In this study, a novel Janus membrane was developed by constructing Cu-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (Cu-BTC) metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hydrophilic coating on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The Cu-BTC@PVA/PVDF Janus membrane showed a rougher surface with an in-air water contact angle of 27.4˚ and an underwater oil contact angle of 152.8°. The Cu-BTC had minimal impact on mass transfer efficiency in MD process, and the Janus membrane exhibited excellent anti-oil-fouling and anti-NOM-fouling properties. The formation of the hydration layer, the slip boundary effect, and the electrostatic repulsion by the hydrophilic serrated interface were the main antifouling mechanisms. The hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction was the main fouling mechanism of PVDF membrane for both oil and NOM. Sodium alginate (SA) displayed severe fouling with a compacted fouling layer in PVDF membrane due to the concentration polarization (CP) and gel layer formation. Inorganic fouling was the predominant fouling for the high CP and inorganic–organic coupling. While humic acid (HA) surpassed SA in Cu-BTC@PVA/PVDF Janus membrane for the stronger hydrogen bond, hydrophobic-hydrophobic interaction was significantly alleviated. Inorganic fouling was also significantly alleviated due to the strong electrostatic repulsion effect. The prepared Janus membrane has great potential to promote MD dealing with hypersaline industrial wastewaters containing complex organic matters.

Membrane distillation (MD) is a promising desalination technique. However, commercial membranes usually suffer from wetting and fouling issues, which hinder their wide applications. In this study, we coat a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane with a hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a citric acid (CA) mixed layer to fabricate PVA-CA/PVDF Janus membranes. A polydopamine (PDA) layer is used to enhance the adhesion between the PVA-CA layer and the PVDF membrane. Compared with the pristine PVDF membrane, the PVA-CA/PVDF Janus membrane shows excellent anti-wetting and anti-fouling performance without sacrificing water flux, significantly enhancing the efficiency of MD processes. The anti-wetting capacity of the Janus membrane stems from the rejection of surfactants through size exclusion and high liquid entry pressure by the PVA-CA layer. Its anti-fouling property is attributed to underwater superoleophobicity of the PVA-CA layer. Furthermore, the PVA-CA/PVDF Janus membrane exhibits superior performance in desalinating natural seawater and treating artificial industrial wastewater, demonstrating its remarkable versatility. The Janus membrane developed in this work shows great potential for applications in MD and wastewater treatment. Highlights Fabrication of robust PVA-CA/PVDF Janus membranes featuring a hydrophilic PVA-CA layer and a hydrophobic PVDF layer. PVA-CA/PVDF Janus membranes show strong resistance to wetting and fouling for membrane distillation. PVA-CA/PVDF Janus membranes enable long-term and efficient treatment of seawater and artificial industrial wastewater.

Novel poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) hollow fiber composite membranes modified with nano-TiO 2 were prepared by a dip-coating method and they are suitable to be utilized in dye desalination and wastewater treatment . Glutaraldehyde (GA) was used as a cross-linker for the composite polymer membrane in order to enhance the chemical, thermal as well as mechanical stabilities. The surface morphologies and chemical structures of modified membranes were observed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and FTIR spectroscopy . Zeta potential of the membrane surface was used to analyze the membrane separation performance. Separation efficiency of dye and salts through novel PVA/PVDF composite membrane was dramatically influenced by dye concentration, salts concentration, pH and temperature of feed solution. Fouling and thermal stability of the membrane were also evaluated with CR, NaCl, and Na 2 SO 4 as model compounds. The separation datas showed that the 1 g/L nano-TiO 2 modified membrane presented highest performance in terms of the rejections to CR, MO, and MB being 94±2.57%, 52.1±2.45%, and 92±2.20%, respectively. And all the PVA composite membranes had no rejection to salts (NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 ). Compared with PVA composite membrane, the PVA composite membrane modified with nano-TiO 2 has higher separation efficiency, antifouling and thermal stability.

Preparation of composite hydrogels by in situ polymerization (SP) using choline chloride (ChCl), acrylamide (AM), and urea (U) as raw materials for deep eutectic solvent (DES), with the introduction of PVA and PVDF as fillers into DES. Characterization of the composite hydrogels was conducted using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This study analyzed the pressure sensitivity, piezoelectricity, swelling behavior, and mechanical properties of the composite hydrogels. The results indicate that due to the dipole–dipole interactions between PVA and PVDF, the composite hydrogels exhibit excellent pressure sensitivity and piezoelectric performance. When the ratio of PVA to PVDF is 1:1, the composite hydrogels exhibit optimal performance, with a 3.37-fold increase in pressure sensitivity and a 6.49-fold increase in piezoelectricity compared to other ratios. This research provides a method for preparing composite hydrogels with excellent piezoelectric performance and pressure sensitivity.

Harvesting energy from the ubiquitous environmental water vapor cycle is a promising pathway for sustainable power generation. Human skin releases ≈40–340 W of thermal energy per hour through perspiration, and even converting 1% could power most low-energy wearable devices. However, achieving stable vapor capture, directional transport, and efficient charge separation in the skin microenvironment remains a key challenge for hygrothermal energy conversion. Inspired by plant transpiration, a bioinspired moisture-guiding heterogeneous interface is constructed to fabricate a Janus Alk-MXene PVA@Alk-PVA-PVDF fibrous membrane with hydrophilic adsorption, ion conduction, and evaporation-driven traction, enabling directional vapor transport and efficient charge separation. With a thickness of 0.084 mm, the membrane combines flexibility, breathability, and excellent integration compatibility for wearable applications. A 1 cm 2 Janus MEG delivers a rapid response of 1.07 s, 1.18 V output, ≈935.2 µA cm −2 short-circuit current density, and ≈1103.5 µW cm −2 power density, retaining ≈0.87 V after one month and demonstrating excellent moisture sensitivity with stable voltage output. Furthermore, a modular three-unit series–parallel configuration achieves ≈2.32 V and ≈46.4 mA under high humidity, providing a sustainable strategy for self-powered wearable electronics in medical monitoring and next-generation human–machine interaction.
