voids and achieve superior gas separation efficiency in MOF/polymer composite membranes.
