Graphical A multifunctional coating composed of PTFE, PDMS, and nano silica was successfully prepared via deposition coating and heating treatment in this study, which possessed excellent anti-corrosion, anti-scaling, anti-fouling, anti-icing, and self-cleaning properties. This superhydrophobic coating can be loaded onto various facilities and equipment as top finish, protecting the substrates from water containing contaminants. This coating may have broad applications in the field of metal substrate protection. PTFE-based superhydrophobic coatings have received increasing research and the fabricated coatings exhibited excellent anti-corrosion, anti-scaling, anti-fouling, and anti-icing properties. In order to further enhance the hydrophobicity of PTFE coating, a PTFE-based coating consisted of nano-silica and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was fabricated by deposition coating and annealing treatment. The water contact angle and sliding angle of the coating achieved 160.65° and 3.02°, respectively, demonstrating it possessed superhydrophobic property. Due to its excellent surface feature, the coating exhibited resistance to milk, coffee, and mud water, and could be easily cleaned by water flow. Besides, the water droplet on the coating had a longer freezing time and the ice droplet could be easily removed from the coating. Ascribed to the abundant nonpolar groups and the air cushion formed under water, the prepared coating had outstanding anti-scaling and anti-corrosion properties. The electrochemical impedance of the steel plate with the coating (above 9000 Ω·cm 2 ) increased by two orders of magnitude compared with the non-coating one (78.2 Ω·cm 2 ), and the anti-scaling rates of the coating towards BaSO 4 and SrSO 4 were all above 80%. It is promising that the coating will be a competitive candidate in many application fields.
The Ni-P/TiN/PTFE (poly tetra fluoroethylene) composite coatings were prepared by electroless plating method on Ti plate, which was used as bipolar plates of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The morphology, crystallographic texture, electrochemical corrosion, contact resistance, and hydrophobic property of the Ti bipolar plates with coatings were investigated. The results revealed that Ni-P/TiN/PTFE coating had a dense surface morphology, uniform distribution of composite particles. Ti with coating showed 0.48 μA cm 2 of corrosion current in the simulated solution of PEMFCs and 6 mΩ cm 2 of interfacial contact resistance (ICR). The hydrophobicity test showed that the coating interface was flat and the wetting angle was 112.4°. In conclusion, The Ni-P/TiN/PTFE composite coatings exhibit superior improvement in corrosion resistance, interface hydrophobicity, and conductivity to Ni-P, Ni-P/TiN, and Ni-P/PTFE coatings. The Ni-P/TiN/PTFE coating was suited for bipolar plate surface modification of bipolar plates.
This study employs hydrophobic modification of the current collector to optimize cathode water management and enhance the performance of passive DMFCs. The surface of the cathode current collector was hydrophobized by polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) coating and titanium dioxide/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite coating. The experimental results showed that the surface hydrophobic treatment significantly improved the cell performance at low methanol concentration and marginally improved the cell performance at high methanol concentration. Among them, the DMFC with bilayer TiO2/PDMS hydrophobic-treated cathode current collector with a contact angle of 153.2° showed the best performance, which achieved superhydrophobicity and led to a peak power density that was 27.25% higher compared to the DMFC with an untreated current collector. With the gradient-based hydrophobic treatment for the cathode current collector, the best performance was achieved when double-layer TiO2/PDMS was used on the MEA side and PTFE coating on the air side.
