Plasma treatment is considered a straightforward, cost-effective, and environmental-friendly technique for surface modification of film materials. In this study, air plasma treatment was applied for performance improvement of pure PVA, cellulose nanocrystal (CNC)/PVA, and CNC/oxalic acid (OA)/PVA films. Compared with the original performance of pure PVA, the mechanical properties and water resistance of air plasma treated films were greatly improved. Among them, the CNC/OA/PVA film treated by three minutes of air plasma irradiation exhibits the most remarkable performance in mechanical properties (tensile strength: 132.7 MPa; Young’s modulus: 5379.9 MPa) and water resistance (degree of swelling: 47.5%; solubility: 6.0%). By means of various modern characterization methods, the wettability, surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and thermal stability of different films before and after air plasma treatment were further revealed. Based on the results obtained, the air plasma treatment only changed the surface chemical structure, surface roughness, and hydrophobicity, while keeping the inner structure of films intact. Keywords:air plasma;PVA film;surface modification;water resistance;crosslinking

Silver-metal organic framework (Ag@MOF) has exhibited outstanding antimicrobial activity in antimicrobial applications, and reducing the biotoxicity associated with silver has become a research priority. In this study, Ag@MOF was initially modified with sodium alginate (SA) to form SA-Ag@MOF. The results showed that SA could control the release of Ag + , reducing the release by about 8% at 24 h, and the biotoxicity was significantly reduced. Finally, SA-Ag@MOF was applied as an antimicrobial agent in citric acid-modified PVA film to develop a novel composite antimicrobial film. When added at 2 MIC , the CA3-M2 film can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus , and the inhibition rate has reached 98%. For white radish packaging applications, CA3-M2 film inhibited the growth of surface microorganisms, while ensuring moisture and tissue hardness to extend shelf-life up to 7 days. Overall, the strategy conceived here can be a theoretical basis for novel antimicrobial packaging .

In contemporary agriculture, eco-friendly mulching films present a promising alternative to conventional plastic mulching films. However, their potential is constrained by challenges related to limited biodegradation and barrier performance. Addressing these limitations, innovative lignin-carboxylated materials were employed as bio-based crosslinking agents to enhance diverse properties in the fabrication of PVA films. Alkali lignin was modified with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) to enhance its chemical reactivity. The abundance of carbonyl groups in modified lignin (Lig-DTPA) plays a significant role in establishing strong compatibility with PVA through covalent bonds. This interaction yielded remarkable enhancements, elevating both tensile strength and tensile modulus by an impressive 50.9 % and 60.1 %, respectively. The introduction of Lig-DTPA at 3 % into the PVA composite films resulted in excellent UV-blocking properties. Moreover, at 3 % ratios, the presence of lignin became visibly dispersed as clear spots across the film, indicating a relatively uniform state within the matrix. The study revealed a direct correlation: as the lignin content increased, the film exhibited heightened water solubility and enhanced biodegradability. The PVA/Lig-DTPA film displays promising potential for utilization as a mulching film material, offering anti-ultraviolet functionality and a high degradation rate. Furthermore, its versatility extends to potential applications in packaging materials, including seedling bowls, transplanting pots, and coating films for transportation purposes.

Reliable and ultrasensitive humidity detection is essential in industrial process controls, meteorology, and medical diagnostics. In this study, a high-performance relative humidity (RH) sensor driven by a plasmonic-photonic hybrid system (PPHS), which supports waveguide modes and surface plasmon polariton mode simultaneously, is proposed. Due to the distinct sensitivities of these two modes to refractive index variation and volume expansion, the dual-mode RH detection platform offers a unique tool for isolating the individual contribution of each effect and further revealing the mechanism of moisture absorption in a crosslinked PVA film. As an RH sensor, PPHS delivers a wavelength sensitivity of 1.16 nm %RH −1 (40–70 %RH) and an intensity sensitivity of 1.1 dB %RH −1 (55–90 %RH), respectively. Benefited from such an ultrahigh sensitivity, together with excellent recyclability and a quick response time of a few seconds, the PPHS shows an almost identical real-time RH curve with an even higher resolution (<0.1 %RH) compared to a commercial electrical hygrometer in the practical ambient RH monitoring. The PPHS is further demonstrated as a human breathing sensor and a skin-humidity-based noncontact switch, suggesting that the PPHS provides a great potential in medical diagnostics and optical modulation.
