In this study, a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic stainless mesh coated with polytetrafluoroethylene/silicon dioxide (PTFE/SiO 2 ) was fabricated through electrostatic self-assembly method followed by sintering treatment. The PTFE was utilized to construct low-surface-energy surface and the SiO 2 nanoparticles were added to enhance its surface roughness. The as-prepared stainless mesh exhibited desirable superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity with a water contact angle of 152° and oil contact angle of 0°. The coated stainless mesh could separate a variety of oil/water mixtures with high efficiency and it also exhibited good recyclability. Moreover, the corrosion-resistance of stainless mesh was greatly improved by coating it with PTFE. The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) measurements showed that the coated mesh could withstand high temperature of up to 430°C, indicating excellent thermal-resistance. It is believed that this ultra-robust stainless mesh would have significant potential applications in industry.

In order to solve the problems of poor dispersibility and wettability, as well as unsatisfactory wear resistance and load capacity of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) as water lubricating additive, a new type of PTFE@silica (PTFE@SiO 2 ) core-shell nanoparticles was prepared by encapsulating SiO 2 layer on the surface of PTFE via chemical bonding. Electron microscope analysis showed that the synthesized particles had well-defined core-shell morphology. Special double/multi-core structure and a reduced thickness of the intermediate shell were found, and the formation mechanisms were also explored in detail. The water contact angle measurement proved that the wettability of PTFE could be greatly enhanced by coating SiO 2 layer. The friction tests were performed to investigate the water lubrication properties of PTFE@SiO 2 additive, the results indicated that the core-shell PTFE@SiO 2 nanoparticles possessed the superior tribological properties, and the maximum friction coefficient and wear volume were respectively decreased by 75% and 99% when compared with pure water and water with PTFE/SiO 2 . Based on the analysis of worn surface, it was believed that the existence of core-shell structure and the formation of robust transfer film were the key to its excellent performance, and a possible lubrication mechanism was also proposed.

Composite coatings consisting of polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and 40 nm silicon dioxide (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles (PPS-PTFE/SiO 2 ) with SiO 2 in the range of 0–4 g/l were successfully prepared on AZ31 Mg alloys by a simple spray process. The morphology, composition, water contact angle (WCA), wear behavior and corrosion properties of the composite coatings were measured by using SEM, FT-IR, OCA20, sandpaper abrasion and electrochemical workstation, respectively. Effects of SiO 2 content on the wear behavior and corrosion properties of the coatings were studied. It is found that micro-sized protrusions distribute on the surface of the coatings, and a fibrous-network structure of PTFE arranges on the protrusions. WCAs of the PPS-PTFE/SiO 2 (0–4 g/l) coating are in the range of (152°–145.5°) ± 0.3° and the sliding angles (SAs) are less than 5°. The WCAs of the un-abraded and 10 m-abraded-on-sandpaper PPS-PTFE/SiO 2 (4 g/l) coating are 145.5°±0.3° and 142.5°±0.3°, respectively, implying the PPS-PTFE/SiO 2 coating is a robust superhydrophobic one with good wear resistance. Due to the superhydrophobic characteristics, the PPS-PTFE-based coatings show superior corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution to pristine AZ31 Mg alloys. Owing to the excellent superhydrophobicity, wear resistance and corrosion resistance properties, the robust PPS-PTFE/SiO 2 coating is regarded to possess great potential to be applied in automobiles and navigation industries in future.

Environmental-friendly polytetrafluoroethylene@silica (PTFE@SiO 2 ) composite particles characterized by core-shell structure were synthesized. The tests demonstrated that the synthesized particles had good dispersibility and stability in poly-α-olefin 6 (PAO6) and its corrosion resistance was better than zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate (ZDDP). The extreme pressure (EP) and tribological tests evidenced that PTFE@SiO 2 particles possessed superior EP and anti-wear (AW) properties, which could enhance the wear-resistance and load-bearing capacities of PAO6 in high efficiency, whereas the tribological performance was greatly affected by the load. Besides, EP tests for different kinds of base oils demonstrated that the addition of PTFE@SiO 2 particles could significantly improve the bearing capacity of these base oils, and the corresponding performances were also better than ZDDP. Scanning electron microscope and X-ray photoelectron spectrum characterizations proved that there was an organic-inorganic co-extruded transfer film generated on the worn surface, and a possible lubrication mechanism on this basis was also put forward.

HighlightsPTFE/SiO2–ER/FR superhydrophobic coatings for anti-icing and de-icing of insulators were designed. The micro/nanoscale hierarchical structure imparts good superhydrophobicity to PTFE/SiO2–ER/FR.PTFE/SiO2–ER/FR superhydrophobic coatings achieve good durability against UV irradiation or freeze–thaw cycling.PTFE/SiO2–ER/FR superhydrophobic coatings possess good anti-icing and de-icing performance under natural icing conditions. This work describes the preparation of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene)/SiO2(silicon dioxide)–ER (epoxy resin)/FR (fluorosilicone resin) superhydrophobic coatings using the spray method to improve the anti-icing and de-icing performance of transmission line insulators. The coatings exhibit a consistent fluorine distribution (32.86 wt%), which enhances their low surface energy, alongside SiO2nanoparticles that occupy the interstices between PTFE particles, resulting in a dense micro- and nanoscale hierarchical structure. Consequently, the coatings have good superhydrophobicity, featuring a contact angle of 173.9° and roll angle of 1.2°. Following 66 days of UV irradiation, the contact angle remains above 150°, and the roll angle is approximately 15°, accompanied by a slight increase in ice adhesion strength. Following 26 freeze–thaw cycles, the contact angle stabilizes at around 157°, showing good environmental durability. Natural icing studies validate the coatings’ good anti-icing and de-icing efficacy: in comparison to common insulators, the coated insulators demonstrate a 14.2% reduction in ice accretion weight and a 67.7% reduction in maximum ice ridge length.
