Magnesium phosphate bone cement (MPC) is one of the most important candidates for bone implant materials due to its properties such as no need for sintering, self-curing formation, high early compressive strength and rapid degradation. However, traditional methods for creating porous structures for MPC, such as foaming or incorporating degradable materials, often result in closed pores or pores predominantly localized on the surface, severely limiting its comprehensive degradation and effective formation of new bone. In this study, porous MPC scaffolds with directional layered channels were successfully prepared using innovative directional freeze-drying and in situ hydration techniques. The key findings of the study were that the incorporation of degradable acidic PVA staple fibers not only significantly improved the mechanical properties of the porous MPC scaffolds, but also effectively addressed the issue of high alkaline cell toxicity upon degradation. When the fiber content is 3 wt%, the compressive strength of the porous scaffold increases from 4.67 to 8.83 MPa, which was attributed to both the high tensile strength displayed by PVA fibers and the presence of multiple fiber forms within the scaffold. And the acidification of PVA fibers during degradation resulting in a decrease in the pH value of the SBF from 8.93 to 7.67, which reduced the cytotoxicity of the scaffolds. Furthermore, through a 7-day microzone in situ hydration process, the porous MPC scaffold with a Mg/P molar ratio of 1.45:1 transformed into KMgPO 4 ·6H 2 O. The pH value of simulated body fluid (SBF) showed an increasing trend with the rising Mg/P molar ratio following degradation of porous MPC scaffolds. The conclusions of the study showed that the prepared porous PVA f /MPC scaffolds with oriented hierarchical channels exhibit non-cytotoxicity and provide an optimal environment for cell survival and proliferation, and demonstrated great potential applications in the field of biodegradable bone implantation materials.

Ultrafine Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers have an outstanding potential in various applications, especially in absorbing fields. In this manuscript, an electrostatic-field-assisted centrifugal spinning system was designed to improve the production efficiency of ultrafine PVA fibers from PVA aqueous solution for NH3adsorption. It was established that the fiber production efficiency using this self-designed system could be about 1000 times higher over traditional electrospinning system. The produced PVA fibers establish high morphology homogeneity. The impact of processing variables of the constructed spinning system including rotation speed, needle size, liquid feeding rate, and voltage on fiber morphology and diameter was systematically investigated by SEM studies. To acquire homogeneous ultrafine PVA fiber membranes, the orthogonal experiment was also conducted to optimize the spinning process parameters. The impact weight of different studied parameters on the spinning performance was thus provided. The experimental results showed that the morphology of micro/nano-fibers can be well controlled by adjusting the spinning process parameters. Ultrafine PVA fibers with the diameter of 2.55 μm were successfully obtained applying the parameters, including rotation speed (6500 rpm), needle size (0.51 mm), feeding rate (3000 mL h−1), and voltage (20 kV). Furthermore, the obtained ultrafine PVA fiber mat was demonstrated to be capable of selectively adsorbing NH3gas relative to CO2, thus making it promising for NH3storage and other environmental purification applications.

Red mud-based geopolymers are an efficient alternative to resolve the high cement consumption in 3D printed concrete (3DPC). From a materials perspective, good printability and mechanical properties are critical to adopting red mud-based geopolymers in 3DPC. In this study, we selected bauxite tailings-red mud and blast furnace slag to prepare geopolymers. Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers with 0, 0.3 %, 0.6 %, 0.9 %, and 1.2 % volume fractions were used to reinforce 3D printed red mud-based geopolymers. To evaluate the influence of PVA fiber on the printability and mechanical properties of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer. We tested the workability, extrudability, structural build-up ability, shape stability, and mechanical properties of the red mud-based geopolymer containing different volume fraction PVA fibers, and a microstructural analysis was performed to reveal the interface bond between the fibers and the geopolymer matrix. The results showed that adding PVA fibers impaired the workability of the red mud-based geopolymer mortar. The red mud-based geopolymer mortar showed a more than threefold increase in extrusion pressure compared to the control mixture (P0) when adding 1.2 % vol fiber. For all other mixtures, the increase was less than twice that of the control mixture. The PVA fiber had a significant positive impact on the structural build-up ability and shape stability of the 3D printable red mud-based geopolymer. In addition, PVA fibers promoted the bending strength of the hardened geopolymer specimens better than the compression strength, and the geopolymer gel on the fibers indicated the good interfacial bonding ability of the PVA fiber. This study demonstrates the feasibility of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer and the reinforcement of 3D printed red mud-based geopolymer by PVA fibers, providing a material perspective to increase the range of red mud applications in 3D printed concrete.

Air pollution has seriously affected human health and the atmospheric environment. Preparation of fiber membrane with hierarchical structure provides an advanced method for high-performance air filtration. However, indistinctive secondary structure and complicated preparation present constantly in the formation of fiber with hierarchical structure, inevitably limited in the application of air filtration. In this work, a typical granular-convex structure was created in the surface of thermal-crosslinked sodium phytate/polyvinyl alcohol (T-PANa/PVA) fiber via green preparation. Unique secondary structure endowed fiber with efficient physical interception and polar adsorption, which exhibited excellent the removal of air pollutants (removal of PM 2.5 high than 99.9% while low air resistance of 36.5 Pa). In addition, due to the exist of crosslinked network, T-PANa/PVA fiber membrane expresses water-resistant and mechanical properties . This work provides a positive strategy to fabricate hierarchical fiber membranes via green preparation for high-performance air filtration, which is expected to substitute traditional air filtration materials and adapt to the sustainable development of future.
